The North Face Paramount Valley Convertible Women\222s Pant can never decide what it wants\227good thing it never has to. With options to zip off and roll-up, the Paramount can be a capri, shorts, or a long pant. Water-resistant UPF 30 fabric provides lightweight comfort, and with two front pockets, cargo pockets, and hook-and-loop-closure back pockets, this pant carries all you need for a day in the mountains or running around town.
Bottom Line:
Versatile zip-off pants for unpredictable weather on the trail.
These pants are amazing! They are true to size and have more room around the backend and thighs compared to some of the other TNF's designs I have tried. The 100% nylon material is thicker than some of my past NF pants I've owned, but still very light weight. I can't say if they will breathe well in the summer since I just got them and it is still cold here, but the pants have worked great for cool to cold days and are also roomy enough if you want to add a layer underneath. I can't wait to try their versatility out this spring!

Boy, I'm glad I didn't listen to the girl who said these pants were true to size. I went with a size bigger and should've returned them, but thought the more I hiked the more loose they would become. Not! I Hiked Mount Whitney and they were easy to get off and pull around my boots...I liked that however; when I went to put the legs back on the zipper, one was gone. So there I was with one leg on and one off. This was far from a fashion statement. Yes, the first time I took them off, then on. I will pursue getting a new pair....since I think there's a lifetime warranty. I brought some safety pins, so that helped as we reached the summit. I kept popping the snaps as I bent over...maybe I've gotten fatter? Im usually a solid 10 and ordered a 12..... Glad I did....probs should've gone bigger.
Took these on a 6.5 mile "test hike" on the Black Mountain Trail, in the extreme heat of the Nevada desert in August, on an uncharacterisically-humid day. I used them as shorts and the parts of my body covered by these stayed dry and relatively cool; they even fit so as to prevent chafing. I have not had a chance to try them in cold or wet conditions, but I spilled water on them and the water beaded up nicely. I ordered a size slightly larger than my usual fit, to account for an athletic physique/round derriere; these fit very well, except for being a bit large in the waist area. Having an hourglass figure and very narrow waist,I can't fault the pants for this. They are fairly flattering for a hiking pant. The only thing I found disappointing is that the zip-off pant-legs don't also have a vertical zipper for easier removal when wearing shoes/boots. Highly recommend!
The inseam of the shorts is 6". But the measurement closest to what you're describing would be the front rise. And, unfortunately, it doesn't look like The North Face lists the front rise measurement for these pants/shorts.
I love these pants. I'm actually about to order my second pair. The fit is great and the shorts (6in inseam) are a perfect length for me. I'm 5'1" 105lb and I bought a 2/short. They fit perfectly. I first wore these hiking in Zion National Park in the spring and the weather was quite variable - so these were very functional. They're also very comfortable.
I loved the concept of these pants, with options to roll up or zip off. Fabric is lightweight. Construction seems very strong. And it's hard to find pants with the cargo pockets that have this level of versatility. But I was disappointed in the fit. I am 5'9" and 130 pounds. I ordered the size 8 regular (I've always been a size 8-10) and the waist was way too big. I re-ordered the size 6 and they were too tight in the seat. Another brand I ordered actually fit me fine at a size 6. I didn't like how these pants ride so low on the hips. I have a waist and hips. A woman's pant should be better tailored to a woman's shape. Call me old-fashioned, but I just wish there were more manufacturers out there that made women's pants that actually came up to the natural waist. Would give these pants a "5" if not for the fit issues.
These pants rule. Super comfy, pretty flattering, and so versatile. I bought a 4 and they fit perfectly. For sizing comparison, in similar hiking pants, I wear a 6 in Columbia, a 6 in Marmot, a 6 in Mtn Hardware, and a 4 in Patagonia.
Bought this for my girlfriend, and she loves it. I like how you can roll up the long pant sleeves up to your knees for wading across streams and they are convertible as well for hot days.
I love these pants! I've been searching for awhile to find convertible hiking pants that are loose enough through the legs to allow for easy, comfortable movement. These pants fit perfectly. I'm 5'3", 115 lbs. and ordered a 4P, which fit loosely (could have fit in a 2P but wanted some extra room). The small drawstring on the inside is very useful and doesn't add bulk.
The first time I wore these we ended up in a torrential downpour. My pants never felt heavy or saturated in the rain, and dried off quickly once the storm was over. And the mud wiped off easily with my hand! The pants moved with me, they weren't restricting in any way. And all the pockets are handy!
I've been searching for years to find another pair of hiking pants with lots of pockets. I tried 3 different sizes of these pants (size 2, 4, 6). I'm 4'11", 115 lbs with muscular legs. Size 4 came closest to fitting but the cut just wasn't right for me. I wanted the leg pockets to put a wallet and reading glasses in. If I put anything in the pockets, the legs were uncomfortably tight and just didn't feel like they were cut right for me. I wasn't thrilled with the mid-rise but was willing to settle to get hiking pants with pockets. I'm not sure why they tack down the corners of the back pocket making the entry smaller and harder to get into to.
Take home advice: If you find any piece of clothing you LOVE (like I do the REI hiking pants I bought several years ago that they've quit making), buy several pairs before they quit making them!
I bought these for a trip to the Boundary Waters and any other hiking that I will be doing. I wanted a comfortable convertable pant. These were exactly what I was looking for.
I used the size guide and couldn't have been more happy with the fit. I am short about 5'2" so I went with the "short." For most pants this means I still have to get them hemmed. Not these! The length was great. The waist was also a great fit. I really liked that it had two snaps instead of a button at the top of the zipper.
In the BWCA they dried quicker than any other piece of clothing I had. We tracked through long muddy portages- the legs were just covered. All I had to do was zip them off to be shorts in the canoe and rinse them in the lake. They looked almost completely clean and like I said dried before we got to camp or the next portage.
I would highly recommend these pants to anyone looking for something versatile and comfortable.

I'm usually anywhere from a size 0 (american eagle) to a 3 or 5 (roxy, hurley, etc) I'm 5'1 and about 115 lbs.. what size northface pants would fit me?
I ordered this pant in a size 2 and they fit me perfectly. I usually order a size 2 in stores like Express and I thought it was a good fit, though I do own another pair of North Face Pants in a size two and find it a little too roomy. I'm 120 lbs 5'4" and found that this particular pant was accurately sized.
They do fit true to size; however, as someone already stated, they are not stretchy, and they are not super comfortable. When I squat down or lift my leg I feel restrained and far from comfortable, and in hiking I need exactly that, therefore, they got returned. The material does look like it would be durable.
These are great. They're not stretchy (hence, not great for bouldering) or breathable, but they're water-resistant and the different leg-length options have been enough to keep me comfortable so far this spring (80 degrees one weekend, 50 the next...). They feel like they're going to be durable.
Very comfortable, light. They are thick enough that there are no problems with them getting wet, but thin enough to keep you nice and cool on those hot days.
From past experience with North Face pants, I'm sure that these will stand up to the job and last forever, but they are certainly not flattering if you have curves. I am 5'4", 120 and ordered a size 2. The length and waist were fine, but the pockets that slit upward bagged out. They probably would have been fine if there was a bit of velcro to keep them closed, but the shorts/pants were not flattering at all. I'm sad because I really love my other NF convertible pants. It appears, however, that the style that fits me so well has been discontinued. Good try NF, but not for me!
I've been buying these pants for a couple years now, and while I do love them, the fit seems a bit off now. I'm normally an 8 in these (I have 3 pairs from previous years), but in this year's edition I had to go up to a 10. I'm 5'9 150#, and while the 8 waist was tight but manageable, the zippers on the thighs were unbearable. My legs have some muscle to them, so I couldn't imagine actually hiking in the smaller size. So I exchanged them for the 10 and couldn't be happier. I'm a motorcycle camper, and these are my go-to pant. VERY quick-drying, semi dirt-resistant, and not a lot of stretch. I've worn these for days in a row and unlike most pants they retain their shape. Another plus is that they roll up pretty small (and light!) - huge plus for the adventure motorcyclist! And the three in one is amazing.
These pants are absolutely great for hiking, I don't feel they are tight on my legs and allow for good air flow on hot days. The material is also pretty resistant, so it wont tear no matter how tough your hike turns out to be. I am a size 0 but ordered it in size 2 for extra room and it's a perfect fit. They don't look baggy like most hiking pants for women and dry extra fast.
Love these pants; the only pair you will need for a long weekend(or longer) of hiking. Excellent quality, three lengths and quick-dry fabric all add extra value. Reviews I read before purchasing said to order larger size, so I did, and had to return them for my true size.

The pockets and the fact that these are actually shorts (instead of capris or pedal pushers or whatever those are called - yuck!) make these worth having. The fact that they are so poorly made as far as size is ridiculous and I just cannot give a five star. I had to order a size up because the legs are really tight around zipper area.. I ordered six pairs, same size, and all fit differently. I kept two of the six but they are poor fitting everywhere but the legs.. but, they are excellent for hiking, camping. Just wish they could get the sizing down and be consistent. Regardless, I wear my baggy bottomed shorts and enjoy the fact that my calves are bare! =)
I gave these 2 stars only because of the fit, not based on the pants themselves and their quality. To give you some history, I'm 5'10" 158 pounds, and I wear a 10 Long in American Eagle jeans (the only brand I wear because they fit me perfectly), large or extra large in Nike pants depending on the type of pants (extra large is mainly only to get the extra length if a certain pair of pants aren't available in long), so after reading these reviews I took everyone's advice and ordered a size bigger, 12 Long. They were still too small. I could get them buttoned and everything, they were just tight. They were tight in the thighs, too and I by no means have big legs/hips! They definitely fit very differently from any other pants I've ever tried on. In comparison the North Face Horizon Tempest pant fits MUCH better. Based on the reviews of those pants I ordered the same size (as stated by others), but the 10 Long was too small. I'm ordering the 12 Long and having them priority shipped as my husband and I leave for New Zealand in 6 days!!!
I am very happy with these pants. The sonnet grey color is nice and the fit is good. I 5'3, 100 lbs and the size 2 fit a little big at first but after a couple washes seemed to fit better. All of the length options work well and make these pants good for wear in all types of weather conditions. I use them for hiking all the time and can't think of anything to complain of. :)
I wore these pants as my only pair for a 6 week backpacking trip in Australia. I needed a versatile pair of pants for hiking, city dwelling, exploring, hitching, etc. Although I wouldn't buy these again since the fit isn't the most comfortable (I had to buy a long, and the legs are a bit too wide in comparison to the hips)I did like them and they did stand up well to their purpose. they are a bit overdone and I would suggest trying them on somewhere before purchase.
This pant is very comfortable and great for hiking, but order a size up! I am tall and this pant works great for me. The material is fairly thin, so if you plan on using it in cold weather, you will most likely need to add another layer . Otherwise, these are stylish (as far as hiking pants go) and comfortable! I recommend!
I am 5' 11" and 142 pounds. I am very straight and lean and built more like a man--my hips are not much larger than my waist. The size 10 fit me nicely in the waist and butt (and were a good length). However, even on me, the thighs were snug. I might be able to stroll around in them, but that's not what I bought them for. For backpacking, there's just not enough room for reaching for that next dry rock on the river crossing. Will be returning.
I ordered these pants for a trip to Peru to hike the Inca Trail. They are high quality and I love the variety of styles with this pant. The shorts are the perfect length and not too long like many convertible pants out there. However, I had to return for a bigger size because it was too tight in the waist and hips. I am 6' and always wear a size 8 so I was suprised to have to go up one. The length is ok, I would prefer the long to be just a little bit longer but they are ok as is. Overall, I think they are great, just be careful on the sizing.
After reading the reviews I was "stoked" to get these for an upcoming adventure trip, but sadly they ran VERY small compared t0 a pair of similar Columbia pants I own. The Columbia's actually need to be taken in at the waist, but I can't even zip these!

I loved these pants-lots of good pockets, good color and good fabric. Also the color coded pant zips are a good idea. I ordered these because they were supposed to have a short rise. I am short-waisted so this is important to me. These pants hit me too high in the waist, but they are better than any others I have tried, so I will keep this one pair until I find something better.
I give these pants a 4 stars because I bought these in the winter and intend to use them in the summer. I like useful products that have many uses and these pants will be great for hiking and backpacking in the summer. Although I have not used them yet I can say the material is quick dry and there are tons of pockets. I am 5'4" and I found the length to be good in the regular length. Also I am curvy and found them to fit well maybe a little tight in the thighs but not unbearable.
Although these pants appear to be a pretty decent pair, I struggled with the fit. I'm about 5"2, 120 lbs and wear 4-6. These were too snug (6 short) and not stretchy at all. Not a lot of give and a much better fit for girls who have less curves than I do.
I'm a size 12 with big hips and a small waist. They were gapping a lot in the back so I returned them. Seemed nice enough other than not fitting me properly.
I have tried so many brands and these fit me, yeah!!I am larger and older than many of your customer base, so, happy to saythese fit the hard to fit people like me.....think pear (:thank you, M, St. Louis
I really liked these pants though they did come defective - the pant leg was sewn on where they should have detached as shorts. I really like the grey color and the durable yet light weight fabric. They fit me nicely and the versatility is key, so I'm reordering and crossing my fingers that the next ones will be perfect.
The way these pants are "cut" in the hips and thighs is not at all proportional. I had to return them because the sizing does not line up. My size hasn't changed - these pants are just different.
These pants looked nice a sturdy when I took them out of the package, but when I tried them on, I knew I had to return them. Usually a size 8 is pretty loose and comfortable on me, but this size 8 was tight and wouldn't go over my hips. These pants would probably be nice for someone with slimmer thighs - they also were not light weight, but I thought they may be good for fall or cooler weather. Being water resistant appealed to me as well. I had to return because they just didn't fit right.
These fit great at first, a little high up on the waist. Ordered a size up for looser comfort, should have ordered another size up from that because they really shrink. other than that they are great.
I really liked the fact that these pants can be made into capris AND shorts. I'm really short waisted and I bought these because they look like they are lower rise than most other pants... but they weren't for me. They felt pretty sturdy, a little thicker than summer hiking pants, but they just didn't fit me right.
