Really- convertible pants are damn great for hiking/backpacking. Hitting the trail hard- zip off. Arrive at camp- zip on. Hanging around the rocky shore or beach- zip off. Leave and grab din din with friends at a nice place- zip on.

The thing is that for some reason I've found most convertible pants to be awkward in size. Usually too baggy and sloppy. Darn silly lookin'. I have a pair of White Sierra- eh- baggy as heck man. They hold up alright but just stupid lookin' I'll wear those when I know I'll be trompin' through some serious burr patches- cause if they get shredded to poop- fine- screw 'em. I have a pair of Cabela's that I've had for 4 years. Great stuff- perfect fit and they have taken some serious lickins' Too khaki for me- so I'll wear those for serious Hiking/ backpacking. Cargo ockets a lil uncomfortable when stowing goods though. I'm not into the wilderness chic crap that North Face has- when I see everybody and their brother's momma wear North Face I just laugh. Should be the national uniform for the movie "Idiocracy"- seriously- sit somewhere and count how many stupid North Face garmets you see- Jeeezuz people.
I got some serious North Face expedition gear- good stuff- BUT I Will REFUSE to wear that Chic Wilderness crap!! I'll look like the rest of the dull individuals. But shoot man- these pants ROCK! I wear them ALL the TIME. BOMBPROOF, comfortable (although weird sizes- be careful try on if you can- I am a 31' waist 32" length 185 lb dude at a height of 5'11 and the small regular is the greatest fit ever) cargo pockets comfy too when stuffed. Thank god the logo is subdued as opposed to all their other stuff where the logo screams for attention. Hell- I don't even mind if peeps notice because it is serious gear. Get some. The DWR works great, dries fasssst and breaths beautifully. Zips are sound and color coded. Built in belt is the best (not perfect) I've seen on convertible britches. Great for travel. Really- get a pair- actually- don't 'cause I want to be the only cool cat sportin' this The North Face garb.

I take offense to these comments! There are many reasons to wear these products other than hiking & exploring. For instance my husband has MS & he wears them because they are comfortable, breathable & quick to dry out on those long hot southern days while working on his farm. He has never hiked a mountain in his life, his choice of attire has absolutely nothing to do with a brand name or a fashion statement, it's out of necessity to help cope with a disease & it's effects on his daily life, this particular brand works best for him! By the way he also wears baseball caps even though he does not play baseball! Talk about "Idiocracy" & single minded, you wrote the book on it!

HAHA! Great review! I actually did a report for a sociology class on how outdoor gear was becoming high fashion. It is ridiculous to sit on a college campus and see how many people have on outdoor brands that never camp/hike/paddle/climb/etc... well you get the picture. The stuff does look good, but the stuff is meant to be used! So get out there and explore if your gonna buy the gear!

Where's the original Paramount convertibles?

By:
July 30, 2010

OK, after a good deal of disappointment with the 'new' Paramount pants last year, I decided to give the 'newest' Paramount Peak pants a try.

1) The fabric is not the same - seems less rugged - more stylish than functional. Could be better, but I can't tell.

2) The colored zippers are still there - that's a plus!

3) The right-side leg pockets are gone. Used to use them for my Swiss Army knife and reading glasses...

4) The hand pockets are sewn in such a way as you feel like you're having to hold your arms at half-cock when you put your hands in your pockets. Very odd and uncomfortable. Un-natural at best.

5) The rear pockets have one Velcro tab on the center side of the flap rather than the usual two tabs on both sides. An obvious cost saving design.

6) The fit is substantially better than the Paramount "2" pants, but not as good as the original ones.

7) SUMMARY: Another 'new and improved' design that fails to match the original design that was simple, rugged, comfortable, and likely designed by a hiker - not an accountant.

The North Face Paramount Peak Convertible Pant

By:
October 29, 2010

Have had these for seven years as my primary hiking pants. Replaced them this past winter with the Mammut Courmayeur Advanced Pants, and sadly my Paramount Peak pants won't be seeing much more trail action. My Paramount Peak shorts(pant legs zipped off) are however my staple summer hiking shorts. Durable material, zipper pocket to keep certain items always safe, deep pockets for other items to remain where you put them. When I reach my destination and activity decreases, I also have the option to add the legs for warmth. While car camping these are my comfort/utility pants. Just a great amount of versatility and durability. I am 6'1", 180lbs with a 33-36 waist depending on the brand. Large fits me.
I'm not the biggest fan of TNF, and thankfully their logo is the same color as the fabric(small one on the back pocket as well).

If these are still cut like my Paramounts from 5 years ago, the small reg or small short will do you just right. The short has a 30 inch inseam, the regular has a 32 inch inseam.

I never owned a pair of the old paramount peak convertible pants so I can't speak to changes that were made, but I love the 2010 version. The fit is great. I'm 5'10" 185 lbs and the medium regular fits me perfectly. I like the placement of the pockets and have found the pants to be durable. I'd highly recommend them.

North Face Paramount Peak Convertible Pant

By:
September 23, 2010

This are the best zippered pants I have ever owned. Took these on a mission trip to Costa Rica. Wore them 6 of the 8 days there. Drug them thru rain, mud, and hiked for miles in then to a cascading waterfall, where I unzipped them and went right in. Great water proofing on the outside. Great pockets. I loved the little zipper pocket to keep mt cash in, and the leg pocket to keep my passport in. That pocket even kept my passport dry during heavy rain. I am planing to get other colors for the future. Love them!

I finally found the pair for me

By:
August 3, 2011

I really like the concept for convertible pants, and having owned a couple pairs I've always found the ones that rub the zippers on my knees when I have the bottoms off. This is not the case is these pants, I'm taller 6'2" but have shorter legs and most L/XL would just rub against my knees or the sides (where ever the zipper head was) These fit me so they are just above my knee and allows no rubbing when I'm hiking.
Not only that they are very nice to wear on hot days and the material is light but strong as well. The zipper heads are on the legs and are color coded for each leg! genius! the extra zippered pocket is awesome, and the belt that comes with just sum up these BA pants

Not the 'good ol' Paramount' anymore

By:
April 14, 2010

TNF marketing group has trumped the design group on this one. The original Paramounts (pre-Fall '09) were the best! They fit well, were tough, breathable, windproof, comfortable and my favorite for Sierra hiking.

The Fall 2009 Paramount had an odd front and rear rise making the pants fit oddly and too long... grung look? The 'short' leg length were too long and because of the odd rise measurements, the zipper rubbed my knee caps raw. Threw them away.

The 'new' Paramount sounds like more of the Fall '09 cut, but maybe worse.

I miss the old Paramounts. They were really great and I shoudl have bought more while I could. Bad move TNF!

Works for me!

By:
March 6, 2011

I recently took these pants on a trip to Hawai'i where we trekked from sea level to the top of Haleakala; close to 10,000 ft. high. I wanted pants that would be comfortable and wear resistant in a variety of terrain and weather. These fit the bill perfectly. They weren't too hot in the sun and as we got up into the clouds, they kept the wind and chill out. The fabric seemed to shrug off the branches and rocks and always looked substantial. I loved the zippered security pocket where I kept my vauables and the built-in belt which kept everything in place. These pants seem very well made. I thought that I might forget which zip-off leg went where when I converted to shorts but then I noticed that the zippers are color-coded...somebody was thinking when they designed these!

In the women's pants, the Paramount Peak is a looser fit

In the women's pants, the Paramount Peak is a looser fit than the Paramount Valley. Is the same thing true for the men's pants? I'm looking for a looser fit for my husband. He has large, muscular thighs, and most pants are too tight around the thigh for him. Are there any guys out there with large thighs who can speak to the fit of this pant?

By:

They do have baggy thighs. That's one of the reason I like them as they don't rub my legs and irritate the hair folicles. My thighs are rather large for my size and I despise tight fitting pants. I'd suggest giving them a try and if he doesn't like em, just send them back.

strange sizing but great fit.

By:
September 8, 2010

i'm 5'8", 152 lbs, 31 waist. usually a 31-32"length. i got the med/regular and they were really baggy, had a lot of room in the waist and very baggy at the bottom. ended up getting a small/short and small/regular for comparison, and ultimately the small/short was a good fit between being loose but not baggy, with plenty of room to move. shorts look better than any other convertible i've tried. and the length of the short was better with hiking boots without bunching up too much or dragging in the back. useful pockets, good pant for the price. thanks to backcountry for their awesome return policy which let me figure out the perfect size without worrying.

I am 5' 9" 155lbs and usually wear a 31x30 pant. I chose the Small/Regular and they fit great. I guess they are on the longer side, but they are not too long to cause a problem. I also like that when you convert these into shorts, they are not awkwardly short. They are easily the best fitting pants I have ever owned. I have to admit I purchased these at Eastern Mountain Sports since pant fit is harder to determine then shirt/jacket fit.

Fantastic pants! Great for hiking and traveling in both warm & cold weather.
I've been using them in all my most recent trips to several and different environments: tropical forest, moor, and cloud forest, among others in my home country: Colombia. Love the big pockets and the materials: good quality, durable, breathable, convertible. I got two of them (Beige & Grey). I highly recommend them.

Sweet Pants

By:
August 6, 2012

Just took these on a 8 day trip in the Boundary Water Canoe Area in northern MN. These things rocked. I used these all day, every day. Only complaint, if you can call it that, was that the DWR started to fail after it was completely covered in soot/dirt/crap. I'm washing them right now and hopefully the water repellent will come back. Lightweight, convertible (zippers didn't bother knees at all), durable, dry quickly.

I'm 5'8" 140 and ordered a small/reg. Waist was a good fit but the inseam was long. Had my mom (skilled sewer) tailor them up to fit. Probably should have ordered a small/short.

Breathable and quality construction

By:
August 5, 2012

These pants feel very comfortable in hot, humid weather. Materials and construction seem high quality. Copious pockets come in handy for stashing small tools, wallet, snacks, etc.

My only gripe is the fit. Im 5'6" (30" inseam), and ordered size small. The pants' inseam is ridiculously long, unless I hike the waistband up to my ribcage. As a fix, I have roll the cuffs up to avoid tripping over them. Fortunately, the pants convert to shorts.

Lastly, the belt is "meh," and kinda pointless given the pants' elasticized waistband. Just remove it for use as a tie-down.

Great versatile pair of pants!

By:
July 3, 2012

I started buying the paramount in 2006 after my husband was diagnosed with MS. He is a farmer & need clothing that was breathable & quick to dry out after a long day of sweating in the southern summer heat. Six years later he is still wearing them & it's the only ones he wears! They wash up fabulous too! I must admit though I have a rather large laundry room with a line for hangup clothes so I never put them in the dryer. He still has & wears the 1st pair I ever bought. To the reviewer who mocked those who wear these pants but never actually hike or explore the outdoors I say to you, you should not judge a person because of that there are many reasons to wear these pants other than hiking. Its like saying you can't wear a ski jacket unless you are skiing or a baseball cap unless you play baseball. My husband started wearing these because of his disease and they have been a monumental help to him. I have to agree with some of the other reviewers about the new style though, MY HUSBAND WANTS THE OLD STYLE BACK!!!!!

By:
June 14, 2012

These pants feel great and appear to be durable hiking pants. However, after just a few miles of hiking the fabric began to wear thin on the back hip. This was most likely due to my pack rubbing against the fabric. However, for the price paid, I felt like this was unacceptable. I will be returning them and will continue my search for a more durable pair of hiking pants

Bought two pair of these last fall. Just returned from two weeks on the AT and, these pants failed.... miserably! The left leg zipper became unstitched, the stitching on the seat pockets failed, the crotch stitching failed, and despite washing pants and legs together there is significant discoloration between the two. Hiked them out to send back so they did work well as a pillow! The other pair lasted about about ten washings before falling apart....so I guess no more TNF (Totally Not Functional) for me.

Great but just missed the mark

By:
May 14, 2012

Everything you read tells the story but it missed one major point. Everytime I bend down and stand back up or take a high step, the pants ride up and give me a weggie. I had to return them. No way I can hike in these if i have to constantly pick them out of my butt. The seam in the rear just seems sewn too inward or something. I do prefer really loose clothes, but I know this too much and that no one wants to look like this with their pants riding up all the time. I am 6'6" and maybe thats the reason. I got the Lg Long and the fit was great in every way but that one. Also they were just a little too thick and therefore too hot to wear in the summer heat and humidity which is when I need them the most.

I finally found pants for the humid summer months and great for all weather but my main need is pants for summer humid hiking. I got REI Sahara Convertible Pants with No-Sit Zips - Men's 36" Inseam. Like I said in the review, I returned the Paramount pants because they were too thick for the humidity and too snug on my bottom where it got uncomfortable every time I had to pick up something off the ground. These REI pants have great features, perfect thickness, a belt I wanted to come with it, convertible bottoms tha zip off without having to remove any size shoe, and more. If I had to have a CON to the REI then it would be that they are a bit too baggy in the leg but thats it. There you have it. Also, I tried the Columbia Silver Ridge pants and they didnt fit well at all, in too many ways to get into. Hope this was helpful.

Sweet pants indeed!

Versatile! I wear these things climbing (at least) twice a week. I pull the lower leg pieces off to jog for my warm up and then put em back on to climb. Love that...

The mobility on these is fantastic too! I do not feel impeded what so ever when I am climbing. I get full range of motion when I am working a tough route or problem. Being distracted in anyway by your gear is a bad thing when you are working up a rock face.

I have also hiked a couple hundred miles in these (I bought 2 pair). They both still look brand new! I bushwack on the regular and these things hold up well to thorns, rocks and resting my keister on abrasive surfaces.

The gripes I read seem to be related to older incarnations of these pants. Whatever they were in the past, these things are legit now!

Better Today!

By:
April 8, 2012

I am very pleased with this edition of the Paramount pant. Compared with the build from six or seven years ago, the addition of the elastic waist and the excellent built-in belt, today's Paramount surpasses the past versions.

The belt buckle is not prone to undesired opening when bumped or squeezed by a pack's waistbelt. The snap closure is a lot easier to work with than the past large, single button.

The material seems about the same, perhaps a touch heavier, and the DWR is definitely better.

All around, I like the new version, and am buying another pair. I also appreciate that North Face offers a range of inseam lengths, particularly since I take a shorter length.

These pants are the only North Face goods I buy, because I haven't seen anything comparable. I very much like the Exofficio Nio Amphi series for lighter, warm weather use, but the Paramounts definitely belong in the mountains.

Why don't I buy any other North Face goods? Much like Black Diamond, they are so restrictive to their dealers regarding sales, that I have shifted almost completely away from North Face, and totally away from Black Diamond. I like most of the goods from both firms, but they offer very reduced value due to price. I have taken up with Marmot, Exofficio, Metolius, Mammut, Petzl to meet my clothing and climbing gear needs, and I shop hard to find the clearances, end-of-season, overstock, etc., to gain value.

Worth the High Price

By:
April 2, 2012

I love these pants! This is the 4th pair I recently purchased. They are rugged, quick drying, and light, as well as versatile. Not only do I wear these pants for backpacking and hiking but they make excellent casual wear for everyday.
I bought my first pair about six yrs ago and there have been several subtle changes I have noticed. They did away with the little utility pockets on the right side but made the extra zippered pocket bigger. I miss those little utility pockets which were great for pens and flashlights etc... Another change is the pockets are not as deep as previous versions. The older pants pockets extended all the way to the leg zipoffs, the newer ones only go down about 2/3 of the way. The good thing is that now the pockets are loose inside the pants which helps prevent change from falling out when you are sitting.
These pants are expensive but when I consider how long they have lasted and under what conditions, the $40 pants don't seem like such a great deal. I have had no major or catastrophic failures with these pants.
The picture I included is moi in front of Boucher's mine at the Boucher campsite in the Grand Canyon wearing the Paramount pants.

The picture I included is moi in front of Boucher's mine at the Boucher campsite in the Grand Canyon wearing the Paramount pants.

Forgive me, father, for I have sinned.

By:

I'm going to make an admission - I feel dirty for reviewing a North Face product. I had a few of their items years ago, including a little 15 liter backpack that I took all over China. God, I beat that thing to death, it was great.

Well, I found these pants on sale one day... and I was looking for some zip off pants. I had just gotten a job as a sailor in Martha's Vineyard, and I was going to have limited access to a washer and dryer, and needed something that would hold up. The fabric felt very durable, and the sizing options were great. I'm 6'2", 165, and much like the reviewer before me, I have no ass as well. Finding mediums in a long length was supercool. So, I shrugged of the sense of humiliation in buying into a brand that has become synonymous with 'Soccer Mom'...

...and I wore them, and wore them, and wore them, and wore them. The ass of these pants had been a very bad person in a previously life, as I frequently found myself dragging it against the abrasive deck of the boat. However, no wear ever appeared. At the end of the season they looked absolutely brand new... though they did not smell it.

So, now I'm a guide in Yosemite. I have purchased a second pair... but I still have that original pair. That pair, now... after life on the boat, and a season that put over 60 days of backpacking on them... they have finally shown some wear. The rear pockets are coming off because the stitching finally succumbed to the granite, the hiking, and the high-altitude flatulence. There is a tiny, and I mean TINY, pinhole in one of the asscheeks, but I plan on using them this coming season... if for no other reason that abusing a North Face product is immensely gratifying. I always smile as I prance my way off trail through the manzanita, and the legs of these pants cry out in anguish and suffering.

The Best

March 25, 2012

Personally I am not a huge fan of some North Face gear, but this is one piece of TNF gear that you cannot leave behind. I currently have three pairs, love them!! The pants fit me perfectly so they don't drag in the mud over hiking shoes I wear a 36x32 and the Large/Reg fits perfect. Personally the best part about these is the length of the shorts, they rest above the knee so when you are hiking and large steps are required the shorts don't rub your kneecaps until they are raw. And for the detailed oriented person the zippers are color coated so you can quickly figure out which pant leg attaches to which side.

5 Star Convertible

By:
March 1, 2012

Love these pants ... for a few simple reasons ... 1) The Fit. I'm 6'2" 187 pounds, 33 waist with no ass. The North Face offers short, medium and long lengths. This means I can get a medium in a long length .. No flood pants!! Bottom line ... regardless of your shape, you can find a pair that will fit. 2) Quality is as good or better than the rest. Zippers Good ... Fabric Good ... Design Good, with plenty of pockets in all the right places. 3) They offer plenty of colors and 4) Price is right. I'm an admitted gear nerd but it all gets used and abused. When it comes to convertible pants ... after trying them all ... I'm a North Face fan.

Classic Cutoff

By:

While I'll always like the older style of this pant more, the paramount is a great climbing and hiking pant. The durable material with DWR sheds water incredibly well for at least of year of constant use. The paramount is also very light and drys extremely fast. I'm 6'5 and the long option is just long enough for wear with hiking boots and the optimal length to climb with climbing shoes on.

Simple yet very nice. I like the fact that the shorts are a little shorter so when you are hiking and have to make big steps you can do so without material dragging over your knee every time. Love convertibles, can start off in the early morning hour wearing the pants, as the day heats up just switch to the shorts. Material dry's fairly quickly, overall great product.

These are Great Pants

By:
December 15, 2011

I own 4 pairs of these pants. They look good, they're durable, comfortable, versatile, water repellent and the construction is top notch. The belt is integrated into the pants and functions as expected with no slippage. The pants have a DWR finish which works great on hikes where one might encounter dew and other light precipitation. I have been on hikes during brief thunderstorms and the pants have done well. Eventually, the DWR can only repel so much and they eventually wet through, but, they dry quickly. The lower legs of the pants have zippers which means you don't have to remove your boots when the pants are converted into shorts. I have used these pants hiking and backpacking in canyonlands to mountain peaks in temperatures from the 20's to the 90's. The fit of the pants is roomy in the seat and legs. Pockets: there are cargo pockets on the thigh which are secured by velcro and next to the right hip pocket is a deep zippered pocket which comes in handy for storing things you don't want to lose, like car keys. These are good pants for the money.

I wear a 33 X 34 and the medium longs fit me well. They are just a little bit long so the longs will be your best bet. If you're on the larger side of 34 waist. If you're between a 33 and 34 get the medium.

If you mean inseam is 37, there's nothing on backcountry that will fit you well. I wear a 36, and can never buy pants here (unfortunately). Small is 28-30, so in the waist you'd probably need a medium. Theres a button for size chart under the "select options" menu.

I've worn these: backpacking, biking, town, long trips, skydiving ect.. They hold up very well. I wear them ALMOST every day(I'm wearing them now!). They do pill slightly between the legs. You can actually fit a FULL SIZE NALGENE bottle in the front hip pockets! I took them skydiving and we seat landed in a gravel pit. The gravel did scar the fabric a little, but didn't tear it. I just looks like shiny marks on the rear end! LOL

great camping pants

By:
November 6, 2011

these are a very light wt. pant that dry very fast when wet and hold up through the brush while exploring. i would buy these pants if you are looking for breathable camping pants that are great for hiking, fishing or just cruising around town. i have several pairs in a variety of colors. great for treks where it may be getting a little to warm and instead of packing shorts to change into just zip the legs off and you have a awesome pair of camping shorts. there is a ton of stow and go in these pants with the large deep pockets. i have problems carrying my fly fishing box in most pants but these pockets are great for bulky items. i don't even have a fishing pack anymore just stuff my pockets and i am ready to fish. these are solid quality pants A+++

Killer Pants

By:
October 5, 2011

I'm always very hesitant to purchase clothes online, mostly because of my weird body proportions, haha. I'm about a 34x30, and the large/short size fits me PERFECT. On top of that, they are extremely comfortable and forgiving in the waist (stretchy band) if I gain a couple pounds over the holidays. I would have to disagree that the fabric isn't functional. I didn't own a pair of the originals, but I hardly want a stiff pair of pants when I'm hiking on a trail. Now I'm not one to slide around on rocks or run through a thorny patch of bushes (that's what my grouse hunting pants are for), but these breathe and allow for more unrestricted movement. I'm definitely going to buy at least one more pair.

These pants are nice and useful. but it is not windproof. I was in the Chilean Patagonia and there is very windy and temperatures of 1 to 5 degrees celcius. if you are hiking on the move you will not have problems with this comfortable lightweight pants and his pockets are useful. But when you're at base camp are not very useful. lose heat very easily and are not windproof.

Heavily built and great material. Need better snap

By:
September 29, 2011

I bought a pair of these and really love them. The pockets are well placed and I like the right side zipper pocket for important items. The zippers are color coded so you can't mistake the left/right. The material is heavy and very wear resistant. I think these will last for some time.

The negative would be; the snap at the waist comes unsnapped when under the slightest of pressure like bending over to tie shoes etc. I re-snap often when wearing these.

These are a great pair of covertible pants. The length is right and the fit. The belt locks in tight with no slippage. The lower leg zips are great when you want to make them into shorts and you don't have to remove your shoes to do it. Same with putting the legs back on. No removing the shoes. The zippers are color matched also so you know which side to put each pant leg on.

I recently got a pair of these in Asphalt grey. They fit great and are super comfortable. I did not notice any issues with these pants and the zipper burn on the knees at all. I really do not like incorporated belts, but these are not bad. The belt connector is a plastic, with a rubber coating that makes it super easy to grip and release.

I am 6 ft tall in my hikers and the length of the medium is perfect. My waist is in around 34 to be comfortable

Love em

By:
July 18, 2011

I got these pants for a volunteer trip and I love em. First off they look great and can easily be used for casual wear. That material is a little more durable and wrinkle-free than your typical pant of this sort but still breathable. They are quite functional and fit well. I'm about 5'6" and wear the small short but could easily wear the medium short as well. Another great thing about this pair is that they look great as shorts when you remove the legs and not just like your typical zip-offs that clearly look like zip-off pants when you remove the legs. I plan to buy a replacement set of these because I'm using my current one daily to the point of breakdown and I even will get another pair in the green color too. That's how much I love em.

I love these pants so much bought another pair.
Thumbs up:
Pants are rugged, shed water and have pretty good pockets.
Pockets are vented.
They fit pretty well, but not perfect. (5'10, 175 - medium/regular) But then again, they broke the mold when I was made...
The built in belt is def thumbs up.
Thumbs down:
I wish there was two zippered pockets instead of just one.
The shorts could be a tad longer. They end above the knees which would be helpful if i were trying to join the yacht club.

Style chance for the worse

By:
June 2, 2011

I've been wearing the Paramount Peak pants for quite a number of years. Pretty much what I wear most of the time. They changed the style last fall and removed the right side pockets which were great for GPS and cell. They also removed the D ring on the side which came in very handy.

This new style is something I would expect from LL Bean and Eddie Bauer. More dressy than functional for hiking, etc. North Face don't go there!!

Not knowing of the style change I was disapointed and sent them back.

I do hope North Face takes a closer look at what theyv'e done and brings back the "classic" Paramount Peak Convertible Pant.

May 16, 2011

The North Face Paramount Peak pants are awesome! I wore them the other day for a day hike up Ingalls creek in the rain. These pants kept me dry and warm! The trail was overgrown and with moisture on the brush, there was times where the pants would get damp. I was stoked to notice that I still stayed warm, and that they dried very quickly!

The construction quality of these pants is awesome! The stitching is very good, the material stood up to brush and occasional thorns, with no signs of wear at all!

I’m going to be buying another pair soon, and would encourage anyone else looking for some quality convertible pants to get a pair of these!

The best

By:
May 16, 2011

These have always been more durable and wearable than almost all other convertable pants. Now they have corrected the only problem with them. Previously the front and side pockets were aligned on top of each other, causing a big "lump" of stuff when both pockets were used. They now have offset the pockets to correct that. Also, the material now seems better at keeping its shape. Order the darker colors for longer wear without washing.

Best Customer Service on the Web.

By:
April 18, 2011

Ordered 2 pair, size Large/Long. When received, I ripped the tags off both and put them in the closet. I wore the khaki several times, but didnt wear the grey ones for quite a few months .

Finally grabbed the grey ones, put them on, and went uh oh. They didn't fit. I checked the size tag, Large/long. IMO, they were a Medium/long with a Large/long tag. I have other Paramount Peaks and the Large/longs fit me perfect.

I told myself, there's no way Backcountry will take these back months later with no tags and buy my story of these being incorrectly marked.

Not only did Backcountry take them back, they emailed me a UPS Return Authorization label, therefore, paying the return shipping, and sent me out a new pair with free shipping. I received my correctly sized pants before Backcountry received my incorrect sized pants.

Now that's customer service. Thank you Backcountry.

BTW, I love the Paramount Peaks! Well designed and so much lighter and more versatile than jeans.

I am familiar with and like most of the North Face products but my major fault with these pants is the waist. The belt that comes with it is ok, but it get twisted in the small belt slides that are sewn in, making it uncomfortable(and you can not see where or how it is twisted), No problem...take it out and throw it away and just use the regular belt loops that are made for biger utility belts EXEPT the front left belt loop is missing. I thought that it was a factory mess up but I ordered 2 pairs, tan and OD, neither had one. Come on guys, fix this...............Material is great, quality is great, fit is great. I'm 6'4", 155 lbs. Based on previous reviews I purchased the Small/Long. They were too tight in the waist, too slim in the leg, and generally uncomfortable (length was fine). Exhanged for the Medium/Long. Much better fit with about 3/4" to 1" room in waist and more comfortable fit overall. If you're in my height/weight range, stay away from the small waist, unless you like wearing your pants above your belly button.

These pants are great. They vent very well and don't get too hot even when you are directly in the sun for hours on end. They do run a little large in the sizing. The only drawbacks are that they are a little more baggy than I would prefer, and the shorts could be a little longer. I wear a tall size, and that helps with the who wears short shorts situation. Good pants

Have 2 different colors. I like the fit. I usually take a 32" inseam but with these I need the 30" Rugged, stands up very well. Nice to have the shorts when needed. Would recommend for all around outdoor use.

Not great for thin folks

I ordered a pair of these to try on after reading a review that said they were a good fit on this guys like me. I'm 6'1", 160, and I usually wear a 30-31" waist, with 32-34" inseam. I like my pants to fit me well and not be the least bit baggy, I find that the extra fabric gets in the way and often leads to chafing on long hikes. Even among the top brands, it's difficult for me to find pants that have the right kind of athletic, low-profile fit, and these pants, like most of the others, do not fit the bill. I tried about 12 different styles from 5 or 6 manufacturers, and ended settling on the Arc'Teryx Palisade series (30x32 and 32x34), which fit like a charm and are a pleasure to wear. These NF pants were way too baggy, even the S/Longs fit like relaxed fit Levi's, which is just not what I want to be hiking in! If you don't mind baggy pants though, then these might be a good deal for you. The fabric is of ok quality, it's a little heavier than some of the higher-end series, but these pants are half the price of some of the high-end stuff so maybe that's worth it to you.

Durable and Comfortable

It's usually hard for a tall, skinny guy like myself to find a good pair of versitile hiking pants, but these Paramount Peak pants by TNF are just what the doctor ordered. 6'1" and only 140, I thought I'd have to order the small & long for it to fit. I got a medium reg instead, and lo-and-behold: they fit perfectly (with a little tightening of the elastic belt). I used them this past weekend for the first time at Red River Gorge in Slade, KY, on a 3 day trip where I never took them off, even at night. I did some rock scrambling, some off trail arch hunting and a few deep creek crossing and they stretched, took a beating and dried superbly. If you dont have the primo cash to get the more expensive pants like most Americans who are on a budget, I would definitely recommend these.
