The North Face Men’s Gotham Down Jacket gives you down warmth and urban style in a handy short jacket-cut. With the Gotham, you can strut your stuff in weather that will have most people making a mad dash for a taxi and you won’t feel like you’re wearing a down dress.
Runs a little big...my boyfriend weighs 170 and is about 5'7" and a large was a little big on him. A medium would have fit perfect...other than that it's great, great price, fast shipping. I'm very pleased.
On paper this jacket looks like a winner, but there are a couple of things to consider. Cut size is large, all of my NF jackets are large, (6'-185). A medium in this jacket is just fine. Front main zipper is a wimp, tough man's jacket with a little wimp of a zipper. Front hand warmer pockets are too small. NF makes enough great jackets to know how to make a good useful pocket. A couple of minor fixes and this jacket is perfect.
My Husband hunted for this jacket since he saw it on one guy in NY Subway. So now he owns it for almost 2 yrs. He likes it a lot and i didn't hear any complains regarding this stuff. This Jacket has "Bomber" Style fit (just a lil bit below the waistline), is very comfortable and extremely warm. Sz Large is perfect for 5'10" and 170 lbs man. Quality and Style are unbeatable, you cannot get wrong with Gotham!
Hi all I would like to know if the hood on this jacket is detachable
Hi all I would like to know if the hood on this jacket is detachable - and what exactly is wrong or bad with the zip? Some one posted that they were not happy with the zip??
I'm loving my Gotham jacket. The down fill makes it very warm on the cold Chicago days, but it's not bulky and sweaty like other coats I've had. The HyVent seems to work well at keeping me at just the right temperature. The pockets are plentiful, but not very big. They also don't hold things in well, so I wouldn't put stuff in there and go rolling around in the snow. The cut of the jacket is a bit more slim and it doesn't look huge and puffy; the elastic sections at the waste help with this. I like how the fur on the hood is removable -- sometimes it's a bit scratchy against my neck. Overall I'd recommend the coat if you want something warm and stylish. Should be a nice coat for the average person.
BEWARE!! Vizzy285's report led me to believe a size Medium would be fine for me, since my stats are 5'9 165lbs currently. I got the medium and I felt like I just pulled a wool sweater from the baby gap out of the dryer after first wash. It "fit" but barely...so I suppose it depends on your build, I got like a 44" chest and I guess my arms and torso are kind of long but I thought I'ma pretty average build. Definitely got the impression that moving around, the protection would be skirted due to the arms hiking up or the waist band hiking up from activity. I'm going with a Large and I strongly urge others to do the same unless they like a very tight fit with little room for movement.
TNF Gotham is a great jacket. The subdued night camo pattern with a fur collar looks sharp compared to others in its class (which doesn't come close). You'll find the jacket light weight but super warm and breathable. Its wind and water-proof. The shell is similar to Gore-Tex material in the durability department but quieter. This jacket is by far the best winter jacket I've ever found. I honestly couldn't ask for a better jacket than the Gotham. Because after having a Gotham I know there isn't one - Try it and see what I blabbing about okay!

Hey guys. I want to buy this jacket. But I m not sure about its size. My chest is 39, however my sleeves are 35 and I am 6-3 & 180 IBS. What should I do?
I've seen a couple of people here in NYC wearing this jacket but mostly only in black color. Having own a couple of TNF jackets including steeps, extremes, transformers, I decided to switch it up a little. So I did my research and found the backcountry website. I got very excited when I found out that there were other colorways for this jacket. What really caught my eye is the Black camo colorway. The gearheads on this website answered all my questions and were very helpful. I bought the jacket the day after. I'm about 5'8" & 175 lbs. and a sz. M fits me perfectly. All i can say about this jacket is that it's very warm and stylish. It also has enough pockets to stow away stuff. The day I "braked in" the jacket, it was about 30 degrees out and it was raining sleet and snow. I only wore a t-shirt w/ a sweatshirt and I didn't even feel any cold. When I got on the train, I've already gotten a couple of "good stares" and some even came up to me and asked where I got the jacket from. Very satisfied with this jacket that I'm thinking of buying another pair on a different colorway.
Hey guys, I've been looking at this jacket for some time
Hey guys, I've been looking at this jacket for some time and thinking of buying it. One question though, I'm a medium in TNF Atlas triclimate. I'm 5'10, 135 lbs, chest 38 in. What size would you recommend?
-update- I ordered a small and it fits great. Not too baggy anywhere! I may have gotten away with a Medium but I don't think I would have liked the fit as much. Plus I still got room to layer so I am satisfied with a Small. The jacket looks awesome, but the pockets are not exactly that functional. However, the jacket is warm and looks good. I like how the cuffs and the hem keep out the wind and cold air. Definitely keeping this one. And I didn't really care for the faux fur, I just unzipped that part. But those are my first impressions. My measurements are 39" chest, 34" arm length. This jacket's hem hits at the waist.
I was also thinking Medium. I just didn't want this jacket to be too baggy. I tried on The North Face Down Mountain Parka in size Medium and it was just too baggy. Just wondering if this jacket has as much room, if so, I should be a size small.
I would suggest you stick with a Medium Size. The North Face Gotham Jacket is cut reasonably full; so if you were s medium in TNF Atlas triclimate - the chances are the Gotham size Medium should work for you. Hope this helps. Good Luck. Jeff Levin
Awesome looks in blk camo, I'm 5'6" 170 and I was swimmin in a med. I normally wear a med in everything. I exchanged it for a small because of the cut of the jacket and I just love the way the small fits. This is an unusually large cut size jacket, might consider down sizing when you buy.hand warmer pockets a bit small, nice fur trim and insulated hood.
Thanks for that review! I am about your exact size 5'6 and 165 and I was considering whether I should go with a Medium or Small. Your review helped me confirm that small would be better. I didn't want a jacket that was too big..thanks
I think I should start this review out with a disclaimer, this jacket is insanely dope and can be too dope so beware that if you are not dope enough you might want to consider another jacket. To take a long story and make it short I have a co-worker that bought this jacket and he was no cool enough to hold onto it so he had to return it ... just sayin! Okay as I was saying this jacket is super duper dope. It's down/puffy so of course it's gonna be puffier than normal but never too puffy but instead super comfy. Pads everything you push against or rest on and the style I can't say enough about. This item when I looked through the pockets I also found in one pocket a handful of awesomeness and in the other more dopeness I have ever seen in a jacket pocket. Sick jacket and everybody needs on but remember if your not cool enough please move on, you may be wasting your time here in the dope section.

I am very picky with my jackets as I get hot a lot but also don't like to freeze. Before this I had the Mcmurdo which was very bulky hard to move about in & that thing just made me sweat even in a t-shirt! This jacket is how every nice and warm but does not make me sweat. Even in 18* temp in NY I was just wearing a collared shirt under this jacket & it kept me nice and comfortable, not cold at all. The only two complains I have is, the fur in the hood is just plain stupid because you wont be able to see through them unless this jacket came with rear view mirrors! They should have made the hood a little smaller then add the fur part so its more practical and it doesn't cover the whole face. But the jacket works fine for me since I took the fur part out. Also the zipper is ridiculous! SHAME ON YOU NORTHFACE!! They want to charge us so much money for a jacket at least put in a proper zipper & don't rip us off!! That's the two reasons I gave it a 4 star but other than that this is a really good jacket. Hopefully next year they will fix these issues and it will be the perfect jacket. But as always got excellent service from backcountry! One of my favorite stores on the internet, I am always bragging to my friends about it.
Alander, jump on the "Chat Now" function in the upper right hand part of your screen or call 1-800-409-4502 and talk to a BC rep. They will know if they are on order.
What size would work best for me? I'm 6'3", 190 lbs, but my chest is 42" and my waist 35" - the sizing chart gives 44"/36-38" for a L, which seems a bit big, but M is 41"/32-34" waist, which seems a bit small.
Anyone with this jacket have a similar build and advice on sizing? Thanks!
Everything about this Coat is great except one thing: The zipper is too small and cheaply made.
I live in Korea where the winters can be quite cold and so far this coat has kept me very warm. But that ZIPPER! What was NorthFace thinking to make such a heavy duty jacket, and put a zipper on it that is so small and weak that it belongs on a child's toy - Barbie or Ken maybe. On my first day it separated at the bottom like most cheap zippers. It is also very hard to get started bare handed and impossible to zip with gloves on. I plan on having a better zipper put in once this one fails - which it will in time.
BUT, aside from that one thing, again it is a GREAT COAT and well worth the cost.
The sizes seem to run big. I am 5'11" 190 lbs and ordered a XL because of my long arms. I had to return that one and got a large, which is still kind of big, but works for me for layering.
By-the-Way KUDOS to Backcountry for their great online chat. I had my replacement coat in no time! Wonderful service BC !
I used to own the Mcmurdo in M (I'm 5'6 135lbs)which
I used to own the Mcmurdo in M (I'm 5'6 135lbs)which I used to sweat in especially under my arms and back wearing only a T-shirt when its 20*-28* out side. I really like the whole style and look of the Gotham but what I wanted to know is will I also sweat in the Gotham? My idea is to stay warm and not sweat. Also how much does the Mcmurdo in M weigh? So I can do a comparison with this one.
Overall, a warm jacket. Hood is really good and keeps the wind out. This jacket looks nice and is warm, so def a good thing to wear around town. I used it skiing for a season and that is the one and only season. The waist band will not stay down and constantly rides up. The material is weak and will not last in the trees. The pockets have no great uses for both skiing and casual. In wet snow or rain the jacket soaked easily and became extremely heavy. Three stars for the warm and wind portection. Othan than that its nothing special
I'm 6'1" and weight about 270 and I where the Gotham jacket in an XL. It fits perfectly even with a sweater on underneath. The jacket runs a little on the bigger side to allow for layering I'm guessing. I have a freind who's in the 300's and he wears an XXL so you should be just fine going with the XL!!!
Went to Alaska over the thanksgiving weekend, with my new NF Gotham jacket. Initially was a bit worried that it might not be warm enough given that it was hitting 0 however with only a t shirt and polartec jumper had no problem and was plenty warm! The jacket proved more the capable of standing up to the Alaskan chill!
The only issue with the jacket was that if it gets wet it can take a while to get dry, however it still remains warm enough.
I ordered this jacket and returned it the same day. It did not meet my needs. I'm a man. I shovel snow. I'm in the woods come winter. I need a real parka. Not something I can't even warm my hands in. Plus the waist band inches up. I enjoy the mcmurdo and the north slope. Real pockets for real men. Real warmth that you can wear a fleece under for real cold. This is a girlie parka for girlie men. It's great for fashionistas.
Hi, I'm 5'7'' (170 cm) and 155 lbs. My chest is about 40-42'' (that's L size of polos I order at asos online store and they fit me perfectly). I'm wearing 32'' waist jeans. Looks like I have to choose between TNF Gotham Small or Medium. But I'm vacillating. Which size would you recommend me to go for? Thanks!
I ordered this for a big 12 year old active boy in an extra large size knowing some sizes are smaller than the stated size. It was a bit bigger, but it was better than being too small. If I had to order it again, I would order it in the right size. The jacket had the 'good looks' for my boy, yet provided the insulation I wanted. It has a durable shell that meets the level of activity it can be put through. The hood with the ruff adequately provides protection from windy freezing conditions.

Hi, I'm 5'5, 130lbs. I tried on a small and it fits okay... but the chest and bicep area are a little poofy meaning its a little large in that area. Does anyone have any experience with Boys XL? Its impossible for me to find one, so I would like to know before purchasing from backcountry.com.
I bought an XL and it fits wonderfully! A tad bit smaller than an adult S and the arms are a little bit shorter, which makes the chest and bicep area look better fitted! So happy with my purchase!
I've had this coat 2yrs now and it's awesome,I wore it when the NY blizzard of Dec 2010 hit and I didn't feel anything penetrating this coat. The only minor complaint about this NF and I own several of them is that the hood is a little oversized but other than that it's perfect. You wont be complaing that it's not warm enough.
I bought this coat for my son for Christmas. I was worried about buying any form of clothing online due to sizing. As soon as my son opened his gift, he tried on the coat and it fit perfectly. We were in NYC walking during the blizzard of 2010 and I kept asking him if he was cold. He was amazed at how warm this coat kept him. Of course that put a smile on this moms face!
Thinking about ordering the Gotham online...tried on Hawthorn
Thinking about ordering the Gotham online...tried on Hawthorn at local store (didn't have the Gotham)...a large fit me fine as the medium was a little too tight in chest and arms but length was a tad long...I am 5'7 and 180 pounds...
Would the Gotham be better in a medium given it is a shorter coat with the cuffs or would a large again be better?
Could someone please expand upon the differences (advantages/disadvantages)
Could someone please expand upon the differences (advantages/disadvantages) of the gotham versus the ice down jacket? seems the ice down has hyvent.. the gotham has exposed buttons..and elastic cuffs. But I am at a bit of a loss to identify further differences that may be relevant.
Hi there, i want to purchase this jacket but don't know what
Hi there, i want to purchase this jacket but don't know what my size would be since i have never purchased a north face jacket before. I like to have a good fitted look rather than baggy. I am around 5'7 to 5'8 and 155lbs. Would a Small or medium satisfy my preference?
I strongly disagree. I too like to have a fitted look. I am around your height and weight and just purchased the Gotham jacket in a small yesterday. Go with the small.
I am searching everywhere for this coat in childrens sizes !
I am searching everywhere for this coat in childrens sizes ! I need a size 10 boys in army fatigue. I saw it once in Black and gray army fatigue and I have nvr seen it again !
I bought this jacket before I went to Sweden. Kept me toasty warm and dry all winter above the Arctic Circle. -30°F is freakin' cold, but no problem with this jacket. Highly recommend it for all non-expedition adventures in extreme environments.
I get it for Christmas as a gift after 3 weeks of use the zipper start giving me problems I gave it back to my friend and she take it to where she buy it and they send it for repair, I have it now for 3 days and the zipper broke again now I put it on the back of my sofa and now looking for a real good jacket. How good it can be without a good zipper? there's no protection on 11 degrees with a bad zipper
It depends on what size your chest is, how long your arms are and what type of fit you are looking for. I am 5'8" 160 with an athletic/muscular build, 39.5" chest, 33" sleeve, and the medium fits me perfectly. Not to tight, not too loose. As a matter of fact, North Face fits pretty true to size, and I wear medium in all of their products. Also, not sure if you looked, but there is a sizing chart 2 lines under the price. Sometimes those can be helpful too.
Back Country had the goods when nobody in my neck of the woods had any in stock! Fast ordering and fast shipping. I was a little bummed to see the price drop right after I purchased it. I got it and I'm very happy with it!
Alright, this is the true review. First, the jacket is sweet! I was very skeptical after reading the other reviews about it being to huge and puffy and crap. Truth is I'm bout 6'3 and skinny. I ordered a large and it is perfect. if you are under 6'o u might want to go with medium but my arm length is perfect on the large. The jacket is warm and not too puffy in fact not really puffy at all. the one draw back that i read in a review that is true is that the zipper suks... expensive sweet jacket with a terrible zipper. other than that i would say the coolest winter jacket out there..
thanx dave for the answer but i already bought small size online. i like a fitting jacket and the site says there is a return policy. thanx tho. have a good one.
This coat is heavy, fashionable, and nicely constructed. HOWEVER, the first week i had it, one day the zipper began to unzip itself from the bottom up while i was wearing it with it completely zipped to the top. I had thought that this was a one time thing, so i forced it back down and rezipped it, which always worked. But it kept happening and got worse and worse. I have now decided to return the jacket, because having a really warm jacket that doesnt zip just doesnt make sense. Especially a $300 North Face. Overall, i would buy this jacket again if the zipper was fixed.
Hi all you gotham lovers...
Can anyone tell me what is the purpose/function/utility
Hi all you gotham lovers...
Can anyone tell me what is the purpose/function/utility of the front zip chest pocket? Why is it zip? Why does it help that it zips and folds over? and what are both the chest compartments meant to hold? The inner pocket with just the Velcro seems to dainty to actual contain something in there securely. Has anyone found a proper use for these pockets?
Bri3383691, I was referring more to the outer chest pockets. The one that zips and has a flap. The functionality of this pocket is confusing to me since it unzips, but isnt removable. Also the smaller pocket it covers seems to small to barely contain anything, let alone the small square of velcro that keeps it closed..
Chest pockets are useful for many things: in town, I use a chest pocket to hold my subway pass, outside of the city I use it to hold my binoculars, or sometimes I stash a trail map in it. I always carry some money, some hurricane matches, memory cards/batteries for my camera(batteries run down quickly in the cold and the chest pocket allows my body heat to keep the batteries useable). In other words, use the chest pocket for anything you want to keep secure.
The zipper is one of those design features that make our lives easier. The zipper opens by pulling it *down*. This means that my keys, matches, money, and so on don't fall out. The flap over the zipper is there simply because you cannot make a zipper waterproof.
The inner pocket may not look rugged, but it is tough enough to hold my cell phone, and for those who use them, MP3 players. When I'm camping in the winter, I use the inner pocket to hold a pair of clean socks -- I can change socks and thereby stay warmer or, if I lose a glove, hey, a sock makes an okay mitten.
Very warm! I'm 6'0" 215 and should have bought a large...however, the XL allows a thick sweater or hoodie...Take the fur off when driving...it tickles my cheeks!!
Hey, i ordered one of these but ordered a 2x, i'm 6'1 170 what size should i get ? If the xl was too big for u then i should get a large also i guess ?
Formidable Jacket against Mother Nature's East Cost Winters.Sizing = 5'6 - 5'9 140lbs - 175lbs. Medium is perfect. Jacket hits at the waist and doesnt ride up with movement. I usually never wear hoods on jackets but this one fits perfect and is adjustable. The only drawback on this jacket is the pockets are not deep at all. Honestly if you need a jacket to store items I would not reccomend this one. If you want a warm, wind resistant, lightweight and stylish jacket then go with this one.
Bought an XL, seems true to size. I'm 6'2" 215lbs. This will replace a NF Verdi jacket. Verdi was heavier and runs way too big. Love it so far, the elastic cuffs are nice, not to mention the removable fur trim. Seems durable enough to snowboard in as well as having good street looks. Only neg is the hood is huge, it swallows my head, but could be good for use with a helmet.
As far as I can tell no one has answered Caleb's question
As far as I can tell no one has answered Caleb's question about the differences between the Graphite Grey and the Black coats... the only difference I can tell from the pictures, is the zipper turns grey. Is this the only difference? Why are the Backcountry prices $20 more?
I now own the graphite grey gotham and a black mcMurdo, and the graphite grey color in the photo is fairly accurate - its a very dark grey, as if you darkend a spot on white paper with a pencil. The black, at least on the mcmurdo, is not a true black; it is a black with sort of a blue component to it. Dont mistake this for the "Ink Blue" color - It looks black under most circumstances unless you have very bright light.
Just received my jacket this June so can't say how warm it will keep me. What I can say is the materiel looks to be first class and the fit is spot on. This thing also has enough pockets it could double as a day pack, only wish it had been made in the USA. The other reviewers have already said how warm and wind proof it is so looks like I did the right thing by picking this one.
See my answer above; the graphite grey is a very very dark grey (pencil grey is actually an accurate description) and the black is basically black, but it has a blue component to it. If you cut and paste both pictures out of the website and put them side by side, you can see they are actually slightly different. The colors represented are pretty accurate, too.
So far I've owned two types of winter coats: really warm ones that look stupid, or really stylish ones that aren't warm. The Gotham changes all that -- it's warm and stylish. Win-win.
Kept me warm when temperatures got to 10 below here in Chicago, and is still great to wear when it's in the upper 20s. The elastic waist and cuffs help keep the wind from getting in, and give it that fitted look. The hood is a bit bulky at times, but it does work.
A+ from me, I know I'll have this thing for a long time.
Just got back from Alaska. The Gotham worked great! If you have long arms like I do..I'd go with the large. It may be a little big in the body, but that will allow you to layer underneath. Nothing is worse than having sleeves that are too short.
This Jacket is very warm. Kept me toasty warm for the entire 5 hours that I was outside in AK when the temp was -37 F and the wind was whipping. I'm 6ft tall 180lbs and a Lg fit perfectly. Highly recommend this Jacket.
That is almost as vague as asking about "earth weather". It's waterproof, windproof, ans warm on its own down to well below freezing. You be the judge.
I replaced the Hawthorn I had for a week with this. The Gotham is a better fit for me. The elastic bottom seals in heat better. I could feel cold air coming up from the bottom in the Hawthorn. The Gotham hood is also more practical because it's not as huge as the Hawthorn (can't see a thing in it). I hope you are not paying $299 for the black and grey. The price tag on the jacket has $279 on it. I called Backcounty about it and they credited me back the difference. I told them about the pricing error and I don't know why they still didn't fix it. The solid colors are $279 on all other sites (Altrec, Mountaingear...).
I absolutely love this jacket, it fits perfectly and keeps me warm on the coldest days. The black camo color is badass and I get mad complements on it everywhere I go.
I ordered this jacket right after Thanksgiving, and received it right in time for the cold New England weather to kick in. It's only been a little over a month, but it's already been a hell of a winter. Ice storms knocking out power for days at a time, wind chills pushing temperatures well below zero, and it's only gonna get worse come February. And even though it's only been a month, I couldn't even tell you how many times I hear someone comment about how cold it is, and I honestly don't even feel it. I just shrug my shoulders and keep walking. Even with a t-shirt, just zip this thing up, flip up the gigantic hood, and you'd swear it's spring. I used to dread going out to shovel or clean off the car, but now I'm looking for reasons to put on this jacket and get out in the cold.
I'd go with an XL, unless he has really long arms. These jackets run pretty true to size but they also fit a bit baggy. If he has very long arms I'd bump up a size.Hope that helps.
I saw it a few months ago but i din't know where to buy it. i had been lokking for it until i found it at this website. This jacket its so cool, i give it a 5 stars
I have 2 years with the Jacket and I must admit, It's the best clothing investment I've made with regards to gearing up for the cold weather in NYC. Especially in frigid conditions, this coats does the job. It keeps me warm to point that I forget that Im outside. Furthermore is light and very durable. Although is a little pricey it's worth every penny.
Do you mean the McMurdo? If so this jacket will be very nearly as warm but not quite. The extra length is gong to add to the McMurdo as well as the exterior. It's a little more wind resistant. Hope that helps.
WasSup ALL! I am from BROOKLYN N.Y.C! let me make this short... So let me tell you something about this jacket, This jackets awesome!I have this jacket in graphite grey. the colors nice, u can match it with almost everything This jackets awesome! its very warm with the 550 goose down ,its not too long and not too short in length .what i love the most are the sleeve band and the waist band that traps all the warm body heat inside this jacket ,so the sleeve and the waist band gives it a G.Q Look in style and also with the removable Eskimo style warmth fur trim hood and it is removable. I like it better with the Eskimo style warmth fur trim because it feels and looks P.I.M.P out!! Like......."BaLLa" other than that this jacket is filled with many pockets and also light weight when i carry it in the movie theaters and around when i feel hot.
It says it is on this page..as to what extent?, who knows.------------To the extent that water doesn't go through it. If TNF says it's waterproof, then it is.
very warm ,keeps wind out ,I love it for that especially ,winter in N.Y. I am not happy with the pockets they are small and when u walk the dog otherwise its great
