The North Face Freedom Pant - Men's

Item # TNF4330

Not into ski pants that fit like plumb-smugglers? Neither is The North Face Freedom Pant. This pant has a relaxed fit and a loose cut through the butt, thighs, knees, and cuffs.

  • HyVent 2L fabric and fully taped seams block wetness
  • Chimney Venting System uses exterior thigh vents and gaiter vents to create airflow and dump excess heat
  • Articulated knees increase mobility
  • Hand-warmer pockets store heat packets on cold days

Bottom Line:

Relaxed and recycled.

Happy with these pants. Wore thermals & a shell underneath them in 4 degrees celsius to keep warm as they are not insulated. Found them to be waterproof and comfortable. Good amount of pockets. Size small was a good length on my husband who is 5' 5" and usually has trouble finding pants that aren't too long.

These pants are sweet!! I haven't used them on the slopes yet but will be doing that next week! They have held up in super cold Iowa temperatures though while shoveling endless snow piles as well as sledding and playing outside with my daughter. I am kind of in between a Med/Large but I went with Large. I'm 5'11", 195 lbs, 35" waist and I think I could have gone with a Medium. However with the waist adjustment and belt loops I'll be fine...

Non-Insulated

By:
December 26, 2010

I have been very happy with these pants. The features that made me buy these pants are the chimney vents and the adjustable waist feature. My baselayer has never gotten wet while wearing these pants. I normally wear 33 waist and 32 length and the mediums work perfectly.

These pants are warm. I also have the insulated version when the temps are really cold. I wear these pants if the high temperature is above 15 degree F. If the high temps is predicted below that I go for the insulated version.

good fit, looks cool, but not high performance

By:
February 7, 2010

These pants fit me great and look great as well but its price reflects its quality.

The rip-stop fabric on the bottom is poorly sewn on to the the pants. my brake ripped right into them about 2 weeks into the season. The fabric patch tore at the stitching almost all the way around. Poor job. I also have a buddy, same story, same rip.

These pants also have poor waterproofing technology. If you ski powder, wet snow, or sit on wet chairlifts, these pants will allow moisture to protrude the fabric. These pants have Hyvent tech which is TNF's waterproof/breathable technology, but doesn't seem to work that well.

Bottom line, if you want a product that you can rip groomers in, will fit and look sick than this is the right pant for you. but if you ski powder, tomahawk in powder, jump into powder, sit on chairlifts with snow on it, this pant doesn't quite hold up.

Typically ski pants are a little baggy and you can get away with missing some inseam, so i would probably recommend the XL/Regular. You could probably get away with a Large/Regular. I am 6'2", 185lbs., 34X34 and i have worn TNF pants at Medium/Regular. Hope this helps.

North Face Freedom Pant

By:
January 14, 2010

Have used these pants twice now. Once it was really cold and snowy, layered with long johns and was perfectly comfortable. The other day it was very warm and wet, kept 100% dry. Love the thigh vents. The pants are extremely comfortable and seem very durable. My only complaint is that I wish it had more pockets, there is only one pocket on the right front thigh along with the two zip pockets on the hip. I love these pants though. I am 6', 170 lbs, I bought the medium and they fit perfectly. No regrets here.

Great Pants

By:
December 21, 2009

These pants fit very well without being overly baggy or too tight. I am 5' 8.5" with a 30 waist and the size small goes right to the bottom of my boot without overlapping. I have been out in 15 degree temperatures with only a midweight base layer underneath and remained comfortable (these are the uninsulated version). As far as features, for smaller well groomed northeastern resorts these pants offer plenty of protection and pockets and vent well for the price! Anything else or more expensive would be overkill. The choice of colors is great too.

Very Nice

By:
October 1, 2009

Since these are the uninsulated version i doubt they have the heatseeker eco like it says they do, however they do have a nice brushed poly lining. The outer material is very very durable and they block wind and snow fully. I've never had to use them on a rainy day so i can't attest to the waterproofness of them. They don't offer tons of warmth but the relaxed fit means you can layer all you want. When you're doing work and those legs start burnin these pants have the best ventilation system ever. Between the ankle vents (uncloseable), the side knee vents and the fly you can customize breathablilty. Great pant for the price. I am six feet tall and weigh 160 lbs. and the medium fits great(thanks to a little help from the waist pull tabs!)

CHEAP...not in a good way.

By:
January 15, 2011

Okay granted, I got last year's model, so maybe they've improved but...I bought a pair at REI for a decent amount of money. I had them sitting in my closet for a couple months anticipating my next snowboarding venture. The VERY FIRST TIME I took them on a mountain, I went off a jump and landed a bit wrong (on my arse). Now I'm not fat by any means, and the fall, while certainly painful, was not that bad. Nonetheless, one of the metal snap closures completely broke, as in the metal actually split apart. I took them back to REI and thankfully, got a full refund. I opted instead for the slightly more expensive (but totally worth it) Smarty 686 3-in-1 cargo pant. I recommend you save yourself some hassle and do the same. These pants are cheap, and not in the good way. The Smarty 686 pants have been fantastic.

Survive a real winter snow pant!

By:
January 15, 2011

Got these for my son in Minneapolis. They are having a real winter and so they have had a great test drive! He says they are the cats meow for shovelling, snow blowing or snow sculpting! Fit is just right and the uninsulated version with just a pair of long underwear under is perfect for active use. Good so they don't drag in the snow or have gaps to let snow and cold in. He's @ 5'9" and thin and the regular is fine.

As long as they're making, I'm buying. The fit and construction are excellent, the venting works wonders and the cargo pocket is as thoughful as any pocket on the market - a simple velcro closure ON TOP of the thigh (think about chairlift access and not falling sideways on your cargo). The only thing they could do to ruin it is to change something. Try them on in a store to get the sizing right - lot's of options.

Comfortable, seem durable, happy with purchase

By:
January 5, 2010

I have worn these pants out sledding with my kids and to blow the snow off of the driveway a few times. The bottoms of the legs are reinforced so they don't ravel if they are stepped on. The waist closure is reinforced with Velcro tabs to keep the snap snapped. Overall these seem to be well made. They fit me well. I bought XXL and am on the larger side of XXL and they fit nicely. This is the only XXL ski pant under $300 that I found in a short inseam, so I am happy that I like them so well.

Decent pant for the price

By:
February 22, 2010

They do a pretty good job for resort skiing but I've had to shelve them for anything that requires crampon use - cuffs are too baggy. Actually the pants do run baggy - I often feel like a bit of a park-rat when wearing them.

That being said, they keep me warm and dry and they're durable. I'm on my second season of heavy use and usually my gear only last about three seasons due to wear. The only damage so far are the normal slices from ski edges.

It would be nice if they had a little more pocket space and the fit is a bit off but aside from that they're solid, warm, well-built pants good for resort skiing.

Great Pants

By:
March 13, 2012

I have long legs (35" inseam) and have some trouble finding pants that are long enough. The Medium Long size fits me perfectly. I wasn't sure whether to buy insulated or uninsulated. I opted for the uninsulated, and have been very happy with the choice. I'm using a lightweight layer of long underwear under the pants, and I've been comfortable skiing in temperatures ranging from 3 degrees to 35 degrees. These pants have a nice brushed lining, I think that makes them warmer than anticipated, even though they are uninsulated. Velcro tabs at the waist make it easy to adjust the waist for perfect fit. These are really well made pants. Hard to think of any way to improve them, maybe add a patch pocket to the left leg for a little more storage.

awesome snowboarding pants

By:
February 17, 2012

Size: I'm 5'8" and 160lbs, and I normally wear 32x32 pants. Based on reviews and sizing charts, I originally got a Small Short, but it was too short. I returned them for a Small Regular, and it's perfect.

Performance: I wore these on a recent snowboarding trip to Utah. The temp each day ranged from 15 to 35 degrees. I paired them with a single base layer, I only felt a chill whenever I sat on the lift for a while. Otherwise, they kept me completely dry, and I never felt the wind.

They look great - not baggy like most snowboarding pants, but enough room for whatever moves you throw at them.

Best I've ever worn

By:
February 3, 2012

Best pants I've ever worn skiing. They keep me warm and dry. Most importantly--they have great articulation in the knees and great lining material. No matter what position my legs are in, I never feel them get tight, and never feel the lining bunch-up or cling to my base layer. Great adjustable vents on the thighs, not the knees. Only grip is the belt loops--they are too few and too far apart in the back, making them almost useless.

A decent pant overall

By:
January 10, 2012

If you run warm, no need to go with the insulated version. Generally I wear a mid-weight base layer underneath and am good to temps as low as the single digits. Mainly just general-use, nothing overly active. I was hoping they would have a bit slimmer fit, but to that end they are not overly bulky. Only gripe is that after a few rounds of ice build-up on the cuffs, the stitching has started to fray. Belt loops, zippered-fly, front pockets and a cargo pocket are super handy. Elastic style gaiters feel a little chincy, but they have held up so far!

Great Ski Pants

By:
January 10, 2012

I purchased these pants after a lot of debate between the insulated and non-insulated version. I ended up getting these "non-insulated" ones and couldn't have been happier. With a thin base layer beneath them, I remained warm in temperatures that ranged anywhere from just below 10 to mid 30 degrees. On a hot day the side vents can be opened to help you cool down easily. I am about 5'10" with a 36" waist and the Large was a perfect fit with boots on. The waist has velco straps which can be used for minor adjustments. The belt loops are also a nice addition. I attached a pair of suspenders to these belt loops in order to keep them up while skiing. The red pants look great when paired with a with a black jacket.

I agree with Mike. I have a 33 inch waist and I bought the Mediums and have some adjustment left but I don't think it would fit a 35 inch waist. You might want to look at a Large/Long. The regulars are going to be borderline too short if you have over a 32 inch inseam. There is a size chart under the item selection and it is fairly accurate.

Nice pants

By:
December 14, 2011

These pants are great. I used them this past Saturday on a day that I thought was going to be pretty hot but ended up being quite windy. I was able to use the sidevents to stay the perfect temperature all day long.

Pros:
1. I got the longs- I'm 6'4" or so and they are long enough for me
2. the sidevents have mesh inside
3. I got XXL- the waist is far too big but I wear a belt with suspenders attached and the room in the leg is awesome. (I'm not a parkrat, but do have large thighs-room matters).
4. For the price I think these will do nicely for a couple of seasons skiing and teaching
5. I run hot, and the soft liner in the uninsulated pant is soft when I'm just rocking boxerbriefs underneath

Cons:
1. no suspenders, but does have belt loops.
2. sometimes the liner may grab polar fleece and be "catchy", but no big deal overall
3. the bottoms are VERY wide in opening diameter so they will drag when you're wearing normal shoes. but not with ski boots.

these are great, I'd buy them again given the chance.

What's not to like

By:
December 22, 2011

I'm 5'8 and weigh 185. The Large-Short length works out just right for my 35" waist and 30" inseam. Nice to find ski pants in a short length. Sizing is very true to their chart and a bit forgiving with the waist adjustment.

I went with the uninsulated and for skiing they are very good into the low 20's when used with a mid/light-weight base layer. They are lined. Pacific NW weather hasn't dropped to the single digits yet so can't say how they'll do when things get colder. If you spend a lot of time in colder/windy conditions you might want to consider the insulated version.

There are enough pockets including a large one on the right leg, all but that one zip... the large one only has a velcro'd flap and no zipper.(I'd like to see a zipper there too).

The leg fit, like most of todays ski/snowboarding pants is full, little tailoring there but they are warm, keep you dry and look right. I like them and giv them 5 stars.

Great Value, Much Improved

By:
November 8, 2011

I had an older version of these, and while they were durable, and a great value, there were some pretty annoying shortcomings. The new version solved those problems. There are well located vents on the thigh, they added belt loops, and the front pocket openings are longer so you can get your hand back out once you have grasped the car key. The pockets also seem deeper. I was looking at another brand, and took another look at these because they had been such a good value. With the changes, I'm very satisfied with them.

Fine pants, funky fit

By:
October 12, 2011

I sported these guys all last season. Did me right on all but the cold/windy days.
The only problem I had, was that they were a tad bit short (Cuff was barely below my top buckle) Returned them for the medium long version, which I had to mail order.

My pant size is 32/34, but it would seem, based on NF's sizing scheme, that people with an inseam longer than 32 are invariably Andre the Giant. The Medium long are easily made for a dude 300lbs+, especially in the ass, thighs, knees, well just about everywhere but the waist. I'm all for a loose fit, but these just look goofy. Try ON the long size before you buy

Regarding fitment it seems I'm right on the line between a Large, or possibly X-tra large. I've had large snow paints of another off brand that were a bit too tight on the waste but I was still able to use them.
For jeans I wear 38w, 30L (or 29)
I'm thinking the Large size (with some waist adjustment on this pant), and short inseem should work. Agree?

I'll be wearing snug fitting long underwear or underarmor and of course ski boots. I think in past my thicker layers may have made the pants tight. I'm somewhat stocky with strong legs so as long as their is room enough in the leg area, waste I should be ok. Thanks for any input! (also what is the exchange policy if they don't fit right?)

I really like these pants. The design and materials are top notch, I guess to be expected with North Face gear. They really are extremely waterproof and shed water like wax paper. Pretty warm with just a medium base layer. I really wanted to keep them, but I returned them because they were a bit baggier through the legs than I thought they would be, but that could be due to the size I wear I'm a 36 x 32 for reference. I'll have to look for another TNF pair of pants as I really liked these ones.

BOUGHT these recently cause i have an odd waist, 36 is too loose 34 too tight. 35 just right! and these fit exactly like that! relaxed fit, surprisingly warm for non insulated. They are warmer and thicker than my Columbia brand i had so that's a plus.

on super cold days with a good base layer that's not a big deal anyhow. backcountrys service is great as always, got them quick and well packed.

So Far so Great

By:
March 15, 2011

Before I bought these pants it had been quite a while since I had shells that actually repel water. I have rode the lifts for a weekend in them and had nothing but good things to say. They kept me dry and warm.

I've also hit the backcountry for a weekend or two and these pants have performed well. The vents in the knees were adequate to keep me cool on the hike and the pants held up to some nasty winds on the ridges.

The only thing I wish they had were some suspender type connection so they stayed up a little better, but I guess I shouldn't buy pants then. Overall good deal at backcountry.com and good performance thus far.

no snow balls for me. these are awesome!

By:
March 13, 2011

these are great pants. they are light weight and fit very well, the liner is really nice on the skin if your going sans base layer and slick enough that it goes on well if you are using a base. the chimney venting keeps me cool but don't bail with them open unless you like snow balls in your pants. the adjustable waist works well but the velcro stuck to my polartec shirt and pulled some threads out, no biggie. all in all, awesome pants.

These are the only pants that I have found that come in a "long " length. He wishes they came in the vibrant colors that others are available in (like lime green and orange)

North Face Freedom Pant - uninsulated

By:
February 28, 2011

Great snow pants. I got the un-insulated because of a review I read and they were spot on. You don't need any more than these unless the temps are down into the teens - even then I'd just wear a fleece layer underneath.

I tried on a lot of snow pants and had a hard time getting a good fit. The north face come in the usual small, medium and large sizes but also come in short, regular and long inseams. That provided a perfect fit.

I also appreciate that the thigh vents have mesh. I tried on another, more expensive brand that didn't have the mesh. That seems a little indiscreet to me. I know, I'll have some sort of base layer underneath, but still.

If there was one thing I would change it would be a strap or snaps for more adjustability at the ankle. They were fine over snowboard boots, but I might want a tighter fit for sledding in the cul-de-sac with the kids on those occasional Seattle snow days.

Backcountry.com was definately a great place to buy these from. We have two North Face company stores in Seattle, but they didn't have the combination of size and inseam that I wanted in stock - they would have had to order from Chicago and charge me the shipping. Backcountry.com had exactly what I wanted in stock, they upgraded me to free overnight shipping and at a price well below the company store. Well done! They are on the top of my list when looking for that next purchase.

I have been looking for a durable pair of shell pants, that fit. Being 5'6" most ski pants are both too baggy and too long. The Freedom Pant in a short fits pretty good.

I have yet to test them out in real powder other than the stuff I had to clear from the driveway but they did survive a good ski day so far!

Killer Pants

By:
January 23, 2011

Just returned from a work week in Pittsburgh where I would go off hiking for a couple hours in the afternoon. These pants performed like a champ. I'm from southwest Louisiana and not at all acclimated to northeast winters. I put on a pair of cotton thermals underneath and took off. I stayed warm and very comfortable in these pants and at one point laid down in the snow for several minutes just to test them out. I only felt a slight cool sensation through them. I'm 6'1" with a 33/34 waist and ordered the medium long which fit perfectly. I highly recommend these pants.

Look at the other reviews but I think you'd be fine in a Large. I'm 5'11" and about 195 with a 35" waist and I went with Large. However, I could have probably gotten by in a medium. There's a Velcro waist adjustment and for me I need those tightened and def. need to wear a belt so you should be good, even if you have to loosen the adjustment tabs a bit.

Bad Fit.

By:
January 8, 2011

I am 6'2" 150 lbs, with a 32" waist, so I got the medium long, and they fit like some parachutes. The waist barely closes in tight enough to fit me, even with wearing thermals underneath. There is a lot of unnecessary fabric, but that is what you get with loose fit. I would recommend looking at something with an alpine fit.

Love them

By:
January 6, 2011

I'm 6'3" 200 and the Large fit perfect. I thought they would be a little more form fitting but when they say its a free fit, they mean it. I have spent some days on the mountain as well as snowblowing with these and they perform well. I'm sure with an application of NikWax every year or two these will last me a long time. One gripe: I was snowblowing and every now and then I will give the blower a little extra umph by pushing it along with my thighs. After doing this I noticedthe area I would use to push with my thighs wetting out really fast. I let them dry and took them skiing the next week and again, they wet out where I was pushing. After an application of Nikwax tx-direct spray on (I had to use two coats where the issue was) I didn't have it wet-out again. Keep in mind this was only after one snowblowing. So I guess the DWR isn't so durable after all. Anyway - I still love em... great buy for the money.

Can anyone tell me if I should get these pants or the insulated version of this? Just got a pair because they fits well but not sure if I should get the insulated ones since I have never ski. I got a pair of North Face flennel for the base layer. Would both be enough or I should switch to the insulated with the flennel under? These pants with a base layer (especially an insulating base layer like your flannel pants) will be plenty warm for temps in the 30s. I live in Alaska and only have desired insulated pants when I'm at a complete stand still (like belaying on an ice climb) or hanging out at camp. And both those times the temperature was probably somewhere between -5 and +10F. I only had my north face liberation pants (gore-tex shell) and merino wool baselayer. You'd likely overhead with insulated pants unless they were ventable and the insulation was insubstantial.

Best Pant Ever

By:
September 18, 2010

I put a pairthese pants through three seasons of hard abuse. Hiking, smacking against tree branches, bushwacking through thick alder stands, even used them when doing firewood, and although they were a little worn looking on the knees from crawling around trying to teach little kids to ski and the ripstop around the bottom of the legs was puling off they only reason I had to retire them was that I finally outgrew them. I was never cold cold in these pants, and my underlayers became a little damp only on the rainiest days of the season. Dollar for dollar, you won't find a better pant anywhere.

Simply great

By:
February 19, 2010

This is my second season with The North Face Freedom pant. They have held up great for skiing and just stomping around in the snow. The fit is great and they offer enough space for me to move around without any restrictions. I normally wear a 33" waist and have a 33" inseam (32" is too short, 34" is too long, I have to have everything tailored). These are the perfect length for ski boots and for my snow boots. I have worn mine with a Patagonia Capilene 2 base layer down to about 15 degrees and am plenty warm sitting on the ground, sled or on a chair lift. The cargo pocket is great for any extra stuff that won't fit in my jacket. One nice feature is the lift ticket clip in the pocket. There is one on my TNF Odyssey softshell jacket, but when in use it leaves a little opening that snow can get into the pocket through. I just use the clip on the pants, and that way I don't have to worry about my hand warmer pocket getting wet.

The park fit is the baggier of the two fits and the free fit is the less baggy of the two fits. The free fit is a pretty standard fitting pant, roomy enough for freedom of movement, but not overly baggy. The park fit is more of a park inspired fit, more of a modern, baggy cut, not that you're swimming in it, but baggy enough so you don't look like you just came from the race course. The free fit sounds like the one you're looking for if you're looking for less baggy.

This was my first pair of ski pants and they were really good. The black pants also come in a short leg inseam (Large/Short) which seems to be hard to come by in any type of ski pants so was great for my stature.

Got these pants bc i dont ski very often and didnt feel like dropping too much cash on some ski pants. Went to park city for four days of full day skiing and couldnt be happier with this product. Temps and conditions ranged from 30's and sunny and dropped to low teens and dumping snow, but it didnt matter. I was comfortable in all conditions (i used the north face long johns on the cold days). Now i use them as a cold weather jogging pant in North Florida in temps ranging from 25 - 40. Very comfortable, just a little noisy. Im a fairly lean 6'2 and 185 lbs. and it felt like the waist was snug at first but was never uncomfortable on the slopes or running with the large, normal length. Support this company, as it is amazing.

There must be a mistake in the specs. The insulated version has a 60 Gram Heatseeker insulation package, where the uninsulated pant has a Thermo stretch liner. nice resort skiing pants..., maybe a little warm for spring tours.

they have more lining than i thought they would so they're warm, but have great venting and GREAT pockets (imagine that, front pockets in ski pants)

i'm 6' and a 33 waist, i got a large, it's a little baggy, but no need for a belt (the adjustable velcro works fine), could have probably done a medium, but didn't want to send them back.

they seem burly enough..., time will tell.

Party in my Pants

By:
December 15, 2009

I really liked skiing in these bad boys - they're a run-of-the mill ski pant that gives you the right options without an insane price tag. The front pocket's good for stashing bulkier stuff - velcro closure is solid but i wouldn't put my keys in it. The venting system is pretty smart in how provides a gaiter that keeps the snow out but lets air flow most of the way up your leg. Knees are a little articulated for comfort and there's a fleecy lining (NOT insulated). There's an extra layer of canvas where your boots rub together for durability too. Adjustable waist straps are a must if you're skiing over the holidays and grandpa won't lend you his suspenders.
Usually wear a 32"/32" and the Med/Reg was right on.

Too much "relaxed fit" for me

I tried these on and I did not like the relaxed fit. I wanted them for alpine skiing. They seemed more like a snowboarding pant. I am 6'1" and 170 lbs. there just seemed to be way too much material in the knees and pant legs. I ordered the TNF Liberation pants instead--these are supposed to have a standard fit. The Liberation is $178 and the Freedom pant is $128. I would have preferred to pay less, but I didn't like the relaxed fit.

The Best

Skiing for 25+ years, I have found that these North Face Freedom pants are absolutely perfect for me. I am 6'1 200 pounds, and the size Large fits absolutely perfect. Even if I gained some winter weight, it has an velcro adjustable waist. Not only is the fit perfect, but one pair of Patagonia Cap3 bottoms are all I have ever needed underneath to keep me perfectly warm and dry. I have 2 pairs....1 black.....1 grey.........These are all I will ever need.

Sick so far...

Just a stoke report. Just bought these for the upcoming season. Personally for me (6' 175, waist 34) TNF ski pants always fit me perfect. Not too tight, not too lose, and are cut well in all areas. These do just that. They are the perfect fit, look and feel. Havn't gotten them dirty yet, but soon will. If you are looking for a cheap pant, that looks cool, and have a very well rounded look, feel, these are them. Will report back after I find out if they are functional.

Great Pants!

These pants are perfect. The insulation is not too heavy and not too light and the thigh pocket is great on the top of the leg is a very smart idea.
The other thing I like about these pants is that I have a 30 inseam. The "short" size fits me perfect. All the other pants I have ever own come with a standard inseam of 32, so the bottoms of the pants get all torn up.

I recommend these pants to everyone!

Awesome pants

I bought these pants in the first place because I was on the budget. I didn't expect anything extraordinary, but these pants didn't let me down. They were comfortable, not too warm not too cold (temperature was around 30F). I never thought of them and I think this is the best compliment one can give to a piece of gear.

One side note though, I originally purchased size Large Long, but they turned out to be too long, so I had to exchange them for a Normal length. Those fit perfectly. I am 6' 0" tall, 182 lb.
