Good, but not great

These shorts are good, but not BTN. The slit up the side of each leg is so long, it basically creates large fabric flaps on the back of the legs. Add 70%+ humidity and temps above 70 and it seems as though the shorts are almost slowing you down. I recommend a shorter pair of the BTN line and don't count on the waterproof claims of the fabric.

Pretty Good. Wasn't blown away.

I'd heard people just RAVE about their BTN shorts, so finally I dropped down the cash to get a pair. Yes, they are probably one of the best if not the best pair of shorts, but at almost double the price of other great shorts when found on sale (always search the sales; you get usually 50% off on stuff like that), I don't think I'll buy another pair.

The pockets are done very well, which if you like to carry lots of stuff in well places, well constructed pockets on the sides and rear, these are good. Of course, that also comes with a (very small) weight penalty, so if 5Ks are your thing, or minimalist marathons, these are not your race shorts. Still, for a 2 hour jaunt through the woods it allows you to carry some food along with your water bottle.

Pretty Cool, Indeed

The sounding board from me on The North Face Better Than Naked Cool Short - Men's
will be pretty similar to the crew shirt as it is one of the better running shorts out there. The waist sizing is pretty true to size while the inseam is slightly short, but not too much which is great for long training runs or competitions. The body mapped ventilation can make any temperature not too warm and the water repellancy is better than expected. If you're okay with a slightly shorter inseam and at least like to run, then get these. You won't be disappointed.
