Down vests, while awesome, always made you look like the Michelin Man. That is, until The North Face Men's Aconcagua Vest came along. Luckily, The North Face designed the Men's Aconcagua Vest with warmth and style both in mind. Baffle-stitched 550-fill power down provides light, efficient insulation without puffing you up like a blowfish. The Aconcagua fits easily under trim shells due to its svelte shape, and looks even better over a buttondown shirt or a sweater when you're raking leaves in the yard.
Bottom Line:
The Aconcagua Vest has the warmth of down without the airbag silhouette.
Bought the vest, but didn't know that North Face is now producing its clothing in China. Cheap materials and bad manufacturing on zipper, seams and down quality. To add insult to injury, returned the item, but never got a refund back, -although Backcountry accepted the vest back and attempted to supposedly issue refunds. Buy at your own risk!
this is a sweet vest, slightly less loft than the Nuptse vest so it has a slightly different look, fits great, and is a great layering piece to add on those cold days.
Besides the price, what's the difference between the Northface
Besides the price, what's the difference between the Northface aconaqua vest and the Nuptse vest? I can't find any to look at here in Houston to compare!
Not totally sure if i'm 100% accurate, but the Nuptse vest might also be sewn through as opposed to the baffle design. This means that where it's stitched, there essentially is a line of no insulation between you and outside. So cold air can get in through the stitching. The Aconcagua is baffled which means there are no places where you don't have a lack of down. You're totally covered cause they've stitched it into baffled layers so everything is covered. The Nupste may make up for the design with the 700 fill. They would probably be comparable in warmth if i'm right about the design. What the Nupste makes up for in fill power it loses in design.
The Nuptse vest has 700 fill power down, while the Aconcagua has 550 fill power down. Basically the Nuptse has a higher quality (more expensive) down in it.
This vest has been great so far. It keeps your core very warm and like the description it has a bit of a slimmer fit so it does not make you look huge. I get a lot of compliments on it.
This is my second down vest. The first one was a North Face Nuptse down vest. That one was a 700 fill power and was too warm for me (unless it was freezing outside). The Aconcagua is a 550 fill power and keeps me warm without overheating and the bulk of other down vests. The pockets are handy for keeping all of your peripherals stowed in place. Also, it looks great camping or going out on a cold night. I bought a medium and it fits perfectly (I am 6'0", 175lbs with broad shoulders). Get it and you will not regret it!
The North Face Aconcagua down vest has to be the warmest piece of clothing I own. Here in Colorado the weather can change on a dime, this vest is perfect for any conditions that get thrown at me. It's perfect for layering under my shell for a day on the slopes, or to wear over a long sleve on a cold day. It is super lightweight and easily stuffs into a small pouch and takes up very little space in a pack. I wold highly reccomend this vest, it is versitlie and stylish and can be worn on almost any occasion. A++
I bought this vest for my Husband for Christmas and he loves it. It's not to puffy like some of the puffer vests can be. I got him the brown to wear over his lightweight zip-up hoodie jacket he has in green. I also bought the medium and it fit perfectly. My husband is 6' and 145 pounds. Great vest for the money. I highly recommend getting it if you're on the fence.
It might zip in part way, but since it's not part of a jacket system, the zippers (if they will start to zip at all) probably won't match up perfectly at the top. i've zipped jackets together before that weren't made for each other. It might work but you'd have to try it in the store.
It's light and so much warmer than a fleece vest that it's not even in the same world. A little puffy - but hey, all that air is what keeps you warm! I'm 6'2" 185 and a L fits great. Not usually a big fan of TNF, but this is quality.
First off, the vest fulfilled all my expectations: great snug fit, excellent layering item or stand alone, long enough back, with an excellent collar, no Michelin Man here. I am 6' and weigh 185, but I'm a little on the leaner side so I'm in that netherworld of large and medium, which is why I NEVER buy clothes online. I took a chance and bought the large which, of course, was too large. I needed a medium THE NEXT DAY. I took a real leap of faith and used Backcountry's IM live customer service system and had my medium vest the next day! In a world of ever more incompetence I was both surprised and encouraged...some folks are truly doing it right. Thanks!
I got this vest in gray because I live in CA, and wanted something to keep me warm during the "winter" without wearing a full-on coat. I was also nervous at first because I didn't want to look like a turtle either. 1. This vest pretty much runs according to size, maybe a little big. I am 6'1, 170 and I got a medium (i like things slim fitting). The fit is perfect. 2. Super warm. 3. I also love how soft it is. Sometimes when you get down jackets, the seams can be a little harsh, or the exterior can feel like a space suit. This one is soft and flexible to the touch. No wooshy sounds when you move (you all know what i'm talking about). 4. The only con is that it's not waterproof...but that's expected for a down vest. I'm going to buy the women's version for my fiance...
We checked here in the warehouse and yes, it is truly BLACK. The previous problems of the Black actually being a Navy Blue must have been resolved- as they are indeed black here.
To get a Rep from Backcountry click the "Chat" button in the upper right corner of the site. They respond quite promptly and I've had them check colors on things before. They're very helpful.
This vest is very comfortable and doesn't get in your way. As others have said, it's not too puffy like some vests. I wear it before and after running, kayaking and what not. It's also low enough profile that it's comfortable to wear while sitting in a chair with your laptop. I expect I'll be packing it along next winter for something to put on under a softshell when the going gets cold since it seems to be very stuffable. There are a plethora of pockets which is nice too...and they all zip up!
This item was listed as "black" but I recieved navy blue...twice. Apparently the black vest advertised on the site is actually navy blue. After two exchanges through backcountry a customer service rep explained to me that is just the hue of the vest and it is actually black. But everyone that I showed the vest to immediatly identified it as a blue vest but for some reason this site wants to call it black.
Typically down will always work its way out somehow in a down anything! You could seam seal to prevent the problem or seam tape. You should never pull them out if they are sticking out because that simply opens the hole to more. You should try to push any feathers back in to the garment.
Keeps me warm no matter where I am. Very light if I have to take a layer off and store it. Can't think of anything else I would want out of a vest. Good job North Face!
This is my first down vest, and I am really impressed. Especially since I've heard that in recent years The North Face has let their quality slip. It seems really well made though, and warm even with just the 550 fill. Fit is great also.
What is the difference in length of the Men's north Aconcaqua
What is the difference in length of the Men's north Aconcaqua Down vest and the Women's Northface Neptuse down vest? In the past I have purchased men's small northface vests for the extra length. I'm 5'11 and must have a slightly longer torso than most women.
I really like the cut of this vest. Its not bulky like a lot of down vests. I'm 6'5" and weigh just under 200, and the large fits me perfectly. Usually I have to buy an XL to accommodate my height, but then the extra width of whatever I buy ends up looking kind of loose and sloppy. Not with this though. Good job, North Face.
This is my second purchase of a North Face product on this site. My experience to date has been great and I look forward to future purchases on this site. As far as the vest, I couldnt be happier. Very comfortable, fits great, and a cool coat to have for the spring. I highly recommend this coat.
I recently got this piece and love it! I have the Aconcagua Jacket and love that, this is great for layering or when it isn't that cold!!And the price I got it for at Backcountry is cheaper than used ones on ebay!!!
This vest is very attractive and warm. However, I wore it twice and it ripped. Thankfully, Backcountry.com has an awesome guarantee and agreed to allow me to return for a refund. I will now always look for new outdoor gear at Backcountry.com first!
I agree with the reviewer who called this a "sweet vest." It's just the right weight for everyday wear, and I think that I have in fact worn it every day since it arrived. I'm 6' even, with a slightly narrow build, and the medium fits me perfectly.
The vest fits great and is plenty warm, especially when layering. Kept me warm in very windy weather down into the 30's and 40's, with a jacket. My only gripe is what usually happens with down filled things - noticed small feather tips poking through, but on the same day I received it. Noticed a few more in the following week. It hasn't been a deal breaker, but I didn't exactly put it through the paces and cram it in a pack, so was a bit disappointed for what the vest cost. Still, I got a lot of compliments on it and like i said, it fits well and is very warm without the extreme puffiness of other styles. I'm 5'10/160 and ordered a medium. The inner pocket along the left edge is useful, but I think an outer pocket would be more beneficial so you don't have to unzip to reach what you've stored. Regardless, I'll continue to use it.
Did you get a faulty vest?, because these vests DO have outer pockets. Or are you talking about a chest pocket? Also with any down product you will get the down poking out, especially with this type of material. Now if it was a canvas or heavy thick material then probably not, but TNF is lifetime warranty and B-C is awesome at helping its customers out.

Most North face garments/ apparel fits the same as a t-shirt size. North Face designs tend to be a little boxy, as opposed to fitted. They'll be a little loose around the stomach if you're fit. They are basically a general fit design, nothing too special. Some of their more technical stuff is more custom fitted but most of their stuff just runs normal sizing. Just decide how much you're going to wear under it normally. I'm 5'10" 160 lbs and wear a small unless I want to really add a lot of bulk under it. But i'd still buy a small cause I never really have to add that much insulation to merit sizing up. I wouldn't enjoy a medium most days cause it's too loose in the torso.
The guy I bought it for is 6'4" and 230 and the XXL fit him perfectly. I bought the XL first and that fit my husband who is 6'1" 215 perfectly. It looks great, light weight and really nice!
Yeah, I never had a down vest, so it's the best one ever :). Overall, happy with it. The pockets are cool. It holds all of my non-backcountry everyday gear... blackberry, wallet, keys and ipod. Yeah, this is for the rugged type of guy that wants to stay warm and not haul around a man-purse to carry all of your everyday survival gear.
Fits well, nice athletic fit. Doesn't look too baggy around the midsection. It's light but the material seems pretty durable - I haven't scratched/ripped it yet.
I bought this as a gift for my guy and he loves it! It is warm enough for layering and not bulky at all. I was afraid the vest was going to make him looke like the Michelin man, which it did not. The fabric is soft and comfortable. This was our first north face outerwear, and we will be buying more.
The "select options" drop down menu displays all available sizes...Many of the vest posted on BC.com are available in 2X.Check out: http://www.backcountry.com/store/group/100000114/Mens-Vests.html
I bought this for my son for Christmas and he loves it! Not too bulky and perfect for layering. Keeps him warm in the Michigan winter weather while walking to class.
I bought this vest as a Christmas gift for my husband and he LOVES it. When I first opened it, I thought it felt a little thin and was worried it would not be warm enough. However, it has proven to be an extremely versatile and warm vest (even in a cold Michgian winter!).
I am planning on buying this vest as a gift for my boyfriend
I am planning on buying this vest as a gift for my boyfriend but I'm unsure what size to get after reading some of the conflicting reviews of it being "slim fit" and "runs big". My boyfriend is 5'11" about 180-185 with broad shoulders and I know he is a 34 around the waist. If I order a Large will it be too big??
i love my north face vest it keep me warm out here in the cold and it's not to puffy like the other northface jackets and the good thing about it i got a deal on it thanks backcountry.
Hi I want to buy a navy aconcagua vest but from reading the comments
Hi I want to buy a navy aconcagua vest but from reading the comments here i dont know whether to purchase the "black" or the basin blue. Can you advise please?
I have a north face vest in black as well as the jacket in black. I think black goes better with pretty much everything a person wears. But that is an opinon... not a fact. Go black.
I bought this vest as a present for my boyfriend and he loves it! It fits well without being too bulky. Also, it lives up to the Northface name by being lightweight and extremely warm. I definitly recommend this item.
I purchased this vest as a gift. I was very happy with how fast it came. The quality of the vest is up to par with other North Face gear I own. You couldn't beat the price.
I bought this for layering under a rain jacket, but it's pretty long and puffier than I'd expected. It still does the job and keeps me very warm. I was happy with the lighter fill because I'm pretty warm generally. It also helps to keep my pits dry(er). it even packs down reasonably well inside the chest pocket.
Do you mean you can stuff the whole vest into the chest pocket for compact storage, if so that is sweet and that may be a deciding factor in buying this
The North Face Aconcagua down vest is a garment with great style and good performance with super functional as is customary for the brand The North Face. I recommend it shelters and the little place in my bag
I bought a black Down Vest and it is Navy Blue. My wife has the same vest in black and when you put them side by side you can clearly tell the vest is not black. I hope to get a refund so I can shop somewhere else.
Even though they display it as black and the price tag on jacket says black it is very clearly a navy blue vest. My thought is that there was a mix up in a warehouse somewhere and this site is too careless to correct the problem for some reason. Basically telling me after two exchanges that is the hue of the jacket deal with it.
