I'm a size 31x31 so I picked up a small on SAC. I could wear them because they have some stretch, but they were too tight around the waist and left no room for layering. Also, one friend asked if I bought them in the children's department and his wife said they looked like I was going for the "skinny-jeans" look. No offense to the hipsters but that's not how I roll. The ever-helpful staff at backcountry sent me a medium and I love them. I have to wear a belt for them to stay up but that just makes things easier for bedroom-related adventures. The mediums have plenty of room for comfort and aren't really baggy either. I haven't tested them in the elements yet but I poured some water on them and it beaded up as it rolled right off. Tomorrow I will wrestle a bear to see how well they hold up to more common tasks but so far, they seem as though they will be durable. I think they'll probably be my favorite pants for a long time assuming my dog doesn't bite a hole in them to get to the bacon sandwiches I keep in my pockets. As far as paying full price for them...that depends on your financial situation. But if you see them on SAC or at a good sale price, definitely pick them up.This photo shows how the medium fit me. A photo of the small is uploaded separately for comparison.
these fit me great! they are a little on the snug side, but i like that about them. the pocket placement is very cool. i wish they had cinches in the ankle area so you could keep them above your knee (for river crossing, etc.), but all in all, they rule! maybe a bit thick for summer use though. Update: these pants hold a cuff very well. no need for cinches at all!!
I've been putting these pants through the ringer this summer and I've been really pleased with their performance.
First, the fit is a great balance of something in between "athletic" and "baggy" cut. Being that I'm about 5'9", and 170lb with some chunky thighs, the Medium size leans towards the "athletic" end of the spectrum for me. Having said that, there's a great number of "athletic" cut softshell pants (I'm looking at you, Patagonia) on the market that I flat out won't wear for fear that someone might ask if I have on my sister's pair.
I've used the Overhang pants for some chilly springtime mountain biking and was glad to find that the crotch doesn't snag my saddle when shifting my weight over the back tire. Likewise, the cuffs are snug enough that I don't have to do that bow-legged waddle when wearing crampons. The downside is that it's a stretch to get the pants over the cuffs of my ski boots and they look shrink-wrapped once in place.
The softshell fabric is a tad thicker and heavier than the softshell pants I've owned in the past, though it's certainly not "winter weight" fabric. For working and playing here in Utah and Colorado, where nighttime temps often dip into the 40's even mid-summer, they've been prefect for cool-weather backpacking and climbing.
Overhang pants have a short list of drawbacks: At over a pound, they're on the hefty side for us gram-counters. If I were designing them I'd shave an ounce or two by removing back pockets and also the one on the thigh. The belt loops could be paired down a bit and I'd look into welding or minimizing some of the seams.
Overall, I've found Overhang pants to be durably made and with a good fit for my stocky dimensions. I'd choose a different pair of pants for a trip to a hot climate, but for three-season mountain travel they're perfect.
These pants are a great 3-season lightweight softshell. Cool enough for summer, repels water well and dries quickly.
Two complaints: The fabric pills up quickly when worn with a climbing harness, although I suspect this would happen in other use almost as quickly. The fit is also not quite right. I'm a 30" waist, 32" inseam, and the small pant comes up short. The medium has the right length, but leaves way too much material in the waist. The sizing chart claims 32" inseam for small and 32.4" for medium -- I would say this is not accurate, as I found there to be more than 0.4" difference (looks like 31" vs 32.4").
I just picked up a pair of the Stoic Microlith softshell pants
I just picked up a pair of the Stoic Microlith softshell pants off SAC. They fit great and I love em, and now I want a pair of these. How will the sizing compare? I've heard so many mixed reviews about Stoic sizing that I figured I'd ask first. I picked up the Microlith in Large...
I just got 2 pairs in large, the fit is very similar. I am a 34 waist and I have a little play with the waist for layering, but without a layer they fit fine without a belt (and won't fall off the azz). There is a considerable amount of room around the knees for flexibility even though the material is nice and stretchy.
I was worried about the sizing on these pants. So while I drift between a 36 and 38, depending on the season(it's the fat season right now), I got an XL and they are perfect. I've got some big thighs thanks to genetics and backpacking, and even with the XL they are squeezed ever so gently. Despite this, I could put another layer on underneath thanks to the stretchy attribute of the pant. Speaking of the stretchiness, I can practice martial arts in these without feeling restricted. My first true test is breathability, a nice long run!
Picked up a pair of these beauty's in black off of SAC and would wear them every day if I could! These pants are super comfy and have plenty of pockets to pack your essentials in. These are great pants for the fall but tend to be too warm for the summer months.
Thanks Guys. I did go with the excalibur ones and I have to say I really dig these pants. I mainly use them for climbing, but they're also great for hiking, travel, and just hanging around town.
While I don't have a picture I could give you a slightly colorblind guy's opinion. I would say they are a dark brown to an olive color. I asked the old lady and she went with an olive as well. Definitely a good color choice. I got the denim(read BRIGHT blue) as well. They are so comfy you don't care what color they are.
I'll start with the cons: -I assume other reviewers' comments are accurate regarding the belt loops needing to be thinner/smaller etc for heavy pack wear. That said, I haven't had any issues with smaller day packs. -That's really it for negative. I'm 6'2" and about 31" waist. I think the medium fits perfectly. Nor do I mind the extra space in the articulated knees.
The biggest spec I want to highlight is the stretchiness. These pants are very stretchy! I don't know why, but I was expecting less give. Pair this with the fleeced interior and these pants are comfortable. Minor benefits: -The fleece comforting warmth, but it's not over kill. They're definitely 3 season pants (no chance for me in summer, I'm pretty warm blooded). I've used them with lightweight merino bottoms and that's about as hot as I need until I start doing some long summit attempts or it gets below 0F; considering inconsistent, moderate activity. -Water resistant. Haven't experienced any torrential downpours, but plenty of pacific northwest drizzle. Dry as a bone so far.
I'm a 35-36 waist in every pant under the sun. The large claims to be for waists 36.4-39.6in. If your waist falls anywhere within this range the large pant will not fit especially if you ever plan to tuck in a shirt. If you are the tall skinny type you will have better luck with this pant. If you have any meat on your bones you will want to size up. Hopefully, the XL will not be too long for me.I was surprised at how heavy these pants felt. They do not feel light and airy and instead seemed rather restrictive. The "stretch' is more movement related and not a stretch "fit".
I have a pair of Stoic Overhang Shorts in size medium. The waist
I have a pair of Stoic Overhang Shorts in size medium. The waist fits ok. Do the Stoic Overhang Pants fit the same way in the waist? What is the inseam?
I got these off SAC where I saw one other review complaining about fit. I'm 6'0", 155lbs, and a reliable 32. These pants fit me perfectly. I really like the cut, they make me feel like a million bucks when I walk around in them, especially when I crouch or sit down: the articulated knees work great. They're not baggy, which I hate, but they're not restricting either. You feel them on your legs (can't tell if it's the feel of the fabric or the cut really), but because of the stretch and the cut it doesn't feel bad at all.
I was worried they would look too technical, but they don't. They're not shiny, and they don't make too much of that swishing noise you get with some pants. Also the cargo pocket is pretty low key.
I've only worn them a couple times in moderate weather, but they seem perfect for all year wear, except maybe in heat.
If they perform great in heat and in rain/snow/etc then they'll be my favorite pants, and would be worth full price. Otherwise it's a solid buy at the SAC price.
UPDATE Summer 2011: It's been a great year since getting these pants. They've taken me to the top of Mt. Kilimanjaro, and they were my only pair of long pants (except for rain pants) for 2 months of travel through China, Tibet, and Nepal, including 10 days of trekking to Annapurna Base Camp. They have performed incredibly well, from the heat and humidity of the low altitude parts of the Nepalese trekking, to the well below freezing temps at the summit of Kilimanjaro. The zippered back and hip pockets really helped my peace of mind while travelling. They layered great over Patagonia Cap2 pants and under my Marmot Oracle rain pants, mostly 2 layers at a time, but I wore all 3 layers for summit day on Kilimanjaro. As I said, they were my only pair of pants for 2 months, and I wore them every single day in China, as weather was poor most of the time. They didn't smell, dirt and mud came of easily, they dried quickly, and they were durable. And I wore them around town without getting weird looks for wearing grimy mountaineering gear.
Definitely my go-to outdoors pant, for any weather in any season.
I ordered the overhang pant off of SAC and got an awesome pair of pants to go hiking/climbing in (on bluebird days). The primary reason I ordered them was because they claimed to be water resistant. Within the first couple minutes of the first drizzle the new pants saw my legs were wet. I would like to point out that these are the most comfy pants I own. I wear them around the house in place of sweat pants sometimes and cherish them on bright days in the forest. If you want a great pair of pants that are much more flexible than you will ever be, you should jump all over these. If you want something that will keep the dew off your shins on morning romps through tall grass, you should keep looking...
Let's just say that you wake up on the floor after a night of partying and wonder where your pants are....that is, until you look down and see that you're still wearing pants. Strange. You must not have noticed because they're so lightweight, breathable and just downright "hit-the-town-again-tonight-because-your-pants-are-awesome" comfortable. Not only that, but running from the Polizia during your next trip to Cabo will be considerably easier, since these pants feature an athletic cut with knees that are cut for movement.
Con: They don't shed water after 6 hrs. in the rain. But hey, I don't either.
6' 180 lbs w/ a 33"-34" waist. I went with the large. The waist is an inch/inch and a half too big. The rest of the pants fit great. If the waist was more true to size, I'd give it 5 stars because they're comfy, breathable, and hold up to the elements (from a blizzard in 20 degree weather to a downpour at 60 degrees). I was out fishing with these on in a constant downpour for 4 hours and only had damp thighs and shins. Had I used some nikwax on them, I probably would've been completely dry.
Ordered a Medium (32.4-35.6") and could barely get the things on, very tight in the waist, seat and upper thigh. I am usually between a 32 and 34 in most brands and my waist/hips measure in at exactly 34". Backcountry/SAC was helpful as always and sent me a Large. The waist was way too big, the seat too baggy, and the crotch too low.
Bottom Line: If you can find a size that fits you, these pants should be awesome, but I had to return both pairs because they were cut so strangely.

I am 31 to 32in waist in jeans, khakis, dress pants, etc, and the M fits me perfectly. If I wore 34in jeans, etc, they would be falling off me. if I was a 34in waist in other pants and got the M, I feel like they would be way too tight with both buttons snapped.
I would agree that unless you are spot-on with the sizing, it may be tough luck. Your observations above seem to fit perfectly with what I would suspect, fit wise.
overall these are good pants. I've used them a few times for backpacking and functionally they are great. But like almost all Stoic products they fit weird. Tight around the ankle and baggy around the waist. I wish I didn't need to wear a belt at all times with them but I'll keep them anyway. Stoic, I like your gear but quit designing everything for mutant bodyshapes!
Stoic will have my business for a long time if they keep putting out pants like these. I got the overhang on a killer sale from backcountry. I'm a stocky, weird shaped guy so I'm always leery of buying pants online. I usually wear a 34/32 so I ordered the medium based on the sizing chart. My order got mixed up with another when I got it in the mail, so I called the ever-so-helpful guys at backcountry and they got everything straightened out. I mentioned to the guy on the phone my size and he recommended I go up a size to a large. Man, I'm happy I did. They were super comfortable right out of the box. The only issue was the length...a little long for my short, stocky legs. I didn't find any cinches, but I did find that they held a cuff like a champ. I wore them for my 15+ hours of travel from FL to Alaska and the cuff never fell! The fit is perfect...a nice little stretch where I need it and gives plenty of room for the boys. The extra button on the top of the zipper is nice when the belt was forgotten. I went on backcountry hikes through Denali for hours on end. My friend, wearing far less quality pants, was a bloody mess at the end of the hike. I, on the other hand, didn't have a scratch on me. Nice and cool during a long, hot hike. Warm at night...couldn't ask for more.
Is the "Denim" color true to the stock images? It seems everyone is getting the grey ones, and I'd kinda like to know if that's because the denim is as obnoxiously vibrant blue as it appears on the site. : )
I love my stoic overhangs, there the most comfortable pair of pants I own, for everything from general chilling to trad climbing to being thrown in lakes. The new colors are disappointing though, I wish stoic would move away from the black/tan/brown trend and back to the killer colors of the past (I'm looking at you shale/graze and denim).
Due to the current warmth (read hotter'n hell) here lately I'll have to wait until fall before I give these pants a real trial at the local crags.
I've tried 'em on and they feel comfortable and as if the material will hold up well. The sizing is a little bigger than I'd like, but I also didn't want to chance getting them too small as some of the other reviewers have. Since they'll mainly be crag pants there'll just be a little extra room for that high step.
These are my favorite pants now. I love how stretchy they are, while still being thick enough to block the wind, but breath well in the warmer temps too. I've also found that they are very wrinkle proof, so you can use them traveling as a cool casual pant too.
I use these for primarily alpine and ice climbing, but they also double as a great all around hiking pant. Layer them up with some long underwear and you have an affordable pair of softshell pants. Unfortunately they aren't lined or seam sealed so they do tend to soak through which could make for unpleasant days in the mountains. On the bright side they do dry extremely fast, and even on days for the ice is running with water these things dry out pretty quick.
I bought these for hang-gliding, looking for something that would keep me warm and dry during set-up on those dewy mornings, but that wouldn't kill me when the sun came out.
I took them out today and they came through in spades. It warmed my heart to see the water beading up, and they even survived a rough landing dragged across the ground! One of my friends brought his doberman, and when the dog jumped, his claws made a tearing sound across my leg. "No-o-o-o-o," I thought in slow motion, but never fear, pants were fine!
Mushed them around in the NikWax TechWash and some hot water, rinsed x3 as per instructions, and all mud and grass came off. No scrubbing needed. They look like new. Perfect.
These are the first pants I've ever bought that didn't
These are the first pants I've ever bought that didn't come with washing instructions. Obviously they're washable, but some softshell stuff specifies powdered detergent only, while other softshells (like the Rab Treklite pants, for instance) say use only liquid detergent. Since the choice of detergents may affect how well they remain water resistant, I'd like to know how to wash 'em. Thanks.
Wash/Care instructions are located on a white tyvek-paper label sewn inside the left leg outseam (5" down from waist).
Here are the official care instructions from Stoic:
"For optimum performance frequent washing required. After securing all zippers and closures, machine or hand-wash your softshell garment with Nikwax Tech Wash. After washing, use Nikwax Softshell Proof to improve water-repellency. Tumble dry on low heat or hang dry."
No bleach, no iron, no dry-clean.
Unofficially, I throw mine in with my normal dark wash load. Use the Nikwax to restore fabric performance as needed.
The Overhang pant is one nice pair of pants! The fabric is very stretchy, very soft, and the articulated knees let them move with your body as you hike and climb. Very comfortable pant.
In terms of warmth, I've lately been wearing them out for my morning dog walk in temps around 25-30 and am totally fine (the fabric is pretty thick, and the inside seems like it has some fuzzy insulation on it, but nothing dramatic).
They're on the slim side, but I suppose you could layer with some long-johns if you needed to (I haven't).
They loose a star for two reasons: First, they're cut a little low in the waste (that's the style, but I like my pants at my waste). Second, they're a bit too short for my legs. I bought a medium, and I'm a 33x34 in jeans. These are more like a 34x33. I can still wear them up in the mountains where I live, but I don't like to wear them into town because I look like the dork I really am.
All-in-all, I'm happy with my purchase, but wish they were 1-2 inches longer...
I ordered the Overhang in size L. I have a 36 waist and about
I ordered the Overhang in size L. I have a 36 waist and about a 31 inseam, so I realize the L will be a little long. That's OK, but is the size L waist going to be too large for me?
Rode my 4 wheeler now I've got two holes in the pant leg. My leggings underneath were completely unscathed. Now I know, they dont clame to be fire resistant or anything, but "anything"? Just making it known that they melt pretty st all I did was go down the road n back to a friends. Other than that and the fact my new $130 pants are torched they are really nice. I wear them almost everyday since I received em. So other than the heat problem they get a 9 out of 10 from me.

Good overall pants. Waterproof and durable although they do run a little big. I'm 5'8" 140 a 30x30 waist and the medium was too big for me. I have a small on the way so hopefully that works better. Good pocket placement although I wish the side pockets had zips as well.
Got a pair, then just ordered a second pair in excaliber. All I can say is these are great - not to heavy, not to light. Stretchy, and now I can thrown out my Levi's. Very comfortable and my new outdoor go to pant.
Got these for a treat off of SAC. Not sure what's up with colors- who picked the 1980s ski bum theme? :P Fabric is a stretch woven softshell, no membrane and no polyfleece backing as described. For me, that's a good thing. Have to send them back, though-the fit is weird. I wear a XL for FA Mountain Guide Lite Pants and can wear an XL or XXL for Arc'teryx Gamma LT. I'd really be a 1.5 XL for the Gamma LTs, in a perfect world. Got the Overhangs in XL, but I think I'd need XXL or XXXL (!!!) - they've a trim cut in a weird way. It's less like they made an athletic cut and more like they just downsized it a size and called it good.
If you get these, size up- the sizing chart lists the XL as 40.8-43.6". These Overhangs in XL are closer to 37".
The fabric is nice, and the features are nice. Despite the undersizing, the cut seems more appropriate for snowboarding than hiking and climbing.
Bought on Steep and Cheap. They have a very high rise, like the waist wants to be way up your torso. That puts the knee articulations too high. If you wear the waist where it should be, the knee articulations are correct, but the crotch hangs way down. I've never had pants fit so poorly.
I am working in a mine in Nevada ,I am outside 12 hour shifts
I am working in a mine in Nevada ,I am outside 12 hour shifts -1--25 below zero and wet ,does anyone know how this pants would hold up in extreme cold and wet weather thank you Rp
It's wet but unlikely there will be much liquid water when it is -25 below zero. You may need a good insulation underwear and a tough pant, may be some heavy weight cotton or nyco (Codura if possible) ones with DWR to shed ice, snow and mud.
they won't keep you warm nor dry after 12 hours. You need waterproof and probably a good synthetic insulation. It also depends on how stationary you are. Additionally if it is -1 to -25 out, are you working with water being pumped up or down otherwise it would seem it is all frozen, thus--you may not even need waterproof pants but wear some thermals (light-medium-or heavy weight) under a solid windproof/softshell pant with or without insulation depending on how heavy of a fleece/thermal long underwear you got.
Additionally if you are not just standing around but actually working heavy duty and liable to have your clothes get beat up with tons of dirt, rock, sharp corners of metal, etc., don't even bother forking up $300 for some primo pants--if you are doing that kind of work it will probably tear them up quick, just get some good long underwear and something for ~$100 to last you a few months. you don't want to be worrying about some expensive super pants getting holes and rips when you gotta be working.
i took these pants to the gunks in the middle of November, i am glad i had them.they kept my legs cool and dry while climbing and warm while sitting at the belay station (the temps where in the 40's F). the winds where whipping that weekend and these pants have the ability to block the gusts. excellent abrasion resistance. there where a lot of scraps that would have compromised the fabric of a lesser pan but the overhang pants survived without a scratch. i have never been disappointed with stoic and after seeing these pants in action i am a true believer.
...they're not quite as described. The description says these have "polyester fleece lining bonded inside for warmth" which is not the case! (See pic) Seems like the Stoic Tour ones are meant for the winter and would probably have that though... Kinda disappointed in that. Fortunately that means I can just layer with them and maybe get an extra month on each side of winter usage out of them...
Also the Excalibur/Vintage is waaay more purple than I thought. It looks mostly grey in the pics, but they're definitely purple.
The excalibur/shale is really a grey, not at all purple in my opinion. I was concerned of the color right after I ordered after seeing your post, so I emailed support - the girl said definately not purple and I would agree. Maybe you got a bad sample.
I have a pair from last year. Same fabric as yours- stretch woven, non-membrane softshell. Definitely not membrane with polyfleece backing as described.
Got these for climbing the spring and used them all summer for climbing and backpacking up in WI and absolutely oved them, they are durable and have a great fit I got a medium and I usually wear a 33" waist and a 34" inseam and they fit just perfect but i don't think they would fight al the way to a 35" waist like the chart says. The water repellent treatment has a good life between treatments and they look great.
i am looking for a hiking/camping pant that is loose fit, not
i am looking for a hiking/camping pant that is loose fit, not regular or athletic as most are. are these overhang pants actually a loose fit, like loose fit jeans? any other brands/styles that are more of a loose fit?
I really want to add- while they're not baggy, they do have the articulated knees, and I was shocked how stretchy they are. If you want the baggy look that's one thing but if it's a matter of comfort then I wouldn't worry about needing baggy. Just get the pants they're really comfortable. I'm a huge fan. I'm about to do a review now that I've worn them.
I have these pants but the version that was still made under the Backcountry.com brand. These are not "loose", but not tight either. I find them to be really comfortable. I'd recommend them as long as the slightly tighter fit doesn't bother you that much.
It seems as though the sizing on Stoic is a bit off for me. From past experience, I always end up having to order one size up from what the sizing chart recommends. I'm 150lbs at 5'8" with a 30 waist. The Medium ended up fitting me perfectly.
The pants are very durable. Great buy, they are flexible and easy to move around in. No hang ups.
I received these today and was excited to put them on and try them out. I put them on, buttoned one of the no sew buttons and...it broke. The material looks and feels great, but the manufacture seems suspect. Rather than spend the money to return these I am going to replace the button and give them a try. I will re-evaluate at that point.
I got the size med, I am 5'11" 150 lbs, these fit perfect. material feels solid, fit is great for a skinnier guy like me, stoked to have these pants for the coming season! Just wish they came yesterday when we got 16" of snow, would of worn them all day
My comments are mostly about fit because I haven't put them to much use. I wear a size 30 or 31 and the Small fits well in the waist. I wouldn't mind an extra half-inch to an inch in length, but I'm 5-10 and most people wearing a Small are probably shorter than I. The fabric is lightweight and stretchy but seems tough. I have to admit that my main activity is running, for which these would be of no use, so I don't know how much action they'll get, but they will be good to have for the occasional camping trip or any outdoor work. Should be a fine pair of travel pants. I spend a lot of time working at a desk and they'll actually be great for that, too. Believe it or not, articulated knees are good for desk work as well as bouldering. They look a little baggy for everyday wear, but I don't mind that. The brown color is nice and rich although the bright green zippers and accents wouldn't have been my first choice. I'm happy to have light, stretchy, comfortable pants to wear all day.
From when you first put them on you can tell they were meant for action. The fit around areas like your knee and and anywhere else that requires movement is relaxed so that it moves with and not against you. The soft-shell is breathable but definitely holds in some warmth, and the fit is pretty nice. Many people say that it is tight or too small, but I would say only size up if you are on the border of a size. I am a 6'2'' 190lb guy. I bought the large in fears that the medium would be too small, but I am confident I would easily fit into a medium, because there is definitely room to spare in the large. I can't wait to get to really test these out skiing and hiking instead of just in an urban environment.
Great pants and I concur that the fit is slim. My only complaint goes to the colors: I sent a "SHALE" pair back as I don't have use for purple pants. "SHALE" in this case is really "grape." It looks like they spilled red wine on a lighter fabric and called it good. I am waiting to get some Stoic stuff in normal colors...Hey BC any chance of regular black?
these are the same pant design, different material. the new material is a little heavier, but will breathe well and hold up to a summer full of trail time, climbing, or adventures.
Not the same pant First of all I must say the Backcountry.com Overhang pant is AWESOME. The only downfall has been the micro-fleece lining has pilled off in high friction areas.
Thus after much waiting and hoping that another run of the overhang would come out, stoic released theirs. I grabbed the first pair I could buy, and while I have not tested them outside, I assume they will perform at a similar level as the bc.com overhang. That said, I would like to detail the differences for anyone who may be wondering:
Size Medium: stoic overhang: Everest Softshell (just an inhouse name of powershield?), no micro-fleece, 94% nylon, 6% spandex, 7 belt loops, zipper pulls are tied cord, 18.8oz. Thicker, Heavier, Less Stretch.
bc.com overhang: polartec powershield with hardface technology, micro-fleece lining, 92% nylon, 8% spandex, 5 belt loops, zipper pulls are sewed loops of webbing, 14.2oz. Thinner, Softer, Stretchier.
Fit is otherwise the same. I'm ~32x32inch sizing in jeans, khakis, dress pants. M fits perfect at waist w/ both buttons snapped. w/ both buttons snapped, S would seem tight.
Shale is kinda a dark purple/brown color, nice though. Got these on the SAC and would recommend if they fit your body type but i'm going to illuminate the less than perfect side of the Overhang Pants on a tall person.
I'm 6' 3" with a 34" waist. The fact that they come in only 4 size ranges is the reason for the low ratings in my opinion, just too many shapes and sizes of people out there for s -xl. The Larges fit in overall length and were about a true 36 waist. The rise is too long making your lower thigh work to stretch the fabric every time you lift it to, say climb a mountain. Pre-articulated knees cause fabric to stick to the entire front of your shin all the way up your leg when standing straight up (looks like your facing into the wind...indoors). Also my long knees get caught in the depression made by the knee, if you are my height and like resistance training theses are your pants. - Nice face on the fabric, no doubt these are performers but like other Stoic stuff just not quite there yet for us perfectionists. Ended up returning them after 30 minutes of debate between me and the mirror. 3 stars for fabric feel, the off-chance you're of stoic shape (and the envy of many) and for Stoics success of other technical design aspects. Anyone else feel like Stoic is in Beta testing??
These are my new outdoor pants of choice. Super stretchy and comfortable, very breathable, pretty water resistant; small amounts of water bead and roll off (haven't had them in heavy rain yet). Lots of roomy pockets, which is always a plus, and the cargo pocket is pretty low key as far as cargo pockets go.
I'm 5'11, 160, a 31x32 pant. The medium fits great, I could wear it without a belt, but it would be a bit loose so I usually use a belt anyway. The knees are a bit unnecessarily loose. I wish the pants had the cut of the tour pants instead, they're stretchy enough that a less-roomy knee would be fine. Aside from that small complaint they're a great midweight softshell pant!
These are great pants. Light enough to take out in hot weather, warm enough to handle spring and fall hiking. They have good stretch and enough pockets for me.
My issues is that i'm a short big guy. these are at least 2 inches too long for me and there is no cinch cord at the foot like there are on my other hiking pants. My hope for the future is stoic rolls that out or rolls out short (and maybe long for the tall guys) inseams
but beyond that length issue, quite happy with these
I will start by saying I have a pair of Mountain Hardwear Winter Wander pant and I love them. I got the overhang for Christmas and have used them throughout the winter and took them camping this past weekend. The have perform great. The large fits me well (36x32) is what I usually wear and these were spot on. The length is long, but I like it. The length kept snow, dirt and anything else out of my shoes or boots. I would recommend these pants highly.
I have purchased a fair amount of gear from backcountry/SAC and this pair of Stoic Overhang pants prompted me to post my first review. I own a pair of Backcountry.com overhang pants that I got in '09 and I have put them through the wringer. They have held up very well and do not seem close to retirement yet. They have only sustained one pencil lead diameter hole barely detectable on one upper leg (perhaps it was made by a pencil.) This new Stoic version seems to have the same cut and fit, but the fabric is slightly heavier and a bit stretchier. I suspect they will be even more durable and comfortable. Water seems to shed nicely off the surface. I am 6'2" and 225lbs and the XL's are right with some room to spare. These might end of being the last pants I ever need to buy. I'll let you know how it goes.
Solid pants for hiking, climbing, whatever. They size on the small side of the sizing chart above. High quality materials, water resistant, scratch/tear resistant. Gusseted crotch is good, makes for easier range of motion.
First impression is it is heavier and more rugged than the previous version. I owned a pair before and it was a little softer and lighter. Unfortunately it didn't survive the abuses of my crampons and I had to get a pair of Marmot Scree. Comparing to the Scree, it is definitely not as nice. The threading are not trimmed and i can see several thread ends hanging on my new pants. If I pull on them, the threads might come off, so I just trimmed them with a scissor and hope for the best. The material is on the heavier side. It seems to be more rugged than the Scree, but not sure about the breath-ability. The reason I get this is because the sizing of the Scree sucks. I usually wear a 31/30 and the small size fits me well. Although a little tight on the waist, but it does offer a spacer button. I really don't like the fact that it didn't have a zipper at the bottom of the legs like the Scree, so I can expand them and put them over my huge mountaineering boots. All in all, a nice pair of pants for 70. For 130, there are other choices out there.
Man I keep wanting to like Stoic. I like the quality of the items but the sizing seems like it's made for short skinny folks. Started with a jacket that was way to tight in the forearms. These pants are really nice but they are to short and fairly tight in the thighs if you have athletic ones like myself. I am just under 5'10 usually wear a 34 waist or less and 32 inseam and got a medium. Will have to return
true to fit, water resistant, and they look good. These are great pants and very comfortable and durable. I wouldn't change a thing. They are perfect for traveling.
Loved these pants! Comfortable, breathable, water beads nicely off of them, and STRETCHY. The drawback is the 2 buttons at the waist pop requring me to always wear a belt.
Great pant. Have taken they snow shoeing and ice fishing and so far they are perfect. Have had them in snow flurries and it shrugs them off. Very little to no insulation, which makes then a perfect shell. I wear a 34-36 and a large was the right fit. The baggy knees are of minor consequence when you factor in the over all functionality of the pant, especially if you get them on SAC. So far i really like BC's Stoic gear. Will give it 5 stars when I see they last.
I've used these climbing in the summer, hiking anytime, and snowshoeing just yesterday. i have yet to find an activity that these don't do well at. They shed light moisture and snow even while snowshoeing for four hours in deep snow. They have enough stretch that they're great for climbing, its me not my pant that limits those high steps. Also they're very durable thus far. Great all around
best 3 season outdoor pants i own. the waist sizing is a bit on the snug side, but other than that these are as comfy as it gets. they are also incredibly durable despite the soft shell stretchyness. i have hiked, climbed, swam, slept, etc. in these bad boys and couldn't have been happier with them. They are a little pricey, but if you can find them on sale or on steepncheap then they are well worth the price. too bad they discontinued the overhang short! i would have been all over them.
Nice pants, but sizing is way off. Normally, 32" pants swallow me. I ordered a small (29.6-32.4in), and I couldn't close them, closer to a 28". And, they say it's a "loose" fit.
thicker than pantagonia borderless pants but doesn't feel warmer in hot conditions, good stretch, same pluses as the short which I really love. it would have been nice to be able to fold the pant to make it a capri or something.
These are the best softshell pants. The material is great, and is definitely DWR although I will have to see how it holds up after a season of use. The fit is great and they do not have "boob" knees like another reviewer described. I take a 33" waist by 34" length and the medium is perfect.
Suggestions for Stoic: - put cargo pockets on either side, not just one - position the cargo pockets straight up and down so that stuff rides in them better. Stop designing "unique" junk to look cool, but doesn't work as well - thinner material in belt loops so that when you have a heavy pack pressing in, the weight is evenly distributed and not pointing in sharply around the belt loops (especially important on multi-day excursions)
so i'm glad stoic has kept it reputation as being legit and amazing and stellar. fur real, these pants are nice. i'm six 2 and 155, the mediums fit quite nicely indeed.
good quality, nice fit. Size: I am 5'11" and 157, usually wears Levis 32*32. Size Medium fits me perfectly. I can still put a base layer under. Waist is 2 fingers smaller than stoic tour pants (size medium). Function: comfy is the fist impression. Knee design is good (not as baggy as stoic tour). pockets are nicely placed. Fabric is light but very windproof. Price: MSRP is little pricey IMO. But I got it from SAC at only $41.
Although I'm not sure that I would pay the full $130 price (I picked up a pair on SAC), these pants are fantastic. The first day I got them, I went for an 8-mile hike where it was cold and very windy - the pants held up great, and were rather resistant to the wind. They are a fairly light fabric though, so I was a bit chilly (granted, it was around freezing on top of the mountain). Also, the sizing seems much more normal than the rest of the stoic gear. The only real complaint is that the knees are a bit baggy and as such, my feet tend to catch in the knee area when I'm putting the pants on. But that's nothing I can't deal with.So yea, these pants rock. Maybe not $130 worth of rock, but definitely $50 worth of rock.
I just picked these pants up. They're super comfortable but I wasn't sure about the fit so I ordered a Large. I have a 34 waist and 34 inseam in everything. Sometimes 34 is a tad big and sometimes a tad small but if I stray from that it never fits. The large is fairly baggy in the leg but the inseam fits great. I'm afraid if I went with medium the pant legs would be too short as is usually the case for me.
I'm ok with a little baggy except on windy days I tend to kick the pant with my crampons and put holes in them. If the legs were tightened up a bit they would be better but I think for what I was able to get them for and the job they'll be doing they should work just fine
I love these pants. They are super cozy. The softshell material is awesome because any liquid literally beads up and rolls off. Don't worry about getting caught in a storm, or spilling your coke on yourself.
Yup, these pants are awesome. I love these just as much as I love the shorts. Probably won't be able to wear them much this summer but I look forward to wearing them non stop when the weather cools down.
I almost returned these when i saw how baggy the knee area was. It is probably marginally easier to bend my knee as a result, but I'd prefer pants that I could wear to the bar after hiking/climbing/etc without being embarrassed by the boobs on my knees.
I really wish that BC had stuck with the goat logo on these pants. I think the goat and BC are way cooler than the new stoic brand they're pushing. All that said, these pants seem really breathable, have nice pockets, easy zippers, and sit nicely in a climbing harness or under a backpack waist belt. They'll be great for outdoor activities where I'm more concerned about functionality than looks.

I like how your dog is just hanging out in the exact same spot in both pictures.
