When I first put on the mediums I ordered (I'm 5'11", 160lbs) I was excited - they fit well (I'm 5'11", 160lbs), and I had read the reviews about how well they hold up. Well let's just say it's a good thing I didn't get too excited, because when I got around to checking them out in the mirror I could clearly see the outline of my penis (I can say that on BC, right?). I thought about keeping them for a few more minutes, but decided I'd ultimately get tired of rocking that look. For the designers at Stoic, I recommend to you this video: http://www.comedycentral.com/videos/index.jhtml?videoId=240904&title=richard-hugger-pants
It's disturbing how accurate this review is. I saw it before I ordered and though maybe it was overblown. Boy was I wrong. I tried the grey and it was super comfortable with great range of motion, but the crotch issue is ridiculous (that's kind of a pun). It's almost like the damn pants highlight detail with shading because of how much closely they cling too... maybe a darker color would offset this somewhat? The medium was the right length but obscene and the large was simply too long at 5'9" 170. Guys, fix this goofy problem in next seasons model and you'll have a great pair of pants. Maybe just adding a fly or a backing "modesty" panel in the underwear area would address it?
WARNING: These pants pill like 90's cheap fleece. After I hiked for two days with these pants they were full of pills. Very disappointing. I question their long term durability.
I got to test these for a week in alpine environment. They breathe well in the 90's and kept me warm down to 30's. They kept the chilly wind out when I walked along the mountain crest. They feel light and comfortable. Their elasticity allows great range of movement.
Water repellency is weak. Waterfall mist and very light rain rolls off, but rain goes right through them. Maybe spray on DWR would help, but stock they are disappointing. My patagonia slopestyle hoodie, which isn't even a softshell kept my dry longer in rain.
These Pants are sick.... Cut is perfect for me...im 5'11" and 170 lbs. slender built and 32 waist and medium is perfect. the material is at par or ,even better i think, than Marmots M3...what your waiting for...click ADD TO CART lol Highly Recommended
I recently ordered the Stoic Bertol Guide Softshell Pants in
I recently ordered the Stoic Bertol Guide Softshell Pants in small and I found them tight on my 32 waist, 150LBs. Do these have a similar fit? I guess I should get a medium?
I ordered the Medium and they worked out well. I am 150LBs, 32. I would compare their fit to Arc'teryx and Marmot. Basically a size up from what brands mortals wear.
For some reason the belt is seems to sit above the pants, but I don't really mind it.
This is a pretty good pair of softshell pants, especially for the price. I have used these in the Tatras, the Eastern Alps, the Fagaras Mountains, and in Arizona. They are nice and comfy, and have a thinner fit on the lower leg which stops them from being baggy. The belt could use a little work because it comes loose every hour and I have to tighten it again.
- Started pilling after normal usage for about a month. Makes me question about the durability - Not water resistant (Got completely soaked in the rain within 5 minutes) - belt comes loose - one pocket... why?.... - I feel like the fabric can easily be punctured by keys or pens in the pocket
The Good: - stretchy! Grrrrrreat for climbing (I boulder) - breathable - love the fit, sort of slim fit (i'm 5'8, 140, 28 waist = small) - comfortable - love the bark red color
I use the shell pants for paddling/hiking/camping and they have held up very well. I camp out in very cold weather at times. I hear some complaints about the being bagging, but I find with my very small frame 5'9 150 that they are the most comfortable pants I own. One pocket is perfect when paddling. I don't need pockets in the rear. Easy care using nikwax. comfort, easy drying, no worry when you get soaked.
Amazing pants. I usually am not a pants type of guy for hiking but I saw these reviewed in Backpacker magazine and thought I would give them a try, and fell in love with them. They stretch really well and fit well too. If you can get these babies on sale go for them. I love them and they feel great in the warm summer sun or evening hike around the mountains.
These pants are weird. They only have one pocket which is on the right front thigh. I was totally not expecting that but that's my own fault for not reading the product description carefully. I got the large at first, and the waist was a bit too big so they fit horribly. The included strap belt pretty much sucks, so unless the waist fits you perfectly these pants are not going to be that great. Fortunately, I ordered a medium off SAC the other day and it fits like a glove. It definitely "hugs the boys" a lot like other reviewers have mentioned, but I don't really mind that. Everyone knows what men have down there, I don't see why its a big deal. I still wish they had more pockets, but for 50 bucks these things are kickass. They are super comfortable and stretchy, and a joy to hike in. The waterproof-ness is very impressive. In summary: awesome, if they fit you right. I'm impressed by the quality. There were absolutely no loose threads or imperfections on arrival. I've used them hiking about 5 or 6 times and so far I'm also impressed with the durability. They seem very resistant to tearing, even by thorns.
Hello, I am kind of a small guy and have a 30 waist. I buy all
Hello, I am kind of a small guy and have a 30 waist. I buy all my climbing/hiking shorts in small. I really like the look of these pants and they only have mediums. So do you think the belt would tighten up enough around my waist?
I'm 5'9.5 & 185 lbs. Let me start off by saying I never take points off for fit, but these are ridiculous. The large were to tight in the hip (think commpression). I exchanged for XL, and they were entirely to big. If you tighten up the belt a little ,because of the design, you get extreme prune waist. I could roll up the bottom 6-7in and they would still touch the ground. They only have ONE pocket(PERIOD) that barely fit my iphone with an otterbox. They are very well made. I realy wanted these to work, but with only the one pocket and the fit issues I could not reccomend these pants. I returned them and I'm going for the Marmot Scree pant.
It seems from the questions here that there is a lot of interest in how these things fit and specifically, differences between the Microlith and the Overhang. I have both and I would say the Microlith fits one size smaller than the Overhang. I have a Med Overhang and a large Micro. Both have a close athletic fit - very nice. I am 5'11 180 with a 31" waist (musclehead...V-shape). The Micro's pull-on and have a belt: very simple and the fabric is great. The Micro is a lightweight/hot weather item whereas the Overhang is a medium weight - good for blustery days. The Overhang belt loops are excellent. The Micro's are great for running in addition to whatever else. Both are unlined. Hope this helps.
Just to give you guys a heads up, the specs on these pants are wrong about the pockets. It does not have 2 front, nor 2 back. It has only one pocket - on the right leg like in the picture.
I was pretty disappointed after being pretty excited to receive these pants today. I'm still debating whether or not I can find a way to get by with just that pocket. I was really hoping to get some multi-use out of these pants: outdoor excursions + around town / on campus. But the one pocket is so small it'll probably just fit a wallet; which leaves me holding my keys and phone all day long. So much for that idea...
On the lack of pockets... as a climber, I really don't mind. Heaven forbid I leave something in my pocket (like my folding knife) that could become dislodged during a climb and harm my gear or--even worse--my belay. I'm all for crossover fashion for backcountry-to-office days; it's trendy and not having to buy extra pants saves money. But everything I need will fit in a small pocket or in my backpack.
I have these pants coming in any day now. We'll see if I encounter the same problems.
your are correct, there is only one pocket perfect for your stash, and a little bit of cash, and ur keys, but they seem to fit well, just got them in the mail, will review once ive given them a try
I have now used these pants for some time, and found out that they have nearly everything you need in a softshell pant. Pros: - Extremely water repellent, more than I expected - Windtight, perfect for long hiking trips with various weather - Versatile, good for hiking, climbing, running, and just for those lazy days walking around in the house Cons: - Not the most lightweight pants - Only one pocket, and it's not that big either - Belt strap is unusable, if you thighten it, it will just loosen up after a couple of minutes, very poor

In short: exchange L for XL, or return? 6'2", 220 lbs, 36" waist, 33" inseam.
I love the Overhang size XL that I picked up a while back, but when I ordered these I didn't have the Overhangs handy and couldn't remember my size, so I ordered a size L by the sizing chart. No I remember that the size L Overhangs were way too snug around my 36" waist, which is why I exchanged them for the XL. The Microlith L showed up today, and they actually fit great, except that the crotch is way too snug, as some reviews have stated. I'm wondering if exchanging for the XL would give a more relaxed fit in the crotch, even if it means I'll have to cinch the belt down a little more. Or can I expect the fit to relax after a dozen or two wearings? Or are these just cut with a more "athletic" fit that I'm not really digging?
cgi100555817 - Stoic Microlith Pant are designed with a more athletic cut. One reason for this cut is to allow them to be layered under shell pants without interfering with fit of the shell.
I would not count on the fit changing much on these pants after a little use. The Microlith softshell consists of nearly 10% spandex which helps maintain consistent power/stretch through the life of the pant.
Only have wore them a handful of times so far, but I really like them. Super comfortable and appear very durable. HEADS UP: They are a pull on with no zipper, snap, or button. Just a built in belt. I was a little surprised by that, but am kind of liking it. I'm a 32 waist and 33 length and the mediums fit me perfect.
Word of warning,. . if you you have any rear end at all, or are not comfortable with the aforementioned Richard Hugger link. . look elsewhere. I am 6'3, 210, 36" waist, 34" inseam, ordered a size Large. Length of these is great, so is the material, range of movement, . . but, I think I could only use these hiking alone or under a shell, because I don't care to show off my junk to those I am out with. After shimmying myself into them, and checking them out in a mirror. .despite the comfort and range of motion, they have to go back.
I'm not the size/shape that backcountry typically builds
I'm not the size/shape that backcountry typically builds for. Should I avoid these pants as a 5'11 190, 36X31? I'm concerned that the L will have too tight of a waist and that the XL will be crazy long.
I'd avoid these pants based on your stated measurements. If you're not looking specifically for softshell, then look into Trew Gear pants or bibs based on your size.
I'm 6'5", 215, I got an xl and these pants are plenty long without ever stepping on them with your heel. Love the stretchy feel as they move easily with your body. My new favorite lounge pants when I get home from work. Perfect on the trail too, I always keep a small camera handy, and with the pocket on the thigh it keeps it within reach to take a pic of that bear that you startled before it is out of sight. I'm not a jogger, but could see these worn on a colder morning in the woods. Light weight with great strength, strong enough to repel those low branches without snagging or tearing them. Not ideal for the town only because there is only one pocket, unless you have a man purse to cary your wallet keys and phone.
These are some great pants overall. I am 5'8 and 140lbs. I use them mostly for nordic skiing and the warmth and range of movement are great. They are not insulated, but it took some adjustment to my previous dress code as these hold there own without needing a baselayer/long johns down to the low/mid 20's. As already mentioned, the belt needs some help. I found the fit to be very good, but the legs are a little long, then again I am a little short.
Not sure if the length will work for you. My mediums measured exactly 32" on the inseam. A large should also be a 32" inseam but may have a longer outseam to add length, but it will have a very baggy waist. You can always oeder a pair try it on and if it doesnt work send them back with BC's excellent return policy (just keep the tags on)
When I got these I immediately went climbing to try them out. Full range of motion is completely uninhibited and the fabric feels like it will stand up to quite a bit of abuse. I was really impressed by how free my movement felt. I got a medium and the sizing is good for me (6'2", 185lb, 32" waist). If your waist is larger than that, you might want to go with a large (although the material is stretchy enough to accommodate a few more inches).
The only reason I gave the pants 4 stars is the lack of pockets and fly. The one zip pocket is not enough to carry my wallet and cell phone, which is annoying. Also, the built in belt is kind of cheaply made and will easily loosen up when you don't want it to (the magnetic assisted clasp on the belt it cool, though).
Overall, they're a good pair of pants for the price if you get them discounted on S&C. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them to someone else.
I've disagree, I have both, and as others have said, these are cut kinda tight in the crotch. Strangely, they are actually a little looser in the thigh and waist than the Overhang, but the crotch really shows a bulge, and it's not like I'm above average or anything. I've got XL in the overhang because the L was a little too tight for my 36" waist, but the L Microliths fit very well (other than the crotch).
These are great pants. I'm glad I read the other reviews though. Based on the size chart I thought a medium would be perfect, I'm 6' 190 lbs and usually wear 36 jeans with room to spare. After reading that they ran a little small though I ordered the large, and sure enough they fit perfect. They still are snug in the waist and have a nice slim fit overall which I like. Not tight at all, just not baggy.
And they are so comfortable! Super light, soft, and insanely stretchy. They have the best mobility of any pant I've ever worn.
I am 6'0 200lbs ( very athletic and fit haha) ordered a large and these pants fit me perfect. The waist is adjustable with a nice built in belt you can tighten or loosen significantly. It is true they only have one pocket on the right hip that is very small it fits my money clip with cards etc. This pant is ideal for climbing and hiking if you do not need to throw things in your pockets. Hope this helps!
Stoic Overhang pant or Softshell Pant? I am planning a trip to
Stoic Overhang pant or Softshell Pant? I am planning a trip to do Mt. Moran next week and I have a pair of the overhang pants but I worry they are too warm for this time of year. I have been told that there is still snow above 8,000ft. and our camp is at 8,200ft I think.
Have had these for a while now and I love them. I'm 5'11, 175 pounds, 34 waist and the large size are a little bit long/ and about as baggy through the 'seat'/ legs as a pair of jeans. I bought these to wear over a base layer, so I wanted the extra room, but I suspect a medium would work fine. When worn with hiking boots the extra length isn't a problem.
Took them out today for a long Appalachian hike in 20F temps with a windchill that must have been closer to 10. I had these over capilene 3 tights and my legs were nice and toasty warm at a brisk walking pace. I never felt the wind and it was blowing really hard at times.
My only gripe is that the lining tends to pick up leaves and burrs around the bottom of the legs. This is partly due to the extra length on mine, but the brushed lining (which is very comfy) sorta acts like velcro. This isn't a huge deal, but Stoic could fix it by doubling over the outer facing fabric at the bottom about 3 inches on future models.
It seems as though the sizing on Stoic is a bit off for me. From past experience, I always end up having to order one size up from what the sizing chart recommends. I'm 150lbs at 5'8" with a 30 waist. The Medium ended up fitting me perfectly.
The pants are very durable. The water-resistant is surprising. I was not expecting the performance out of a softshell. Great buy, they are flexible and easy to move around in. No hang ups.
How is the durability? will these pants hold up walking through
How is the durability? will these pants hold up walking through thick brush intermingled with briars & thorny vegatation? I need a pant that is durable but also keeps you dry and won't overheat...
This is exactly what you're looking for. They're very breathable and very durable. They're not completely waterproof, and it's certainly possible to work hard enough to get a sweat going in there, but for most things they'll be great.
I'm not going to put these to much rough outdoor use. I just like softshell pants because they're so comfortable. I usually wear a Small (5-10, 135) and I find that these fit great. There's a good amount of stretch in the waist for getting them on and bending over; the stretch throughout is nice for movement. As for the crotch hugging too tightly and being too revealing, I don't have that problem, but I guess that doesn't say much for my natural endowment. Like others, I wish there were a fly and more than one modestly sized pocket. I don't understand the running pants approach. If you're only going to wear pants for an hour or so, a fly or pockets can be skipped. But if you're going to wear them for hours, whether on an outdoor adventure or simply for daily activities, then a fly and (ideally) more or larger pockets would be good. All in all, though, I think they're really comfortable. Made of a slightly lighter weight (with more spandex) than the Overhang pant, and the Shale color is slightly different, presumably because of how the fabric took the dye.
I have had these pants for a couple months now and can now post a fair review of them. They have kind of a funky look to them because they taper down to the ankles. I don't know if I would wear them out and about, but the functionality of the pants is worth it. I have used them climbing and they don't restrict your movement at all. They have a stretchy feel and give a lot so they will never get in your way. I have also hiked numerous times in them and they have worked well for me. Weather has ranged from 85-50 and they have been great in both extremes. The tapered fit may look weird, but they fit perfectly around the top of my boots which makes for a great fit. I ran into rain twice while hiking and it kept the rain out for a little bit, but it eventually seeped through the material so i would agree with the water-resistant rating. The single pocket was hard getting used to. I didn't like it to much at first because I like to carry wallet, keys, phone and such in the pocket, but I guess for weight sake, its okay. I wear a 33-34 waist and have a 33-34 inseam and the large fits perfectly.
Hey everybody,
Can anyone comment on the fit of these pants
Hey everybody,
Can anyone comment on the fit of these pants (are they tight in the legs? etc)? I'm a 31" waist, 31" inseam and i'm wondering whether to go with the small or medium.
I'm a member of the US Ski Jumping team and i took these pants on my last trip over seas, and i gotta say i pretty much wore them for 2 weeks straight. The stretchable fabric was perfect for training in, and the adjustable belt buckle is a great substitution for a belt.
These pants are a great compliment to the light weight pullover, and the stoic rain jacket. Perfect for the cooler summer and fall conditions, and very comfortable. I love them for just about anything, training, and even just hanging out.
The Microlith Softshell Pant does not have a cinch cord at the ankle. The 16.5" circumference (size medium) ankle opening was specifically designed to create a tight seal when stretched over a ski boot, but not be too big/floppy for other aerobic activities not requiring a boot.
I've been wearing these pants fairly consistently for about 2 months now. They are the most comfortable pants in my outdoor wardrobe and significantly more comfortable than other softshell pants I have worn. The interior fabric is super soft and comfortable and these pants stretch and fit great. The fabric is definitely water resistant and works well in light rain and the pants are wind resistant and great for windy days.
2 biggest flaws that I have found: -There is only 1 awkward pocket so it's tough to carry the items I like to have on hand (knife, chapstick, camera, etc) or keep my hands in my pockets. -Some of the stitching is coming loose and parts of the fabric are starting to pill after only half a season of wear.
Overall, these are great softshell pants (especially if you can find them on sale). Recommended.
the microlith pant is lighter than the overhang. about 20% lighter due to lighter material, and no front or rear pockets. welded thigh pocket, and a built in web belt.
I really wanted to like these pants. The material is great (although a little too warm for the summer). The design is great but the cut is really odd. They are very tight in the waist area with no fly, and the give the boys a nice hug down there (the reviewer below says it all). Also the legs are a little tight (kinda of a skinny jeans look). these would work well under a shell as a mid layer but not my style for an outer layer. Lastly It could use a second pocket. Too bad these are going back
I like these pants more and more as I wear them, for outdoor use only... The material is great, and the fit is sport but not super slim... I have been using them as a replacement to a pair of pants I pack during backpacking, so now its these and a pair of zip-offs... They are holding up well, with minimal pilling of the inside material... The "one" pocket is great for outdoor use (minimal), sucks for wearing around town... The colors shown here are spot on, I have black and grey... The sizing is spot on, which doesn't seem to be the standard MO for Stoic products, but I am a 36-38 waist in my normal clothes and the large was perfect... Though there is one thing I really hate about these, they have no fly or button closure waist... Maybe they should be put into a Unisex category?
Given the apparent lack of a fly, ankle zips/shock cord, and 4 or 5 hand warmer pockets, I'd say the weight difference has little to do with fabric weight, ie, they would be very comparable in terms of warmth and whatnot.
No problem! I was wondering what the weight on these were too. You might also check out the rab treklite softshell pants (http://www.backcountry.com/rab-treklite-soft-shell-pant-mens), or the mountain hardware chockstone pants (http://www.backcountry.com/mountain-hardwear-chockstone-pant-mens). Both are on sale right now too. I have to chockstone jacket and it is very abrasion resistant, and very, very thin. Not much in the warmth department. Good luck!
I just got off of the live chat, and was told that these pants weigh: "0.82 lbs, about 13 oz." I just thought I would share. As for comparison to the scree, the scree pants weigh 17oz (http://marmot.com/products/scree_pant) with more pockets, so it would seem the microlith pants are a bit thinner and not as warm.
My first impressions of these pants were pretty bleak. They were SO lightweight, sleek, and comfortable that I was convinced they wouldn't survive a week of my high-flying to crash-and-burn lifestyle. I was so ashamed to own them that I even changed out of them before grabbing a coffee with a climbing buddy.
This is the part where you ask, "So, why 4 stars?"
I went hiking in the rain and fog, slipped and crashed on wet limestone, bushwacked in 80 Fahrenheit on a lengthy approach, stuck it out on an exposed ridge in 25 mile per hour winds, worked the moves on a super-grippy granite boulder traverse... and the Microliths are unscathed, and I'm in much better shape because of it. My temperature was well-regulated, my skin free of cuts and abrasions or moisture, and my legs free to move into whatever hellish position I could find (including the splits, par accident). In short, I'm amazed with how well these pants have performed so far, and look forward to testing them further these coming seasons.
So i got these in the mail way earlier than expected (thats always a plus). The fabric on these pants are wicked, and slick. As i was reading reviews they are correct, there is only one pocket, which is the welded pocket ( i could fit my fist). I got a small, and they fit perfectly, they are fitted for the athletic look so if your on the larger side maybe go a little bigger, but the sizing chart is accurate. I havent tested them outside yet, but i will put them to the test.
