Amazing, this bad Boy just came in the mail 4-5 days ago and I have not taken it off. Still a little scratchy in my opinion but because of the Merino wool it still smells fresh as a Daisy. After several washes these r transformed to being soft as silk and very warm. I want to give a great review because this piece of gear deserves it but at the same time I want to make sure I can get every color in my size before they are gone. Dog.com has great service, lightning fast shipping, bar none the best Return policy around and for the price these r a steal, thank you!
I'm always looking to expand my merino collection and I've seen these every once in a while, so I decided to give it a shot. I was looking for a medium but small was all that was left. I decided to go with the small hoping they'd workout. I'm 6' 168 and this guy fits perfect! Length is perfect, nothing is to short or too tight with a fitted feel. I didn't want anything baggy for base layer use vs lounging in. Mission accomplished! Fits great and feels great! Will probably get another.
Warm, smooth and comfortable. Well made, 2 negatives: No butt flap and the thumb holes on the sleeves. Not fond of either, and the wife and I are working on a way to fix both problems. Cut and re-hem the sleeves pretty simple, butt flap will take some reengineering but for the price on sale, hard to pass up the deal.
At the price backcountry is blowing these out for, this is a no brainier. Just got my large suit the other day, and it is amazing. I am 6'0 180 and the large is a good fit. Even for friends who are 5'9 and up, as long as you have 165 pounds on you or so a large will fit finewithout being too baggy. Just use the sinch in the middle and tie up the waste nice and snug. Loved my suit so much I just ordered another in a different color. Anyone who knows anything about merino wool knows 50 dollars will normally buy you a short sleeve shirt, not AN AMAZING BASELAYER SUIT. At first based on other reviews I was worried when there wasn't a medium size left, but am glad that was the case and I got a large, very comfortable, and a steal at the price. Can't wait to take it to the mountain this winter!
Feel like a tellytubby when I wear this on it's own but when I wear it as a base layer it works so well you feel indestructible. Great feel, well crafted and super protection from the cold.
I wear this for any winter activity. It is the perfect base layer for skiing, snowshoeing, etc. No snow gets in your pants, its comfy, light, breathable, and doesnt smell. I've also worn it around the house in the evenings and its quite comfy for that as well.
Wow! I put this suit on in November and haven't taken it off since! Well, okay, not literally, but this suit is perfect for so many things: lounging around the house; braving the cold and wet in a winter trip to the store; Snowshoeing up the side of your favorite mountain; lounging around the campfire; etc. It's merino so the funk factor is not an issue and it breathes so well as it insulates. The only negative is lack of a #2 hole. Not a big deal.
As with others, my only complaint especially for backcountry is, no crap-flap. All in all, the most comfortable "farmer Johns" i've ever owned. Big for sizing, so if your a "tweener", go smaller....its an under layer after all and plenty of room, unless of course you shrink everything in the wash!
"Farmer Johns" refers to older hand me downs from Grandpa, wool...itchy...long sleeve...worn out butt long johns. Nothing to do with the sleeveless rafting "Johns"!
I'm 6 feet and maybe a quarter inch... I fit a medium in
I'm 6 feet and maybe a quarter inch... I fit a medium in stoic pretty well do you think this would be tall enough for me? any more detailed measurements available for this... I'm thinking crotch to shoulder length would be a good one.
The same measurement in small as well would be helpful... I do like something more form fitting, would it shrink a bit if you ran it through a warm/hot run of laundry?
It looks like it's got a nice high collar... is that measurement from the top or base of the collar?
Stoic almost hit it out of the park with this one. The suit itself is awesome. Great construction, warmth, comfort, everything you could ask for as far as the way the suit functions. The only drawback, and what lost a 5-star rating from me, is the lack of a buttflap. It's true that it's generally not THAT big of a problem but, for the cost it wouldn't have been that hard to put one on there. i actually cut my own flap and sewed velcro on which has really made it fantastic. if you go that route, just make sure to sew the velcro high enough up that you're not sitting directly on it when you're sitting down.
sizing: i'm about 6'2" and 165-170 and the large fits me great. at first i thought it was too baggy but once i cinched up the waist strap it fits great.
This is definitely the best thing since sliced bread! i now have probably 10 to 12 days in this thing, still haven't washed it, and it still doesn't smell. 'Nough said. Oh yeah, it's crazy warm too. a full day skiing 8-14 degree temps in just the 1z, a t shirt, and shell jacket and pants and there were only a couple moments on a couple lift rides where i kind of wished i had another layer on but definitely didn't have to. seriously, this thing is epic! yeah, no number two flap, but unless you're truly out in the backcountry where you can't find a restroom, i haven't found it to be much of a big deal. i'm 5'10" 150# and the small fits really well. sorry to anyone shorter than 5'8" though, i doubt this will work for you.

Does this suit have any access for bathroom breaks other than the fly in the front? I cannot see a zipper in the back...how to go on a toilet break without undressing completely?
Its worth a few extra bucks to get a Ninja Suit from the originators of this product. Like anything else, the people who invented this design usually have the best product. Check out the Airblaster Ninja Suit, with the butt zip. http://www.backcountry.com/airblaster-merino-wool-ninja-suit-mens
Dave is right. This suit is not equipped to handle access for a quick #2. For a few bucks more i would hit up the original. Check out the Airblaster Ninja Suit. It has a zipper that will open up almost 90% of the suit to make for a pretty easy toilet break. A much improvement over their old zip system. This new system zips around the waist instead of under the crotch. Check out the Merino Ninja Suit here on Backcountry.com. Be sure to consider the exclusive Backcountry.com color BC Navy.
Definitely a nice item, but the sizing is just wrong. I'm 5'10 and skinny (145#), so I got a small, and it fits me like a garbage bag in the waist. Strangely enough, the problem seems to be height more so than girth: this would fit somebody like 6'1 and 155-160# snugly, or 5'10 and 175#, perhaps. I would not consider that to be a "small" person, and there's no smaller size.
One-piece suits are a size problem waiting to happen, but it sucks that there's nothing out there made to fit the less heavy among us.
A shame, as the material and design is otherwise perfect. Arm length is good, etc. The material is great, as with all Stoic merino stuff, and I like the long zipper and thumb loops.
try the Airblaster Ninja Suit http://www.backcountry.com/airblaster-merino-wool-ninja-suit-mens This is the original one-piece long underwear, they've been doing this product for 6 years or more now. It has the key feature of the waist zip, so you can go #2 easily without stripping off all your upper body layers to get down to your skivvies. They make a merino version, and they make Men's XS. T hat would be your size if you want it snug.
This has been my go to underlayer all winter long.... Its perfect, keeps the snow out, super warm, and you can't beat merino! If you are going to get any underlayer this is the one! Unfortunately no #2 hole, but you just have to do your bizness before you hit the hill!!!
So happy to finally see a Stoic 1 piece Merino underlayer. Let me start by saying that merino is by far the best material for an underlayer and with the 1Z option comfort and freedom are now only a few clicks away. I got mine about a week ago and have spent about 75 percent of my time in it so far. Also makes a great lounge-around-the house suit. The one downside is the absence of the # 2 bathroom zipper. Just remember to relieve yourself before your shred sesh!!!
Where's the bum-flap?!?! If you're out in the backcountry your going to want to plan ahead with this suit. Got caught out on the hill and had to do the world's most awkward maneuvering to do my business. Once that little hang-up is out of the way, this is the greatest baselayer I have ever allowed to touch my skin. Merino, yes. Full front zip, yes. Thumb loops, yes. And the waist string didn't bother me at all with my pack hip-belt. I think I might just go put it on for the heck of it right now.
