Pretty good

By:
August 11, 2010

This is a pretty good entry level synthetic puffy. Great for around town and as a stationary layer climbing or skiing. Within a few weeks of getting mine, there were a bunch of loose threads and although it has been a problem over the last 6 months or so, I'd be concerned about the durability in the long run. The fit is a little weird. I usually wear mediums in most stuff but needed a large in this. I'm 175 and 6'3. Good jacket and great value, but overall, if you'd spend a little more, there are some better products out there, IMHO.

The Truth behind Luft Hoody

By:
April 2, 2010

felt a 1/2size smaller then all other stoic jackets( event bombshell ) also the threading on this jackets is loose and some polyester is coming out in between the seems.. i got a size bigger normally wear size L, so when XL came i returned both of them coz it didn't look good anymore, all loose and bum looking
here is my calculation from 5 star
-1 for size too small
-1 for loose threading
-1 for polyester coming out in less then 2 weeks
-1 for design but it could be just me being picky i'll do .5 star bring it up to 2star total for this jacket to be nice about it.

Just giving a heads up to everyone who doesn't mind used gear... There's several of these bad boys on geartrade.com. (it's where backcountry sends their returns and etc) super cheap and I've seen several of these for like $45. They're great coats and you'll probably be able to find one there for SUPER cheap.

Great quality, bizarre cut

By:
December 22, 2009

This is my... 5th or 6th product from Stoic. I've got the Bombshell Jacket, the Welder Hi Softshell, the Wool Hoody, a pair of softshell pants, and I think one or two other pieces. Every single one is amazing. This.... not so much.

The quality and finish are impeccable, but the cut is bizarre. I wear a Large in every Stoic product I have. I'm 6'2, 180 lbs, but quite lean. All the above Stoic products fit perfectly. However, 10 years of climbing has left me with very large forearms and shoulders/back, and the Luft Hoody simply doesn't fit.

It has such tight sleeves that I can barely get my forearms through. If I were wearing anything other than a microweight long sleeve T shirt, it would be too uncomfortable to wear. Also, it is sufficiently tight on the chest and shoulders/upper back that it restricts my range of motion. I couldn't ice climb in this without fear of ripping the internal baffles.

It's a beautiful jacket, super lightweight, highly compressible, cooks you dinner, and even will call you the next morning after you drunkenly bring it home from the bar, and feeling vulnerable and lonely, you make a bad decision - you just can't wear it while it does all those amazing things. This jacket is being returned.

great comments.. you are right this luft fits tight.... we have revised our fit chart to help customers... but if you are like mrhutt, large is for you in softshells, and shells, and pants, XL will fit similar in this luft hoody.

I'm 6'2" and 165 lbs, I'm not sure if should go for a medium or a large. I know it's an athletic cut, and i usually don't wear clothes too baggy but I want to be able to ski in it.

I have other Stoic gear, and IMHO there's no way a Medium will fit someone who is 6'2". I'm 5'10" and medium is just slightly long on me. Go L.

Nice jacket, wierd sizing

By:
July 14, 2010

I'm 5'8, 135 lbs, with a 37" chest and a pretty athletic build. I usually wear a small, but after reading some comments here, I sized up to a medium. The arm length was generous, the belly area felt about right if not a bit baggy, but the chest and shoulder areas were snug. With just a t-shirt underneath it was tight across the shoulders to the point of limiting movement and making me worry about ripping the jacket. It would be impossible for me to wear a fleece underneath. I feel like a large would work for my shoulders but would be too big everywhere else.

The workmanship seems to be great and the jacket is reasonably warm, quite light and very compressible. If it fits you, this would be a great jacket. It didn't fit me, so I returned it and will try a different brand.

Lofty Lufty

By:
June 28, 2010

When I'm backcounrty skiing I stay warm with light layers on the way up but as soon as I stop I begin cooling down quickly. The Luft Hoody is perfect for these stops.

It lives in the top of my pack where I can grab it when we check the map, have a snack, or have any other excuse to pause our slogging. I pull it over whatever I'm wearing and having an insulated hood means that I dont have to dig for a warm hat, just pull it over my ballcap. I'm 5'9", 170lb and usually wear size medium but by sizing up to a large means that it fits comfortably over other layers. When we're ready to go, I stuff the jacket back into my pack, where it easily compresses.

For this type of use, having a synthetic jacket is a huge advantage over a down sweater: if it's snowing, I have to be careful to keep my ultra-non-waterproof down jacket dry but if this Hoody gets a little damp, no worries, it still retains its insulating properties.

As other reviewers have mentioned, it's fragile layer. I don't get the impression it'd withstand many laps of, say, tree skiing or off-width climbing but that's not what I bought it for anyway. After a couple months of use I noticed stray threads on both forearms where the quilted stitching had snagged and was beginning to unravel. A drop of SeamGrip on each of those loose threads has stopped them from unraveling more and it's been smooth sailing since.

The Luft Hoodie is ideal if you're looking for an insulated layer to use in damp environments; it's an efficient jacket for quick layering and unlayering and makes a good 3-season belay parka.

I'd recommend you the medium. If you use it for touring, the extension of the arms requires a little larger size than usual, and consider that you wear midlayer underneath.

Hurray!

By:
January 12, 2010

As soon as i read "small chest, monkey arms" I bought it. I'm a gangly ape man (6'4, 175), and it (L) fits perfect. It packs down tiny, has a nice big hood (nice for tall folks, i can put it on without it pulling up the back) and is really very warm. I wore it on new years eve, when we had to take a little boat out to an island to get our drink on. It was the windiest, wettest, coldest choppiest, scariest party pre-funk in history. People were puking, some were crying, gear and beer alike were bouncing out of the boat. Probably the most fun i had all year. I wore this hoody underneath a gortex shell, and was the only warm one when we made it to the island. I love the wrist gator thingies. I dig it.

Is the hood designed to fit over a helmet? If it doesn't

Is the hood designed to fit over a helmet? If it doesn't then that would probably be annoying to wear this jacket as a layer under a shell and put the shell's hood on but not be able to put on this product's hood. It might even render the helmet sized hood on the shell useless.

I just tried the hood on over my helmet, (older Boeri, pretty low profile, about 4 years old) and it fit just fine. If you have a larger helmet, it might be a bit tight, but should work...

Good Layer

By:
January 29, 2010

This is a good thin layer for laying up on those cold days. I use it under my Stoic shell and on those cold cold windy days on Little Cloud it keeps me pretty warm. On the other hand it's too warm to wear in the tram like that.

One thing I'd add is velcro straps to the cuffs.

Stoic Luft Hoody Insulated

By:
February 3, 2010

I bought the non-hooded version first, then the hoody came up on SAC after a week with the non-hooded. I am 6'2, around 170, and I got the medium. It is snug, but I like it that way. I wore it out one night over just a t-shirt and we got the biggest snowstorm in DC history. I was not toasty warm, but with the hood pulled tight and the zipper all the way up I was comfortable on the long walk to find a taxi. For deeper cold, a good baselayer (old school Patagonia is my fave) underneath and a good shell (backcountry.com welder) over the top make for a perfect combo.
However, I had some quality control issues with the first one, and had to return it. The material is not very abrasion resistant at all - I would definitely recommend a strong shell over it for more serious backcountry expeditions.

This jacket does have a weird cut. The torso could be sewn in a bit more. I also wish the durability was a little bit higher. I wore it two days skiing and the threads are coming a bit undone. Other than that a killer jacket. It keeps you pretty warm for how thin it is.

By:
January 2, 2010

As others have said this jacket has an odd cut - very long arms and very small chest. Not much insulation, would be an adequate light layer on a freezing or just below day, not much more. Ok quality, nothing special. Not really impressed.

Body is a bit bulky, very light insulation

By:
January 9, 2010

The quality was good, but the fit was less than desirable. I am 6'3 and weigh 195--the body was too big (size L), I would have had to take it in at least an inch on each side to get the fit I desire. I would say this jacket is too light to serve as a belay jacket below 40 deg ambient. The positives: the arms were cut long enough for my size and the hood was very well designed.

Good jacket

By:
December 21, 2009

This jacket is light yet very warm with the synthetic insulation. I am 5'6", 160lbs, and a 39" chest and I ordered the large. I agree the sizing is a tad on the smaller size, on me the jacket is quite snug and becomes tight across the back with forward arm movement, I doubt I could layer much under this jacket because then it would be too tight. It seems to be ok quality, but I do agree with another poster who stated that the stitching on the outside of the jacket does not appear to be very durable...I wonder how it will hold up over time. Overall not a bad buy for the price on SAC but would definitely NOT pay the original price on bc.com

Why is BC so off in their sizing?? I'd expect they could

Why is BC so off in their sizing?? I'd expect they could at least do us the favour of providing a sizing chart specific to the item. Obviously the Large doesn't fit as per the chart.....shipping/back/forth get's pricey for us Canucks let alone the hassle. Please measure them up and provide a new correct chart (same for stoic welders/Event etc)...seems silly to now help us make this more pleasant....

I'm with you HappyGilmore- there's a consistent sizing issue with a bunch of the new Stoic stuff, and its been running small. Having to go with the XL makes me feel kinda fat, not to mention that shipping issue.

Maybe it's a a result of different sourcing: some of the stuff is coming from Canada, and some is coming from China...

Perhaps your question was meant to be rhetorical, but since I disagree with its assumption I feel like "answering" it. I'm 6'1" 185 and the Large of the Stoic Down fit me fine as well as the BC Siphon Street hoody. Sizing on the ladies side fit the BC shirts fine for my wife as well in her expected size. If my comment is misplaced because somehow these other products are sized correctly and just the Luft is way off base then I apologize, but I'm finding that hard to believe.

December 17, 2009

The chest is small, and the arms are huge. Last time I've measured my chest it was 38.8, at the small end of the size chart for a Medium, but it's snug around my chest. Yet the arms are long and baggy. I'm 5'9", 140lbs, and the medium works for me, but only barely.

Pretty nice...but, yeah, runs small!

By:
December 16, 2009

Nice jacket so far. I'm 5'9", 175, and I tried the version without the hood initially, in a Large, and it was really snug.

Sent it back, and picked up an XL with the hood. Overall it fits much better, however its still tight across my back.

And, I'm not sure this jacket will fit real well over all my other layers, say, at the top of a skin when I stop for a bite to eat and I pull out my down/synthetic jacket to keep from freezin. I know this is a "sweater" but I'm gonna give it a try on my next tour. We'll see.

The drawstrings are pretty thin. Almost an after thought.

Finally, it would be nice to have an internal "stuff-sack" type of pocket, or a little stuff sack included.

Still, I'm psyched on the jacket!!

Dustman, you're a bozo... this isn't a down jacket! It's a synthetic fill material called Cirrus.

The difference between the down Luft jacket and this one is primarily that; the DOWN Luft is filled with DOWN, this one is filled with synthetic insulation. Down, compared to an appropriately equal weight of synthetic insulation, will generally insulate better and be warmer due to its superior lofting capability. That being said, down absolutely can NOT get wet - if it does, it completely loses its loft and provides no insulation. Synthetic insulation will not lost its loft even when soaking wet, so it is still able to insulate. A down jacket that is equally as warm as a particular synthetic jacket will generally be lighter and pack down much smaller; down also compresses much more easily than synthetic insulations.

Considering these factors... the general rule of thumb would be to choose down if you're typically in the bitter cold when it's totally dry (or have a shell ready to throw over your jacket at all times), or if you want a light-as-possible jacket. Choose synthetic insulation if you're typically exposed to mix conditions, including bouts of rain/sleet/snow off and on. Or, just buy one down jacket and one synthetic jacket if you have a seriously bad gear problem like me :)

STOIC LUFT HOODY INSULATED SWEATER

I am 5ft 10in tall and about 175lbs. I didn't think I was fat but I had to size up to the xl in this Jacket. The L was a little snug around the shoulders and the arm length was a tiny bit short. The xl fits perfect.

Looks great, Feels better

By:
March 4, 2010

Taking in what others said about sizing, I purchased a L for my 6'2" 175 frame instead of my usual M; it was a good call. The jacket fits well, if snugly at elbows, over Midwt baselayer and 100wt fleece. The hood is large and fits over my Petzl Elios. There is plenty of length to cover my longer torso, my lower back is not exposed when bending at the waist.

Attention to detail like warm microfleece lined pockets, a drawstring adjustable hood and retroreflective emblazoning on the draft guard make this jacket a keeper. I also like the slippery "down" feel of the insulation (reminiscent of Ultralamina) and lycra wrist gaiters.

A great deal at the current discounted price (40% off)

Awesome cold weather layer

By:
February 9, 2010

So apparently I'am weird or have some freakishly normal body cause this thing fits perfectly on me. I'am 6'2" 190lbs. and an athletic body style, type, cut whatever you want to call it. I bought the XL and think this is probably the best purchase I have made this winter as I never had a puffy layer before to shove in my pack for when it gets cold. So I took an avalanche class where we were standing around a snowpit talking and learning in a snow storm and started getting the shivers. I finally broke down and took my shell off briefly to put this on underneath and within a minute I was noticeably warmer and the perfect temp. for the rest of the day. I wouldn't hike with it on because it would be too warm but as a cold layer it's perfect for me.

I also like the fact that the hood fits over my helmet and I didn't notice any bunching or anything weird when it was under my shell. My only complaint or improvement would be to give it some pit zips.

Dont Bother This thing SUCKS

By:
March 24, 2010

Stoic is a pretty expensive clothing brand for a pretty average quality of clothing. I bought this because it has decent reviews, but when it arrived, I was not all that excited about it. The only reason it has good reviews is because it has a following. Not worth the money at all, and am not a fan to say the least. This is just a shell at best, it can be worn without anything else on a not so cold day, but there are a LOT better jackets for the job and the price. The Stoic Luft Hoody runs VERY small with too long of sleeves, It might be a good idea to size up by 1. The material seems very week and if it was snagged on anything, I have NO doubt it would rip. The jackets only real benefit is that it is very very light, however it is not worth the $107 that backcountry is asking, and especially not the $180 that Stoic asks for it. Shop around, get a jacket worth your money, adequate for your life style.
