Regardless what the weather decides to do, you'll be wise to have to Stoic Men’s Breathe 90 T-Shirt on your back or in your pack. This technical T-shirt comes with a super-light polyester-nylon blend that floats over your skin on ascents on warm, sunny days ascents and provides a primary layer of insulation when the temperature drops. Stoic’s 3-D ergonomic fit frees you up to move, and the anti-microbial treatment fends off the funk so you don't clear out the bar post-hike.
So, OpinionatedGeek says he's 5'9" and 165 with a 42" chest and the shirt is too big in the chest. That seems weird to me, because I'm 5'9" and 150 lbs with a mere 38" chest (practically a wisp of a man) and the medium fits me perfectly. It's on the skin in the chest, but not tight, the sleeves go down about 3/4 of the way to my elbow like OG said, and the hem is low enough that it doesn't ride up when biking (bent over) or climbing (arms up).
Fit aside, this is my new favorite shirt. It wicks like you would not believe, even if you were predisposed to credulity in the realm of fabric properties. I ride three miles to school and back every day, and had resigned myself to the idea that my lower back would be sweaty afterwards. No shirt will keep save me from moistness, I grieved, but then! STAND BACK, said the Breathe 90, I GOT THIS. The design on the front, though nearly irrelevant, is really awesome-looking if you like things that look awesome, and it would be equally at home on the crag or at the (obviously) trendy microbrewery you frequent. Also it's light enough that you'd forget you were wearing it if it weren't for people seeing how cool you look and trying to make out with you all the time. They're like COME HERE YOUR SHIRT IS IRRESISTIBLE and you're like PLEASE TAKE YOUR FACE OFF OF MY FACE, I HAVE AN APPOINTMENT.
And let's be honest, that's not really a downside. The only thing I can think of is that 50 bucks is a bit steep for a shirt, but that's what Steep and Cheap is for. Or a steady paycheck.
Great shirt! I bought it on sale and i must say, while a very nice shirt, i wouldnt pay full price for it because it is soo thin. Im 6'0'', 200lbs, very athletic build and because its so thin i feel chubby wearing it. Also, when i run around in the woods i worry i will tear it up.
Shirt fit is very athletic, as described, and the material wicks moisture and repels your stench. That said, I wouldn't buy this shirt at full price. Ridiculous. On SAC, though, get a bunch of these whenever you see them. Absolutely worth it.
I'm 6'5" tall and 205lbs and this shirt in Large fits well. It's snug but not tight so not alot of extra fabric to bunch when I layer it which is nice. It's light enough that I can wear it under a cycling jersey when I ride if I need just a touch more insulation on a cool ride. Great shirt for warm day activities. Dries quickly. Good stuff.
THis is quickly becoming my favorite shirt. It feels Like you're wearing nothing at all. It's super stretchy and looks good. Great for climbing or backpacking in the summer
The Large in the Stoic merino t-shirts fits me pratically like a second skin, so I ordered a large in this shirt, but it is too big. The sleeves fit ok; semi-fitted and long (3/4 way to the elbow!), but the chest of the shirt is too large (bagging at armpit area). I would probably keep it if this was going to be my outer shirt but I figure it will often be my only layer or undershirt.
I'm exchanging it for a medium because the shirt is super light and comfortable. Hopefully that fits better. For reference I'm 5'9" 165lbs, 42" chest. Beware hairy chested dudes - this is so thin you can see the hairs poking out!
the merino are designed as a layering piece, so are more fitted. the breathe 90 tech tee are designed primarily to be worn as tee, on the trail, on the bike, on the gym. the breath 90 fit is more relaxed. even in the looser fit, it is a really comfortable layering piece. silk weight - very light, very comfortable.
I know I'm going against the grain here (+52 reviews avg 5 star rating), but for those who like the best...trust me, there is better.
So I received this shirt in the mail today. It's just OK. I saw these guys were on sale for 19 bucks during the memorial day sale and thought of picking up one then, but ended up ordering a ton of other stuff so I didnt. Well I decided to pull the trigger a few days ago during the free 2-day shipping. I must say I'm not impressed. I do like the color black. It actually is much more of a dark grey than a black. It also fits fairly well-but not perfect. The neck is tight, and the arms are just a little long. Not long enough to look funny, but longer than other shirts.
The biggest thing that surprises me is the shirt retails for $49. If you happen to be one of the unlucky people who orders this shirt when it's not on sale...well...I don't even know what to say. All I know is I paid $26 for mine and still found it only so-so. I have only bought one other stoic brand item (stoic Vamp 30 sleeping bag) and thought it was AWESOME! This tshirt, not so much. For the half the price The North Face Velocitee does the same thing (right now $13). The material is like most average polyester athletic shirts, nothing special here. At an original price of $49 from stoic, I thought I might be receiving a product with materials comparable to arc'teryx-NOPE. I am returning the shirt.
There are better fitting, nicer materials out there for not much more, or in some cases less money. Don't let the 45-55% off fool you.
this material is a complex knit of nylon the outside, polyester on this inside. at 90 grams per square meter it is lighter than most. it is incredibly soft, dries fast, and lightweight for hot climates. it does fit different - it does not have a sloppy stretched out neck, and the arm provide full bicep coverage.
i just purchased a second one of these in a different color, great shirts. i use them for trail running and they feel great and dry fast. so thin and light it feels like your not wearing anything. get one
So I have one of these shirts and I've worn it a few times while out trail running. I really like it. Very light and comfortable. Size seems to run true. I'm 5'10" 175lbs and wear a medium. Definitely would get another one.
Great performance shirt for everything from hiking to biking to climbing. It breathes fairly well and the antimicrobial finish prevents you from smelling funky every time you get a sweat going. I am 5'10 and the large fit me perfect, even though I have a longer torso.
I have bought two of these now thinking that they should get better but they didn't. The function of the shirt it's self is not that bad, but the issue is in the quality. The first shirt that I bought had snags in it coming out of the package. So i sent it back and bought another one. Same thing happened. I wore it or one day and it already had run in it all over the place... I would not recomend this shirt to any one. You can get shirts for cheaper and better quality.
the breathe 90 uses an extremely light weight material, and still uses a nylon face, and polyester inner. this light weight material is not impervious to snag, but is more durable than many other in its category. you can definitely get more durable, but will be heavy material, and hotter. i have used this shirt literally hundreds of days for trail running, fishing, camping, traveling and it still looks great. If i go out for a load of firewood however, i put on a softshell jacket - to protect my arms, and the lightweight shirt material.
I'm 5'11" 200lbs. and bought the XL. Perfect fit and very comfortable. It is extremely lightweight. I crashed my mountain bike while wearing this and there is a snag in the fabric, but you will obviously lose some durability when using a fabric as lightweight as this. I think it's a trade-off worth making as long as you're aware of that.
I love this thing. 5'11" 190 and the xl is perfect. I could run the large but didn't want a fit too under armourish. Dries super fast and breathes very well.
Just got this shirt in the mail. Thanks BC for super quick shipping!
Tried it on, let me just say that this has to be the softest and lightest performance tshirt I have ever worn. I usually buy the Nike Dri-quick performance shirts and they fit well but the quality between the two shirts are night and day in my opinion. For the sale price of $19.95, I am going to pick up a few more.
I am 175lbs, about 5'11. Medium fits to skin but not restrictive whatsoever. Perfect!
Picked this shirt up on Steep & Cheap last summer and love it. Fit is great and and the fabric does a good job of wicking away moisture. Only downside is it does tend to hold odor - bring a spare shirt if you plan on going straight from the hill to the pub...
These shirts are pretty thin, allow plenty of ventilation, and dry moisture fast. I use them for running and they are one of my favorite. I didn't give it a 5 because the material is not as durable as other more expensive shirts and they show their wear and tear sooner than it should, other than that, these shirts are great!
I've long been a fan of thin material, wicking shirts (Patagonia et al). Just got to try out this shirt on a very hot & humid 50km+ adventure run and I was pleasantly surprised how well the shirt did. In the exposed sections of the route when it was very, very sunny I still felt relatively cool in the shirt and after getting a good soaking under a waterfall or two the shirt still dried out within a mile or two. Pretty amazing coming from a guy who's used to being mistaken for the "Swamp Thing" this time of year because I sweat so much I'm constantly soaked through and through! I like the thin, stretchy material, feels great against the skin. So far so good, can't wait for my next ultra adventure, this shirt will definitely be on the top of the pile!
these shirts are great. they're super lightweight and are amazing for hot days. my soccer team is using these for our jerseys and eveyone loves them. we got our first win the first day we had these new jerseys actually. coincidence?...i think not.
i'm 6'2" and about 170 lbs. the large fits me like a dream.
I got this shirt for someone as a gift, and they love it. It's great to throw on for a hike, or even to wear to the gym. The material is awesome, and wicks great. Also, a good price for this shirt.
I bought this shirt for my boyfriend because he likes to run, hike, and mountain bike. He's always complaining about shirts not fitting him right but this one is perfect. In fact, he's asked me to get him three more! What I like the best about it is that he doesn't smell after these activities when he wears this shirt. :)
After reading Angus's review on this shirt I don't think there is much more to be said. This shirt is awesome and has a great fit, I'm 5'11" about 180 and expanding and the large fit me great with room for the future growth. GET IT.
This is my favorite running shirt. I also use it to mountain bike. Super smooth and light. I love the feel and the way it hangs. I have several of these. I am 5'11" 190 and wear a Large.
This shirt is very lightweight and breathable, great for hot days doing all sorts of activities. Also doesn't get as smelly as you would think which is a big plus!
A very nice High tech shirt. Its super light weight, very breathable, soft, and comfortable to wear. I do a bunch of training in this shirt and it does a great job wicking away sweat, yet it doesn't get as smelly as other high tech shirts do. It's an Excellent shirt for any activity.
This shirt is super versatile for athletes, whether playing soccer, lifting weights or flying thru the air this shirt rocks! Highly recommend this shirt for anyone who plans to work our and sweat.
It is lightweight, very comfortable, and well fitted. It doesn't smell too badly after wearing it twice in a row, although three is stretching it. Overall, it's a great baselayer or running shirt. My only problem is that it's really thin and your nipples will show through. Someone needs to finally make a baselayer that fixes that problem.
Im 6' 170 lbs. Got a M & L on SAC. I wear both sizes, depends on my mood / activity but find myself going for the M more often because is seems to perform better when a little closer to the skin. Guess it just depends how you want your shirt to fit but keep in mind the material is stretchy. I would also highly recommend the Stoic Merino 150 crew but i found the L in the Merino fits like a M Breath 90 shirt.
This shirt is insanely light. It's a killer summertime shirt. In XL, the Breathe 90 is nearly 2 oz lighter than Patagonia's Cap 1, which is saying a lot! Blows my mind.
The cut is great, just like the Stoic short sleeve tops. Form fitting without being tight, and flatting for a wide variety of body types. Sleeves are snug around my biceps, which I like- I hate the flapping of loose sleeves.
The Stoic Breathe 90 is above the vast majority of ultralight base layer tops in how it looks when worn alone. Even with darker colors, I can often see the colors of my nipples or the bumps of chest hair on other ultralight tops. Patagonia Cap 1 and 2 is also good in this respect, but the majority of other synth tops I've tried over the years have this problem to the point that I don't feel comfortable wearing it in public off-trail. To each their own, but it's a big plus for me.
I have three complaints, in order of importance to me:
1. The Logo Art - If I could get this shirt without the big logo and horizontal lines, I'd buy a few more. I'm not totally against logos- the Stoic logo on the lightweight merino T is just fine. 2. The Price - $10 more than Patagonia's Cap 1. Enough said. :) 3. The Collar - I've complained about this with other Stoic shirts. I'm sure they're going for distinctive, and I don't blame them. It's just not my thing, but the ugliness of the collar isn't enough to skip over an otherwise great shirt.
So, I have been using this shirt for about a week (I have two and have used & laundered both), but haven't truly put it through the paces until this morning. I did the Crossfit workout "Murph", which lasted just under an hour and let me experience the pro's and con's of the Breathe 90 material.
My recurring thought is that the material is fairly analogous to merino, but lighter. The lightness of the shirt can't be overstated. It's a "barely there" material that feels great and is really smooth. Similar to merino, it breathes well until the point of saturation, then simply "holds" moisture and becomes heavy/ceases to breathe. In fact, it became so saturated this morning that I removed the shirt until the workout was over due to the "heaviness" of the garment.
As to fit, I'm 6'5" and 200lbs and the shirt fits perfectly, slim but not formfitting. I especially like the little bit of extra length in back for when I'm riding my bike.
For me, nothing on the market can beat Patagonia's Capilene 1 material for wicking performance. I have used them in the heat and humidity of GA summers and they continually perform like a champ. The only downside is in the cost of a capilene garment. That is where the Stoic Breathe shirt kills it - if you find it on sale/SAC, it's a deal you can't pass up.
So, for the TLDR'ers out there: PROs - extremely light, great fit, price is right, works well for many different applications CONs - reaches sweat saturation fairly quickly (YMMV)
Good shirt. A wee bit delicate, but I really like it. Disappointed in the color choices, but hey. Comfy. Cool. A L Fits my 5'11" 168# frame just right.
i recently took two of stoic breathe 90 to the midwest and 90 deg 90 humidity summer. the shirts did great in the summer heat. the black is a dark gray heather from the black nylon yarns and the white polyester yarns inside, and still is cool, and the blue is a great color. wear an XL and it fits loose.
So I agree that sizing is a bit off from normal Stoic gear. I am 6' and about 180 lbs and the large fits me fairly loosely. Its maybe not as an athletic fit as other Stoic garments. It does dry extremely quick and is great for hiking or running or frolicing in the woods but it is a delicate fabric and I'd advise against putting it in the dryer or getting it anywhere near velcro. I pulled the threading loose on two of these shirts these ways. Otherwise a very effective and performance-enhanced shirt.
I am 5'10" and 170lb (pretty average right?) I would normally take a medium in this type of shirt but got it and it was too small, especially in the arms/shoulders. I took it back and got the large because I really liked the lightweight material. The large fits my shoulders but now the mid section is way too baggy. I have a 33" waist. There is about 6" extra material floating around the waist. So the shirt is not cut very well, not very athletic. More boxy.
Bought the shirt and instantly loved it. Comfortable, light, and stylish. Used the shirt to work out at the gym and washed the shirt maybe twice and threads started unraveling(predominantly in the chest/logo area) all over the place. Still plan to use the shirt, but was disappointed at the quality of the material after such light use.
I just wore this today for the first time on a hike, and it performed excellently!! It wicked away moisture like nobody's business, dries fast, and is very soft to the touch with no static cling. Enough said right? I may have to buy another...
It doesn't get all stinky, fits great and feels good. I like the color and style of the shirt as well. Don't have too many miles in the backcountry on it, but with what I have used it for, it has held up great.
Pic is after a steep uphill with my son...my Breathe shirt kept me dry.
I'm 6"5", 205lb with a ~42" chest and the large fits nice but not snug like an under armor layer. Length is good as well. I dig it. May order a few more.
Super light synthetic shirt that dries quickly and wears well. I am 6'0" 180lbs and the large fits like a loose t-shirt. I typically go with med in Stoic, but went with the large here as I wanted a looser fit for long hikes.
best t-shirt i've owned. looks good enough to go casual, breathes well enough to hike/climb/run. light, comfortable and a good fit. not cut too long which can be hard to find for 5'5" guy built like a tree stump. i love it. if you see it on SAC the price is totally unbeatable. don't think, just buy one.
I recently got this in a small, and it was too close fitting for my liking. I'm 5'9", 160lbs, 38" chest. I got the small after reading from some others that this shirt was too baggy. I should have got the medium, though I think the sleeves would still fit weird. I returned the shirt but didn't get another because I ordered the 'Silver/Denim Horizon' style and found the fabric in this color to be too shear. I can only imagine how see-through it would be when I start sweating it up! The fabric did have a nice smooth feel, as others expressed, but overall this shirt was not what I was expecting.
I like the shirt a lot for exercise it performs as advertised. My experience with Stoic is to upsize at least one size and even then after washing you might find it too small. So as long as you upsize it's a quality, breathable shirt and very light.
