Stoic Bombshell Jacket - Men's - 2009 BCS

Item # SIC0021

The undaunted Stoic Bombshell Jacket signs on for summit pushes, hut-to-hut tours, and anything between. Slightly stretchy, 3-layer Bombshell material offers shelter from ridgeline gales and whipping spin drift, while thumb-holed hand gaiters and a fully-adjustable hood ensure a complete seal from the elements. Fully-welded seams increase the Bombshell’s breathability over standard taped-seam shells and mesh-backed underarm vents banish excess body heat during long boot packs. The Stoic Bombshell’s internal pocket with headphone port begs for some musical accompaniment. Stoic’s 3-D ergonomic fit offers un-inhibited mobility without drowning you in excess fabric—if you tend to like a roomier fit, size up.

Consistent failure of Stoic Jackets

By:
December 12, 2011

"Straight up sucks" isn't even sufficient to describe how I feel about the Stoic jackets that I have purchased. I bought Stoic jacket for me and my wife, since the price was so unbelievably good. The seams came unglued on the first Stoic jacket I purchased. Backcounty.com replaced it with another. The seams came unglued on my second jacket, and my wife's jacket. Backcountry.com replaced them both. Then, on my third jacket the zipper pull broke on one of the pockets. I thought I could just live with it, my then the zipper on the main jacket failed. Of course, Backcountry.com refunded my money without any hassles at all. I have given up on Stoic gear. Winter backcountry gear that fail could be fatal. Sure, it's not as bad as a parachute or climbing gear failing. But if I am standing on top of Mt. Superior in a white-out, my outerwear needs to be reliable.
Using the Stoic name instead of the Backcountry.com name was a good idea. You don't want the Stoic brand diminishing the Backcountry.com brand and name.

Yes..more of a heavier/tougher shell that some of the lighter weight shells out there. AYOI...add your own insulation...ie base layers, fleece, synthetic/down sweater/jacket, soft shell.

Pretty Sweet Shell

By:
January 8, 2010

I bought this jacket more for touring/backcountry use, and haven't had a chance to test it out yet in that environment. However, I did ski it for 4 days at Jay Peak, and got to put it to the test in a variety of conditions.

First off, the fit is super technical. I am 5'8", 160 with a fairly athletic build. I wear a medium in almost every brand I wear, but I opted for the large, as I prefer a slightly baggier fit, and like option of layering an insulator jacket underneath on really cold days. The large was a pretty tight technical fit with a north face redpoint insulator(size medium)underneath, and was a little bit roomier with just a thermal and t-shirt underneath. Tighter than I expected, but it didn't restrict mobility. I also don't like to wear a gaiter or balaclava, so I look for jackets with a high collar and fixed hood. This jacket has that, and when zipped up all the way it offered good neck and mouth protection. However, if it wasn't for the really tight hood, I would have been able to cover my nose as well. The hood easily pulls up over your head if you are wearing just a hat. The hood is helmet compatible, but you have to unzip the jacket a little ways first, pull the hood up, and then zip the jacket all the way back up. A little bit of nuisance, but not really a big deal. I was stoked on the ninja loops/monkey holes/wrist gaiters, but wasn't able to use them, as there is not enough material extending up in the arm to use them properly with your glove without cutting off circulation due to twisting.

The construction on the jacket seemed pretty solid. The welding on the jacket looked really good. The laser drilled waterproof zippers, zip open and closed really easily and smoothly. My only complaint about the zippers was the actual piece you use to zip up and down seemed a little cheap and flimsy. Overall though, the construction was really solid. The jacket is also very functional with 5 outer pockets (2 chest, 2 hand, 1 arm) and 1 inner chest pocket designed for and mp3 player with pass through headphone slot that easily held my peanut butter and jelly sandwich. The pitzips are placed well, and dump a lot of heat when opened.

The material is pretty durable also. I skied a lot of tight trees and deflected many a branch without a tear, scratch, or pull on the fabric. It blocked the wind out, and even in relatively heavy snowfall, kept me dry all day long. The material is fairly thick, but feels light in terms of weight, especially for the thickness. This jacket is a shell, so there is no insulation, but it did a good job of keeping me warm, without overheating. On the coldest, windiest, day where the weather was well into the negative temps, I stayed warm in this shell with an insulator, t-shirt, and thermal underneath. The next few days it was in the high teens to mid twenties, and with a thermal and t-shirt on underneath, I was able to stay relatively warm the whole day.

Overall, I was really impressed with this jacket in every regard. Build quality, functionality, and features are on par with jackets from brands that are much higher in price. The lime green color looks great in person, and looks like a blend between a neon yellow and neon green highlighter. This is definitely a great jacket and a solid bargain considering everything you get with it. I can't wait to try it out on a backcountry tour. This jacket is so close to getting a 5 out 5. The only things I would change are: Slightly baggier fit (especially considering you will definitely have to upsize from your usual size), a looser hood (let us use the drawstring to tighten it if need be, it shouldn't start out so tight), and although the teeth and waterproofing on the zippers are top notch, the little piece you use to zip up and down are pretty flimsy.

If you're on a budget and need a great shell, definitely take a look at this one. It is very impressive.

Super tech, super tough.

By:
February 25, 2010

I picked this shell up early this winter, and have been rockin' it almost everyday for the past few months.

Fit: I'm 145 lbs, 5' 10". The medium would be a good alpine climbing fit, but I prefer a larger fit for skiing so I can wear a puffy underneath, and stash skins inside the shell for descending on cold days. So, I went with a a large in the lime.

Durability: As an avalanche forecaster, I spend A LOT of time in my technical clothing. Days filled with snowmobiles tend to be hard on things, and this shell has held up nicely. I have thrashed through many a tight forest, and the shell has yet to see any tears. The waterproof zippers have a nice tight feel to them too.

Design: I like the pocket layout in this shell. There is an interior i-pod pocket that holds my iphone nicely. When at the resort I wire in my earbuds and the phone stays toasty & dry inside the shell. The large outer pocket is the perfect size for my write in the rain field book too. The smaller chest pocket often holds my GPS when I'm in the field.

Functionality: While I have a few other shells in my quiver, none of them have come out since getting the bombshell. It's plenty breathable with the pit zips open for the skin track on nasty days. The arm gaiters are awesome as I tend to wear inside the cuff gloves. It does a great job of keeping snow out when digging pits or even for the occasional fall.

Style: I'm constantly complemented on this jacket. The Lime is a super bright shade that is a photographers dream. For me, bright is right in the backcountry. I want to be as visible as possible when I'm in the mountains. The only downside of the color is that it tends to pick up dirt pretty easily. I found that some shout advanced gel and time in the wash brought the stains right out.

Overall, I'm super psyched on this shell. I have Arc'teryx pieces in my collection, but this one is my favorite. It's stylie, durable & uber functional. Certainly the best bang for the buck out there.

Bombshell

By:
March 4, 2010

I really like this jacket a lot, but it could be better. First of all, I am 6' even, 190 lbs and got a large in black.

The things I like: the fit looks great although it is tight across my back and elbows when i bend them. Probably should have gone with a XL. Good hood, nice zippers (albeit the color), wrist gaiters, really burly fabric. Light for how strong the material seems. Really waterproof and the DWR is pretty good. Construction seems to be of great quality, but the draw cords need to be beefed up.

The things that bug me: For taller individuals, it isn't long enough. When I sit down to strap in my snowboard, my back/coin slot is immediately frozen and I don't sag or anything. The powderskirt is kind of tight and again not low enough. Also, if you use a pack, the pockets might not be high enough. Oh, and I've never used the arm pocket.

Overall, good jacket that could be great if a few changes were made.

Stoic Bombshell Jacket was not intended to be a summer shell. Weight and features (wrist gaskets, snow skirt) make this a pretty snow-specific style.

If looking for a summer weight shell - try the Stoic eVent Shell. This shell was designed to be a more versatile (lighter weight, breathable) shell that can be worn solo for protection in summer storms.

Review Title

Very nice product. Just came back from a decent storm at Alta with this and it performed great. Decently thick for a shell, seems like it will be durable. Elastic inner cuffs w/thumbloop and removable powderskirt keep you dry. Slim fit but still worked well with multiple layers underneath( 5'10'' 145lbs athletic build, purchased medium). Not much insulating value (none expected)but with a merino base layer and light softshell underneath I was warm at -5. My only two gripes, which are minor: the elastic for the hood comes out right by my mouth which was awkward when fully zipped. And fully zipped i could not pull the hood over my head. that said it also kept the hood from blowing off in gale-force winds.

Slick Jacket

By:
November 18, 2009

Just spent some time with my buddy's Stoic Bombshell and it's pretty sweet. It's basically the next generation of the BC.com Stoic 2.0 Shell (item #BCC0145) with some great new features. The cuffs and powderskirt will keep the snow out, but can be removed/tucked away when you dont need them. There are a few new pockets & smart ventilation.
Fit is the same as most BC gear: athletic with longer arms. And the hood should accommodate a helmet. Note: this is still a (soft)shell, so be sure you've got a quality insulating layer to match conditions. You can probably get a deal on last year's BC wool siphon hoody or the BC prime powerstretch top if you don't like rocking 2 hoods and losing style points.
VERY intelligent design and bomber construction throughout. The only pitfall I can see is that the thin elastic cord used to cinch the hood and waist will wear out eventually, but with a lifetime warranty & stellar customer service I wouldnt sweat it. 5 stars & will update if it under-performs over Thanksgiving.
Also, check out stoicgear.com for better pics & a bit more info (the site just launched so try later if it doesn't work). One last thing - this jacket's worth the full price, but with a little patience or searching you can probably get it way cheaper.

Great Jacket Backcountry.com rocks

By:
May 19, 2010

First of let me just say that backcountry.com has awesome customer service. I bought this jacket for $180 a while back and when it went on sale for $130 they reimbursed me for the difference, and in actual $$$ not store credit like a lot of other places do. In the past I have purchased things from this site even though some other site had it for a little cheaper because I know backcountry supports their customers better than any other place out there.
That being said let’s get to the jacket. I bought a large and it fits me (5’ 11’ 145 pounds) great. It’s got a little bagginess to it for style but still very functional, which is how I wanted it. I bought this because I needed a shell for touring and hot spring skiing conditions and it works great for that. I skied in very hot weather at mt.baker on the last day of the season and I stayed cool while still skiing hard. The waterproofing on this thing is top notch and I think the only way im ever going to get wet in this thing is if I were water skiing.
However I do have two issues with this jacket. First, there is no mesh in the pit zips like the product description says. I’m not sure if this is just my jacket or what the deal is, but I was a little bummed about that. Secondly, the wrist cuffs are pretty small and can it can be a little difficult to fit bulky gloves underneath them, but that’s not really a big deal. Despite both these this is a great jacket, especially considering the price. I would buy it again even if I knew about both of these flaws.

DOPE JACKET

By:
May 1, 2010

I'd been passively searching for a tech/rain jacket I could use for backpacking and snowboarding for over 2 months for under $150. I was about to settle for some Smarmot rain jacket with taped seams and no lifetime warranty, then I found Stoic (never heard of the brand but didn't hesitate once I learned its made by backcountry.com).

Ordered a small (I'm 5'7" @ 135lbs), got it the other day and I'm pumped. The fit is exactly what one wants, not baggy like some teenage fashion whim, roomy where there needs to be room for essential layering (ie the arm pits where a couple layers will add bulk) and the construction is SOLID.

I'm stoked to test it in nasty weather, though backed by a lifetime guarantee and since its made by backcountry I'm not worried at all.

I especially like the high neck/chin guard and the wrist gaitors.

If I could make a couple suggestions...
I'd move the hand pockets a little higher so one can access them while wearing a pack.
I'd look for a lighter material if possible
and offer one more bright color, like orange.

All in all...
Awesomely incredible jacket Stoic/backcountry.com. Arcteryx quality at half the price. I've gotten many complements even from fashionista girls who think outdoorsy people have no taste.

I look forward to making more purchases and supporting the Stoic line from backcountry.com.
Keep up the good work!!!

Worked Exactly as Intended

By:
January 26, 2010

I am 5'6" 145 lbs (168cm 65Kg). I wear a 16x34 shirt and have a 38" chest and 30.5" waist. I took this jacket cross country skiing in the Dolomites (Val Gardena, Italy) last week. Underneath, I wore the lightest weight Smartwool longsleeve undershirt, then a medium weight Smartwool zipneck, then a Backcountry Shift softshell zipneck under the Bombshell. It was minus 10C (14F) in the Vallunga valley when I started, and nearly -20C (-4F) when I reached the base of the mountains at the end of the valley, 5Km away from the XC start. I was a little warm, but I then dropped my skis and trekked up a footpath and then up a Backcountry ski path to a saddle on the upper right section of mountains. Weather was good, but windy. Nothing got through the jacket except my own steam. The arms were good and long for reaching while XC skiing and stretching to grab the next rock when ascending trail on foot. The roomier chest was great for mobility with poles. The material did NOT bunch in the armpits while wearing a backpack. On the way back down, I opened the pitzips and vented. I hopped back on the XC skis and was nice and cool the ride home. This jacket met my expectations, and I am an old man who believes that any piece of clothing over $100 better be dang good. It is.

I currently ski in a Orage Logan (mid/lightly insulated) jacket.
I want to move to a much more athletic looking jacket so that it's form fitting. I'm really interested in this shell.

I'd run this shell + Norrona 360 polartec fleece + midweight baselayer underneath.

I'm pretty concerned I'm going to be cold on lifts in Colorado on those cloudy sub 20 degree windy days.

Any thoughts on this?
(As a side note, I don't want to buy the insulated bombshell because I want to use this as a rain shell in the shoulder seasons as well.)

Also, is this jacket as fitted as it sounds/looks? I want that Euro-skier look :)

i use this shell in colorado most days. if it is brutally cold i will switch out for a down puffy, but almost all the time a base layer, and insulation layer will do for me. there isnt any insulation on the shell. it blocks the elements, which is all i ask from a shell. the fit is athletic cut, but not super tight. i find it the perfect balance of effective movement without too much material slowing you down. this is my most loved shell, it does everything i ask, and adds nothing i do not need.

Just got done with an epic spring pow day up at Mt. Baker and this jacket totally killed it. With the welded seams I was able to stay warm and dry all day while charging hard. Great pit zips for excellent breathability when heading up the bootpack and the neoprene cuffs help keep out the moisture. I usually ski in Colorado where you don't have to worry about a lot of moisture but this jacket definitely passed the test on one of the wettest days I have ever skied.

I've been through some pretty bad storms in it, and have stayed very dry. The velco on the cuffs are starting to come off, but nothing some glue won't fix.

Just for reference, I'm 5'8", 160, and that's the large I'm wearing.

This Jacket SUCKS -- Poor Quality controll -- Seams FAIL

I now HATE this jacket. The other day while ice skating, I looked down a discovered that the half of welding on my left sleeve had come undone. Fortunately it happened while skating and not somewhere like the top of Box Elder Peak during a white out. That could have been very, very bad, to say the least. Yes, I know the BC will replace it, but the Stoic product line is not reliable, which makes it useless. If you have a Stoic product, you should carry duct tape with you so you can repair the crappy lack of workmanship.

I don't know whether to order the L or the XL. I am 6'1 and 190 lbs, 39" chest and 35" waist. Will the L fit, be long enough and have enough space for a few layers (incl a stoic luft insulated sweater) and a beacon?
Or would ordering an XL be a better option?

Personally I like the athletic cut. Will the XL still have this cut?

I am asking beacuse I'm not living in the US and returning the jacket and changing it for another size would not be good for my wallet..

Rob and Suc, thanks for your comments. I better should have listened to you guys. I ended up ordering the L, which is a bit too short on the waist and the arms, and fit is quite the opposite of baggy.. Will return it for an XL.

Review Title

I just spent a week backcountry skiing in this jacket in the Eastern Sierra and I have to say I really love it. My brother is about to buy one after skiing with me. I am 6'5" and 180 lbs, long arms, wide shoulders, 32" waist. It is rare for a jacket to fit me as well as this one does. The thumb hole cuffs are a great feature but my arms are just a little too long to use them comfortably. The sleeve length is fine though. I am used to using a much lighter jacket and was very pleased with the warmth and toughness of this one. I kind of skiied through a tree and I thought for sure I had ripped the sleeve but it was unharmed. The hood worked well with a hat and goggles. The rubberized powder skirt worked well as did the velcro sleeve closures. Probably a bit heavy for overnight trips in the spring but perfect for winter stuff.

the jacket has some stretch like a soft shell, and it isnt a super rough texture like some hard shells, in that respect it is like a soft shell. having said that, the performance is well beyond what any soft shell offers for protection from the elements. fully welded seams, 20k waterproof rating, and 15k breathable rating make it a very tech piece, capable of fending off rain, any most any snow you will encounter

Stoked on Stoic

December 26, 2009

So I recently purchased the Welder Hi Jacket and had mixed feelings. It fit nicely, good sleeve length, and kept me incredibly warm. . . almost too warm. I also just got the Bombshell and I'm far more impressed with this jacket. I'm not sure why you'd make a ski / alpine type jacket and leave out a helmet fitted hood, wrist gatiers, powder skirt, or media pocket. These are all features that the Bombshell has yet the Welder has none of. The Welder is a top notch jacket but it falls short in those above mentioned areas. If you paired these jackets up gave the Welder all the features of the Bombshell I would definitely be keeping both jackets. . . however at this point I'll be returning the Welder, keeping the Bombshell and simply adding one more layer. I'm 6'3" 205 and the XL fits just right and the brown / orange is a pretty blinging colour scheme.

Thanks for the help! One last question...I've never skied with a non-insulated jacket before and that is one of my biggest decisions right now (whether to go with this one or the other insulated jacket). I do most of my skiing in the northeast around New Jersey/New York area, with a trip up to Vermont every winter. With no insulation, would a jacket like this offer enough warmth?

Factoring in layering and all, does anyone have a specific temperature range for which they feel this jacket would be comfortable? What about the insulated jacket? Or the Stoic Welder Hi Softshell?

Thanks a lot!

Doug,
I'm 6'1" and 185lbs. Large is perfect. I ditched the insulated jacket last year since I ski hard through trees and bumps. My body temp rises really fast so was tired of getting overheated and not being able to regulate temp as well.

Having said that, early season at Winter Park/Mary Jane was in the single digits (below zero wind chill at times) and this jacket paired with the slim-fit stoic down sweater + patagonia base layer was just perfect. The ample number of vents allowed great airflow without losing the waterproofing. Did a roll through tree powder yesterday (buried up to my neck in snow) and I didn't feel a drop of moisture...good feeling.

Hope this helps.

this jacket is near zero for insulation. it keeps the wind/water out. how much energy are you spending while skiing? i wear a wool base layer under it every day. it would have to be sunny spring skiing for that. for early season in colorado i wear a thin 1/4 zip wind breaker. it is very light, and breathable, but it keeps the wind out. after that i have a 200 weight patagonia fleece if i still need layers. if im still going to be cold i wear a down jacket instead.

to fit all that i have to size up from a M to L. normally i wear M for everything, and some S, but for layers, size up on the jacket.

i ski very hard, and a lot of the time i am hiking my own turns, so i am building heat on the way up. if im just cruising laps on the lifts, and not working hard, i get colder much faster.

hope that helps

Great jacket, but has its quirks

By: Departmentofgoods.com Employee
December 30, 2009

Bought this jacket. Its incredible. well built, the welded seams are great. Its really light. The mix of blue zippers on the black is AWESOME. Within seconds of it arriving I already had compliments on its looks.

However, it garnished 3 stars mainly because of the fit. I wear Large normally so I bought a large. it fits around the chest, but the arms are really long on me. And down in the stomach area its extremely tight. I'm not exactly mr big (though I'm no stick either) and I have to suck in and make sure my shirt doesn't get caught in the zipper. A shell should not fit like that in my opinion. I could make due, but I wont' be able to wear anything more than a tee under it.

Some random points: the hood is not removable, though it is fully adjustable. Its HUGE by the way, and fits a helmet great. There is a really soft material around the chin that when you zip it up all the way you just go "ahhh" to the way it feels (its extremely comfortable and smooth/soft). The powder skirt is removable by zipper. The liner is a mostly gray with some black (on the black/blue color at least). the pockets are mesh lined and can double as venting. A great idea, but I worry about the practical use. You can adjust the powder skirt from within the pockets with is a handy feature.

Washed in front loader, "new style" energy star washer. Used 2 caps of Nikwax techwash. Smells better. Does not look clean from small areas where I touched the jacket on the ski rack on the car. Oh well. Still works. Plan to use the wash-in waterproofing after next wash. We'll see how it goes.

January 24, 2010

Hey David

Thanks for the comments! My dimensions are right on the big side for a large. I have tons of stoic gear and all in XL (insulated bombshell, welder hi, etc). I was mainly hoping that our shell was going to be more of a shell and allow for layering as large is my natural size, but I am an odd shaped person, I have usually short arms, very broad shoulders and a big waist but I'm by no means fat. I've heard about welded seams coming apart - but I have faith in stoic and its not like I will be washing my gear all the time. I've yet to wash any stoic gear I have. And of course you want to use a very delicate wash with a shell like this. Nikwax tech wash is the best options.

I'm a a boarder myself, and I use my insulated bombshell for boarding mainly and it works like clockwork. I this jacket for wearing around town mainly as it does fit, just doesn't allow me to layer as needed for boarding and snowshoeing/hiking.

No idea what your dimensions are, but I am 5'6" 145-150lbs, wear a 16 neck-34 sleeve shirt. I just got mine from SAC yesterday, and immediately tried it on, thinking I was going to have to size up. No need to size up. However.... I would NOT wear this jacket for dead-of-winter Alpine skiing. I am going to wear it for NORDIC skiing, due to its long arms, which are great when I am reaching with poles. Again... NOT FOR ALPINE. Even with my 30.5" waist, there is no way to layer without giving yourself stomach cramps. My other response is that although you like the welded seams... BEWARE. If you do anything but hand-wash this jacket (and use it for high-intensity - read "sweaty" - sports) then the welding areas will flake and fray after 10-15 washes (in a conventional, augur-style, old school washer -- the new washers that just bounce your stuff around in half a cup of water won't harm it, but probably won't make it clean, either, imho). Again, because of the long arms, I would also use it for cold-weather road biking. But, this jacket ain't made for low-intensity sports, even if it's advertised as such, unless you DO size up and wear plenty of lining.

Very Happy

By:
November 20, 2009

I got my jacket on S&C for less than $150. At this price it made buying the coat a no brainer. I am 5'5 185 lbs and I am fitting in the medium. I am thinking I could have gone with a large, but I like the more athletic fit of the medium personally. I have been exploring the jacket and keep finding something out about it. Part of me feels like it's a little too cute for its own good. For example I don't foresee using the arm pocket, but then again I never know. I have been out in the rain and it does a great job at keeping wetness out. Nothing but beads of water rest on the surface of the jacket. The drawstrings on the powder skirt and the hood seem like they are flimsy. Not sure if they are going to break or not. Very happy with the purchase.

i find anything beyond 20K waterproof to be over kill for fabric on skiing. some companies might claim more, but if you have 20K waterproof, its pretty much a rain jacket, minus the seams and zippers. there are no seams here, its welded, which i find much better. the zipper is as waterproof as you're going to find.

as for breathing, personal experience is this breaths better than gore pro. you will find more breathing in event, if thats what you want, stoic has a shell for that too. i will take this for a trim fit tech shell over anything out there. other brands cost more, but they do not offer more performance.

oh, i did not mention hyvent, i think it is below both gore and event on all issues.

Very Slim Fit

By:
February 3, 2010

Just received my Stoic Bombshell Jacket in a medium. Tried it on and it seems to fit well in the shoulders, chest and arms. However, it really tapers towards the waist and is almost difficult to zip up. I am 5'9" 165 lbs.

I might try this in a large but I'm not sure because the arms may end up being too long. It is just too slim through the midsection to really be comfortable even with only a baselayer on.

Everything else seems fine and I like the stretchy fabric. I think I would really like this jacket if it just fit.

Love everything but the fit

By:
January 25, 2010

I really wanted to love this jacket, but at 5'7", 140 lb the medium fit was weird. I didn't try the large as the arm length was great, and the shoulder room was perfect, but the mid section to the waist simply tapered too much for my liking. Another reviewer described it as a "European fit"; I guess that means it is too slimming for a ski jacket. Hopefully they come out with a more layer friendly option for their next ski apparel line; less slimming and just a tad longer. Other than the fit, the features are flawless.

A great shell jacket. You could take a shower in this and not get wet. Pockets are where you would want them. High quality seams and zippers. Well vented for long tours or warm days. I could do without the flash contrast in colors but the jacket is still worth it. Just like the pants the sizes are slightly smaller than most brands. All in all i would recommend this jacket to anybody who is looking for a great waterproof ski jacket.

I was able to pick one of these up on SAC for a ridiculous price and am so glad I pulled the trigger. After looking at All the pricier Arct'eryx Beta and Theta SV shells, I'm so happy I went with this. The Bombshell material is amazing(although no Gore-tex pro, it more than holds its own), the jacket is ridiculously light weight, and offers everything I want and need in a tech shell. A very similar fit to the Arct'eryx shells, I'm 6'1, about 190 with a fairly athletic build and the Large fits me perfectly. Slim, but just enough room for a few layers depending on the conditions. I have long arms and love the length of the arms on this jacket. Its always hard for me to find clothing that fits me because of the long arms and stoic always seems to nail this. The media pocket is a great touch and all the front pockets offer a ton of options. The two chest pockets especially are great if your sporting a pack with waist straps for easy access. Wrist gaiters are great, and are constructed much better than most jackets I've tried. The adjustable hood is a definite plus as well. I got the Bombshell Bibs to go with this(blue ones) and although they are bright as hell, they go together perfectly. I'm headed out to the rockies for a two week ski trip, I'll update my thoughts when I get the chance to fully test this baby out.

In conclusion, Stoic/backcountry nails another jacket perfectly. I'd easily pay the normal price of $259 but if you can get it on SAC or Tramdock for half off you won't be disappointed. My next goal is either the insulated Bombshell for the colder days, or the Welder HI softshell.

Sleeve extensions were useful and pockets were accessable with pack and rope on. Walked out for 8 hours in constant wind and rain and stayed mostly dry - suprisingly.

Nice but slim

By:
January 5, 2010

This jacket seems to have it pretty dialed in....except for the fact that it was a true slim cut! I am 6ft, 180lbs, 34" waist, always wear a Large T-shirt and jacket, but this Large was too slim and the sleeves and torso were too short. This is def not a jacket you are going to be able to layer very thick, I even tried my OR Synth insulated jacket on underneath and it was longer than the Bombshell and lost all loft because of the tight fit.

On the positive side, it seemed to be a very well constructed jacket. The features are nice, I was impressed by how unrestricted the jacket feels, even though it is tight (no binding when moving arms.) My only complaint was that none of the pockets would expand enough to be able to stash a pair of gloves or even a beanie...but hey, the jacket was definitely NOT flapping in the wind when flying down the slopes around Lake Tahoe!

Bottom Line: If you are 5'10" and 160lbs, the large is the jacket for you (esp if you find it on SAC!)

This jacket is bullet proof and fits amazingly well! Im 6'5'' 215 and got the XXL it has broad enough shoulders for me and a slender fit which i love! the sleeve length is longer than most, but my 37'' arms are still a bit too long but ive learned to deal with it. all in all a great jacket

cool jacket, weird fit

By:
December 23, 2009

I got this of SAC, great deal. I got the brown/orange one and like the color a lot. I'm 5'6, 130lbs and ordered a small. The length is great, and from the pits down it's nice and slim, actually a little tight around my 29" waist. Above the pits is where the fit goes all wrong. The arms and shoulders are HUGE. Not only are the arms huge in volume, but they go well past my fingers, which is weird because the waist is fairly short. Alas, I'll be returning the jacket.

Baller Jacket

Got this jacket on SAC and couldn't be more stoked. It's super water proof; I use it mostly for walking around campus in Oregon and the rain beads right off. The fit is a little bit weird (for me at least) the torso is just a little below my belt line and the sleeves are about the right length of the jacket was a little longer. That aside, I'm still really stoked on it as a whole. The black and neon blue looks great too.

great overall product, kept me very dry, well placed pockets, liked the adjustable hood, gaiters. Only downside was that im 6'3" 170 lbs and i ordered the xl, which fits well on the shoulders and arms, but was too short in the back and rides up when your charging a line or just sitting on the chairlift, other than that i love it.

Hello.. At your weight and length, are you drowning in the XL or does it still have an athletic cut?

Lives up to the Name

I actually own two of these jackets on in Lime and one in Espresso. The fabric has a nice feel to it, and can definitely stand up to any kind of abuse you throw at it. It breathes well, and repels all that cold smoke pow, so you stay dry. I have used this jacket for touring, skiing at the resort, and snowmobiling. Just layer appropriately and you'll be set. On to sizing, I am 5' 11" and weigh 180lbs. This jacket definitely has a technical fit, the waist is a bit high on it. For a more technical fit I would go with a Large(ie touring). For a baggier fit(snowmobiling/resort skiing) I went with an X-Large.

Great Jacket

Got this jacket for my bro for Christmas and he loves it. Techincal fit, and features, at a much more reasonable price. Water proofing is great, breathability is excellent as well. The bombshell has long arms and a fitted torso (think Arc'teryx). Great for someone who is a bit lanky. My brother is 6ft and about 180, AKA lanky, He has more then enough room in the arms and the fit around the waist is perfect. A great jacket for the budget techincally minded skier, boarder or outdoor enthuiast!

The meaning

By: Departmentofgoods.com Employee
February 6, 2010

Stoicism was a school of Hellenistic philosophy founded in Athens by Zeno of Citium in the early 3rd century BC. The Stoics considered destructive emotions to be the result of errors in judgment, and that a sage, or person of "moral and intellectual perfection," would not undergo such emotions.[1] Stoics were concerned with the active relationship between cosmic determinism and human freedom, and the belief that it is virtuous to maintain a will (called prohairesis) that is in accord with nature. Because of this, the Stoics presented their philosophy as a way of life, and they thought that the best indication of an individual's philosophy was not what a person said but how he behaved.[2] Later Roman Stoics, such as Seneca and Epictetus, emphasized that because "virtue is sufficient for happiness," a sage was immune to misfortune. This belief is similar to the meaning of the phrase 'stoic calm', though the phrase does not include the "radical ethical" Stoic views that only a sage can be considered truly free, and that all moral corruptions are equally vicious.[3]

Stoiced!

I have purchased alot of Stoic gear this year and they have yet to dissapoint. This jacket is very nice. Welded seems, athletic fit, very light and waterproof.

I bought this for my brother as a gift, he is 6' 1" with long arms slim build. I got him the XL which is perfect length in the arms, and comes down just below his waist. An athletic fit, but enough room to layer underneath.

Great waterproofing and breathability. We hit a snag when a branch ripped a big whole in the right shoulder. But with BC's excellent return policy we were taken care of and able to get a replacement jacket right away! Woohooo go BC!.

Big Disappointment

By:
May 12, 2010

As a huge backcountry.com fan and former owner of a backcountry.com event jacket I was very excited to receive the bombshell. I asked a gear head what size I should get and they told me to buy an XL. I am 190lbs and 6’1 and the XL was huge so I exchanged it for a large. When I got the large I took it out to the slopes, I am a ski racer and avid backcountry skier. I was so disappointed. The backcountry.com jacket I had before outperformed this jacket in every aspect. This jacket was bulky and had a weird fit. Whenever I went fast the jacket bulked up around my neck forcing me to zip it up all the way past my chin. It also has a huge amount of loose space. I am not a small guy and as a ski racer I am forced to train weight train multiple times a week and I still found the arms to be gigantic. The extra material would flap back and forth while I was skiing. The zippers were also pretty cheap and jammed a lot. Don’t waste your money on this jacket, go on geartrade.com and buy a backcountry.com event shell and you will be completely satisfied. I went back and bought a used one from geartrade because that jacket was the best and they are the only website that has any in medium, large or xl. Just make sure to get the right size.
