Solstice hands out weather invulnerability with the Vidar Men's 3-Layer Jacket. 20K waterproofing means that you'd be pretty happy in a full-blown downpour—depending, of course, on what kind of day you're having. The subtle styling will have you strutting around in the Vidar for years without ever having to dread the family ski-trip snapshots. Other features include underarms zips, a removable hood, and enough pocket space for your Aunt Milly's entire porcelain animal statuette collection.
I ordered this jacket as a skiing hardshell to go over my Mountain Hardware softshell. My MH softshell was XL, so I ordered an XL for the Solstice Vidar. It was huge, much too large. Andre the Giant might dig it. I am 6'1" and almost 200 lbs, 44 inch chest, 34 inch waist. The construction seemed legit, but I sent the XL Vidar back and went with an XL Sherpa Hybrid for my shell.
I really want to use this more as a backpacking/camping jacket than a Ski shell. Is the the Vider too bulky/heavy to use as a backpacking jacket? Or is it light/packackable and Impenetrable?! I'm going for something I can use in serious downpours in the summer and still layer underneith for winter use.
I got one, my brother got one... They are bomb-proof.Don't hesitate. If you don't understand why this jacket is stiff, you don't deserve it. I'm 6'1" 210 and the large fits awesome. My brother is 6'6" 220 and the XL fits great. Great set-up of pockets, nice sleeve length, sturdy buttons.... I was swept up into a tornado and survived because of this jacket....
Got it for $90 on SAC. Nice construction, totally waterproof and lots of well placed pockets. A great replacement for my recently shredded MH shell, only way cheaper and tougher (MH is way too expensive for tissue thin products). I am 6'1" and 170 lbs, 32" waist and the medium is roomy enough for layers with nice long sleeves and torso. Highly recommended from someone who is very hard on their clothing.
I would go with the small. I had to drop down a size once I got mine delivered because it was way too roomy. Its a great jacket - I've used it for everything, from bike commuting in the pouring rain to skiing deep powder.
Tried with a hose outside...then got chilly and went inside under the shower.
I just got this jacket today in the mail, so I haven't "field" tested it yet, but i did do a quick water test outside and then inside, did great and I did't get wet at all. I'm just shy of 6 ft and around 180 lbs. I ordered the large and it fits great, enough room to layer underneath, but not too bulky that I feel awkward.
Overall, I am very pleased with this shell. When I was looking at ski gear to buy for the winter, I didn't want a baggy jacket that was uncomfortable. Instead, I wanted something a lot lighter but still able to keep me warm. This shell is great however, it is necessary to wear insulated layers under the jacket due to it not being insulated. It has plenty of pockets for your gloves, phone, iPod, etc. I would reccamend this shell for skiiers and snowboarders who ride in temperatures above 10 degrees farenheit. Excellent shell.
same question as jed. i just bought a jacket off of steep and cheap today because it seemed like a screaming deal, but there is nothing to be found on the solstice brand anywhere. is this quality gear?
Does anybody have any reviews on this jacket? Will it stand up to the nastiest downpour? Will the the shoulders wear out and leak with pack usage? I have searched trying to find anything on this coat and yet nothing. Answers would be gratefully appreciated if you are familiar with this jacket. Thank You
I live near Portland,OR where Solstice hails from and have had a 3L bib/pant from Solstice for at least 8 years; it's bomber and fully waterproof. I just bought this 3L Vidar Jacket today and expect a decade of perfection again. Yes, it's a hidden gem, as good as Patagonia or Mammut IMO. Enjoy :) ~Matthew
I haven't tested it through a blizzard yet but it's held up to my expectations so far. The fit is perfect I'm 5'11'' 200lb and L fits well, just enough room to fit a thin sweater and fleece underneath and felt perfect this Thanksgiving in -15*F windy weather.
Just a little long in the arms but velcro sleeves are there of course, rather have an inch long than short in sleeves. Only thing I wish was there was a pouch you could roll the hood into, I enjoyed that in my last jacket but I couldn't zip the hood off like you can with this one.
Can't really beat bang for your $ with this $120 sale for a solid hardshell jacket.
