Smith Threshold Interchangeable Polarized Sunglasses - 2006 BCS
The Smith Threshold has a sleek, wrap-around design to provide full coverage for a wide variety of faces. Smith's patented Interchangeable lens system utilizes distortion-free lenses to provide precise optical clarity and maximize coverage while minimizing peripheral exposure to sun, wind, and glare.
Smith's Tapered Lens Technology (TLT), gives you a distortionless view of objects -- something that gives you optical quality you'd expect only from glasses that cost twice as much. As you might've already experienced, visual distortion occurs when light waves hit an aggressively curved lens causing them to refract. This refraction causes a prismatic effect, or distortion. TLT corrects the distortion by progressively tapering the lens thickness from the optical center toward the peripheral edges. With TLT, light waves travel directly to your eye to generate precise vision and reduce potential eye fatigue. Objects are clearly defined and seen in their exact position.
Beyond TLT technology is the fact that your lenses are Carbonic -- the most impact resistant lens material money can buy. Smith treats them with an anti-scratch coating to keep them as new as possible, as long as possible. They're light, they exceed ANSI Z80.3 specifications, and they protect your eyes from 100% of the UVA, UVB, and UVC rays out there.
The Grilamid TR90 frame provides you with maximum comfort, maximum flexibility, maximum toughness, and maximum resistance to sweat and sunscreen. And the hydrophilic Megol nose and temple pads keep them locked in place on your face. They won't slip. They won't slide. They won't fall off.
The Smith Threshold offers a great degree of coverage and is considered a Large Fit. It's available in three colors -- Black, Graphite, Matte Black Evolve. Each frame color comes with a unique set of bright conditions lenses. Beyond this, you'll get a set of RC30, Yellow, and Clear lenses. RC30 a universal conditions tint that provides excellent vision in a wide variety of light. It enhances depth perception, increases contrast, and sharpens visual acuity. It's an ideal choice for overcast conditions. The Yellow lenses are ideal for amplifying available light in flat and low light conditions. Switching between lenses is a total breeze, and can be done in a matter of moments without tools.

These would have been great but the lenses keep falling out. Had to return them :(
worth the extra for polarized.
October 17, 2008
this is a super lightweight and easily transferable lens. very easy to swap in/out when conditions change. by far one of the best setups for variable light conditions. ever.
now, if only they weren't stolen with the rest of my worldly possessions! keep these under lock and key. they've been known to be pilfered by your spouse.
The descriptive copy assumes you know what color "RC30" and "Igniter" are. So what color lenses actually come with these?

I've never been happier with a pair of sunglasses
February 10, 2011
I rocked a pair of Smith Serpicos in the gold & brown for a year or so before going over to a pair of Smith Thresholds. The Serpicos now sit in the glove compartment as my backup shades, never to see the light of day again, as long as the Thresholds are in one piece; they are that good.
I cannot say enough about the quality of Smith optics; I prefer them over all other brands, including Oakleys.
The Serpicos are a very fun style, you will get comments from everyone about them, and you might even get a little flirtatiousness from a cute little waitress in Mammoth...just sayin', but the Thresholds are the best hiking shades I have ever owned.
They stay on my face, vent well, come with multiple lenses, and a protective hard case. The lenses are just so clear and distortion-free, and the shades themselves are so light.
I've never been happier with a pair of sunglasses, even when I dropped big money on Oakleys or Maui Jims...
Functional and practical.

I bought these for cycling and was impressed with the fit. No wind issues while racing downhill. I look forward to skiing with them next season.
Lense replacement is quick and easy (and the lenses never popped out on me).
The optics are high enough qualilty that I use them for golf. They are extremely light, and durable. And the polarized lenses are great for water sports. I would recommend these shades even at suggested retail, so pick up a pair on SAC.
Are they ANZ rated for protection??
Are they ANZ rated for protection??
May 10, 2009
No - they are not ANSI Z87.1 rated for physical impact protection. However, Smith does state that all their sunglasses are ANSI Z80.3 rated for light transmittance protection. Smith does make ANSI Z87.1 rated glasses that are excellent - but these are not them.

Lenses fall out too easily
May 31, 2012
I am all for interchangeable lenses but these lenses fall out way to easy. Set them down on the counter upside down and pick them up without lenses. Put them on top of the head and have the lenses plink down beside you with others to remind you to collect the lenses. Sorry. Love the idea but the application doesn't work.
March 14, 2008
I love the fact that Smith has interchangeable lenses. This is huge when you are dealing with different times of the day. as far as these glasses go, much better than the Slider 01 series. The lenses are easier to take in and out, and seems like they are most stable. When these glasses sit on your face, they just take over. They are light, and wrap completely around my odd shaped head. They stick to my face even when I am sweating a lot. They come with a nice case with 3 extra colored lenses. I would recommend these glasses to anyone who is into Biking, hiking, or any outdoor sports. I will never go with another brand but Smith......Oakley--never again!!
The best sunglassses
January 25, 2007
These are the best sunglasses that I have ever owned. I purchased them for my African Safari, which I have yet to go on, however since I misplaced my military issued Oakleys, I used the Smith's to run with on a very bright and windy day in Iraq. They stayed on my face and kept the sand and wind from affecting my vision. Best of all, they are so light weight that you don't feel them on your face, if anything you notice them when you are not wearing them and wish you had, as I did the next morning, during my pitch black early morning run. The sun was gone but the wind was still kicking, I regretted leaving them behind. BTW, I still haven't found my Oakley's, but I am not looking too hard for them because changing out the lenses on the Oakleys is like wrestling a very small alligator that will break easily if you don't do it right. With the Smith's, all you do is slide the lenses in and out of the frame, way easier!
can you switch the lenses out for prescription?
can you switch the lenses out for prescription?
April 7, 2009
Smith does not make a prescription lenses for Thresholds. I even took my pair in to a local shop that does custom lenses and even they could not do it due to the design of the Threshold frame.
I know it sounds like a great idea to swap in a prescription lenses but I just don't think it's practical.
I like Smith sunglasses but for prescription I'd go with Oakley. Smith customer service was not very helpful to me at all despite the fact one is able to speak to a live person fairly easily. I got the impression that they could really give a rat's ass about helping me find a prescription pair of their glasses.
May 20, 2009
To my knowledge yes you can, but you would have to have Smith make you a prescription specific lens. I do know that they do such a thing. I would just give them a call at 800-635-4401 and see what they can do for you.

Just got back from a tropical vacation. Love the functionality of these glasses and being able to change lens based on differing light conditions. This is my 2nd pair lost my originals a couple years back, so I'm glad I found my way back to them. Great fit for my face and a cool look.
Bring the Catalyst back!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
February 5, 2012
Love this line of Smith glasses. I have been getting this line since 2002. So I have seen altot of changes in the design. Just cant leave a good thing alone. In my opinon the Catalyst were the best. The Threshold frames are to big. I wish they would bring the sleek design of the Catalyst back. I give these glasses two thumbs down. This will most likely be the last pair of this line i ever get from smith.
May 11, 2011
I've had these since spring '09 & could not be happier. Plus you gotta love a lifetime warranty, that Smith will cover practically anything on a return. Smith has taken care of myself pretty good. These are great for when I'm doing any kind of active sport.
are these a good sunglass to buy for bright days? Interchangeable,
are these a good sunglass to buy for bright days? Interchangeable, how?
April 12, 2008
My graphite color Thresholds came with 4 sets of lenses that range from clear, through yellow and rose, to polarized brown. Lenses slide/rotate out the top of the frames. If you check the product view of the front of the frames, you will see the opening in the frames above each lens.
I'd like to add these glasses fit like they were made for me alone. And I've heard the same from everyone else who has worn them. Truly remarkable achievement in fit. I did manage to break the frames in a fall that left me with a concussion, two broken ribs, and without a pair of Thresholds! I hope y'all can be gentler on your Thresholds.

hell ya dude they have the dark lenses that block out the sun perfectly

Real Nice Glasses in wrong case
April 14, 2011
These sunglasses are great! They came with 4 sets of lenses that are easy to change and fit with confidence in the frame. The frame has some give to it and would probably withstand a blow without breaking.
No complaints about the sunglasses BUT the case provides no easy way to stow the extra lenses. There is a provision for storing lenses but it is the wrong size; it's as if the case was intended for a different pair of glasses.
April 10, 2011
The Pros: The lenses for these shades are amazing and Smith makes a set for virtually all lighting conditions. The lenses are quick to swap out so your friends aren't waiting as you dork out and change them. Nose and ear pieces are comfortable for all day use.
The Cons: They ride very close to the brow line which is great for wind but causes them to fog easily especially while being active. The lens holder in the case could use some help.... something seems to have changed. The 1/2 drop of glue that holds the velcro inside the case seperates almost instantly, the corners get pinched in the zipper, and I'd have to stretch it with a team of horses to actually get the lenses in.
Overall these are great shades for any activity! My only recommendation is that you invest in GOOD croakies to keep them out of the river!
All You Need!!!
February 4, 2011
4 pairs of shades in 1!!! Great quality and interchangeability! Perfect in all light, with good polarization! Comfortable with good fit, and the case with storage was a plus! For the price, definatly a good deal!!! Was a die-hard Oakley fan but these have swayed me!!!
Smith Threshold Sliders
November 5, 2010
I've had several pairs of these now because I tend to be on the forgetful side. I really , really like these shades! They're a larger fit and they fit my larger face and noggin well. They are so comfortable that I forget I have them on. The Polarized lenses are super-high quality and worth every penny.
October 30, 2010
These are the best sunglasses ever! Lightweight, durable, good shields from the wind. I bike, ski, kayak, play tennis, and play golf in these. Polarized grey lense excellent for sunny day, while ignitor lense perfect for everything from sun to shady overcast. Also have yellow lense for night. It cuts glare when playing tennis under light. Also, Smith warranty great. A wire began to stick through the rubber arm pad. Sent them to Smith and they sent me back a new pair. Would highly recommend.
August 10, 2010
I love my Thresholds. The lenses are the perfect size for keeping bugs, rocks, and dirt out of your eyes when mountain biking. The polarized lenses work awesome when paddling rivers so you can see the rocks sleeping below the surface of the water.
May 14, 2010
Decent shades -- a bit big on the face. Also the gray lens are just OK. But the polarized lens are sweet!! Honestly I like the Sequels better...
Smith does it again
December 24, 2009
Smith glasses are awesome! My previous pair, the first interchangeable lens, lasted me 10 years and counting. I had to mend the screw hinges, but the rugged plastic frame persevered. I put 10,000 miles on my cross bike with those frames. The interchangeable lens really help with changing light conditions on a ride. The old yellow lens worked great for night biking.
I decided to upgrade to the Thresholds and love these even more! The polarized lens help with snow and water glare and the crispness retained is wonderful. I lost my first pair after 6 months and I am buying another pair. To the lucky duck that found my Smiths in Chicago, "Enjoy them!"
Steep and Chapped
November 23, 2009
Fit my fat face perfectly. Nice hard shell case too. SAT rocks!
June 2, 2009
Very lightweight, snug fit, easy to change lenses (polarized glasses comes with clear, yellow, red, and brown lenses). I use these for mountain biking and I love them. Cheaper and just as comfortable as Oakley. Way easy to change these lenses compared to other brands I have tried.
Worth the money.
January 26, 2009
Polarized lenses are excellent for use on the water. Earpieces are bendable to fit your head better, which for me is the best feature of these! Earpieces wear through eventually (years) but Smith will send you new ones free. Yellow lenses work well for shooting and evening biking.
whats mine is hers!
September 30, 2008
Ilove these glasses, the second pair of them i have owned. light weight, flexible, durable, multisport glasses. like my previous sunglasses, once my wife tries them she'll want her own
Don't lend them to your wife
September 19, 2008
My wife just lost the second pair of my glasses kayaking in the Broken Islands. The first pair she lost is in places unknown. I am distraught. Bullet proof glasses in all light with the choice of 4 lenses. My only complaint is that the rubber in the arms would poke through the ends and had to be handled carfully.
June 10, 2008
Light, durable, good looking, and easily changed lenses. What's not to love? Highly recommended.
Smith Threshhold Sliders
May 22, 2008
I owned a pair of these glasses for several years and the rubber ear pieces started to wear through. I sent the pair back to Smith and they sent me a brand new pair. No cost. I was very impressed and greatful. When my new glasses fell out of the back of my bike riding to work one day and got run over by a car and completely destroyed I did not even hesitate and bought a brand new pair. I love the light weight feel of these glasses
Biking in the evening
October 1, 2007
I got these glasses because I am often mountain biking in the low light of evening, and my normal sunglasses were too dark, but I still needed something over my eyes to protect them from the wind as I rode downhill.
The clear lenses fit that need well.
The only problem I have had with these glasses is that they fogged up while running in the snow.
Great Sunglasses- No case
January 18, 2007
These are great sunglasses. I love the interchangeable lenses; you get 4 sunglasses in one. However, they do not come with a protective case. Overall- great quality and value.
So far so good!
November 20, 2006
I was hesitant to buy sunglasses online since it's hard for me to find one that fits my face. I saw these on sale and picked it up and they fit perfect! Light, snugged, and I love the fact that I can change the lenses. The lifetime warranty is also nice since I've broken a number of sunglasses so far. Hopefully this will be my last one. Fast shipping from this site.
Excellent Quality! Recomended!
November 10, 2006
Bought my first pair of Smith sunglasses back in 2000. I thought I'd never pay this much for a pair of shades. Took my chances and it paid off! Those Smith Sliders lasted six years. (I finally lost them or they would have lasted ten+} I was so impressed by the quality and durability I wouldn't even consider owning any other brand of sunglasses. I got online and found these Smith Threshold shades here at Backcountry.com cheaper than anywhere else. These are the model closest to the pair I lost. I got them within four days as promised. These shades are great, even better than before. Slightly lighter weight and a more balanced polarization compared to the previous model I owned. I couldn't be more satisfied!
What more do I need?
October 26, 2006
These sunglasses are just what I was looking for--pretty much a 4-in-1 deal. Ideal for days on the slopes, beach wear, hiking and biking, these are some of the best sunglasses I've owned. They actually stay on my face--even during that occasional wipeout.
WOW, VERY Impressed!
October 24, 2006
I spent the past 10 years buying nothing but cheap $3 sunglasses and got fed up with them always breaking on me. I finally decided to by the Smith Thresholds because of Smith's reputation as well as the versatility of the interchangeable lenses. I am so impressed by the quality of the sunglasses that I will never buy another pair of cheap sunglasses again. Overall, an excellent experience.
October 27, 2006
I won these at a work party and I was stoked, these fit my face PERFECT! My face is small. The problem with all the glasses I always have is the piece that goes behind the ear is too long and when I wear my skate helmet it shoves the tips into my head and hurts, these fit perfect with a skate helmet and are killer awesome! the lenses are super easy to take in and out and there are different lenses that come with them, the yellows are awesome for lower light conditions and great for hiking the snow after work when the sun is starting to go do. Buy these, you will love them!
September 11, 2006
Received the glasses at a great price--$40 less than what I could find in stores. Very nice product.
