SmartWool TML Light SportKnit Full-Zip Top - Men's

Item # SWL0631

The SmartWool TML (Thermal Midlayer) Light SportKnit Full-Zip Top has a form-fitting cut that allows for a slim-fit baselayer underneath without a floppy or restrictive feel. Slide into this merino top for hikes, climbs, ski tours, and snowshoe adventures.

  • Soft merino regulates your body temperature and handles odor so your tent mates and touring partners won't avoid you
  • A touch of elastic keeps the fit comfortable and clean
  • SmartWool styling means you'll look sharp grabbing a refreshment after your climb, hike, or deep powder laps
  • Thumbholes make it easy to layer this top under your softshell or jacket

Smartwool for outrigger canoeists

By:
May 27, 2012

I wear my Smartwool shirt when I paddle my outrigger canoe (OC-1) in the early spring or late fall.

It is dark orange, so it is easily visible on or in the water. That was important to me. I don't know why the marketing types insist on giving vague color names to items such as "canyon" that tell you nothing. I find the practice of describing colors as "canyon" or "watermelon" or "mocha latte" counterproductive. It is no help, it only confuses.

It is wool therefore it provides warmth even when it is wet. Most cute high tech "wicking" fabrics don't provide warmth when they are saturated.

It unzips and zips easily so I can maintain a proper body temperature. It is long enough to warm my entire torso and it offers partial hand coverage if I lose my neoprene gloves..

It has a pocket that'll hold a lockblade knife and whistle.

It is soft and comfortable, and doesn't pill in the dryer.

In a word, I like it and it is what I need when I am on the edges of the paddling season and the air temperature is starting to go up and the water temperature is still in the 50s.

I agree with Shawn - the way wool moves moisture away from your body you will ruin the efficiency of the system by adding a non-wool to the mix.

a smartwool short sleeve baselayer shirt, or a cap 2 t shirt. either one will work, but if you're going to spend the cabbage for a wool zip top, I would keep my baselayer wool as well

New go to top

I'm 6'3" medium build and the large fits perfectly. This is my first Smartwool piece of clothing and it's become my new favourite top. It's light but a lot warmer than it's lack of bulk would suggest. it's not skin tight like thermal layering but it's also not loose like a jacket. You could wear it with nothing underneath but I usually wear it with a cotton t-shirt underneath. Very versatile, I use it as an everyday top but I'll also use it as a layer under a ski jacket on cold days. You could also use it as a running top on really cold days or for cross-country skiing. I bought the blue and it looks great. I'm also going to buy the dark lime.
