SmartWool PhD Outdoor Light Mini Sock - 2008 BCS
Ditch those mangy cotton things, and pull on a pair of the Smartwool PhD Outdoor Light Mini Socks. This warm-weather sock gives you the comfort and breathability you need for long days of trail running, mountain biking, or hiking in the warmer months. Smartwool lined the sock with Merino wool for moisture and odor control, and added cushioning in the toe box and heel sections for added comfort. Strategically placed mesh zones keep your feet breathing as you burn down the trail.

First, Backcountry is terrific. Have bought a number of items from them recently. Shipped very fast. Their returns policy is really good and credit given exceptionally fast.
As for the socks, I use them for tennis in hot weather. Wick very well and provide major cushioning without bulk. Best socks I have used in this size.

I wasn't going to review these socks, because who really needs a sock review, right? However, these socks, the SmartWool PhD Outdoor Ultra Light Mini Sock, and the Teko Merino socks are my go-to socks for workouts, hiking, backpacking, and hanging out. They have never failed me, and I am able to use them for multi-day trips without changing them. I just wanted to pass on my satisfaction with these. I haven't had the durability issues others have, but your mileage may vary. I would recommend them.
what size are these? There isn't a size listed anywhere.

270+ miles later...

they held up well. Smelly and dirty though, had to retire them. Served me well.

I use these socks in warmer conditions and they keep my feet cool and blister free. There is cushioning not usually found in lightweight socks that help protect your feet. Mine have held up well but they are starting to show some wear. I will gladly trade a little wear for all day comfort.
Blister-Free, but short life

Since using this sock, I can only think of one time that I got a blister and that was my own fault for wearing gore-tex running shoes in 95 degree weather for 50 miles. They keep my feet dry, while trail running up here in the wet, muddy Northwest.
The downside is their life span being wool. I can usually only get 100-150 miles out of a pair before they start wearing thin. For their price they should last longer.
Nice snug fit, I bought the size small for men's 8.5 shoe size.
tall enough for a mid hiking boot?
tall enough for a mid hiking boot?

probably. I have worn mine with mid boots (sportivas)

Most mid boots go above the ankle bone, so the cuff of the boot may be above the sock. I would lean toward a "crew" height sock for mid height boots.

which boot specifically? This sock will work with most mid boots.

Favorite Warm Weather Sock
July 18, 2012
These are my go-to socks in the warmer months, I own 4 pairs and replace them with new ones when get worn out (every 1-2 years). I love how much cushion they have and that they don't slip or slide in your boot/shoe when your feet start to sweat after hiking or working all day. It forms to your foot almost too perfectly so you don't have any "loose" parts that will cause trouble.
Top notch socks

Used these in a two-week 120-ish mile Alps trek, going 3000ft up 3000ft down almost daily. I iterated these with REI wool socks and both held up very well. My feet always felt dry and comfortable both in hot weather approaching 100F and in (not so) cold, around 45F trekking on snow.

Very comfortable with my Vasque Breeze mids. Like all Smartwool products, great quality and wear like iron.
hi there-for some reason the size chart isn't working on
hi there-for some reason the size chart isn't working on my computer. I am going to Kenya and need some light weight hiking socks and these look great. If I am a 9-to a 9 1/2, what size would I be?

Hey Elizabeth... if you are 9 - 9 1/2, get the mediums.

Best socks ever!

Best socks for outdoor activities, they don't stink if you wear them camping a few days in a row, soft and cushioned underfoot, they breath well and the low friction means less blisters. I have been replacing all my summer socks with these, picking up a pair or two when ordering other items.

If you've never bought a pair, you're probably looking at the price like "yeah right" that's what I thought too. Buy them, you won't regret it. Think about it like this, you can wear these socks for 3-4 days while hiking and they will not, slip, smell, rub, or get super stiff. So, basically, it's 3-4 pairs of cotton socks, that weigh as much as one pair of wool socks. Now it's starting to make sense? They hug your foot in all of the right places, allowing you to do what you do, without losing their grip on your feet.
Then there's the wool factor I already mentioned, wool wicks moisture, your feet will stay very dry for the amount of activity you put on them. If you accidentally soak them, they dry in a tenth of the time cotton does. Wool is odor resistant, it just doesn't stink after repeated use and interaction with sweat. If all of this sounds appealing to you and you do not yet own a pair of these, go buy them.
Side note: This specific pair is JUST long enough to fill you hiking boot. If you have a high top boot, I would recommend a little longer sock.
Smartwool is top notch

Comfortable, stink free and wicking. What more could you want from a sock? Smartwool delivers a great product, once again.

I have owned a few different pairs of merino wool socks. These are by far my favorite. Thick heel section increases the life. Warm, but still breathable for those long outings. would recommend to anyone.
Great sock when you don't need a full length hiking sock

Great addition to my sock drawer. When I'm wearing shorts for hiking in the summer, these get pulled out and I love wearing them all day long. Comfortable and helped keep blisters at bay in my new boots.
Very Good Running Sock
July 12, 2009
These wool socks feel great. Compared with other synthetic / wool blends, these are more comfortable. They're great on short and long runs, except when very warm out. I have them in every color!

My wife and I both got these socks because we anticipated a great deal of walking and a little hiking on our trip, which included the highlands of Scotland. Perhaps it's standard with a specialty sock like this, but from the moment I put it on, I knew this was not like the regular socks I usually wear. The fit and feel of it was remarkable, eliciting an "ooooh" upon first wear.
I don't know how many miles we walked with our Smartwool and Keens - pavement, cobblestones, rocks, hills and sand, but I loved these socks. I was able to hand wash them and they'd dry overnight for us. I had three pair, but could probably have managed with two if necessary.

These seem to be a cross between Smartwool regular hiking socks and the Adrenalins. The nice, snug fit of the adrenalins with the thicker padding at the toe and heel. Personally, they are too hot for where I live 11.5mos out of the year. I love the Adrenalin but could see going with the PHD for cooler hiking. I think you cant go wrong with these under that criteria.

I've used all types of socks, and these are by far the best. The short ones are more of my day by day use socks, and they are great. My full height ones lasted over 1,000 miles and are still working great. Most comfortable socks ever, and its great to pay $12 for a pair socks I will be able to replace whenever they start to wear out.
Keep in mind, smartwool has a lifetime guarantee, so if they ever do start to wear thin, they will replace them for free.

These socks are great, I use them for everyday summer and warm weather outings. The height is perfect for me, the never sag. The mesh on the sole is "cool" too.
I agree with will...
February 12, 2009
They are a great sock but they have a short life as most wool socks do. But as long as you have a Superfeet insert or something then they can last a while... I wear them with my North Face Prophecy running shoes and they work great...
September 18, 2009
Beside wearing smartwool socks everyday, I wore these socks over the 270 miles of the Long Trail, VT, this summer. I wore only one pair the entire trip (I did bring a back up pair) to test the durability of the socks. They held up incredibly well, and only wore through on the back due to the shoes I was wearing (Montrail Continental Divide, always chew up my socks). After 25 or so days without cleaning though, they did smell a bit, but it would be ridiculous to not expect that. I can't imagine wearing any other socks.
not a warm weather sock...
January 13, 2009
this sock, while extremely comfortable, is not exactly a thin warm weather sock. it is considerably thicker, and i often suffer from the problem of sweaty feet -- this sock is not helping. i am reserving it for colder days (although not snow, since it is an ankle sock.)
if you are looking for a cold weather short sock, it is probably ideal. also, sizing is about right. i am an 8.5, and i ordered medium. it just fits.

Really who doesn't love Smart wool socks that uses them?
