Even though the weather outside is raging, you'll feel like you're in the eye of the storm when you wear the Sierra Designs Men\222s Hurricane Jacket. This lightweight and highly compressible rain shell feature PVC-free seam tape to seal out moisture and underarm zip vents to dump heat when things get steamy.
Solvent-free PU membrane provides protection against rain and falling snow
DWR coating encourages water and melting snow to bead up on the fabric's surface without affecting the garments overall breathability
Fully taped seams mean water wont roll down the fabric and sneak in through the joints
Underarm vents lend airflow and increase evaporation when you work up a sweat
Center storm flap prevents rain from coming in through the front closure
It you want to wear only light layering underneath, then I think the Large will be fine. If you think you will see heavy layering under the jacket, probably step up to the XL. I'm 6ft 185, and wear a medium in this jacket.
I was curious about weight for this so I called Sierra designs about it. A medium weighs 15 oz. they told me. Just in case others were curious as well...
I purchased the jacket about a month ago and it was a great purchase. I picked it up for about $45 and to me that was worth it. I have taken it out in some light rain, and worn it while I kayak and it has kept me dry. Great jacket!
Had some problems with the zipper splitting on the underarm vents. Seems to be ok now. Fairly satisfied with the product. Functionality is great for the price

when i select electric blue it shows the under arm having a lighter blue part and the logo is white, but when i click on the electric blue image below it it doesnt have the under arm different coloration and the logo is grey. If i were to order it in electric blue would it come like the picture that pops up when i select it? is there someway i can have it ordered like the electric blue below the main image, without the lighter blue seam and white logo? the picture below is how i Want it, just to be clear.
I choose this jacket because it was inexpensive, and had pockets and a hood. This little jacket has exceeded my expectations. I love how compact it is. I keep it in the water bottle pocket of my bag. As a student in Boston, I never know when it may start raining, so its storability is super handy.
I recently wore this jacket to rugby practice, and when it started to rain, I threw it over my backpack. For two and a half hours, it poured. My backpack was dry as a bone.
This jacket is as practical, durable, and waterproof as ones three times the price.
I'm pretty sure you'll need the large so that torso and arm length are long enough. It will fit a little loose through the chest, but when you're tall and thin you're probably used to it.
got this for my PA AT trip good thing because Tropical storm lea came rolling in on day 3-5 jacket worked great kept me dry threw the down pours my lower arms where a little wet but that was probably from the pit zips that where open. Other than that light weight packs small. Im 5'6" 130lb and a small fits great
I got mine from the Sierra D outlet - obnoxious red was on clearance for $30! I was a bit hesitant about the loud color, but I've turned out to really love this jacket. I'm 6'3", 170lb and the medium works great for me, even with room for a fleece. It's super-light and has a stuff sack, so I can take it about anywhere. In moderately heavy rain with a heavy pack, I've seen the shoulders seep enough to turn dark red but not get me wet. 3 pockets are a plus, pit zips a must. Material feels sturdy, though not quite as much so as my buddy's mountain hardwear epic jacket. Highly recommended! Highly recommended

hey all! was interested in this jacket and wondering what other people have done about buying a stuff sack to put the jacket in? what size stuff sack have you used?
My wife just got the 2011 Marmot Precip and was showing me all the bell and whistles, when I realized my Hurricane had all the same things. I got my jacket last minute, and did not realize the quality I had. I am 5'11 and 170ish, and normally have a layer on underneath, and it fits super comfortably and keeps the rain out. Packs super small in its own bag, which can be doubled as a water resistant storage bag.

How may this jacket rate in a subtropical climate such as Hawaii where a deluge of rain could drop down any time of the year (bear in mind it can be moderate to insanely humid too)?
The se Jacket does the Work, it is super light and it packs in a super small bag that you can fold and keep in a pocket, it will protect you from the rain and it will dry super fast , it also have some zippers under your arm pit that allows air to flow freely, or just open the pockets for just some air to pass, the only problem that i see is that when exercising sweat can condense pretty fast but for the rest it is great it has a chest pocket that have a headphones access to the inside and it looks great!!
Is the lining of the jacket supposed to have blue patches on
Is the lining of the jacket supposed to have blue patches on the white? I'm not sure if the one I got was stained or not kind of weird, but weird enough to go to the trouble of sending it back?
First off,....what up? Anyway, this jacket is affordable and performs just how you need for a light weight and very packable jacket. Jackets below this range are cheaper but don't have the specs and their performance can't hang. The more expensive jackets are for the super serious hard core folks and the price could afford you a retired nasa space shuttle. If you're like me and need something that performs seriously but without going into the extreme performance range, or the extreme price range, then this is exactly what you need. Lots of protection, pockets, vents, stash bag, sinch cords mp3 pocket and convenience hidden hole, etc, etc, etc. Killer buy. DO IT!!!
Taylor is right that it doesn't have the highest of WP or Breathable ratings. But in NM (high desert) you shouldn't be running into any super colossal multi day rain storms. This jacket is more than enough to keep you dry during an afternoon T-storm and if you get hot, just open the vents and let some air in! The other bonus is that it's not going to break your bank at $66. I'm about your size and I wear an XL. It has plenty of room under it to layer if need be.
this jacket will be nice and light for runs but it may not be enough water protection. it only has 5k waterproofing and 5k breathability, so that wont do much to keep you dry and it wont breath that well either. i would get something that has more protection and a higher breathability rating to let the heat escape easier.
The Medium has a 34 sleeve and the large has 35 sleeve. You should fit into a Medium but if you want to layer under, I'd probably go with a Large. There is velcro on cuffs so you can cinch em down and keep the rain out.
this guy kept me bone dry during the maroon bells' monsoon season while doing the 4 pass loop, and for that I am grateful. i use this jacket far more often than i expected to, and believe it a great jacket for the price. the only complaints (and why 4 not 5 stars) is that the hood is quite small, and and DWR seems to be wearing off quickly. 6'2" 175 and the large fits well, maybe a bit baggy, but nice for layering underneath...
It doesn't claim "DWR" (durable water resistance), although from reading your review and those of others, it should. It claims waterproof. If it isn't waterproof, and can't maintain waterproofness for at least a year, it isn't telling the truth. It must be just a water resistant wind breaker. There are far too many of these false claims in the outdoor products market. We have to ignore what they claim and simply spend a lot of money, hoping our money can buy us safety from false claims. The product name is "Hurricane". Perhaps it should be "Significant Breeze".
First off, this is not a "bombproof" rain jacket. It's not your end-all be-all of waterproofness. That being said, for the price this is one of the best rain jackets you can buy. The features on this jacket are really dialed in: reinforced storm hood with plenty of room but not too big, longer backside to cover the butt, underarm zips to dump extra heat and humidity. It also packs small (smaller than a nalgene if you're good) and is lightweight, so there's no excuse to not bring it on your next trip. The fit is good too, I'm 5'10 145lbs and a medium fits well with room for layering. If you're in the rain all day then keep looking and spend a little more money. But for a lightweight insurance policy against sporadic storms and mountain wind, there's no better (or cheaper) jacket.
I have used this in a few rainstorms, nothing too serious, but it held up great. The construction quality is good, and I didn't notice any leaking on or around seams. The hood is a little big, but is probably great for use with a helmet. I am 6 foot 165 pounds. I went with a Large because I have abnormally long arms. The overal fit is a little baggier than I was hoping for, but the sleeve length is good. Drawstring around waist is nice and hand pockets are a good feature as well, without adding too much weight.
not very breathable, but i got it on s&c for a good price. worked fine thus far in light rain, but i don't see a problem with it working in a downpour, everything is sealed. Jacket's look surprised me, it looked a lot better than I thought it would. SIZING: I'm usually sort of inbetween medium and large sizes for everything. I'm a guy, 6 feet tall(exactly, without shoes), wingspan about 6-2. 175 pounds, and I got a Large, it's a perfect fit for me. So it's on the smaller side, sizing wise.
Hey Chris, Turn the pocket in the hood inside out and start stuffing the jacket in it. The mesh has a lot of stretch in it and you should be able to snap the pocket closed when you're done. Hope that helps.
