Shimano SH-R310 Custom Fit Men's Shoes - 2010 BCS

Item # SHI0233

Strap on the Shimano SH-R310 Shoes and stop losing all of your hard-earned pedal power to flex. The R310’s stiff carbon fiber outsole maximizes energy transfer from foot to pedal. Heat-moldable technology provides a dialed-in fit while an anatomical last increases comfort on those long rides. This Shimano shoe’s vented upper and honey comb mesh help keep your feet cool even when the competition heats up.

Bottom Line:

The strength of carbon in a lightweight design

Just got the new R310 (before any stores even have them) and right out of the box I'm super impressed. I've been riding Sidi Ergo 2's which are great for rides up to 4 hours, but on really long rides or races the slim fit takes over and I either have numbness or excruciating pain. I got these for the heat-moldable fit--took them out of the box for an 80 miler with 6000 vert. yesterday without even molding them and they were perfect. Light, great venting, good retention straps, and a distinctive look. Can't wait to get them molded and have a really custom fit.

Update: I got these molded (the process is more fun than a colonoscopy--they first mold the insole, then the whole show, then stick a huge baggie over your foot and vacuum-bag it so tight your toes tingle) and now these fit so incredibly well it's like you were born in them. It's been cool and wet in Utah lately so haven't been able to tell how well they vent (it's supposed to be one of the selling points) but otherwise it's a slam dunk. The soles do appear a little vulnerable--the carbon on the heel is exposed and the heel lift isn't as pronounced as on Sidi's, so trewad lightly if you're walking on them and use cleat covers if possible.

Shimano SH-R310 Cycling Shoes

By:

I have a smaller 'volume' foot, normal width and like a decent toe-box size like Keens. I wear a 42 in Sidi Ergo 2, 41 in Adidas and found I am BEST suited to a 41 in Shimano's 310 shoe. This after trying 42 and 41.5 sizes. The toe box is roomy, the thermoformed fit is nice. The cat-tongue heel gripper does work great. One thing is the tongue of the shoe is not long enough to cover where the shoe can dig in to the front of the ankle. If you are buying a pair, really tighten them up and see if they are going to bother you! My position compared to SIdi Ergo2 is Shimano is CLOSE, but needs a finite adjustment, like the dial mid-foot on the Sidi. Sidi's are also a bit more narrow in design than Shimano. I find as I ride and the shoe warms up/gets moist from sweat, that I can easily adjust the buckle and dial. I adjust a couple times before I get to my final 'locked-in' race ready setup. Sloppy shoes equals lost power, hot spots, and can be dangerous on knees and ankles with Repetitive Stress Syndrome. Sidi's replaceable heel bumper beats Shimano and is a bigger dimension too. Verdict - If you can get a DEAL on the Shimano's and they fit, go for it. If you must have the best of the best, Sidi is still top-dog.

A shoe to seriously consider

By:
September 12, 2009

I chose to buy these shoes after extensive research. I've tried so many brands including sidi, northwave, and Carnac. I was looking for a pair that had a rigid carbon sole, wide toebox, great ventilitation and could match all my outfits. Fortunately these shoes have it all, and them some. The custom fit option offered at my local Shimano dealer made all the difference in the world. They feel comfortable, provide excellent power transfer to pedals and even my custom orthotics fit in nicely. They are expensive, but you feel and see the technology involved. Highly recommended. Did I mention they look great.

No, those are SPD cleats for a two bolt mountain bike shoe. You'll want to use these SPD SL's http://www.realcyclist.com/shimano-spd-sl-cleat-sets
Enjoy!

Max comfort with a touch of bling

By:
September 10, 2010

I have problems with my toes going numb after a few hours in the saddle. The R310 felt amazing even before the custom heat molding. I rode in them for 100 miles before getting the molding done, and they're even better now.

The tightness of the straps is easy to adjust in the saddle. The extra wide main strap spreads the tension, and I've thrown myself at steep climbs without any perceivable stretching of the straps.

The mesh and sole vents provide lots of cooling, even through the worst of this summer's hot, humid days in Jersey.

I would never have chosen the bright silver color if there were other choices, but my wife likes the touch of bling.

Will it cost me more $ if I take it to a dealer to be custom fit? I would think it have to cost, since they did not profit in the sale.

You can take them to a local bike shop that is set up with the Custom Fit oven. There will be a charge as it requires labor, just call first to make an appointment.

The beauty of these shoes is that a lot of the time they are perfectly comfortable without a custom fit- right out of the box.

great shoe w/ one problem

By:
November 15, 2010

This is the best road shoe I have owned. It's important to get them molded - if you download the fitting instructions, even an experienced ski-boot fitter with an oven and vacuum should be able to do the job (that's how I had mine fitted). In almost two full race seasons, I have had no problems with discomfort, stretching or slipping. They fit just like the first day they were molded. They are light and very stiff (but no hot spots!). I have fairly wide flat feet.

One issue I have is the heel design - the rubber tread is in the wrong place, so you end up scraping the carbon fiber heel a lot. I am going to try to use glue or something to prevent it coming apart - I hope they fix this problem for future versions - because I will want to buy this shoe again.

Shimano SH-R310 Shoes

By:
February 15, 2011

These shoes are great, straight out of the box. I recently bought some, and the first day I put new cleats on, after changing from different shoes and pedal system, they felt as comfortable as if I had been wearing them for months. The thing that was most surprising to me when I first started to ride, was how amazingly stiff they are when putting the power through to the pedals.
They also look great, and I am getting heaps of comments on them; I have the black ones, whereas the white ones are much more common...

Here is a link to the Shimano dealer locator. When you use this make sure to select the "Custom Fit" check-box to show only those dealers that can fit your shoes.

Shimano SH-R310 Custom Fit Cycling Shoe

By:
February 5, 2011

These are great shoes and the sale price makes them a great deal. Like another reviewer I rode them for 2 or 3 weeks and they felt good but I finally had time to do the custom fitting and now they fit great. The custom fitting takes about 30 minutes. Not only do they do the insole but they mold the entire upper shoe as well. They fit like a glove. The straps are wide and easy to tighten. I had the straps molded into place so putting them on is automatic. Just takes a short pull. There are vents on the front and bottom of the shoe. The vents are great for warm weather but recommend waterproof shoe covers if you "train in the rain". My local dealer advised I bring them back in a few months for a free follow up fitting.
