These are as excellent - just like the reviews and marketing said, great support, good traction, light weight and bonus - they look good and fast. Fit just as good as all my other Salmon shoes, and true to size.

Which is better for me, Solomon XT Wings or XA PRO 3D: Planning an AT thru 2013, very heavy guy+ 45lb pack (need the weight to pack enuff food!), total 300lbs on feet but big shoe, size 13 to spread the load.
1: Need quick drying shoe, as they will get wet every day.
2: Need support.
3: Need durability.
Thanks for any advise.

For hiking with a pack, I would recommend one of Salomon's hiking shoes instead, especially for the load you'll be placing on them. The Wings Sky GTX 2 is the same chassis as the XT Wings except in a high-top boot. It will be more supportive, more durable, and be totally waterproof to your ankles. http://www.backcountry.com/salomon-wings-sky-gtx-hiking-boot-mens

Great shoes -on trails

By:
July 20, 2012

I have just restarted running at 55--these shoes are great on a trail-They feel a little soft to me running on hard surfaces. I wore them on an 11 mile 14 er hike and they were great for this-and they are spectacular at griping running down hill. A friend who had some felt the heels stuck out too far and could catch on rocks but I haven't felt this. My heels are a little sore but I think that it is from just getting back into the sport. The sale price mad them a great buy

Flat Feet

By:
July 10, 2012

I have very flat feet. After hours and hours of research I settled on these shoes. Unfortunately, they hurt my feet from the moment I put them on. I even purchased SuperFeet inserts to try to help...no luck. They shoes were very nice, just didn't work for my flat feet.

I found this version to be just slightly wider than previous ones. I have a narrowish foot and they are still fine for me, so probably size up unless you like 'em snug.

I have to disagree. I think you'll find pretty much consensus that Solomons run narrow. Not sure whether sizing up will give you a proper fit, however.

My experience, they are slightly wider than average. I never find myself needing to size up with Saloman where other shoes I typically need to.

Salomon changed the shoe color some

By:
June 21, 2012

See the attached photo as you'll actually be getting this shoe with the yellow laces and slightly different coloring in the side panel strips. However I actually like the changes so I'm keeping them.

As with just about all Salomon shoes I've owned they fit comfortably right out of the box. Looking forward to many happy miles in these. Thanks Backcountry for the awesome price and free 2 day shipping!

Salomon's are great shoes.

By:
May 30, 2012

The shoes are perfect straight out of the box. There was zero break in and they felt great. This is my second pair of Salomons in the past year. I have approximately 80 miles on these and they fit like new. I really like the quick lace system and they breathe very well. I completely trust this brand and will continue to buy them.

How's the sizing, is it true to fit or should I go up half a size? Also how well do these do on pavement, say a 5 mile run? Most trail shoes I've worn have been too stiff and painful to run on the asphalt and sidewalks.

I normally take a 43 1/3 (euro) or 9.5 (US) in most Salomon footwear. I was told by Backcountry.com that these run true-to-size, so I ordered my normal Salomon size. Regrettably I found Salomon XT Wings Trail Shoe to run 1/2 short. I would need a 10 (US). They don't have shoe on-sale in my size, so back they go.

I just got a pair and I found the size to be about 1/2 size small. I tried them on side by side with the XA Pros and found the sizing to be about 1/2 size different.

As far as running on the road, you would be fine, but the soft rubber soles would take some unnecessary wear.

My favorite shoes, but...

By:
October 15, 2011

I have the XT Wings (not 2) that I got off SAC for a screamin deal. Definitely my favorite pair of shoes that I own. Theyve got countless trail miles, some road, and tons of everyday and gym use. They can truly do anything.
They've been supportive, light, and nimble, but I hate to retire them for something as silly as breaking the lowest outside eyelit. I like them so much that I'm giving them 5 stars even though they ate through a pair of laces and broke an eyelit after a year and a half. It looks like the left shoe is about to do the same too. I decided to upgrade to the XR Crossmax Guidance because of the pronation control and reinforced eyelits, but I still use these shoes daily.

Excellent Everyday Shoe

By:
September 16, 2011

I mostly use these as everyday shoes (I have the Goretex version, too). They are extremely comfortable and supportive. The Salomon lacing system works amazingly well in terms of fitting the shoe snugly around all areas of the foot. This version has a slimmer fit than the GTX version; not quite as comfortable for my feet, but still excellent.

Love the shoes

By:
August 2, 2011

I was hooked on the Salomon XT Wings comfort since the first time I put them on. I'm 6'2" 185lb and found the shoes to be a good balance between some of the minimalist shoes on the market that felt like wooden dutch clogs and the moonboots I've seen others wearing at some of the local trail run races. Since purchasing the XT's I've put over 1,000 miles on them including the Speedgoat 50K trail run at Snowbird Ski Resort in Salt Lake City, UT this past weekend. After this much mileage on the shoes they're beat up...but to my amazement they actually held up thru the race. The race has some extreme conditions including nasty downhills on gravelly and rocky trails, running thru and down rivers, and negotiating some sweet glacial glissades. Due to the above average snow year, parts of the trails were actually rivers...and I had no blisters after running 31 miles in wet feet. For me these are the shoes of choice as long as Salomon doesn't mess to much with the design or price. Each of my pairs has ripped in the same place - up near the joint of my big toe...but other than that the shoes have held up well. Shoes run a bit small...I'm normally a 10.5 but wear an 11 in the salomons. Love the lacing system..quick to adjust. Given the stink that they've now accumulated, my wife has hidden them in the garage somewhere or I'd show you a picture. They stink, look nasty, and the entire toe box is about to rip thru...but after this many miles and hard pounding ultramarathons can't bring myself to give them up. Have another race this saturday and need to find a new pair of shoes and to be honest...I'm getting lost in all the Salomon derivatives of the original XT shoe and pricing seems to be skyrocketing. I love the shoes...hope I can find similar ones to purchase.

Hi, I am definitely an overpronator and suffer anterior compsrtment syndrome as a result. I've used salomom xt wings for the last 3 years for running on the road, trail and my army physical training sessions these shoes have proven to be the best i've owned. I still suffer occasionally from shin pain but far less than other dedicated running shoes( like brooks) i even did a 25 km charity run... no pain. I won't wear any other running shoe.

no more running scared

By:
June 24, 2011

Got 'em on Monday and have run them every day since, both trail and pavement. I've torn up one ankle badly and sprained the sh*t out of the other a few times, and these are the first shoes I've worn since my surgery (fifteen years ago) that really feel secure. I never thought I would be able to stop running scared. I love them. No twitches, no soreness. If your form is great, you're light-footed and secure, you might prefer a faster shoe with more feel (Speedcross in Salomon or S-Labs for the truly hard-core or deluded). But if you're a normal, beat-up guy who just wants to run, these just might be your sole-mates.

Bought these for mountain biking as they have a laceless system. Had them in all types of conditions ranging from heavy mud to being completely submerged, hose em off and toss em on the boot dryer and they look like new. Great support for everyday wear. Great grip for biking. All around great shoe. Next time I'm getting the gortex variety.

new love

By:
April 20, 2011

Haven't felt like this about a pair of running shoes since my first pair of Huaraches circa 1992. I believe these are better and I hope they last longer. Not sure I would want to take these on a serious mountain trail, they are real thin around the toes. Road running and cross country running seem to be a perfect fit. These breathe awesomely, on take off I had the sensation of little fans blowing on my feet with every stride. I think the boys and girls of Salomon broke into my place while I was sleeping and took my measurements the night I ordered these, perfect fit. I generally wear a 9.5 or 10 depending upon the brand, 10s were right on. Great traction better than the XA PRO 3D ULTRA and they don't feel flat like the ULTRAs.

I will be picking up the Gortex version of these for cold/wet weather running.

Too Comfortable not to buy

By:
January 3, 2011

I had switched away from Salomon trail runners looking for something with at sole that would last longer. After going through a pair of a pair of Merrell's and a pair of Montrail's which lasted a bit longer, I'm back to the Salomon. Simple fact is, I haven't found a trail runner out there that is more comfortable and supportive than these.

Best Salomon Sneaker

By:

I also have had a couple pair of XA 3D Pros, but these are better in fit, traction, and support. These are the best sneaker I've owned. Great for backpacking, running, casual, and anything. I am getting a GTX pair to compliment my breathable pair for trail running, apres ski, and mucking around in the rain. All my sneaks are Salomons and these are their best! Forget tying muddy, frozen laces and buy these babies!

Awesome!

By:
December 5, 2010

Hardcore trail running demands hardcore gear. These shoes are all they claimed to be and a whole lot more. Out of the box I took them on a easy 7 miler and couldn't believe how comfortable they were. A few days later we were back on the trails for a hard 3 hours (guessing 20-22 miles, my darn GPS shot craps early in the run) and I am happy to report that not only did I not have any issues on the run I felt zero after effects that evening or the next morning. Stable, wraps the foot and light weight. Buy these bad boys and go get you some dirt!

ATV for the Feet

By:
November 10, 2010

A flexible and supportive shoe with ample cushioning. They are light, comfortable and breathe well. The forefoot is just thin enough to feel the trail and may let an occasional stinger through. For me they fit true to size. I typically wear Asics and made the transition without any issues. Overall they have a similar ride, but this is a slightly beefier shoe. They have a soft upper that is more supportive than the Asics The lacing system works fine and is highly adjustable allowing a semi-customizable fit. It has little benefit over traditional lacing in my book, but it works. The out sole has performed well on wet rocky Pennsylvania trails.

Best Road/Trailrunner hybrid

By:
March 22, 2010

I needed something that could be a good hybrid between road shoes and trailrunners, and this is perfect for that. Provides enough lateral support and rigidity for the trail, but also light enough for the road. Fits true to size for me (for reference, I wear 10 in Nike's, 9.5 in Adidas, 9.5 in everything else including Salomon). Great update to a classic running shoe.
