Never go to the the mountain without it. These are really pretty cheap as far as armor goes. They provide good, full coverage and are fairly breathable. The spine protector is removable, although I don't know why you would ever want to take it off. It would be nice if you could strap on the spine protector without the rest of the armor. This has a tendency to ride up a bit on my waist too.
