i really want this bar! the one I'm using now is a 44cm, will a 40cm really make a difference?

yeah, that's a huge difference. the bars should be roughly the width of your shoulders (wider for 'cross). If you're comfortable with 44cm, I'd highly recommend looking elsewhere.
