I thought that Kryptonite replaced a bunch of u-locks because of the tubular lock... is this any safer than those that were easily broken into with a plastic bic pen barrel?

Kryptonite after being purchased by Ingersol Rand, changed their key way to avoid a licensing fee. Tubular keys with .360" and .370" key ways are still hard to pick. It is in fact the .340" key way with few differences in cut depth that made many of the newer tubular kryptonite locks easy to pick.
