I have a mens xl shell and my zip in fleece liner was lost on a trip. Will this or any other fleece liner fit? how do I know? do i measure the zipper length? I bought it too long ago to remember what the name of it was. thanks for any assistance.

your best bet for a zip-in interchange jkt is the Ten Trails. there are many others that are 3-point compatible (sleeve, neck, and sleeve secured)

I have found that shells and components/liners tend to only work within the same brand, and even then that's not always the case. I'm sure there are some out there that will work cross brand that I haven't found yet. That being said, your best bet will be to try to find one of the same brand and match it that way.
