Mad Rock R3 Crash Pad

August 16, 2012

I got the pad today. Apparently, they have been switching foam manufacturers and materials from time to time. The one I got is VERY HEAVY. I haven't had a chance to weight it -- my guess -- 45 + lb. It does have what looks to be an especially well designed harness for a crash pad. I guess you need a good harness to haul something SO heavy. Can someone recommend a good pad that is lighter than this? I

Patagonia Rock Guide Pant - Women's

July 7, 2012

Waist is very big. Rise is probably a bit below natural waist but they are by no means "low riders". I bought size 0 (5'5" 110 lbs). These pants might fit well if you are as big around the waist as the hips. I had them taken in through the back seam as much as possible. This is limited due to the back zip pockets. They are currently in the good will bin. Just not going to work. They really "give"...stretch out after a few minutes of wearing. Don't buy them unless they feel tight!

May 8, 2012

Probably not...unless you are very slight build. I am a fan of Mountain Hardwear bags because they are very trim. I am about 5'5" and 110 lbs, 31 inches around the chest. I buy the regular and there is not much extra room. This bag is MUCH smaller through the shoulders than the men's equivalent...much smaller! If you are 5'9" and less than say 130 lbs...perhaps the long would work. It weighs less because it is SMALLER!

Mountain Hardwear Cohesion Stretch Jacket - Women's

March 24, 2012

Not suitable for cold winter climes. The cold wind will come through this. Mediterranean winters, maybe. Sleek cut with stretch. Not cut well for heavy layers underneath. Fitted mid weight fleece and fitted down sweater vest max. This is primarily a cool weather rain jacket. For cold weather shells, look for 3 layer Goretex or similar. They will likely weigh nearly twice as much as this.

If on the edge, UP! Mountain Hardwear women's stuff is much sleeker fit than most outdoor brands. Usually, plenty of room through the shoulders and upper back but tapers quite slim to the waist. 5'5", 112 lbs, 32B -- usually buy XS in MH. To layer more than a mid weight fleece and down sweater vest, probably a S.

Mountain Hardwear Cohesion Stretch Jacket - Women's

March 24, 2012

5'5" 112 lbs, 32B. Got XS. If I wanted to layer more than a mid weight fleece or something with a hood, a small might be better. I think you would describe this as hitting at the hip. The XS hits me a good bit below the waist. Don't expect "butt coverage", at least not in an XS, unless you are under 5'. It is cut slim but with good room through the shoulders and upper back. Mountain Hardwear women's stuff tends to run a bit smaller than most outdoor brands. Slimmer cuter lines. Compared with similar products, I would not call this jacket short...or long. The Stretch cohesion pants rock too. Very fitted compared with similar pants with an attached clip belt. I got the XS and they are none too big. Rain pants that look good? Yes.

Stoic eVent Stash Shell - Women's

Stoic eVent Stash Shell - Women's

Rating for this product: 4 March 24, 2012

Stoic women's jackets run a bit smaller than other brands. However, this stoic jacket runs smaller than most Stoic jackets. 5'5" 112 lbs, 32B . Usually an XS in Stoic jackets. XS in this particular jacket would probably only accommodate a thin T shirt and would probably be constricting at that. I went for the Small and it is still not terribly roomy. If I wanted to layer a mid weight long underwear top and a down sweater hoody, I might even be inclined to go for a medium. This particular piece runs SMALL! No pit zips. Event is supposed to breathe better than Gore-tex. I shall see ;)

Thanks, I ordered one last year and there was no mesh window. I returned it. It seems like you have to choose between mesh and "waterproof" unless you want a hoop. Black Diamond Ultra Distance Trekking Pole

July 5, 2011

I am about 5'5" female with about a 30.5 inseam (not that this is really relevant but just to stress I'm not long legged). I first got the 100's and they were really short. I now have the 110. The 110's are still greater than the 100 degree angle indicated in the instructions. Of course, pole length is somewhat a matter of preference! I am debating whether to give the 120's a go. I suspect that the sizing is going to leave a lot of taller people out! BTW, I like my walking sticks quite a bit longer than ski poles! The skiing stance involves flexion of a number of joints. You are shorter skiing than walking :)

Mountain Hardwear Canyon Shirt - Long-Sleeve - Women's

Rating for this product: 4 September 10, 2010

Tiny but cute fit. 5'5 1/2", 112 lbs, 32 in bust. Cut short -- very slightly below navel. Almost a petite cut and I'm not "petite". Ordered size 2. Still deciding. Might order up a size on this one. Stretch mesh panels under arms. Large mesh zip pocket on left boob -- not sure what it would look like with stuff in it -- LOL. Not sure what the "Napolean" pocket in the description refers to but mine ("air" color) does not seem to have a pocket on the back. Good shoulder freedom in such a trim shirt. Have a feeling this would be nice and smooth under pack -- I've never worn this sort of button down with a pack, usually wearing light weight wool knits in summer.

FYI, finding a lot of the Mountain Hardwear girl stuff is running a bit smaller, trimmer, lower waist, etc. lately -- CUTER -- than most brands. Welcome change :)

It is a sleek good looking pant. They waist is not adjustable -- can not really tighten it. Though the material gives, there is not really any elastic around the waist. The sleek fit is achieved by the asymmetrical zip. I don't think much alteration would be satisfactory. If this pant fits, it seems like an awesome choice!

A week of food? As a very general rule, food comes to about 1kg (2.2lbs)/person/day. 7days x 2.2lbs = 15.4 lbs. I have a friend who hardly takes any food on such a trip in order to diet and come home 10lbs lighter. How much water will you need to carry -- 1L=2.2lbs? I am 5'5" and 110. Have the same concerns as you! 59L should be plenty of volume. I think to get the weight down to 25 lbs, you might have to ditch the cooker, mat, and live off very calorie dense energy bars, bring a tarp instead of tent, etc. I sleep cold and need a bag down to 0F to handle freezing temps. I recently did a weeklong winter trip starting with over 50lbs -- though I did have snowshoes = 4lbs. Also remember the old adage that a pound on the feet = 5 lbs in the pack.

Bad falls can cause injuries, no doubt. Different boots and different fits can put your foot in a different position and change how the forces are going to affect your anatomy. I don't think it's very predictable though. I agree, bad luck. Hope you get better soon!

Scarpa T2 Lady Telemark Ski Boot - Women's

March 30, 2009

I am a US women's 7 (37.5) in street shoes. I have a low volume foot. I tried the 22.5 (in scarpa same shell size as 23!) and they are too small. I'm a downsizer so I wanted them to fit. I went up a shell size to the 23.5 (same shell as 24, apparently scarpa is different than some boot makers) and I think it will work.

Great 40F bag

Mountain Hardwear Lamina 20 Sleeping Bag: 20 Degree Synthetic

Mountain Hardwear Lamina 20 Sleeping Bag: 20 Degree Synthetic

Rating for this product: 4 March 25, 2009

Used this in Patagonia in the Summer -- damp with temperatures down to around freezing. Wore quite a bit under it when sleeping in my tent -- leggings, thick socks, sweater down vest. But I sleep cold! Very comfortable in huts -- maybe around 50F. Maintained loft quite well in damp conditions. I would probably have gone with the next heaviest version for this trip, though. This is probably more ideal for 40F if you are a cold girl.

Scarpa Diva Alpine Touring Boot - Women's

March 22, 2009

I am 37 - 37.5 in street shoes (USA W7) with long volume foot though not terribly narrow in the forefoot, narrowish heel and slimmish leg. I ordered the Scarpa Domino in a 22.5 which was too small. I ended up ordering the 23.5. Keep in mind that in Scarpa, the 22.5 and 23.0 are the same size shell. Same with 23.5 and 24.0, etc. (This is different than many boot makers.) My guess is you would want a 22.5/23.0 (they are the same shell size). I tend to downsize a bit. IMO, the charts are useless! My impression is that scarpa runs a tad small. Respect the snow gods!

Patagonia R2 Fleece Jacket - Women's

December 26, 2008

i have a couple of these jackets -- they do them each year. i buy an XS and i am about 5'5" and 112lbs and a 32B with solid shoulders and arms-- i'm not petite. I like the fit. it has those diagonal arm seams which make it easy to move. I don't think it would be uncomfortably tight. it is a loosely woven fleece that has a lot of give. r2 is a fairly lightweight jacket and definitely not the least bit windproof if that's what you are looking for. it's a great layering piece and yes, it looks good. i agree with the comments about the zipper.

Not for pecs and lats!

Patagonia Active Sport High Impact Bra - Women's

Patagonia Active Sport High Impact Bra - Women's

Rating for this product: 1 September 26, 2008

The patagonia body line is awesome. However, I found this newish style a bummer. I am a 32B, 5'5" 112 lbs. This bra is not "lat friendly". It is a pullover racerback with big sliding metal strap adjusters that dig in. It is not padded but has has double layer material and POUCHES that are placed quite closed together. The "neck line" sort of gaps. NOT for the athletic build. If your boobs are in the exact right place (quite close together) and you have virtually nothing in the way of pecs or lats, you might be OK. The fabric won't adjust to your figure like some sports bras (the pouches will not disappear). If your boobs are shaped and spaced like the photo, great. Of course, patagonia 100% guarentees everything as does backcountry.

Great Regular Bra

Patagonia Active Barely Bra A/B - Women's

Patagonia Active Barely Bra A/B - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 September 26, 2008

Accurately called "Barely bra". NOT a sports bra -- not even close.

But wonderfully comfortable and flattering under tight tanks and Ts for casual/work. This not a stand alone bra!

Backpackers beware, there are metal adjusters -- they used to hit right on the collarbone. The new model has the adjusters on the back going up from the band so probably not as much of an issue but something to keep in mind.

Also, would make a cute training bra if chest size 32 or above.

(XS -- 32B, 5'5" 112 lbs.)
