Great Trainer for Downtime

Black Diamond Forearm Trainer

Black Diamond Forearm Trainer

Rating for this product: 5 April 20, 2012

For it's cost, you can't beat this thing. I use it at work and in the car for a good pump. I either do reps or time- diamond intervals 30 seconds on, 30 seconds off... 40 seconds on, 40 seconds off... up and back down again. The only thing that's hard to do is opposition training where you are flexing your hands and fingers outward. You can put your fingers inside the ring to do that if they are small enough, but I'd highly suggest doing finger extension exercises in a bowl of rice (you can find vids on this) to prevent injury.

Liberty Bottle Works Audrey Kranz Water Bottle - 32oz

For the bike question - Even if it did fit, it would certainly be annoying rattling in there if it didn't fit perfectly tight. Go with one of the insulated camelbak bottles instead. They are smaller in diameter than a Nalgene and might fit into the side water bottle holder of the Stratos.

Armada JJ Ski

March 30, 2012

I'd go with the shorter ski for now. I think at that length, even though you'll grow, it might be too much ski at this point. I am 5'7 and 145 and ski high 170s. The trend nowadays seems to go shorter than what I ski, but it's comfortable for an advanced skiier. That being said, your weight might mean that ski at 185 is just a tad much. Plus, unless you are just doing big lines, in the trees or in tight situations, it's best to have a shorter ski you can quickly turn on edge.

La Sportiva Quantum Trail running Shoe - Men's

March 30, 2012

I disagree with the comments that it doesn't have traction. If you're talking a wet root or wood, I don't know a single shoe out there that would grip that so those complainers need to shut it. These shoes grip rocks and dirt well- even in wet conditions. I'd suggest these for running and as an approach shoe as well.

Sterling Evolution Velocity Bicolor Dry Rope - 9.8mm

Sterling Evolution Velocity Bicolor Dry Rope - 9.8mm

Rating for this product: 5 March 28, 2012

This rope seems to be everything that I want in a rope. The only thing that remains to be seen is durability.
-great cool bi-color
-nice and lightweight
-perfect feel- seems thinner than it is
-doesn't get tangled at all

My only complaint is that in its short life, it seems to pick up dirt rather quickly even though I use a tarp.

Sterling Fusion Nano DryCore Cimbing Rope - 9.2mm

Sterling Fusion Nano DryCore Cimbing Rope - 9.2mm

Rating for this product: 4 March 26, 2012

After initial impressions, this rope definitely held up to the abuse of a weekend warrior sport climber in Boulder, CO. Granted, I've gotten more into trad lately, but I think that if you're reasonably nice to this rope, you will see it go a long way. It went through trips to Red Rocks, trad in Eldo, and tons of trips up into Boulder Canyon.
Pros:
-nice feel
-strong, durable, and held up to abuse
-great to fall on with a nice dynamic elongation
-light even at 70m
-if immediately straightened, this rope will not tangle often at all

Cons:
-picks up dirt/grime easily so definitely use a tarp whenever possible
-for toproping, this will not be your rope- too much static elongation and frustrating to climb back up 5 feet that you just did unless your belayer is keeping you VERY tight

Overall, I would suggest this rope for those looking to break into harder sport grades. It's light and reliable. If you or your friends will be doing top-rope or tradding, this is probably too thin and will have too much static elongation for you. Great rope that I would suggest to most. As this rope's life was coming to an end, a buddy was playing around and went over a sharp ledge and almost completely cut the rope. It took a nice core shot toward the end, so I cut it shorter while my I decided on my next rope. It will be the slightly wider Sterling Evolution Velocity bicolor...

Osprey Packs Aether 60 Backpack - 3500-3900cu in

Rating for this product: 5 March 23, 2012

I love this pack. It's comfortable and fits nicely. It seems airy on the back, but I still sweat in the warmer months. As I have the most gear, I usually end up carrying a heavier pack than my friends. This doesn't seem to matter as there aren't any hot points on my back or sides. Solid pack- Osprey never seems to disappoint.

Dynafit TLT Radical FT Binding

March 22, 2012

Granted, I am much smaller, but I ski hard, have hit some big drops and big things underfoot in these things. At a DIN setting a bit higher than I would put my in bounds skis at, I haven't ever popped out in a strange spot. I generally ski fast in the trees and have hit some unmovable objects and not popped out when I thought I perhaps would. Frankly, I love how light these are and would get all dynafit bindings for my entire quiver if I had the cash. My biggest skis (BD Amperage) are my lightest with these things. I can't say enough about them skiing fast and hard.

Smith I/OS Interchangeable Optic Goggle

Rating for this product: 5 March 19, 2012

I can't say enough about this goggle. I've skied with these for the past two seasons, and had nothing but good experiences with them.
Pros
-tough, and rugged lenses - I've put these through the ringer with flying through small trees and even though they will scratch, it's barely noticeable when you have them on
-very fast and easy to interchange lenses
-fit nice and comfy on my face and work perfectly with the Variant helmet also from Smith
-no fogging whatsoever EVER - the only weather that has affected these was freezing rain, which would affect every goggle lens
-stylish and functional with multiple lenses that will not only suit the conditions but get heads to turn
CONS
-on the pricey side, but worth every penny imo
-make sure you take your goggles off your helmet when in storage - the strap will stretch out quite a bit if you do not

The best goggle I've owned by far. Can't really imagine a better goggle.

Suunto Foot POD Mini

March 2, 2012

An ex-g/f had this and also bought the foot pod clip (which I don't think is included here. She just laced it in. Sure, it can be annoying to do over and over again, but it's only an extra few seconds of work before a run. Pros
- A perfect size for backcountry day trips with ample space for food, camera, gear, and water pouch
- well designed openings
- sturdy and has held up so far
- comfortable with weight added
- a nice bright color for added visibility

Cons
-the rolltop closure is a bit awkward, and can be annoying at times
-no padded belt
-no divider for avy gear

I have two pairs of the Mantras in 170s and 177s, and they just rock. I feel like they can do everything very well. I'd give them a solid 9 out of ten on hardpack, nicely groomed, trees, and moguls. Either this or the BD Ascension skins would be great.

It doesn't seem like they carry it, but I am sure Primus would carry it or be able to help you if you called customer service.

Volkl Kendo Ski

January 30, 2012

Man, I would definitely not go with the 170s. I ski a similar ski in the Mantras and have two pair - 170s and 177s. I can barely ski the 170s because they feel like rollerblades now. This type of stiff ski tends to ski shorter, and at your height and weight you should be skiing at least 177s at any rate. I am 5'7, 145 and I wouldn't even ponder anything shorter than 175s now. Step up to the 177s and you won't be disappointed after a few days on the slopes.

Hestra Seth Morrison Pro 3-Finger Glove

January 27, 2012

I have these and I love them, but on colder days they aren't enough. Does anyone wear and suggest a liner with these? Thanks!

Mountain Hardwear Snowpocalypse Jacket - Men's

January 27, 2012

I say why not? I've seen people in the reverse of that color scheme and it works. Plus, you're very noticeable in bounds!

Great Jacket

Mountain Hardwear Victorio Jacket - Men's

Mountain Hardwear Victorio Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 January 27, 2012

I snagged this at the beginning of the ski year, and it has been a great addition. In both the backcountry and on the resort hills, it's been a great performer. I'd agree with other commenters that it does breathe well when the weather is warmer or if you are skinning up. It's seen some nasty trips through tight trees, and while I am disappointed with the durability of my North Face ski pants, this thing has come out unscathed. I got a color that stands out that is currently unavailable from backcountry.com in the green/lime color. I like this color a lot as it isn't a popular one, and makes me easy to pick out in a crowd. Lastly, I've been impressed with the water proof treatment and taped seams. Bonus points: If you are a fan of Hestra gloves, the tighter than usual wrist cuffs integrate nicely with all Hestra gloves I have.

K2 BrightSide Ski - Women's

January 26, 2012

I'd go with the 125mm as the tip and tail are super wide on these. Plus, the 110mm skins are the same price so you might as well go with the wider one in the 125s. Have fun!

Smith I/OS Interchangeable Optic Goggle

January 26, 2012

I have the Smith I/O and I can't imagine how these could let in that much air as it is a similar design. I'd check to see that all of the tabs are properly affixed to the lens and there aren't any holes essentially in the mix. With the I/O, I've skied over 60 mph without any eye watering.

Dynafit TLT Radical FT Binding

January 26, 2012

I have the BD Amperage with these bindings, and I am very happy with how they perform on the way up. I don't fully understand how the ski could flex that much side to side, but I have never had any issues traversing steep slopes in these.

Arc'teryx Crossbow Jacket - Men's

January 26, 2012

most of the arcteryx jackets have the same fit, and looking at the rush and this one, they definitely have a similar fit. i'd have a gander at the sizing chart on their website just to make sure that wasn't a fluke though.

Osprey Packs Waypoint 85 Backpack - Women's - 5004-5187cu in

January 26, 2012

hard to say, but i'd guess it would depend on what you put into it. usually though, osprey is very comfortable no matter what weight is inside. i'd say you'd be fine if you're fairly active and used to carrying a good amount of weight. this is definitely a ton of space.
