Great Boots! Wish they were more durable!

KEEN Targhee ll Mid Hiking Boot - Men's

KEEN Targhee ll Mid Hiking Boot - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 January 7, 2010

These boots feel great the day you take them out of the box! No need to break them in! I took them to Ecuador and immediately climbed a 15,000 ft peak with no blisters or hotspots. Keep in mind these are great "trail" boots, but don't really provide support for heavier backpacking loads. The only downside, as others have stated, is the durability of the boot. This is my 3rd pair and the other 2 broke down in under a year. Typically the main issue I have is the rubber soles separating from the bottom of the boot. If you catch it early, you can throw some shoe goo on it and slow down the damage. Either way, they should last longer! The only reason I keep buying them is because they are so comfortable! If you can get past the durability issues, these are a must buy!

Tested to -12F...I'm alive!

Mountain Hardwear Lyell -15 Sleeping Bag: -15 Degree Down

Mountain Hardwear Lyell -15 Sleeping Bag: -15 Degree Down

Rating for this product: 5 December 29, 2009

This has been a great sleeping bag for winter camping! I took this out on one of the coldest days of the year in McCall Idaho. I set up my tent in the middle of the lake on a patch of ice and hunkered down. The low temp that night was -12F and I slept comfortably through the night! I matched this bag with a good thick sleeping pad, and some North Face Tent Booties to keep my feet warm.

The face gasket is very functional and allows for easy breathing. I tend to turn alot during the night, but didn't run into any issues getting the hood/gasket adjusted. The cords are easy accessible and you can cinch them down quite nicely around your face. (very useful for keeping the heat in)

I haven't had any issues with the zipper so far. Compared to other sleeping bags I have, this one is very smooth and rarely ever catches.

So far, I am very happy with my purchase and would suggest this bag to anyone else looking for a good winter sleeping bag!

Tons of great uses for these booties! Want warm feet, get these!

The North Face NSE Tent Bootie II - Men's

The North Face NSE Tent Bootie II - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 January 30, 2009

I love these Booties! I purchased them with the intent to use while winter camping. Over the last few years, I have found many other uses for them. First, when winter camping, if it gets really cold, I will wear these overnight in my sleeping bag. No more cold feet! When spending the night in backcountry yurts, having these available for late night runs to the toilet (through the snow) is great! While other campers spend several minutes putting their snow boots on, I just slip these on and I'm out the door. Haven't had any issue with getting them wet. My feet seem to stay perfectly dry when trudging through the snow. Next use...after a hard day of skiing, these are perfect to wear during the drive home. You can also use these as "house slippers" if you have drafty hard wood floors. Just be a bit careful because the bottom isn't exactly what I would call grippy. Another warning...these things can get a bit stinky after some extended wear. I found that a quick hand washing takes care of that in a flash! They are true to size for me (medium fit perfect for size 8.5-9 foot). A must buy for anyone who enjoys winter activities and warm feet!

Metolius PAS Personal Anchor System w/ Element Locking Carabiner

Metolius PAS Personal Anchor System w/ Element Locking Carabiner

Rating for this product: 5 January 12, 2009

By far the best personal anchor system you can have attached to your harness! The method to lengthen or shorten the PAS when at the bolts couldn't be simpler. You get maximum protection no matter which loop you are attached to. Add to that the ability to use as an equalizer and you can't go wrong! Throw away your daisy chain and go with this PAS!

I got what I paid for...

Highgear TerraTech Altimeter Watch

Highgear TerraTech Altimeter Watch

Rating for this product: 3 January 12, 2009

I have had this watch for about a year now. The main purpose for buying this watch was to assist in tracking altitude during long climbs and ski trips. As others have stated, you must calibrate the watch frequently which is a pain in the arse. Not so bad if you are at a place where you can verify the altitude. No so good if you are on a week long expedition and don't have a calibration point. I also didn't like the fact that it looks like I am wearing a wall clock on my wrist. This thing is HUGE! I still get jokes from climbing buddies standing 20 ft away saying "Hey, hold up your wrist so I can see what time it is"! If you can get past the huge size, and the constant need for calibration, you will probably be fine with this altimeter.

Great set of stoppers!

Black Diamond Stopper Set #4-13

Black Diamond Stopper Set #4-13

Rating for this product: 5 January 7, 2009

This is a very useful set of stoppers! I have taken falls on the smaller sizes and they are bomber! (Like other small nuts/stoppers, you may leave a few in the rock after taking a fall) I keep 2 sets on my rack along with the smaller 1-3 sizes. The color coding is nice when you are hunting for a specific size. Make sure you have a good nut tool to help clean these from the rock!

Perfect Winter Activities Jacket!

Mountain Hardwear Alchemy Softshell Jacket - Men's

Mountain Hardwear Alchemy Softshell Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 November 7, 2008

This is one of my main go to jackets for winter activities. It is perfect for snowshoeing, hiking, climbing when the weather is in the 30-40's. On colder days (and for skiing) I use my Mountain Hardware shell over the Alchemy for a nice warm combo. The wind protection is great, and it even does a very good job at keeping water/moisture out. The cuff design is great and very comfortable with light gloves. Fit is a bit snug, so go a size larger if you are in between sizes.

I expect more out of Asolo!

Asolo Fugitive Gore-Tex Boot - Men's

Asolo Fugitive Gore-Tex Boot - Men's

Rating for this product: 2 April 21, 2006

Nothing but problems with multiple pairs. I started with a pair of these boots from REWhy. The first time on they were very comfortable and I was excited to get such a high quality boot. After purchasing and with a bit more inspection I found that the Gore-Tex lining on the heal had a large amount of extra material that caused a crease. This crease dug into my heal and caused blisters on the first day (break-in at the office, no hiking). Obvious flaw. I took that pair back and they ordered another pair. Ten days later I received the new boots and they had the same issue. Extra Gore-Tex causing large creases in the lining. This time on the other boot. Again I traded them in and ordered another pair. Over ten days later I got a third pair. (Yes, I am getting very frustrated by this point). The third pair had an even larger crease in them near the toe. I figured that maybe I should just wear them for a few weeks to see if this crease would go away. No such luck. With all the extra Gore-Tex material in the lining, it creates large friction points in the boot. I took that pair back again and got a refund. I visited another outdoor store thinking that REI maybe had a bad batch. I purchased the same boot in a different color. The newest pair was very comfortable and didn't seem to have the lining issue. After wearing the latest pair for about two weeks the Gore-Tex lining is now releasing from the bottom of the boot. This is actually the second pair that has had this same issue. The lining pulls up and you can feel it "squishing" each step. This is just on one boot. To say the least I have been very disappointed in this boot and in Asolo. I wish they would go back to making their boots in Italy and leave the Bangladesh/China manufacturing to things like computer parts and toys. For what it's worth, I have heard several people praise these boots...I guess that is why I was willing to give them so many attempts. This latest attempt has frustrated me to the point where I will no longer purchase Asolo boots. This is after wearing Asolo's for over 10 years. If you decide to purchase these boots, make sure to inspect the Gore-Tex lining closely before leaving the store.
