Mixed Feelings

I have now bought three pairs of these poles. This pair I just bought was the second pair for my husband. He left the first pair I bought for him near the foot of Mt. Washington. I have owned the first pair, which I bought for myself, for about 3+ years now. I bought them shortly after Backpacker Magazine reviewed them. They have been great poles, very easy to use with the antishock adjustment being at the top. The grips are very comfortable. For the price, I think they offer great features compared to higher end Leki poles, which are more expensive and the antishock is somewhat complicated to adjust. Now the bad news: both my poles just broke on this last trip, which was to Isle Royale. The bottom section of one pole will not tighten down. If you put weight on the pole, the bottom section goes up into the middle section. The antishock is broken on the other pole. Fortunately, I am short so I could extend the middle section all the way out and I still had a serviceable pole. The antishock not working does not affect the usefulness of having a pole for balance. I do not know if this is an indicator of how my husband's new poles will behave. I have used my poles on several trips. I don't think I did anything unusual to them so I don't understand why they broke. I always cleaned them after my trips. My husband really liked his poles especially for uphill. Personally, I like the blue and black paint scheme on his new poles. My poles are the gold and black paint scheme. I will contact Masters to see how to proceed on getting my poles fixed.
