Backcountry.com Backcountry.com Bamboo Bottle - The Original 17oz.

December 7, 2011

Any clue if this has the same width opening of a wide-mouth nalgene?

I'm wondering if I could put a Guyot splashguard in so I don't spill all over myself when walking.

Mountain Hardwear Compressor Insulated Jacket - Men's

December 7, 2011

After talking with a Mountain Hardware rep I was able to find out that they tested their Thermic Micro to have a clo of .76. I believe PL Eco is .74 so they should initially have the same warmth.

Loft retention would play a much more important role when comparing the two since we all know that after being packed down again and again all synthetics loose their loft and insulating values.

Stoic Luft Hoody Synthetic Insulated Sweater - Men's

November 22, 2011

I also attempted to contact Backcountry multiple times about clo values and didn't get a real answer either.

I've been skiing with their Welder Insulated (100g cirrus and a slightly heaver shell) and have been happy with it over a midweight baselayer 80% of the time skiing in Utah. Its been used on 5 degree days with a R1 and 320 weight merino midlayer and comfortable with pit zips open at 40. It did fine on bluebird days, but when it was puking out the fabric wetted out.

I recently picked up a nano puff to use under a new eVent shell. Id say the warmth while testing them standing outside wasn;t as dramatic as I was hoping. The stoic was warmer, but not considerably. Its probally closer to PL Eco or Infinity than Primaloft one.

However for skiing, this jacket is fine, for lightweight hiking - id look somewhere else.

**Real world active use could vary from my sedentary use sitting on my porch.**

Stoic Bertol Guide Softshell Pant - Men's

November 8, 2011

The Schoeller material used is much more breathable and more water resistant than the material on the Stoic Tour's.

The Backcountry.com Tour SE uses the same Schoeller material - this would be a better comparison.

Can anyone from bc chime in on the differences?

Stoic Luft Down Sweater - Men's

November 5, 2011

This jacket seems to have the same shell material and pockets as last years version yet weighs 3oz more. The old jacket had synthetic insulation on the sides of the jacket which seems to have been replaced by down so shouldn't it be lighter - or did they make this jacket warmer than last years?

Stoic Wraith Shell - Men's

July 28, 2011

The weight is spot on, it was actually slightly underweight at just 2.25 oz (medium) on my scale.

Haven't used it yet, but initial impressions were that it is SUPER thin, even for a windshell. It seems much more fragile than pertex, but like I said I have not worn it outside yet.

Will post real review soon.

Stoic eVent Stash Shell - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 February 20, 2011

Im 5'9" 160 lbs, average non-muscular build, and debated for a while between the Medium and Large. I wear a Medium in most brands (sometimes a small in Patagonia) I bought both and although the Large is a bit roomy with just a base layer and 100 weight fleece, the medium was way too small (width and length) with anything more than a base layer. And even wearing just that it was too tight to wear for casual use. I ended up keeping the large and after wearing for a few weeks am now used to the sizing.

This jacket is great, breathes like a champ, lightweight and water and windproof. Surprisingly durable for how thin it is. Have skied into plenty of branches (and an actual tree) with no damage to the jacket.

Marmot Altitude Softshell Jacket - Men's

February 16, 2011

Temperature ratings are rarely ever given since it is a very individualized topic. Clothing you wear should be based on temperature, wind, precipitation, and level of activity. Somebody hiking in 20 degree weather might only wear a base layer and a shell while if I was standing outside waiting for a bus I might want a down jacket.

Most softshells will just protect you from the elements (wind, light snow) while remaining very breathable (like this jacket). Some have a light fleece lining, but in general are only meant as a shell.

Mammut Lucido TXLite Headlamp

December 9, 2010

Maybe they changed the design recently but mine has 3 settings - Low -> Medium -> High. To switch through them you just click the power button on the side. No extending holding down of the button is needed. And there is no difference between a flood or spot light.

Great Spot Light

Black Diamond Spot Headlamp

Black Diamond Spot Headlamp

Rating for this product: 4 December 8, 2010

This headlamp is super bright and shines farther then most would ever need in the spotlight mode, however the flood light is comparable to a $20 headlamp.

I find the red light to be kind of gimmicky since it really all that bright, but it worked well in a tent while trying not to wake up my girlfriend with a bright light in her face.

I see that there is a zipper on the back panel to get into the main compartment. What is the point of that? Does the front zipper also allow access to the main comportment, or is it a smaller partition? How big is the smaller compartment?

Stoic Tour

Stoic Tour Softshell Pant - Men's

Stoic Tour Softshell Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 January 12, 2010

Ive used these pants the past week skiing at some resorts in Park City. Temperatures have ranged from 15-35 degrees and the pants have kept me comfortable wearing a cwx insulator pant underneath. When I tele ski and work up a real sweat these breathe great! I usually wear a 31x31 pant. These fit little large in the waist and are too long, however when wearing a belt they fit perfectly. Also the color is a DARK gray, not black (unless somehow the color has faded after the first wash).

ExOfficio Give-N-Go Boxer Brief - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 April 22, 2009

Pretty comfortable and relatively inexpensive. Although I haven't used them too vigorously they seem to breathe well and dry quick. Most reviewers say to size down, however I'm 5' 10" 155lbs 31/32jeans and the medium fits comfortably. These do stretch well so the small could fit too, but I don't like things being too tight down there.

Great Jacket

The North Face Varius Guide Jacket - Men's

The North Face Varius Guide Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 January 30, 2007

I usually use this jacket with a North Face 200 weight fleece zipped into it and am confortable to temperatures down to around freezing. This weekend, I went skiing and it was 15 degrees (-3 with windchill) so I decided to replace my 200 fleece with my 300 weight denali. I stayed nice and warm, and was never cold in those frigid temperatures. Being made of HyVent, not goretex, I was a little worried about the wind coming through, but it preformed great, and I felt no wind.

I love the pit zips and powder skirt that this jacket had. **Also, this jacket has 2 hand pockets which many other North Face jackets don't have. This jacket is cut a little shorter than most other TNF jackets.
