Therm-a-Rest NeoAir All-Season Sleeping Pad

December 16, 2011

I have a neo-air and love it for comfort. If you're going to be out for months on end, you're taking a risk by only bringing this pad - there's always a chance the inflatables will puncture. That said, I'd probably still use it (the good night's sleep is worth it for my temperamental back) and just be careful to put some sort of barrier between it and any wood planks that might have splinters. I have two 45# pups who do walk over these in the tent - their nails have never punctured one yet…so that's all I’m basing my comment on. You're def going to find people falling on both sides of this issue. Perhaps just consider bringing a tiny repair kit if you'll have time and the ability to find and fix punctures along the way.

Marmot Venus Down Jacket - Women's

December 16, 2011

I've had this jacket for 4yrs now and it holds up well to washing. I have a front loading washer/dryer, so that helps a touch as to keeping it from being beat up. When I wash it, I use the nikwax down wash on the hand wash cycle that uses a gentle spin. I lay it flat to mostly dry and then throw it in the dryer on an air fluff setting for the final drying. Put a single clean tennis ball in the dryer on the air fluff cycle to revitalize the loft of the jacket.

Loose Fit. Shear material.

prAna Satori Legging - Women's

prAna Satori Legging - Women's

Rating for this product: 3 December 16, 2011

First off, I'm 5'2" // 120# and typically wear a 4 or 6 and consider myself to be an athletic build (+hips). I ordered these leggings in size small. The 'small' was an appropriate fit, but the leggings were pretty loose. I could've sized down to have more of the hugging feeling I wanted…but the material was rather shear when stretched. You def. need to skirt to cover all of your bum or this shear-when-stretched material would've shown all. The skirt length was perfect for all 5'2" of me and the rise on the legging was low (just like I like it!). There was enough pant length to cover a lady w/legs several inches longer than mine. The material has a silky feel to it and shed dog hair pretty well. In the end, I sent these back because I wanted a thicker (and warmer) tight where the legging fit a bit more snug. I would consider these as more of a spring wear item - too cold for me to dress up w/boots and a tunic as I had planned.

Size Medium on my 50# Border Collie.

Ruffwear Sun Shower Dog Rain Jacket

Ruffwear Sun Shower Dog Rain Jacket

Rating for this product: 5 December 4, 2011

I live in the Seattle area and do a lot of hiking (and general outdoorness) w/my pups. My border collie only has a single layer natural coat so gets cold when she gets wet. This coat may look a bit yuppie, but it holds up well to all our adventures. The green color really pops on a black and white dog. Agreed that the 'hood' is a bit of a joke.

The most important question people seem to have is what size to get:

I have a 48# classic build female border collie (classic meaning she's not a slim build little sport dog - she's lean, strong, and solid).
Chest circumference: 27"
Length from between the shoulder blades to base of tail: 24"

Size medium is a few inches too short on her, but otherwise fits v.well. For a size medium, I could make the chest plate only a few inches smaller, but it can go much, much wider if your dog has a deeper rib cage.

Isis Everyday Bikini Underwear - Women's

Isis Everyday Bikini Underwear - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 December 4, 2011

These undies came to my home as a freebee -I never would've thought to try them otherwise. First, I am 5'2" // 120# (size 4 or 6 hips) and I ordered a size small. When I pulled them out, I thought they would be WAY too small for my thicker athletic build. Surprisingly, they stretched just enough to hold and stay put. I would actually go rock climbing in these (which is my ultimate test of how well they stay put). My former favorite active undies are the patagonia bikini fit. The Isis undies are thinner and have a lower rise though (perfect for my wishes). Can't say anything for the longevity yet.

Light, waterproof boot. Happy so far.

Scarpa Kailash GTX Hiking Boot - Women's

Scarpa Kailash GTX Hiking Boot - Women's

Rating for this product: 4 November 22, 2011

The N. to S. Rim hike through the Grand Canyon is a extremely well groomed/maintained set of trails, so I can’t say that I was able to test them on many uneven surfaces. What I can say is that I had NO bruises, blisters, or other issues on the first day long hike into the canyon (i.e. hiking straight down for 6 hrs) or on the last day out of the canyon (i.e. 8 hours hiking uphill). I typically wear a US women’s size 9 and purchased these in the size 41, which fit my foot + orthotics v.well. I did sink the entire bottom of the boot to my ankle in a river at one point yet my foot stayed dry. My traction was sufficient on the gravel, sand, and rocky surfaces. Need to do more testing in wet conditions to give a final verdict, but am happy w/this purchase thus far.

CW-X 3/4 Length Stabilyx Tight - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 November 22, 2011

Ditto to all the other reviews below - love these tights. I've used them for all of my marathons thus far and cannot say enough about how supportive they are.

Just wanted to add the reference that I'm 5'2" & 120#. I typically wear a size 4 or 6. My mid section is trim, my bum is pretty average and my thighs (21")/calves (15") are monsters. I'm in the grey area for xs or s, so I ordered both to try on. When they showed up, I didn't even try to wedge my calves into the xs...I went straight for the size small. They were perfectly tight when I started but stretched out a touch after the first 50 miles or so. They still provide support to my knees, but I perhaps should've gone with the XS for more support. Grey area is grey area, I guess.

CW-X Stabilyx Tight - Men's

November 22, 2011

Check out the CW-X website where you can compare the differences between the tights. Each type focus support on slightly different areas/combinations of areas:
http://cw-x.com/Shop.aspx?sub=compareProducts

I honestly have both a running pair and a recovery pair of tights. When I'm doing really intense interval training for ironman training, I wear the recovery tights at night in hopes that they'll help me be ready for the next back to back workout. I suppose I could get the same effect I see w/the tights via ice baths and such. If you've never had to worry about lactic acid build up after workouts, maybe you don't need the recovery tights.

This is the first year I've used their running specific tights. For me the biggest thing I notice is the support for my knees/IT bands. If you have no joint/ligament issues, maybe you don't need the running pair.

Really just depends on if you want to feel better while running...or would like the added benefit of feeling a little more ready (muscles will feel more fresh) for each workout.

For reference, I chose the Stabilyx tight for my last marathon. The pro tight shows less knee support on the CW-X comparison website feature - I needed knee support more than anything.

Hope this is what you were looking for in an answer.

CW-X Stabilyx Tight - Men's

November 22, 2011

Hopefully a dude will help out w/this question...
Till then, I can tell you I'm kinda in the same deparment. XS by height and in the XS grey area by weight. My thighs (21")/calves(15") are more muscular than the average lady, so I decided to order both and try them on. I kid you not that there is no way I could've fit my calves, let alone my thighs in the XS. The small felt v.snug the first few runs, and have stretched out a touch after ~50 miles run. Even if I could've fit into the xs, the truth is that I'm not sure I would've wanted them that snug for my long distance running. Hopefully a guy will respond as well - I'm sure their measurements will help a touch more.

Favorite Work Coat

NAU Shroud Of Purrin Trench Coat - Women's

NAU Shroud Of Purrin Trench Coat - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 November 22, 2011

This softshell by Nau is my absolute favorite work jacket. I’m 5’2” //120# and purchased the size small. The front of this jacket hits just above my knees and the back actually tails lower than my knees. It’s perfect for protecting against rain, wind, and snow. The interior is just a soft fuzzy liner, which isn’t super warm. When I want to wear this jacket in the winter, I layer my down jacket underneath. The collar pops up, and buttons in place, which keeps my neck warm. Really can’t say enough about how stylish this jacket looks and how great it feels on.

The only drawback I saw was a lack of hood (windy Seattle means umbrellas won’t always work on a rainy day).

Looks Great. No Support.

prAna Abi Tank Top - Women's

prAna Abi Tank Top - Women's

Rating for this product: 2 November 22, 2011

Great look…but it just didn’t work for me. This tank has zero support, which is an absolute deal breaker for me. If it didn’t have a shelf bra in the tank, I could layer my own sports bra under. The other issue for my small busted self was that the black shelf bra liner rolled out to show at the check and inner shoulder straps. This probably wouldn’t be an issue for the larger busted lady, but anyone larger busted would also have to figure out a way to get support (since the actual tank wont be providing it).

The material is v.light weight and silky feeling. It’s comfortable and if you can make the support issue work for you, it’d be a great addition to your workout wardrobe.

PS I'm 5'2" // 120# and ordered the size small. It fit true to size.

Lolë Meditation 2 Hooded Tunic - Long-Sleeve - Women's

Lolë Meditation 2 Hooded Tunic - Long-Sleeve - Women's

Rating for this product: 4 November 22, 2011

First – yes, there’s a touch of a fit issue w/the bust of this shirt.

I’m 5’2” // 120# and purchased the size small. The tummy area of this shirt is extremely true to size – perhaps even snug - really flattering if you’re not trying to hide anything. The bust of this shirt does have the issue of billowing out if you bend over. You will def need to layer a tank under the shirt. I added a few stitches to the point where the fabric overlaps, which solved the problem in my (small busted) case. Unlike what others have said, I’m not sure if this shirt would work for the bigger busted ladies. Though there seems to be extra length to make the shirt billow out at the bust, there isn’t a lot of extra width to the fabric – big boobies might not have enough wrap coverage.

Despite the fit issue, I did keep the shirt. It’s extremely comfortable and shows off a little midsection v.well. The stitches I added solve the fit issue on my frame.

EMU Angels Lo Boot - Women's

Rating for this product: 4 November 22, 2011

These boots fit exactly like my Stinger Lo’s - comfy and perfect for the fall/winter season. I typically wear a women’s size 9 and found these to be true to size (keep in mind they’re v. roomy, so you could probably get away w/sizing down if you wanted them to fit more snug). The only thing I will mention is that the mushroom color is fairly accurate, but the leather strap is the same color as the boot – NOT a darker brown color.

Lolë Clyde Pant - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 November 22, 2011

LOVE this pant. First, I’m 5’2” // 120# and the size 4 fit me perfectly. I’m curvy from the waist down and I found this pant actually tapered in enough for my trim waist while accommodating hips.

Right now, they’re only an inch or two too long for my shortness…I’m not going to hem them since my experience w/chords says they might shrink. I’ve washed them once and hung them to dry – haven’t noticed a change in length thus far. Still might be too short for an average heighted lady.

Final note is that they’re a ‘boot cut’ but look more like a skinny pant on me. Good news for any other ladies w/running/cycling monster calves (mine are ~15” in circumference).

Rating for this product: 3 November 22, 2011

This shirt just had too much bulky fabric with the wrap and the thick ties for my little frame. I’m 5’2” // 120# and the small fit well in the shoulders/arms. There was just too much fabric in the torso for me. This might look flattering on a lady w/more natural curve, but it just made me look like a little girl swathed in too much fabric.

Excellent fabric quality and fabric feel - just the wrong fit for me.

SealLine Urban Shoulder Bag

Rating for this product: 5 September 15, 2011

This is my go-to social messenger bag for bumming around Seattle. Though I love the Chrome messenger bags, they're a bit too clunky for my style. The seal line bag is a touch more stream lined while still being waterproof.

The small bag fits a crumpler haven camera bag insert, which is what my cannon 7d lives in. The combo keeps my camera safe and dry no matter what weather Seattle throws at us.

EMU Point Addis Hooded Sweater - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 May 23, 2011

This cardigan fits long and lean. I'm 5'2" // 120 lbs and the small fits me perfectly in the torso. It's long, so it goes past my hips (as shown on the model) - this is a style I love but might be something to pay attention to if you're looking for something shorter. The sleeves are a few inches too long on me, but that's to be expected w/my height.

The purple color shown above is fairly true to the product. The material is as I expect from Emu, not scratchy and nearly silken (that's great for wool). The sweater breaths well and I have every intention of traveling with it this summer/fall.

Great fit - great purchase! LOVE the sale price!

EMU Centreside Cardigan - Women's

Rating for this product: 3 May 23, 2011

This cardigan fit me v.well when the top button was done and the others were open. The material lays well and flows out to show my little middle section and is flattering over my hips. The reason I returned it was simply that the material looked too much like a cotton t-shirt and I wanted it to exude a little more class, which I associate w/wool.

True to size - great fit - just not for me.

Also, the blue is a little bit lighter than what is shown above.

First, do not be fooled by the pic above - this top is HOT pink (not a deeper cherry color). A deeper cherry (fuscia) would've worked for me, but this color just doesn't do good things for my coloring.

This shirt is a v.v.snug fit. I'm 5'2" / 120 lbs and ordered the 'small' I would probably size up if I were keeping the top. The shelf bra is black. Unfortunately, you can see the shelf bra through the pink outter layer. Not a big deal, but it bothered me for how expensive the top was.

Awesome for hot hiking.

prAna Mahdia Avery Tank Top - Women's

prAna Mahdia Avery Tank Top - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 April 26, 2011

This top gets top marks from me, which isn't standard for my older Prana tops. From the moment you put this top on, the material feels cool on your skin. Though it feels soft/cool, I don't think the material will snag easily. What makes this tank so much more versatile for my life style is the addition of little pockets in front that can hold padded cups (not included, but I've been using the cups from my Lululemon tops). Though I don't wear the cup inserts on most hot hikes/backpacking, I will add them in when I wear the top in more casual/social situations.

The top fit true to size for me. I'm 5'2"//120 lb and purchased the small white top. The white material is not see through, though you can see a slight color variation where the top goes from one layer on the bottom to the two layers up top. The other note is that this top would show some lumps on your tummy in white, but is much more forgiving than my older Prana tops.

As for support...this top did v.little for me (works ok for hiking) and might not be supportive enough for bigger ladies unless you layer a bra underneath.

Durrable Construction

Arc'teryx Beta AR Pant - Women's

Arc'teryx Beta AR Pant - Women's

Rating for this product: 4 March 20, 2011

These are my go-to rain pants for hiking in the PNW. I’ve mostly been using them for mountaineering, which they work extremely well for. The reinforced material on the inside of the ankles has saved me from kicking holes in them several times. It adds weight and stiffness, but has been worth it for me.

Though the side-zips do not extend the entire way up the pant (they end 5-6” from the top of the pant), I prefer this. This does mean you have to step in and out of the waist of the pant to put them on or take them off. The benefit for me has been that the waistband of your backpack does will not rub on zipper ridgelines. Overall, it’s been a compromise that has been worth it for me – I tend to just start our mountain hikes w/the pants on since they need to be layered under my harness anyway.

This pant might be a bit too heavy for summer hikes – I’m sure you could find a lighter/cheaper option, but I wear them all year’round.

As for sizing, I’m 5’2”, 120# and typically wear a 4/6. I ordered these pants in small and still have enough room for several thick warm layers underneath. They are too long for my short legs, but the excess material scrunches above the reinforced inner ankle panel (so it’s not in a place where it’s going to get in the way).

Fitted cuffs, long tail, arcteryx quality.

Arc'teryx Strato Fleece Jacket - Women's

Arc'teryx Strato Fleece Jacket - Women's

Rating for this product: 4 March 11, 2011

So far, I've only taken this jacket out for 3 hikes and washed it once. I cannot comment on if it will pill (which was my biggest complaint for my '09 arcteryx fleece cardigan).
My favorite feature of this jacket has been the fitted cuffs, which layer nicely under gloves. They also block wind from channeling up the sleeves. The cuffs fit my large wrists w/out applying any pressure to my skin - they're extremely comfortable. They would not allow for gloves to easily be layered under the cuffs (this might not be the case if you have smaller wrists).
The other notable feature of this jacket is it's overall length. I have a short torso, so the jacket comes well past my waist (longer than my convert cardigan). The back has a tail that provides more coverage for when you're in a bent over position. The tail does peak out from under my arcteryx beta AR rain jacket. Living in WA though, I tend to have on rain pants if I have on a rain jacket, so I just tuck the fleece into the pants to solve the problem.

As for the overall size, I'm a petite size 4/6 and ordered a small. There is a fair amount of room in both the arms and the torso - I could easily fit another layer of fleece under the jacket. This fit looks good but I have to be careful on gusty days that I tuck layers in to prevent air from gusting up the torso.

Overall, I'm extremely happy w/the jacket's quality - pretty standard for what I expect from arcteryx.

PS I ordered the Purpura color and it is extremely vivid. It looks great to me, but not for those who prefer more muted or tame colors.

SmartWool NTS Microweight T-Shirt - Short-Sleeve - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 March 9, 2011

This microweight shirt is my go-to for HOT and sunny backpacking and hiking days - the microweight is cool enough to be out in those hot conditions. It keeps my pack from rubbing and the sun off my shoulders. The wool absorbs sweat and dries quickly while staying extremely comfortable against the skin. It is just a touch itchy when you first put it on, but it's v.soft for wool overall.

I'm 5'2", 120# and purchased the small. I usually wear a 4 (or 6 for more room in the shoulders) and the small fits me well - tailored cut w/out being tight.

NAU Lightbeam Hooded Softshell Jacket - Women's

NAU Lightbeam Hooded Softshell Jacket - Women's

Rating for this product: 3 March 8, 2011

I purchased this jacket off the nau website in small, blackberry. The jacket is extremely light weight and adds a cute windbreaker effect over my basic layers. Though I enjoy supporting Nau because of their ethics, I do slightly regret the purchase as it has no real practical use. The jacket might keep a v.light mist off but the cut would mean my neckline would still get wet. The hood has no way to be fixed in place, so the slightest breeze will blow it off your head.

As for the fit, I'm 5'2" 120# and typically wear a size 4/6. I ordered a small, but am swimming in the jacket. If I hadn't already worn the jacket a few times, I would exchange for a xs. There is so much fabric around the torso that the cute tie/snap closure around the natural waist is lost on me - I just look like a straight up and down figure wearing an oversized jacket. For me, it's def a tunic length jacket - it would look amazing over skinny jeans if you have the right body shape for that look.

The fabric is as it's described - v.v.lightweight - and a light mist will bead up on the surface. I'd still recommend the Nau brand to anyone, just perhaps a more practical jacket.

PS My fav. feature in the jacket is a smaller zip-closed pocket w/in one of the larger front pocket. Perfect for your id/c.card when out and about.

Osprey Packs Kode 30 Backpack - 1600-2000cu in

March 8, 2011

This response is a bit late, but I'm a little person - 120#, 5'2" - I got the small pack. It contours to my back perfectly, so I'd assume your +6" means a medium would work better for you. I had to cut and refinish several of the straps because they'd be able to fit around a v.large person - I'm assuming you'll have this issue as well.

Osprey Packs Kode 30 Backpack - 1600-2000cu in

Rating for this product: 4 March 8, 2011

So far, this has been the perfect bag for day trip hiking in the snow w/snowshoes strapped on the back. My snowshoes strap on easily and the waterproof compartment is perfect for extra layers and safety gear - you just have to be willing to take the pack off to access this compartment. The exterior non-waterproof compartments are great for my microspikes, food, sunglasses (there is a special sunglass/goggles compartment), etc and I can still access them w/my snowshoes strapped on. Since I have MSR lightening ascent snowshoes, I am keeping an eye on the straps to make sure they don't fray - the reinforcing on the straps doesn't protect them from the edges of my snowshoe (clearly designed for a snowboard).

The only issue I've had w/this pack is that you need to be careful of how you load it to assure it doesn't get lumpy against you back. If you have a 2L cammelback bladder, it pushes into the middle of your back inappropriately. I've found that using my 2L bladder and filling it less keeps the back piece of this pack smoothly fitted to my back. You also need to be sure you don't 'stuff' your layers into the main compartment as this will make the fit against your back lumpy as well. Loading the pack for comfort isn't a big issue after you get the hang of it though.

NAU Dual Citizen Hooded Jacket - Women's

Rating for this product: 4 December 24, 2010

I purchased the gun metal version of the above cardi. First, the picture above does not show the correct color on my laptop or work PC - the outter color is grey (gun metal), not the blue. This item runs a bit big - I'm typically a small (due to broad shoulders) but the xs of this fits me well. The torso seems a bit short for current styles - I'm 5'2" and the xs length fits my torso well (not overly long and actually shows my under shirt layers). The arms are sufficiently long despite sizing down. The item washes well. A lot of the Nau organic cottons are line dry or low tumble dry only - I've only line dried this item and it stays wrinkle free (awesome!).

Shorter Torso - Great Fit

NAU Dual Citizen Hooded Jacket - Women's

NAU Dual Citizen Hooded Jacket - Women's

Rating for this product: 4 December 24, 2010

I purchased the gun metal version of the above cardi. First, the picture above does not show the correct color on my laptop or work PC - the outter color is grey (gun metal), not the blue. This item runs a bit big - I'm typically a small (due to broad shoulders) but the xs of this fits me well. The torso seems a bit short for current styles - I'm 5'2" and the xs length fits my torso well (not overly long and actually shows my under shirt layers). Casually Classy

NAU Juxta V-Neck Shirt - Short-Sleeve - Women's

NAU Juxta V-Neck Shirt - Short-Sleeve - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 August 31, 2010

This shirt's colors are true to the image above. I'm 5'2" and have a triathlete's build. My shoulders are large, but still fit in the size small. The chest drapes in a way that is flattering. There is a bit of extra room around the waist of the shirt, but it flows well too. Like I said, I have swimmers arms and the arms fit perfectly - if you had stronger arms than me, the arm opening might be a little snug. There's ample length left, so I think it'll fit the taller ladies as well. The fabric itself is v.soft. Overall, the shirt is comfortable - cute enough to be worn by itself or layered under a cardigain/jacket.

Perfect for letting gear breath.

Kelty Vent Binto - 1400cu in

Kelty Vent Binto - 1400cu in

Rating for this product: 5 June 6, 2010

This is perfect for carrying workout gear that needs to breath.

It'll fit a wetsuit post triathlon or bike gear (helmet, shoes, jacket, binto box, etc.) post sweaty workout.

It allows your gear to breath yet the bottom panel keeps your car floor dry. If you LOVE organization like my OCD self, you'll like how many of these Kelty Bintos you can place next to each other in your trunk. Also - perfect for folding flat on its side when not in use. My only qualm is that I would've preferred it came w/a shoulder strap for easy transport (it has clips to attach a strap, just no strap).

Flattering Fit - EXTRA warm.

Stoic Breaker Fleece Full-Zip Hooded Sweatshirt - Women's

Stoic Breaker Fleece Full-Zip Hooded Sweatshirt - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 June 6, 2010

This hoodie is extremely warm - as warm as my Arcteryx softshell but not as windproof. There’s no layer of fabric behind the front zipper, so you risk that metal touching your skin if your base layers leave anything exposed…it also allows a little bit of air through. The fit is v. feminine. I have large shoulders (wear a suit jacket size 6) and a lean waist (pant size 4 or 26”/27”) – the hoodie fits my shoulders and cuts in to show off my waist…not that that’s important when you’re hiking…but it doesn’t hurt ;-)

Comfortable for layering.

prAna Jolie Tank Top - Women's

prAna Jolie Tank Top - Women's

Rating for this product: 4 June 6, 2010

This tank top is comfortable and fits my short torso (I'm just 5'1") well. It might be a little short on a taller person - not sure. It's also a little thin - if you're fit, it looks ok. If you'd rather hid some body sections, it might not be for you.

Big & Baggy

Coal Lindy Beanie - Women's

Coal Lindy Beanie - Women's

Rating for this product: 4 June 6, 2010

This is a big and baggy slouch beanie. It looks cute on my medium-sized head, but I think it might engulf a tiny cranium. It's more a statment rather than a functionally warm beanie.

Perfect over-night pack.

Deuter Futura Pro 34 SL Backpack - Women's - 2100cu in

Rating for this product: 5 April 26, 2010

This is my second Deuter backpack. I pack v.efficiently/light, so have been using this backpack for multi-night backpacking trips in warm weather. The back mesh panel allows more ventilation than any other brand pack I've found and is still extremely comfortable. My most recent trip along the Kalalau Trail in Kauai had me climbing up and down cliffs - this pack allowed a lot of movement w/it's pivoting hip-belt. The included rain-cover w/its storage pocket is amazing for its convenience and fit. This pack had ample pockets for easy storage of smaller items as well as enough straps/secure points to allow items to be attached on the outside.

I had this pack loaded to 25-30 lbs and had no problem w/the weight. The hipbelt is not as firm as my extended trip pack, but was ok for the load I mentioned. It is a slim pack - I'm 5'2"/size 4 and pack fits me perfectly. I don't think the hipbelt padded portion would be long/big enough for someone w/larger hips.

My only qualm w/this pack is that there is no easily reached pocket while the pack is on your back - you will not be able to quickly grab your camera along the trail.
