Arc'teryx Beta FL Jacket - Men's - DO NOT USE

February 7, 2012

I hope this answers some questions before they're asked. Arc'teryx did not MOVE production overseas - they expanded overseas. There are still many products they make here in North America.

The jacket is awesome but I haven't seen enough winter this year to really put it to the test yet. I can say, though, that the fit is the best of ANY Arc'teryx jacket I have had the pleasure of wearing. Squid Ink is also a more awesome color than you could possibly imagine without seeing it in person. I'll say more after I have a chance to put it through the wringer.

Icebreaker Beast 150 Anatomica Boxer Underwear - Men's

Icebreaker Beast 150 Anatomica Boxer Underwear - Men's

Rating for this product: 3 February 8, 2012

I've gotten several different pairs of Icebreaker underwear over the years and I was really excited to try the Anatomicas. For the most part they fit, feel, and look great, but there's just something that's not quite right at the hem. They're usually fine but sometimes when I sit I feel something getting pinched and I'm not sure if it's because they're a little too short or if it's for another reason. It hasn't bothered me enough to stop wearing them but they're not as comfortable as the Icebreaker relaxed fit boxers.

Marmot Zeus Down Jacket - Men's

February 6, 2012

If you're trying to compare it to the Downlight Sweater I have both. The Zeus is slightly warmer. The Downlight Sweater is slightly lighter. The face fabric is a little heavier on the Zeus than the DS so it doesn't lose down at anywhere near the same rate as the DS. The DS does leak down, but that's because it has such a light shell - and a plume or two at a time isn't going to make much of a difference for a long time. You will lose down from almost any jacket or sleeping bag but if the annoyance is just too much you can't go wrong with the Zeus.

Arc'teryx Ventii Jacket - Men's

February 6, 2012

You'd be surprised what people are still buying in "this economy." The people in the financial position to buy Arc'teryx haven't all been hit as hard as the general population. The store I work in sold more Fission SV jackets this year than we ever have in the past and it's been a pretty mild winter. Now, on to the jacket... I'm sure Brandon Carlile can tell you a lot more about it than I can but the Ventii is a step above the rest of Arc's ski line (in the right conditions). Start with a Mako jacket (which is already $750) and make the hood and powder skirt removable. Next replace the standard Gore Pro Shell exterior with Gore Pro Shell Stretch - and that stuff isn't cheap. Would I pay nearly $1000 for it? No - but it doesn't fit my needs. However, there are people looking for a jacket that does everything the Ventii does and they are willing to pay for it. Don't pretend you're better than everyone else by shaming a company for selling an expensive product.

Different wool fabric is used in each jacket. The Aspiring is lofted and 'fleecy' while the ascent is closer to the standard merino in other Icebreaker garments - just thicker. Icebreaker RealFleece 320 Aspiring Hooded Jacket- Men's

January 9, 2011

It's warm, wind resistant, breathable, and incredibly soft. This is more of a jacket than a sweatshirt and compares well to the polartec jackets I've worn in the $150-$200 range - I would say backcountry goofed when they wrote their own description. I've spent a lot of time in the non-hooded Aspiring fleece and I never want to take it off at the end of the day.

Arc'teryx Alpha SL Jacket - Men's

September 22, 2009

I think the SL is a little easier to live with backpacking. The cut is slightly longer and the pockets are much easier to live with if you ever plan on putting your handsin them. The pockets on the LT are a little awkward to access. The LT is heaevier by a very small amount and will be a little more weather resistant, but if you really need that extra protection you've probably got bigger problems. Either one would work great, but for backpacking I like the SL a little more than the LT.

SealLine Kodiak Window Dry Bag - DO NOT USE

SealLine Kodiak Window Dry Bag - DO NOT USE

Rating for this product: 4 September 10, 2009

I've had nothing but good experiences with my SeaLine Kodiak Window. The 10L bag is large enough for a change of clothes and a jacket or two when you're spending a day on the river (and the kids you're supervising decide to include you in their water war). The window makes it easier to find everything in your bag and I've never had problems with it leaking. It's pretty light and durable so I've used it as a bear bag a few times on short trips - it works pretty well for this purpose. It's not as heavy-duty as some of the drybags out on the market, but it's also not as heavy.

Marmot PreCip Jacket - Men's

Marmot PreCip Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 September 9, 2009

The PreCip Jacket is good at what it does. It will keep you dry and the inner coating actually does a decent job of keeping things from getting clammy. The pitzips and mesh pockets do an okay job of letting fresh air in without too much rain, and the pockets are accessible while wearing a pack.

The PreCip sets the standards for $100 rain protection but it has its limitations. You won't easily find a better $100 jacket but if you really use it a ton you probably won't get more than 2 seasons of heavy use out of it. $100 buys you a jacket that relies on a coating, rather than a membrain, for weather protection. Once that coating wears off it's up to you to re-coat it, but spray on and wash in coatings are never as good as factory coatings that are chemically bonded to the shell. If you only have $100 to spend buy the PreCip. If you have $50 more and want to get a little more use out of a jacket get one that uses a membrain. Everyone makes one and they're just as light.

Nice inexpensive 3 pins

Alpina Blazer Touring Boot DO NOT USE

Alpina Blazer Touring Boot DO NOT USE

Rating for this product: 4 September 8, 2009

It's getting more and more difficult to find lightweight 3-pin boots for XC skiing, so I was really excited when I found these. They fit my feet well and offer enough support for a little off-trail skiing when the white stuff starts accumulating. They're warm enough to ski in when the thermometer hits zero without relying on 8 pairs of socks, and they're fairly comfortable. They don't offer too much support up top because of the laces higher up, but I haven't had any problems rolling ankles in them.

They're a nice boot for the money, but they're also pretty much the last 3-pin boots you'll find that aren't super stiff and super heavy. Go for it if you just can't bring yourself to put new plastic bindings on your Bonnas. They're a little low-tech, but if that mattered you probably wouldn't have 3-pin bindings on your skis.

MSR DragonFly Stove

MSR DragonFly Stove

Rating for this product: 5 September 7, 2009

The DragonFly may weigh a little more than other white gas stoves but it's worth it when you need flame control in the backcountry. The dual control valves allow for more precise flame control than single valve systems like that used on the Whisperlite and means less burnt food. I've boiled water for 12 and cooked the freshest lake trout I've ever had on a DragonFly and it performs well in either situation. The wide pot supports allow it to handle cooking for larger groups especially well. It's a little loud, but it cooks just as well at 9,000 feet as it does at sea level... and in 9 years I've never had it fail to light.

It sets up easily and strips down for field maintenance without problems, at least in my experience. The fuel pump works well but I would suggest taking an extra on long trips because of the plastic construction. The DragonFly requires a little bit of love & care every once in a while to keep it going 100%, but the shaker valve will keep it running just in between cleanings and maintenance.

I can't think of any time the DragonFly has let me down and my experience with MSR has been nothing but positive. It's a great stove if you want to do more cooking than boiling in the backcountry and for me it's proven to be extremely reliable in every situation I've faced.

The Ronin fits great and allows for excellent mobility while paddling. The fit is a little bulky if you're standing up with it on, but once you're settled into your boat it's great. MSR Reactor 1.7L Stove System

MSR Reactor 1.7L Stove System

Rating for this product: 5 September 6, 2009

Got my reactor recently and used it last weekend in Shenandoah. This thing is an absolute ROCKET. As promised I had a liter of water ready for dinner in about 3 minutes (I didn't bother to time it, but it was fast) and was soon enjoying(?) my unseasoned chicken, corn, and rice. Water for coffee in the morning came quickly as well - so no complaints here. Turn on the stove and it lights easily with a lighter or match. It just takes a few seconds to heat up before it's ready to rock. I've read complaints about it not having an auto ignition feature, but I've never had much luck with those systems. Just make sure you have a windproof lighter/sparker/etc. if you're spending time at exposed sites. I'll add something about cold weather performance once winter rolls around.

The Reactor packs nicely into the pot along with a lighter and fuel canister (but the 8 oz isopro makes for a tight fit if you insist on keeping the cap on it). The whole system fits nicely into a pack as long as you've got enough room for a 1.5 L pot.

It's not the most versatile stove and it's not for gourmet cooking. It is what it is... an 18 oz. stove system for people who like to get up and go without burning through too much fuel. If you want to play gourmet chef in the backcounrty go with the Dragonfly. The pot is a little small for more than 2 or 3 people, but a larger pot is coming soon.

Granite Gear Alpine Vapor Backpack - 3300-3900cu in

August 15, 2009

The Alpine Vapor is about the right size, but it doesn't have the load capacity of other packs of the same size. It's also meant as more of an alpine climbing pack than one for traditional backpacking (they make a Vapor Trail model that may be better suited). The vapor suspension it uses is meant for 30 lbs or less, and he will probably need to carry 35 or 40 lbs at one point or another. Try looking at the Granite Gear Nimbus pack series or look at the Osprey Aether 60. You could consider a little larger pack (70 to 75 liters) if there are any plans to go on longer trips like one at Philmont, but that means having excess capacity most of the time. Involve him in this search and you'll find something that works well. Good luck.

Scarpa Kailash GTX Hiking Boot - Men's

August 13, 2009

6 km sounds like an awfully long portage and you will not want to be wearing soaking wet boots for that. And where did you find such a heavy canoe? My guess is that will be a two-trip portage because a lighter kevlar boat and a portage pack are bad enough to carry at the same time.

If you need the stability of boots I would drag everything out of the water and put them on after that. Or else stick with trail runners or light hikers with no membrane. Leather does take a long time to dry but some of the synthetics out there can really take a beating without showing too much wear and tear. Depending on where you canoe the terrain can go from a walk in the park to boulder-hopping, which would require some extra support and stability.

Last time I went to Algonquin I ended up leaving my boots in the car and either wore my trail runners or my Chaco's the entire time. If you are able to I would really suggest renting a kevlar boat from Algonquin Outfitters. I spent a week with a kevlar Swift Kipawa and it was a great boat.

Marmot Zeus Down Jacket - Men's

Marmot Zeus Down Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 August 8, 2009

The Zeus is a nice lightweight down jacket that takes up minimal room in your pack. The stitching is done well and the baffles are nice and lofty. I just got it so I can't say much about how warm it really is... just that it's too warm to wear in southeast Michigan in August. It does loft higher than the Patagonia Down Sweater, so it should be the warmer of the two.

The two zippered handwarmer pockets are well-placed and the whole jacket will stuff into the left pocket. The waist drawcord adjusts from inside them and there are two stuff pockets on the inside of the Zeus that will fit a pair of gloves or your lunch. The wind flap behind the zipper is nice and sturdy, and the collar is a good height.

I'm 6'0" & 175 lbs and a medium fits me well without being too tight or too baggy. It fits under my Arc'teryx Beta AR just fine, too. And Gargoyle is an awesome color.

Kelty Trekker Backpack - 3900-3950cu in

August 8, 2009

I have to agree with chris. External frame packs have their strong points (monster load capacity and tons of lash points) but today's internal frame packs are generally more comfortable and easier to live with. They fit more closely to your body and would probably be the better choice in the Cascades.

I would suggest walking into your nearest outfitter and trying on a few different packs before buying one. They'll get you set up for the correct torso length and help you sort out the features you might want in a backpack.

Salomon XA Pro 3D Ultra GTX Trail Running Shoe - Men's

Salomon XA Pro 3D Ultra GTX Trail Running Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 August 8, 2009

I've had my XA's for a year and a half now and there's not much to complain about. They keep my feet safe from the elements and grip fairly well, considering the lack of an aggressive sole pattern. The quick lace system is also nice when you're feeling too lazy to tie a pair of shoes or boots.

I wear mine all the time when I'm camping, outside on my feet all day, and just when the weather is really crappy. They are a little warm for summer temps because of the gtx liner, though.

The lacing ssystem is quick and easy, but it takes away the ability to focus pressure at specific points. They do adjust to your feet after you've had them on and moved around a little, but this may not be a problem for everyone. Mine have also started to squeak a lot when I'm walking around, but I can't remember when this started.

The one thing I wish Salomon would do is offer a color scheme that isn't so dark and dreary. I've never really been a fan of dirt and moss color schemes. I feel weird wearing them in civilization because of the colors. A little less dark gray and black would be nice.

Best little headlamp around

Black Diamond Gizmo Headlamp

Black Diamond Gizmo Headlamp

Rating for this product: 5 June 14, 2009

In two years my Gizmo has never let me down. It's bright enough for night hikes and has a second brightness setting that works well around camp or in your tent. It doesn't have a spotlight like the BD Spot or other lamps with 1-watt LEDs but I haven't come across a situation in which that has been a necessity for me.

Battery life has just been awesome for me. I spend 30 to 40 nights in a tent every year (and use it to grill all winter) and I've only replaced the batteries once or twice in the two years I've owned my Gizmo. A few people mentioned something about poor performance in the cold, but that's just how batteries work. Keep it in your pocket to keep it warm until you need some light and it will be fine. I've routinely used it in temps around 0 F without problems. If you need a headlamp for prolonged lighting in the cold buy one with a battery pack separate from the light... that's why they made them.

You can't beat it for $20 and most people don't need anything more than the Gizmo. If you need a spotlight, buy a spotlight. If you don't, get a Gizmo. Plus, it only weighs a couple of ounces with batteries. Score. There's a reason I recommend it to every customer at my store in need of a headlamp.

Granite Gear Nimbus Meridian Backpack - 3400-3800cu in

June 3, 2009

I'm a scout leader myself and I've been looking at this pack for a while. From what I've heard it carries weight well for the size and weight of the pack itself. But why are you carrying extra crew gear? Your pack should be lighter than any of your scouts' packs... it would be good for them.

I've had a Gregory Shasta for about eight years and that's been a great pack for 45-60 pound loads, but I'm not a big fan of carrying all that weight. There's a point where it doesn't matter how nice your pack is... you're still going to feel the weight at the end of the day. If you really want to carry that much, though, go with something between 70 and 80 liters. They'll handle extra weight better because of heavier duty suspension systems and they'll have extra room for bulky crew gear and food. I would try looking at the Stratus Access 4500 if you want to still look at Granite Gear. It has more room and a higher weight capacity than the Nimbus.

Just make sure you go to a store and try a few on. Packs are like boots and if your pack doesn't fit you correctly you just won't enjoy your trip as much. Packs all fit differently and you need one to fit your body type and torso length.

Great boots, just a little narrow

Scarpa Kailash GTX Hiking Boot - Men's

Scarpa Kailash GTX Hiking Boot - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 January 26, 2009

I bought mine abou a month ago and so far I have really just been wearing them at work and school, but I have spent some time in them in Shenandoah NP. The toe box is a little narrow for me, but it doesn't bother me until I've put a few miles in the hills. I have a pretty wide forefoot (I can't wear penny loafers) so this isn't too surprising, and I may take them to a bootfitter to see what they can do. The arches are a little low with the stock insoles, but I replaced them with some Superfeet and it's all good (they take up a little more volume than the Scarpa insoles, though).

The outsoles are pretty aggressive and they've been great on all types of terrain. The suede looks great and they haven't really required any break-in time. They will be awesome boots for you if they fit you correctly, not so much if they don't. Just don't get too fixated on one boot model if it won't fit your feet. I would suggest you try a few before you buy this if you have a wide foot (try the Asolo Fugitive or Vasque Breeze).

Arc'teryx Venta SV Softshell Jacket - Men's

January 12, 2009

Softshells made with Gore Windstopper have a reputation for being more resistant to wind and weather than other softshell fabrics while still maintaining a higher level of breathability than traditional hardshells. The Venta SV is not as insulatied as some other softshells though, so it would require more layers underneath than some softshells, depending on the conditions, of course. It has a light fleece interior, but nothing like the Arc'teryx Hercules. It will do much better on a windy ridge than the Hercules, though, and it is sized more closely to one of Arc'teryx's hardshells than to their softshells like the trim fitting Gamma MX. And because the seams are fully taped it will handle wet conditions better than many other softshells. Softshell fabrics generally handle wet weather alright as long as you're not just standing in the rain, but most cannot be seam taped. And, by the way, when they say a jacket is helmet compatible they usually mean for CLIMBING helmets, and NOT ski helmets. It's not surprising that it did not fit over randy's Giro - it was never meant to. I would think putting it on over a ski helmet would just turn it into a giant wind scoop on the descent.

Asolo Fugitive Gore-Tex Boot - Men's

December 7, 2008

I would go into a store and try on a few different pairs and different sizes. Go at the end of the day because your feet will tend to swell during the day if you are walking (or hiking/backpacking). Try to get it out of your head that you have to have a certain pair of boots because every pair will fit differently. This boot may fit your feet horribly and be completely wrong for you, while another boot you would have never considered may fit like a dream. A good salesman won't let you leave the store with a pair of boots that fits you incorrectly.

And the Mithril isn't; it would be closer to the Venta SV, but not built like an Arc'teryx. The other jacket I thought about buying when I got my Hercules was the Patagonia Winter Guide Jacket. If you're looking for something similar that's the closest you will find, I believe. The interior fleece does not loft as high as the Hercules, but it may fit what you're looking for a little better. Arc'teryx Hyllus Hooded Fleece Jacket - Men's

Arc'teryx Hyllus Hooded Fleece Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 November 7, 2008

I own six performance jackets. This might be my favorite. I have worn it playing in the snow when it's 10 degrees out, in the rain in Arlington, and pretty much every other weather condition since I got it last November. It's warm enough to wear over a t-shirt in any temp over 35, and great with just a baselayer down to about 20 if you're working hard.

The seams aren't taped so you will get wet if you stand in the rain for long enough, but the DWR does a pretty good job of keeping you dry in all but sustained, steady rain. By design it is not windproof, just highly wind resistant, so it can get a little chilly when the wind is really rippin unless you have a few layers underneath. I just wish the main zipper was backed by some form of storm flap because I feel like it lets in more of the wind than the polartec powershield does.

Nothing will ever cheer you up more than putting on that fleece lined hood when it's frigid outside. The way it feels on your ears is just awesome. Plus it keeps snow from coming in through the collar (for those of us who do not like the feeling of snow down our backs).

Arc'teryx Gamma MX Hooded Jacket - Women's

November 6, 2008

About the "missing features" of the gamma mx:The majority of softshell jackets are made without pit zips because of their superior breathability compared to waterproof/breathable jackets. The price point comes from the special polartec powershield lightweight fabric, and the fact that alpinists looking for a jacket with the features of the gamma mx are willing to pay so much. Also, Arc'Teryx has positioned itself as a premium brand and, consequently, commands a premium price. As for the hood... Arc'Teryx only makes a few jackets with stowable hoods (which add weight over a non-stowable hood) and they are all gore-tex shells. The thicker powershield fabric makes the hood too bulky (in my opnion) to stow.

Do everything shorts

Patagonia Nine Trails Short - Men's

Patagonia Nine Trails Short - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 May 20, 2008

I love my Nine Trails shorts. They're stretchy, highly breathable, and just all around comfortable. I've been wearing mine mostly for climbing and they haven't shown any sign of wear yet, but the DWR has seen better days (probably because I've sent them through the washer so many times using regular detergent). I can't wait to get out backpacking with these. They have enough pocket space to keep a few things close at hand (two side zip, one rear zip) and secure. I'd like to get another pair for those trips when too much activity and not enough water necessitates taking two pairs of shorts. I'm 6'0" 175 lbs and have a 32/33" waist - the mediums fit me perfectly.

Great! I'm getting another pair.

Patagonia Long Haul Runners Shorts - Men's

Patagonia Long Haul Runners Shorts - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 March 31, 2008

I've had mine for a year and they've held up great. When I have time to just get away in the summer I live in these. They're lightweight, dry quickly, and are just easy to live with. The pockets are all I ever need: big enough to hold keys, ID, emergency light, a tasty snack... and they don't ever flop around when full. I just want another pair for when I'm too lazy to wash them during the week.

Bottom line: My standard for running/play shorts.

Great when Gore-Tex isn't

Patagonia Ready Mix Jacket - Men's

Patagonia Ready Mix Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 April 6, 2007

Fritz, the ready mix isn't a rain jacket and isn't intended to stand up to a downpour. It has a DWR coating but it's meant for activities where you're more worried about breathability than waterproofing- when you need a shell but a traditional 3 layer gtx or similar shell is going to turn into a sauna. You should have read up on what you were buying and its intended usage before you clicked "buy"

Bombproof

Arc'teryx Beta AR Jacket - Men's

Arc'teryx Beta AR Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 January 19, 2006

I've had my Beta AR for a little over a year now and it is great. It held off weather skiing in Ontario and entire weeks of rain in New Jersey with ease. Arc'teryx gear may be expensive, but it's still made in North America. The Beta AR has all of the standard features of today's all purpose hardshells without superfluous features to get in the way. Every exterior zipper is waterproof and the materials used are more substantial than in other Gore-tex XCR jackets of similar weights. At 18 oz, I have no regrets replacing my less-than waterproof Marmot Precip as weather protection on backpacking trips, the guaranteed weather protection is worth the extra 5 oz.

Great sandals nomatter the conditions

Chaco Z/1 Colorado Sandal - Men's

Chaco Z/1 Colorado Sandal - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 October 3, 2005

I bought a pair of Chacos almost four years ago and I'm still putting them through some pretty tough usage. These sandals last a lifetime and can be adjusted to fit perfectly in a matter of seconds - and there's no reason to worry about them coming undone because the ladderlock buckle holds the webbing strap securely in place no matter what. If I ever wear through them I'm buying another pair.

The perfect shirt

Patagonia Capilene Midweight Zip Tee L/S - Men's

Patagonia Capilene Midweight Zip Tee L/S - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 October 3, 2005

I've had mine for about three years now and it's still holding up great. It keeps me warm whether I'm rowing, skiing, sailing, or just hanging out. Works great with a wicking T underneath down to between 35 and 40 degrees if you're working hard and keeps you dry when you sweat. It's very breathable, but that works two ways, so throw on a wind-stopping layer if there's a heavy breeze.

Great jacket for outdoor activities

Patagonia Lightweight R4 Jacket - Men's

Patagonia Lightweight R4 Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 October 3, 2005

I've had an R2 jacket for almost four years now and it keeps me just as warm now as the day I bought it, but it wasn't meant to be worn without a shell in windy conditions, and I wanted a jacket that would cut the wind. I found a winner when I bought my Lightweight R4. The jacket looks great and is extremely functional. It weighs a little more than a traditional fleece because of the Windstopper lamination, but it's worth it when the wind starts to bite - plus it weighs less than a fleece and a shell together. The DWR coating plus the jacket's wicking abilities keep you dry if it starts to sprinkle, but don't push your luck with it...take a shell if you know it's going to rain. When you start to warm up the mesh lined pockets provide excellent ventilation without unzipping the main zipper and dumping all of your heat. The jacket will keep you warm above 45 degrees if you're not moving much, and keep you toasty down past freezing if you get moving - without the bulk and weight of the original R4. It's priced competitively, so like every other technical windproof fleece, I suggest looking for it on sale. But if you're willing to pay full price to finish filling your closet of fleece jackets it's definitely worth the money.
