Typical North Face product --- over priced, poor fit

The North Face Denali Wind Pro Fleece Jacket - Men's

The North Face Denali Wind Pro Fleece Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 3 February 5, 2011

This is a warm jacket, there is no doubt about it. In 40 * F, with wind, I was comfortable walking around with a T-shirt under.

However, as with most North Face products, the sizing is very odd. I am 5' 11", 165 lbs, so a pretty average sized guy. The small fits well enough through the torso and chest but is SHORT; conversely, the Medium was long enough, but I swam in it. Even with the small, there is waayyyyy too much cloth in the arms. The arms look like the arms of those tunics that medieval princes used to wear, where they balloon out from bicep to mid forearm and basically just look ridiculous. Even in the small, there was too much material in the body.

I can squeeze this under my MHW Typhoon shell for blizzards/cold rains, but it's TIGHT in the arms and restricts motion. Also VERY bulky for taking along on fall backpacking trips; I packed into the Maroon Bells this fall, and this took up a gigantic chunk of space in my pack.

All in all, a decent coat for around town and casual use. Would highly NOT recommend for outdoor activities, due to poor fit and sizing and use of extra material...only person whose arms would fit normally in the Denali Wind Pro sleeves would be Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Will be returning and looking for a similar product from Pata or Marmot.

Great for active use, not good if you're not active

The North Face Catalyst Down Jacket - Men's

The North Face Catalyst Down Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 3 December 8, 2010

I bought the Catalyst down 'jacket' about a week ago to keep me warm while walking to work and without looking like a marshmallow; two days it was 23* F at 7 AM and I nearly froze with this, a long sleeve dress shirt, and an undershirt. This piece is definitely more of a 'down sweater' type jacket; would be great for active winter sports as a MIDLAYER.

Piece is very high quality, Pertex fabric is incredibly nice and tough, and is down-proof. 800 fill down is really nice, but there's just not quite enough of it.

Will be returning and looking for something else.

Not worth the $

Marmot Approach Softshell Jacket - Men's

Marmot Approach Softshell Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 2 January 5, 2010

This jacket is in no way worth $120. It's little more than a windbreaker from Target. My $60 Columbia Ascender softshell is warmer, the same weight, and more wind and water repellant.

Pros and Cons:

Pros:
-Lightweight

Cons:
-Uninsulated, COLD
-water RESISTANT not repellant. Jacket soaks quickly in even medium rain showers. Granted it's not a rain coat, but you'd expect a little more for $120.
-does not block wind
-short length. I am 6' 1" and ordered a large, which barely came to the top of my pants.
-TIGHT! The large size barely fit me, and I am average build: 6' 1", 170 lbs. The chest and shoulders were skin tight and constrict movement.

Bottom line: buy for fashion statement, not functionality.

Hi all:

I am buying this as a combination Birthday/Valentine's gift for my fiancee.

She is 5' 10", 135 lbs, 34DD, 30" waist. What would be a good size for her?

Thank you!

Osprey Packs Kestrel 38 Backpack - 2200-2300cu in

Osprey Packs Kestrel 38 Backpack - 2200-2300cu in

Rating for this product: 5 May 28, 2008

This is by far the best backcountry-adventure / overnight pack I have ever owned. I actually bought it for school. As a medical school student, I routinely carry about 30 pounds worth of textbooks, notepads, and a laptop on my back. Other backpacks would hurt my shoulders and my neck. This pack is designed to carry weight. You can perfectly adjust the sternum strap, shoulder straps, and waist straps to distribute the weight evenly across your back and hips. Since I've been using this, my back and neck have not hurt once.

I have also taken this camping in the Utah desert in and around Moab multiple times. The Airscape back panel keeps you from sweating profusely in that region, as other packs are prone to cause. In addition, the hydration pocket area is a godsend, freeing your hands from searching for water bottles.

Also looks great!
A good pack! Great job Osprey!
