ice tools to get to skiing

Petzl Aztar Ice Axe

October 2, 2009

These tools are a nice blend of weight and ice performance. I find them perfect for use in a mixed snow and ice scenario with the intent to do some skiing. They are just heavy enough to plant nicely, but not so heavy as to force you to adjust your skiing.

Moment M1 Alpine Ski

October 5, 2009

This ski is stiffer than everything than the Bsquad... the ants and gotomas are kinda noodly, the phantoms not so much... but still not mega stiff.

The M1 is a very stiff ski. you flex it and you think "wow that's stiff but i can manage it.

the B-squad however is crazy stupid stiff... you flex it and you question your athletic ability, and whether you will even be able to ski it or not...

Go with the 176. Girls I know your size ski Stowe VT all winter on 176s... you will be happy when it's really deep and soft, and if you are a good skier, won't notice the difference on the not so deep and soft days

K2 Kung Fujas Alpine Ski

October 5, 2009

The rocker on these skis isn't that substantial. With only a 5/30, I don't see these being terribly squirley on all but the iciest of groomers. They are very similiar to the 07/08 rockered Seth, and that had great groomer railing potential... once you are up on edge the ski is decambered anyway, and the rocker is taken out of the equation...

Black Diamond Focus Speed Adjust Harness - Men's

October 5, 2009

I believe that the Momentum has two adjustment straps on the waist, whereas the Focus only has one. I find the single strap on the Focus to be sufficient...

Also there is NO gear loop on the Momentum which is a big downer to me..

Not really sure if there is any other differences besides that. Perhaps surprisingly the Momentum is a tad lighter, but I'd say it's not a game breaking weight... I like my Focus. Seems like the prices are about the same these days so I'd go with what I know

V.I.O. POV.1 Camera Package

Rating for this product: 4 October 4, 2009

There are pleny of places to review the tech specs on this camera. It has serious issues with exposure which have ruined several of my better shots, hopefully the new firmware will fix the problem. The biggest thing for me is the ease of use, just turn it on and go. It doesn't slow you down much and doesn't piss your buddies off.

This is a great light weight athletic cut (a.k.a. runs small) vest. I was amazed ow warm it was for the weight. It is my go to layer for when things start getting a little chilly.

Marker Duke 16 Ski Binding

As long as your BSL is in the range you should be fine. Remember however that there is a large range of BSL's for various boots of the same foot size. Just make sure you don't limit your boot options in the future if you want to go with a larger boot of if you want get a boot that has a long BSL for its size.

These things are awesome, tons of energy, and they taste good. These are way easier to eat than gels. They are a little pricey but there are enough blocks for 2-3 servings in each package.

Good skis, and can use for touring

Armada ANT Pro Alpine Ski

Rating for this product: 4 October 2, 2009

My friend Greg tours on these skis, and he says all the time that they are a nice weight for touring. He and I did a pretty big day of almost 10K vert, and 13 miles, myself on dynafit/dps and Greg on Duke/ants, and he managed to keep up. He's usually a pretty big wimp so that must mean they really do pair nicely with touring equipment. You can see him skiing a steep snow gully overhanging a giant ice bulge in the picture. Seems like he's really enjoying them.

Dynafit TLT Vertical FT Binding

October 2, 2009

I would say the key to using the paper template is making sure (and then checking three or four times) that you have the centerline perfectly marked. That is the hardest part. Also make sure you have the right bits to drill into the skis. Smaller diameter for wood core, bigger diameter for metal. That is a mistake you won't make twice

Smith Troy Lee Helmet

October 1, 2009

I have used prodigy turbo fans and they do a good job preventing fog. You still can't hike in it or anything but when just skiing around the turbo fans are a big help. They don't fit as well as the regular prodigies but it works and is worth is for the reduced fogging.

Jumping Shoes

Salomon Tech Amphibian 2 Shoe - Men's

Salomon Tech Amphibian 2 Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 October 1, 2009

I love cliff jumping and rope swings but I hate going barefoot. These shoes are perfect for me They are great for taking a little shock when you hit the water (or the bottom) from any height even when pushing or exceeding the century mark for height. When wearing them around they are super comfey with socks or no. I've used them for everything from working to as an approach shoe for climbing. The no sock comfort is great at the crag.

My main beef is that they take a very long time to dry out considering that they are a water shoe.

Dynafit TLT Vertical + Comfort Ski Brakes DO NOT USE

Dynafit TLT Vertical + Comfort Ski Brakes DO NOT USE

Rating for this product: 4 October 1, 2009

I skied FT12's on DPS W105's without brakes for most of a season without brakes but picked some up. Yes you save a little weight without them but you spend all sorts of time worrying about weather they will take off on you or not. When you are skiing something sketchy there are plenty of other things you should be worrying about.

I got 8 of these 3 years ago when I started climbing at Rumney regularly. They are all still going strong. They aren't the lightest but they are just a great all around beater sport draw. They have a very nice clip to them and the webbing/thong combination keeps the lower carabiner firmly in place at all times.

Confidence

Marker Duke 16 Ski Binding

Rating for this product: 4 October 1, 2009

AT rigs are all about compromise. With these bindings on you won't be winning any rando-races but you will have all the confidence you need in them when it counts. Big airs, straightlines, no fall zones, the bindings won't give you an excuse to turn back. I have 2 pairs of dukes and 2 pairs of dynafits. They each have their place. The duke is for charging hard, if you are doing anything else go with something lighter. I have not had durability issues but know people who have.

Patagonia Active Classic Boxer - Men's

Patagonia Active Classic Boxer - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 October 1, 2009

These are the only Boxers I wear in the outdoors. They are impossible to kill and are extremely comfortable. I think It is very important to include synthetic underwear in a layering system. What good are all the fancy outer layers if there is cotton right next to your skin? These aren't just a alternative to cotton they are way better. Its also nice to have a technical layer that has the cut and feel of regular underwear.

Backcountry Access Carbon 260 Avalanche Probe

Backcountry Access Carbon 260 Avalanche Probe

Rating for this product: 5 October 1, 2009

I like this probe a lot even though I managed to break one (it was a ridiculous EC ice lens and I was a little over zealous). BCA was very prompt in replacing it. Other than that though its a great probe, easy to set up, good measurements, long enough so your buddies don't give you disapproving looks and its light as hell.

Warmth Statement

Hestra Heli 3-Finger Glove

Rating for this product: 5 October 1, 2009

I'll admit it looking "cool" is not my highest priority. Being warm however is a priority. These gloves will keep you warm, give you enough dexterity to tie knots or adjust other gear and if you care for the leather they will last, last, last. removable liners are the best thing ever just behind the ginormous cuffs. If you work in the mountains or just spend lots of time out there and durability and function are your top priorities these are the goves for you. If you are wondering how the color will look with your cotten Tall-T and baggy pants they probably aren't the glove for you.
