Salomon Elite 8 Skate Ski

September 7, 2009

The short answer is no. If you are really good at waxing you could take a skate ski and make it work for classic, but it would be less than ideal. A waxless classic ski (the kind with scales in the middle) would be extremely taxing to skate with. If you are looking for some good cross training for cycling and go skate style. I ditched the trainer years ago in favor of skate skis and loved it. It is much easier to get an aerobic workout from skating right away than it is from classic style. I would also suggest you take a lesson so you are less likely to form bad habits that become hard to break down the road.

Colnago C50 Carbon Road Frameset

August 24, 2009

It used to be that traditional frames flexed a little bit more since the overall geometry was bigger. However, with as stiff as frames have been getting the difference in flex between the two would be minimal. Sloping frames do tend to react a little quicker when cornering and accelerating than traditional frames but it sounds like that's not a big priority for you.
I would say go for the traditional if you're going to be doing longer rides without racing much.

Shimano Dura-Ace Hollowtech Double Crankset

May 20, 2009

Not completely true.
1st, if you change to this particular crankset you will need to get a matching bottom bracket.
2nd, you might be able to tune the front derailleur to shift a double instead of a triple but it will not be very smooth or consistent, you would be better off getting a front derailleur for a double instead.
3rd, your current rear derailleur is a long cage model which is used to handle the longer chain req'd by triples. Running a double would shorten the chain and cause your current derailleur to not function properly.

Try giving the pump handle a quarter turn after it is on the valve, or

Salomon XT Hawk Trail Running Shoe - Men's

Salomon XT Hawk Trail Running Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 2 May 15, 2009

My favorite attribute of the shoe is how light and comfy it felt. My 8.5's weighed in at 11 oz. even. It felt like a running shoe, not a trail shoe, and as a consequence the XT Hawk offered little protection under foot on technical rocky terrain. The forefoot felt close to the ground but the heel was little more elevated than I prefer for trail running. The forefoot of the shoe feels completely disconnected from the mid to rear part of the shoe, and flexed considerably more than I am used to, giving me a blister at the flex point in the arch of both feet. The shoe felt right at home on the pavement that I used to connect to a separate section of trail and would serve someone well that needs a shoe for non-technical trails and occasional road running.
Pros: lightweight, lacing system, nice insoles, toe protection.
Cons: no protection under foot, considerable mid-sole flex.

Easton EC90 SLX Wheel Set - Tubular

May 14, 2009

Based on your weight I would definitely say yes. However, riding tubulars as your "most occasion" kind of wheelset is an expensive tire option, since you would have to carry an extra tubular tire in case of a flat. You might want to consider a clincher wheelset instead that takes a standard tube.

Good, despite being slightly unconventional

Suunto Altimax Sport Altimeter Watch

Suunto Altimax Sport Altimeter Watch

Rating for this product: 3 May 11, 2009

I bought this specifically for trail running and being able to track vertical gain. Initially I purchased the Vector for this same purpose but once I realized that I could not view the current logbook (the amount of ascent and descent) that I was recording I returned it for the Altimax, willing to give up the compass feature. I have found after several outings of 3000' to 6500' of vertical that it's been within +/- 100' on known routes.
Cons: I have small wrists and it's a large watch, both in diameter and depth. The stopwatch is a bit quirky. The seconds read on the top line, time of day on the middle line, and hours and mins on the bottom line. The split timer doesn't work like a normal stopwatch, where it starts a new timer, this one just pauses it so you can read the display while it continues to run in the background. Getting to the stopwatch function requires at least two to four pushes of the button (depending on the mode you're in). Starting/stopping the logbook and stopwatch are two separate functions (not a deal breaker, just a pain sometimes if you forget).
Good watch, very accurate in my experience, just a little cumbersome to navigate.

Clinchers are held onto the rim with a bead that seats itself to the rim using the pressure from the removable tube.
Tubular tires have a tube sewn inside of them and are glued on to the rim.
More than likely you have a clincher style rim. If your rim has side walls that extend about a half-inch above the outer base of the main rim body then you have a clincher. A tubular rim will appear to be solid, without walls protruding from the edges.

A cheaper option would be a 12-27 cassette, assuming that is bigger than the one you have. 27 teeth (the size of the largest cog) is the most the short cage derailleurs can handle. You could go with a larger cassette (like a mtn bike cassette) but you would have to buy the long cage rear derailleur which has a 37 tooth capacity.
Good luck with your ride and have fun.

Shimano Ultegra Hollowtech Double Crankset

March 13, 2009

You can use this with an 8sp setup and it will work pretty good. If you want it to work better then use a 9sp chain, which will work with an 8sp cassette just fine. The only concern with that is that the cassette isn't too worn out and mated to the chain that's currently on there.I also own an old steel frame that I truly love and one thing to consider is that a stiffer crankset will only expose how "soft" the steel has become in your frame. You can check this by standing next to your bike and tilting it away from your body. Put the pedal closest to you in the 6 o'clock position and step on it while looking down at the bottom bracket. Check for flex in the frame or crankset.

March 3, 2009

1>http://www.lookcycle.com/products/http://www.lookcycle.com/products/data/geometrie/geometrie586.pdf2> That's a tough question to answer. All of the Look carbon bikes with carbon forks will make for a good century ride. However if you don't race then you might consider not going as high end. Generally speaking the higher end frames are stiffer for better power transfer. While this is good for racing it's not always desirable for comfortable riding, especially if you are fairly new to cycling. Bottom line, you can't go wrong with the Look framesets.

Shimano Dura-Ace 7800 Rear Derailleur

February 18, 2009

No. Even though the description does not specify, the picture indicates this is the short cage version. The long cage version has the same 7800 model number except with a GS added on, i.e. 7800 GS (long cage) 7800 SS for short cage.It might be worth giving them a call to go check the actual box in the warehouse to see if it is a GS model or not since it's not specified.

The North Face Chameleon Hydration Pack

February 16, 2009

Can you turn the blue ring on the bite valve 90 degrees and get flow? Another thing, on these types of bite valves you you have bite down quite hard the first time to open up seal, you should hear a small pop. After that the bite doesn't have to be that hard to get fluid to flow.

Polar CS200 Cycling Heart Rate Monitors

February 14, 2009

If you are only tracking heart rate and not speed, cadence, etc. then go with something a bit less expensive like the RS100. You can upload results to your computer and track your progress as well as using it for other activities. If the stationary bike is similar to to what you find in a gym it really isn't worth the trouble setting up the system on that kind of equipment. If the stationary bike is a bike that you can ride on the road and you are using it on a trainer then you could use something like this.
