An overnight walk to the Blue Mountains World Heritage Area's famous Blue Gum Forest would have ended wet and cold had it not been for our new Pinnacle bags. Instead it was just wet.

A warm Saturday turned grey and thundery as I unrolled our tent, only to find I had left poles and pegs at home. Avoiding withering looks, I did what I could with fallen branches and rope, which even local wildlife found amusing.

As lightening turned to rain and we huddled under our humpy, our Pinnacle bags eased any overnight tension as we were warm, hot even - albeit a bit wet - even when temperatures fell below 0F.

After more than 20 years of hiking and camping it was a great humbling experience and it has shaken me out of any complacency about the gear I carry. Note to self: be warm AND dry.
