Yakima FatCat 6 w/Locks

Yakima FatCat 6 w/Locks

Rating for this product: 4 January 18, 2011

The main feature I appreciated about this product was how it works on all types of OEM crossbars. I installed this on OEM bars on a Honda CR-V in fifteen minutes with an extra pair of hands. Elliptical crossbars... I was happy with the road noise... unnoticeable. The locks are moody. You have to jiggle the key a bunch to manipulate it, but that is nothing new for these types of racks. I fit two 166-167 boards with bindings. I tried to over-under stack them and found I would have to remove the bindings on the lower board. I was a bit peeved my new Nidecker board got some rubs and scratches from where the clamps squeezed on the board. I would recommend if you are OCD about board damage, put a rag across the top to protect your baby. I like how the red latch draws attention to the locks. I hope it is a deterrent. Perhaps crooks will just break a window to get something instead?

Lib Technologies Skunk Ape C2 BTX Snowboard - Wide

January 7, 2011

With a size 13 boot you will need to get the widest board out there. Make sure you check the dimensions for the waist. Your toes will probably hang over while carving if your rear binding is set close to zero. The waist measurement is 268mm at its narrowest... so if you are size 13 you may still have overhang problems. Look around for binding lifters... Palmer used to make some a while back. They help people with long feet.

I found the following site helpful setting up my Nidecker Ultralight wide 167. I use a forward stance to make sure my toes and heels don't drag when I carve.

DAKINE High Roller Snowboard Bag

September 3, 2010

Waaaay too big. I put my 167 into it and still have plenty of room. This bag is so long it just barely fits longwise in my short Tundra pickup. The three storage compartments are awesome. You can stash boots, helmet, bindings separately... then stack up several boards inside. Its a big quiver. If I was you I would go smaller.

Marmot Huntington Shirt - Short-Sleeve - Men's

Marmot Huntington Shirt - Short-Sleeve - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 September 3, 2010

Sizing is accurate. The waist is not too loose and holds to the line of your waist. I would call this shirt a "relaxed fit". The shirt arrived a wrinkly mess and I was a bit annoyed I would be spending time with my nemesis (the iron). I threw it in the dryer after misting it with water and it smoothed out nicely. The second button from the top is high enough to hold in the man hair without being so high to strangle you. The M button on the bottom is a nice detail and the pin striping looks classy. I would have cut the sleeves an inch shorter but they still break above my elbow. The color of the light brown seemed brighter to me in person. It appears almost milk chocolate online, but looked more tan like a military/police uniform.

Helly Hansen Alpha Shirt - Short-Sleeve - Men's

Helly Hansen Alpha Shirt - Short-Sleeve - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 September 3, 2010

The chest and shoulder measurements worked just fine for me. The waist left a ton of room for a beer gut. I would have preferred a more athletic cut. Shoulder blades do open up some when you stretch, but I found the shirt strained in the shoulders/armpits when I reached up for stuff on shelves. I like the fabric... it is naturally bunched up a bit, which initially annoyed me but I got over it. If you have muscular biceps you might find the sleeves a tad tight. Don't flex in the mirror. Nobody's watching. I looked. Despite the reviews of other HH shirts being undersized, I found this one to be fairly accurate prior to washing. It's comfy and I like wearing it.

K2 Snowboards Cinch CTC Snowboard Binding

K2 Snowboards Cinch CTC Snowboard Binding

Rating for this product: 5 July 24, 2010

I was intimidated by those Flow riders when I first started learning. I realized what I had been missing by not getting this style of binding from the beginning. The time you waste fumbling around after you get off the lift... the awkward steering with a loose rear foot... all gone. You just roll off the lifts and GO. After a few practice runs you start to feel like a skier rolling off the lift... and you get your lift ticket's worth of runs real quick. If you get stuck on some flats and have to walk, you don't seethe with frustration because you have take forever to stop and strap back in. I have last year's model. Would really like to find out how to get the canted footbeds on the old model. Anyone?

Half-day pass... Get your money's-worth!!!

K2 Snowboards Cinch CTC Snowboard Binding

K2 Snowboards Cinch CTC Snowboard Binding

Rating for this product: 5 March 18, 2010

I slapped these onto my new Ultralight XL and went up the mountain for some solo time on the mountain. Boy did I feel stupid for buying an all-day pass. I was once one of those boarders who sat on his tush... waddled over to the bench... stumbled and fumbled to strap my bindings on. I meditate on the lift... lead foot strapped in... trailing foot in the binding but loose... I cruise off the lift with my foot in place... turn... squat and lock!!! The poseurs with their Costco setups and backpacks full of beer glare at me in jealousy as I cruise down the mountain... Bye bye! The time you save by using these bindings was enough to make me smile. Knowing I could use them for quick entrances and exits was great... and all of the adjustability was still there. I must have done a whole day's runs in three hours. (Queue divine backlight, toothy grin, and church chorus.)

*Note cable tensioning and highback angle (forward back) are things you should get dialed in at home. These settings are tool sensitive.

Highback angle (left right) does not appear to be adjustable. I didn't even notice a difference.

If you look at the photos and videos on Youtube, you might get the impression there are many joints and moving components in this setup. You might rightfully suspect it had some effect on the support or stiffness of the binding. Using my old Burton Cartel bindings as my only basis for comparison, I believe these offered more stiffness, fewer pressure points, and the toe strap secured perfectly.

Final word: If you enjoy getting the most out of your day, want the flexibility to strap-in old-school while you learn to board... and then have the flexibility to take advantage of the easy in/out feature... you need this binding. It truly bridges the gap between the older technology and the intermediate/advanced rider bindings like offered by Flow.

Definite Improvement

Burton Ultra Capstrap - 09/10

Burton Ultra Capstrap - 09/10

Rating for this product: 4 February 10, 2010

I purchased these capstraps because the stock ones on my Cartel bindings were always slopping upward over my toes because I insist on riding a narrow board with big feet (Arbor Crossbow 166 with 11.5 K2 Raider Boots and Cartel bindings). These are much more secure. The addition of a heavily padded insole and these capstraps greatly diminished my first day foot pain this season. This feature should be standard, but having the option to upgrade was a definite improvement.

KUHL Rydr Pant - Men's

KUHL Rydr Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 January 7, 2010

Every season Kuhl comes out with another pair of trousers I hug every time they come out of the drier. I am still a fan of the Hi-Lo Cord from Kuhl because the rise measurement is perfect for big guys who are not ... ... fat. If you are a giant who managed to keep slim, congratulations. The Ryder satisfies the same requirements without the cord pattern on the fabric. The fabric of the Ryder is medium/heavy and has a soft/brushed feel to it. The pockets are ample but the cellphone pocket on the right thigh still won't fit my Iphone. The rise measurement (front waist to crotch to rear waist) is smaller than most high waisted pants (Mountain Khakis for instance) so the Ryder rests low on the waist. I like how Kuhl upgraded the embroidery of their logo and the washing and fabric information on the inside of the seat was almost fun to read. It really seemed a significant amount of thought to finish, fit, and detail were spent on this pant.

Don't let the dumpy photos fool you.

ALINE Footbed

ALINE Footbed

Rating for this product: 2 January 7, 2010

I'm a big guy who runs 50 minutes and am totally stoked I survived. I need a good foot bed to keep everything "alined". I have been a fan of superfeet for years. I purchased these because I'm always willing to try new products. My first impression of the ALINE system was my feet were happyhappyhappy walking around but I did notice something I had not from superfeet: a distinct stickiness between the footbed and my socks I had not experienced before. After mile 3 of a light 9:45 pace run, I realized I was blistering up when I had not before... on a foot I never blistered before... with dual layer socks that solved all my blistering problems before. The internal structure of the ALINE is super cool... so cool the manufacturer wants you to see the internals of the product. I feel there was no need for this. Superfeet has a very reliable anti-friction fabric which works really well. ALINE does not. I will use these insoles in dress shoes and perhaps this winter snowboarding. I will not use them for running, even though the first two miles felt pretty damn good, until I can find a way to cool down the friction from the sticky contact areas. I feel if ALINE addresses this concern their product will crush all competitors.

The RISE

KUHL Eiger Short - Men's

KUHL Eiger Short - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 September 8, 2009

What makes these shorts, and all products from the waist down, from Kuhl so desirable is the front and rear rise measurements. The waist is low and the crotch gusset is high. The rise on so many other pants make me walk like a penguin. These allow me to walk like a human being! The funny thing is that there is still room in the waist, hips, and thighs for people with muscular legs to experience a range of motion and freedom that other garments do not or refuse to provide. Kuhl is the fit for me.

KUHL Jacquard Shirt - Short-Sleeve - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 June 7, 2009

I bought the blue version in XL. Sleeves are a tad longer and narrower than I like, but there is a fair amount of flex in the fabric to make up for it. There are no gimmicks (weird zippers or wicking foo foo) with this shirt. It looks like you are wearing a shirt made up of a vertical bar code pattern with a tribal vertical design accent down your left side. Everything on in the blue version is very simple and classy. Just the type of shirt mother would want you to wear in public without having to wear an "old guys rule or Tommy Bahama" shirt.

The North Face Boulder Tramline Woven Shirt - Short-Sleeve - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 June 7, 2009

This shirt reminds me of my grandfather... the pattern... At first I was apprehensive of this shirt... and then I got my hands on the fabric. It is extremely light and moves across the skin with minimal friction. There is a horizontal opening for ventilation between the shoulder blades and mesh fabric underneath the shoulder area to assist with cooling down. Velcro holds the breast pockets closed... mesh on the inside of the pockets as well. Room for shoulders and FLEX-ability. I would have preferred a more trim fit about the ribcage, but it still has an athletic cut.

Mountain Hardwear Leno Shirt - Short-Sleeve - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 June 7, 2009

I bought the green version in XL. I read the "bad" review of this and had to chime in. This shirt looks great, doesn't strain when I flex my muscles, and has really cool vents I just noticed along the sides. The fabric feels like soft hospital sheets. Westyrun2180898 is right about the lack of any moisture transfer... I don't think this was intended to be a performance shirt. It has an athletic cut: broad shoulders and trim around the ribcage (not tight).

KUHL Hi-Lo Cord Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 May 18, 2009

I need a fit that's relaxed around the thighs and allows freedom of movement. This is my go-to pair of pants for everything. The fit is low on the waist. I am sad that I had to gripe about Backcountry not having these last season. I already have a few. I would recommend these to the guy who has muscular legs and hates a tight fit. Not baggy in the rear... girls can still admire what's there. These have a similar fit to the KUHL jean pant. All of the others have a much higher waist. I have learned that the hard way.

Wants to go fast and carve!!!

Arbor Crossbow Snowboard

Arbor Crossbow Snowboard

Rating for this product: 5 February 23, 2009

This is the only board I have used for the last two years. I prefer to carve down the mountain... not into performing tricks. I love the classy design elements that don't make me look like "ricky racer" or that guy with the Mickey Mouse gloves. Arbor's artwork is my favorite of the current designers. The middle of the board is narrow. The board floats through powder with confidence and control on blue/blacks. The divots in the bottom of the board are like those on a sushi chef's knife and allow me to track true on the annoying flats. I have noticed the top layer cracking on the edges, but I feel that was from not being careful packing and taking my board on planes. My toes and heels barely stay out of the snow when I am hard on my edges.I am 6'3" with 11.5 feet... I bought the 166 model. I would not recommend this board for anyone bigger than me. Look for those "wide" boards if you are bigger. I am constantly blasting past my friends with freestyle boards when things get a tad flat, and that means less pushing yourself out of annoying places. I am using K2 Raider boots and Burton Cartel bindings with this board.

Perfect Replacement

Suunto T-series Strap

Suunto T-series Strap

Rating for this product: 3 November 28, 2008

But the question must be asked... "Why did you have to replace it to begin with?" I know I have powerful arms and the physique of a Greek god... but the rubber of even Swatch watches I wore when I was a kid never ripped clean off when I was removing a long sleeved shirt. The first strap ripped and the other ripped one week later. I have had the initial straps for about one year. The trade-off here is the light weight of the watch versus durability. I really like how light the watch is but I was disappointed in the durability of the watch band considering the price paid.

The only thing I have to add to all of the fantastic reviews is: If you want this jacket to last, you have to treat it right. If you have thick thighs watch out.. Very narrow at the thighs. KUHL Kuhl Jean Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 October 10, 2008

When my hi-low cords from Kuhl are in the washer I break out these. This is a warm weather pant with plenty of room for muscular thighs or thermal underwear. The interior fabric is... I don't quite know how to describe it... it does not stick to your skin or hair... doesn't cause any static charging... The construction of the pants allows for plenty of room to lunge without feeling like you are going to bust a seam, while at the same time not sacrificing the butt-cupping properties my girlfriend likes in my jeans. It has a cellphone pocket on the right thigh that doesn't fit my Iphone at 2.5 inches wide... if your cell is 2.25 or less you should be fine. I am 37x32 and these pants sit now on my waist without a belt.

YAKTRAX Yaktrax Stable Trax Insoles

YAKTRAX Yaktrax Stable Trax Insoles

Rating for this product: 3 October 10, 2008

I spend the majority of my workshift on my feet with 25 pounds of gear on my body. I spent today with the Yaktrax insoles replacing my green Superfeet. The Yaktrax insole has a bubble (for lack of a better term) in the middle of the arch support area. This immediately caused me discomfort. I recall when I first used Superfeet and it was instant relief and the superfeet had smoother contours. The stiffness of the Superfeet is was what solved my pronation problems. The Stable Trax insoles are softer at the heel and ball than Superfeet. I still found the support better than stock insoles, but I am going to put them into my casual shoes... Not my running shoes or my work boots. The other reviewer probably just has differently shaped feet than me.

To me size and fit is everything. I really don't care about any product unless the fit is dialed-in. This shirt is an athletic cut. It accommodates broad shoulders and a slimmer torso. The front of the collar is cut lower than the sides and rear. I found this a pleasant design accent which keeps the collar from irritating me. A concealed left breast pocket has an internal button slit for your compact audio player. I'll comment later about the reported "anti-funk" properties later...

My first donning of this item made me feel a bit scratchy but that is a very minor gripe. If you are 6-3 & 230 with long torso the XL is a slimming and fitted look ... Doesn't look like you ordered too small.

Oakley Large Rolling Gear Bag

Oakley Large Rolling Gear Bag

Rating for this product: 4 November 13, 2007

Fit and finish... This company really thinks about the products it makes. I stuffed all my winter gear into it and still had room for my snowboard boots. I am afraid there will be enough room to inspire my girlfriend to buy stuff to bring home. The compartments are logically laid out and easily allow you to separate clean/dirty items... and the mesh is nice because you can see what you are looking for before you rip your hair out wondering where things went. Small elastic tie downs for zippers are a bit of an irritation, but the classy look of the entire package definitely says: "I am an Oakley snob... fear me." I happen to like that.. and I am an Oakley snob. The identity badge is my only gripe. You are supposed to write you info on an alloy card. I fear my information could easily be rubbed off.

Mountain Hardwear MHW Origami T-Shirt Short-Sleeve - Men's

Mountain Hardwear MHW Origami T-Shirt Short-Sleeve - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 November 13, 2007

Really dig this shirt... I am not going to slight it because I screwed up and undersized. I can wear L in Mountain Hardware button down shirts quite comfortably. Their T shirts, however are another matter. Their cotton must shrink. Go with the XL if you are tall and husky like me!!! 6-3/230. This guy is definitely an under layer now. I have had no wrinkling problems with it out of the dryer like I have had with Reef and Oakley shirts from this website.

KUHL CragRunner Pant - Men's

KUHL CragRunner Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 3 November 9, 2007

I really like the cut and fit of these Kuhl pants. They are for guys who actually have some muscle in their thighs and want pants they can comfortably to a "lunge" in and not squash their privates. Zippered front pocket is reminiscent of more... female design accents... and cannot hold any mountain man's wallet. The stiff/starchy fabric panels are stitched in a way which makes you look like you are actually wearing leather chaps!!! Kuhl makes other pants in similar cut but not so... funny looking: "Hi-Low Cord" I acquired a pair of those and really ... really ... really like them.

Oakley Gas Can Polo - Men's

Oakley Gas Can Polo - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 October 1, 2007

Really like the cut of this shirt. Simple and classy... no loud patterns. Doesn't look like you are slouching at the shoulders. Long semi-fitted and slim lines. Bought the black and beige. Washed and didn't shrink. I usually buy large for polos and short sleeve button downs. Oakley is like Prana: sized for stick people. Size up if you have are "stout".

Burton Board Sack

My 166 Arbor Crossbow slipped in real nice with bindings still on. Has a pretty small accessory pocket for nothing more than socks and tools. Hook and loop closure business card id pocket. You can sling it over your shoulder or wear it like a backpack. We'll see how it handles air travel this winter...

Oakley!!! 6" Boot - Not for slippery surfaces.

Oakley SI Assault 6in Boot - Men's

Oakley SI Assault 6in Boot - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 August 20, 2007

Used these as a "duty" boot for a year. Very good ankle and arch support. Wide toe box. Laces had to be wrapped around ankle to tie ... and would loosen all the time. Running is not out of the question with these shoes/boots. Fantastic in dirt... suicide on wet asphalt or road with a hint of oil. Super comfortable hiking and the sole wears well. Sized down: I usually wear an 11.5 Asics and in these I can still wear thick wool socks in these at 11.0. I HIGHLY recommend the new 8" boot from Oakley, if you can find it. Same size but way cooler (temperature) with arch vents/drainage holes.

GPS Pod Unreliable

Suunto Multisport Pack Heart Rate Monitor

Suunto Multisport Pack Heart Rate Monitor

Rating for this product: 3 August 14, 2007

Since I have submitted my last review I have been a tad bit annoyed with the reliability of the GPS Pod. The Pod initializes and does not acquire a signal 50% of the time to generate speed and distance readings. This has happened at the beach and in the hills to me... So I am of the opinion the whole "line of sight" with satellites is not an issue. These problems started to occur after I changed the batteries when the first set went kerplunk. Beware.

Suunto GPS POD

Suunto GPS POD

Rating for this product: 4 July 17, 2007

Out of the box and working in fifteen minutes. A bit of experimentation with buttons proved fruitless because the watch menu system does not function like standard digital watches. Once I calmed down and read the manual all worked and sync-ed up quickly. The only negative thing I have to say after the first run: I am disappointed the GPS Pod has no ability to recharge itself. Positive: It was way lighter than I expected.

Oakley Fingerprint Pant - Men's

Oakley Fingerprint Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 November 7, 2005

These pants slipped on like a glove right out of the box. If you have husky hips and thighs, no worries. They don't fit small like Mountain Hardware, Fox, or some Prana pants. Plus, they still shape your rear without being dumpy. There is some embroidery accents that some might find goofy. I dug the red stitching and the detailing around the pockets. These also came with an abundance of belt loops, another sign of a spiffy pair of pants. This is an “any situation” pair of pants that will fit a guy with larger proportions. The only thing negative might be that the inseam came a bit longer than I prefer for 38/32in pants which fit me at 6ft 3in, 220lb. The fabric is soft with the slightest hint of stretch.
