Black Diamond Method Alpine Touring Boot - Men's

Black Diamond Method Alpine Touring Boot - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 February 6, 2010

I have only had these for a couple months, but so far so good in the comfort department. Can't vouch for their durability yet. They are pretty warm, almost to warm when touring. The walk mode functions great. I have also done half a day of walking across a scree field and the rubber soles hold their own on granite. I do kind of wish I would have waited a year for the new efficiency line that they are coming out with though. They look/sound pretty dang sweet.

Patagonia R1 Hooded Fleece Pullover - Men's

Patagonia R1 Hooded Fleece Pullover - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 February 6, 2010

This is by far the best layer for any high output winter activity. You won't find me skiing or on a SAR call without my R1 Hoody. I love how the hood covers a lot of your face when it is fully zipped up and it is still easy to fit a ski helmet over top. I also really like how it is overly long on the torso so it easily tucks under ski pants. My only beef is that the lining along the zipper in front is scratchy if you don't wear a light base layer. It is still easily a 5/5 though.

Patagonia R3 Fleece Jacket - Men's

Patagonia R3 Fleece Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 January 16, 2009

I got this jacket as an "around town fleece" but it turns out that I wear it for just about everything now. The R2 is just a little to light for the winter season but this fleece is pefect under a shell for skiing and looks good downtown too. Others say it is a little loose but for me a medium is perfect. 6'1" 170 lbs.

Bomber Pants

Patagonia Rubicon Pant - Men's

Patagonia Rubicon Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 January 16, 2009

These are some serious duty pants. Really thick fabric but yet stretchy and comfortable. I love them. It has great pockets, four in all and two huge vents. The cuffs on the bottom fit around a ski boot and also have a sinch incase you want to put them around smaller boots. The waistband is very comfortable and has an internal adjustment to get the fit just right. I have worn these pants through many days of skiing front and backcountry, ice climbing, and up to 19,400 feet climbing in Ecuador. I can wear these pants with a single baselayer down to -20 F and still be comfortable. If this pair ever wears out I will buy the Rubicon pants again.

Needs more Vestibule Space

Sierra Designs Stretch Dome 3 Tent 3-Person 4 Season

Sierra Designs Stretch Dome 3 Tent 3-Person 4 Season

Rating for this product: 4 January 16, 2009

This is a great tent for the most part. I really only use this tent for winter adventures and it holds up great to wind and snow even up at 15,000 feet and down to -20 F. It fits three medium sized people easily. The walls come up near vertical to give more head room which is nice when the weather keeps you inside. The poles are a bit light and it is possible to bend them out of shape durring set up. On some cold nights it can get a little condensation buildup on the walls but not to bad. The biggest problem I have with this tent is the small vestibule space. The front is adequate for putting on boots if you sit inside the tent with your feet hanging out the door into the vestibule. The back however hardly has enough room for three pairs of mountaineering boots with out stacking them. It would be nice if the footprint would come out into the vestibule space as well.

Black Diamond Alpine CF Trekking Poles - 1 Pair

Black Diamond Alpine CF Trekking Poles - 1 Pair

Rating for this product: 5 January 16, 2009

Great all around pole. I use them for glacier travel, skiing, hiking, mountaineering, ect. The flick lock is a great system that is far better then the twist to tighten system of other poles. I love how small they collapse for being able to strap them to a backpack when things get technical. I recently fell while skiing with these poles and somehow managed to crush the top of one pole with my arm (carbon fibers only downfall). Thankfully Backcountry.com has a lifetime guarantee and I had a new pair in three days. BD has changed the lower part of the grip since my last pair and now instead of having a ribbed foam grip like the picture above they have put a simple sandpaper like surface below the main grip. It also now comes with both the winter and summer baskets.

Gerber Paraframe I Knife

Gerber Paraframe I Knife

Rating for this product: 4 May 4, 2007

I always carry a pocket knife with me where ever I go and usually I can keep a knife for around two or three months before it falls out of my pocket and is lost. This knife is the exception. The clip is really strong and holds well clipped to inside of my pocket. I have had this knife for a little over a year and have only had to sharpen it a few times. I have owned a lot of more expensive knives and this relatively cheap one is the best one I have found yet.

Salomon XA Pro 3D XCR Trail Running Shoe - Men's

Salomon XA Pro 3D XCR Trail Running Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 May 4, 2007

These shoes are so comfortable and I love the Gore-tex. I wear these shoes for basically everything from work to casual to trail running to hiking so they get a lot of use and abuse and are holding up decent except for two areas. The first thing that I think could be improved is the stiching. The seams are starting to come apart around the toe where the shoe flexes but they are still 100% waterproof. Also the bottoms are wearing out a little faster then I would have hoped. But once these are shot I will buy the same model to replace them.

Patagonia Capilene 1 Crew - Men's

Patagonia Capilene 1 Crew - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 November 10, 2006

I bought this for a base layer to wear on my newfound love of Alpine Touring. When skinning up I get super hot and this performs as promised by wicking the sweat away and keeping me cool. My only beef is the sleeves tend to hike up my arm when I am moving them around a lot. Other then that I wear it around even when I am just sitting around at home because it is so comfortable.

Opening up a whole new world of skiing

Rating for this product: 5 November 10, 2006

I just got into alpine touring this year. I have a couple of days on the Naxos so far, and I love them. I can skin faster then my friend on his Freeriders even though he could beat me in a foot race any day. I have these mounted on Fischer Atua with Black Diamond ascension skins. I am using an Alpine boot and I have not had any discomfort. If I have any problems I will throw them up here, but so far they rock my world.

Brunton Atlas MNS GPS

Brunton Atlas MNS GPS

Rating for this product: 5 August 9, 2005

I have only slightly used 3 other GPS other then the Brunton and they were Etreks, but in my opinion the Atlas MNS is a far superior product. I love it. The ability to put it in sleep mode and just use the magnetic compass is a great feature. Also, the screen is nice and big. It is just much easier to operate.
