Oakley Jawbone Sunglasses

Oakley Jawbone Sunglasses

Rating for this product: 5 August 2, 2012

Everyone I know swear by these glasses and how great they are. I was holding out for awhile but after seeing and hearing about them all the time I picked up a pair. They have lived up to the hype and more. I use them for road biking and will use them for mountain biking, ice climbing and pretty much anything outdoors. They fit really well, stay on my face and head with great grippers instead of tension (no headaches). Changing the lenses are a snap, literally.

Patagonia Fezzman Shirt - Long Sleeve - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 August 2, 2012

This is a great shirt however the fits vary from the newer colors vs the older ones. The new colors fit a little bit slimmer than the old ones. I am 5'9" and 180lbs and a medium fits well. I have broad shoulders but a small waist. The fabric is great for this price point.

La Sportiva Batura 2.0 GTX Mountaineering Boot - Men's

La Sportiva Batura 2.0 GTX Mountaineering Boot - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 July 13, 2012

Ever since I heard about these boots last year I have been eagerly waiting for their arrival. I own a pair of Nepal Evo's and Spantik’s and love them both. However I needed something in between that could kill it on the vertical, keep me warm above 14k but be lighter and less bulky then a double boot. Boom! La Sportiva has made all the upgrades in the Batura 2.0 GTX that the Batura needed. Super happy I held out. Although the plan was to test them on the Liberty Ridge route of Mt. Rainier a week ago, I had the unfortunate luck of separating my shoulder 2 weeks before I was to go. However I can give you a fit, feel and quality review until I am able to really test them. As for fit they are a little bit more narrow in the heal and arch then the Nepal Evo but I think that is due to more padding and insulation. The toe box I feel is a better shape than the Nepal Evo and more like the Spantiks. These boots are super light! Thanks to shedding weight in the sole with a Carbon honeycomb midsole this boot is ahead of the competition. I tested the sole stiffness and these are by far stiffer than the Nepal Evo’s. The new lacing system is bomber and you can really get your heal locked in. Zipper and gaiter are simple and easy to use even with mittens on. One thing I would note is it has a very low cuff compared to the Spantik’s and Nepal Evo’s. I mean really low. I had my concerns with this, that I would not get the stiffness and heel lock needed for the vertical stuff. However with the lacing system and stiffness of the sole I did not get any heel lift when walking up stairs on the toes. The flex in the ankle is comparable to the Evo’s. I know this is not a proper test, but it did put my mind at ease. I am confident that these will perform for what I need them for. I will update my review once I heal up and get at it. Also a good review can be found on the prototype model here http://coldthistle.blogspot.com/search?q=batura+2.0

It works and does what it needs to, but it takes some work to get the stove (V2 whisperlite International) snug and locked in. I would say that if you have the extra money and want a stand that will last, get one.

Julbo Micropore Sunglasses - Alti Arc 4+ Lens

Rating for this product: 4 June 9, 2012

Looks like old school mountaineering glasses but with new technology. This was actually the only mountaineering glasses with Spectron lenses that would fit my Asian face. I know there are Asian fit sunglasses out there but none of which are specific glacier glasses. A bit heavier than the other styles since the lenses are glass, but other than that great glasses.

Petzl Ouistiti Full Body Climbing Harness - Kids'

Rating for this product: 4 June 9, 2012

Bought for my nephew who is 3 and also based upon another review. Leg loops are a bit large but to be expected since he is only 3. Holds him really secure and looks like bomber construction, probably better than some adult harnesses. Only criticism I have is that maybe the leg loop area between his legs could be padded but other than that, highly recommended for a youngster starting off.

Honey Stinger Stinger Waffle - 16 Pack

Rating for this product: 4 May 31, 2012

Since I bought these I can not stop eating them. They are great tasting and are a good snack for bike ride or hike. When cold out ( tested at 45F and below) they will get as hard as a rock, which is pretty common for all bar type energy foods. Also if you are looking to get some serious calories or energy you might want to look for a larger snack. But you can do what I do and bring 6 of them to eat. Warning: do not share with friends otherwise they will keep coming back for more, leaving less for you.

You will not find a better bag. I had the older model in a regular and just got the new one in a Long to have more space for drying clothes while I sleep. With the older one I have used it all over from -20 to 30 degrees F. I have done tons of research and tested many bags and this one just kills it.

MSR Fuel Bottle

MSR Fuel Bottle

Rating for this product: 4 May 21, 2012

I have used these bottles from Denali to the Cordillera Blanca's in Peru and have never had any issues. They are lightweight, never leak, and simply work. The reason I give it 4 stars is because the new bottles come with the child safe caps. If it gets cold enough and the cap has snow or water in it, it can freeze locked. I replaced mine with the old caps which they sell separately.

Almost "Love it"

Patagonia Merino 3 MW Zip-Neck Top - Men's

Patagonia Merino 3 MW Zip-Neck Top - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 May 20, 2012

This is a great layering piece, does the job and performs like all of the Patagonia Merino layers. However the arms are a little to long (by and inch). I know it has the "thumbholes" and is supposed to be a little longer, but the thumbholes are not in the sleeve and are straps at the end of the cuff. So its to long since the strap is at the end of the sleeve, whereas other thumbhole shirts have the thumbhole 1.5-2" from the end of the cuff. Colors are dope.

Patagonia Merino 2 LW T-Shirt - Short-Sleeve - Men's

Patagonia Merino 2 LW T-Shirt - Short-Sleeve - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 May 20, 2012

This is a great t-shirt. I had to change all of my layers to Merino since I started developing bad skin reactions to synthetic materials when I sweat. It wicks great, no smell, nice and lightweight so you stay cool and fits well. The one complaint I would have is that it takes to much work to wash. You have to wash on gentle cycle and with "woolite" or similar product, then should hang dry. This is to keep it from pilling, developing holes and premature wear, which is pretty much how all wool's should be washed. Like I said a lot of work, so I just do all my wools at once (socks, layers and dress sweaters)

It's a cool looking hat, great quality and keeps my noggin warm. My only issue is that its huge (long), and I have a large head to begin with. I originally bought this beanie hoping to rock it in the mountains under my climbing helmet. Since its to big I will use it as a hat to roam the streets with, which is fine since it looks cool.

First Hike/Climb in them

SmartWool PhD Outdoor Medium Crew Sock

SmartWool PhD Outdoor Medium Crew Sock

Rating for this product: 4 April 24, 2012

So I just bought these and decided to test them out on Longs Peak, CO over the weekend. I personally like my sock thinner than most in winter conditions and these were the right weight. They fit great, I am a size 10 shoe and 10.5 Mountaineering boot. I bought size MD and LG, MD fitting better since I have small ankles. If you have a fuller foot/leg and are in-between sizes I would go for the larger one. They are not constricting around the ankle and lower calf (crew socks) and are the right length for my La Sportiva Nepal Evo's. After 6 miles up to Camp with a 35lb pack through dirt, snow and ice I had no hot spots, no rubbing and plenty of cushion. My feet stayed plenty warm (Temp ranged from 50f to 20f). The only reason I did not give it 5 stars was because they started to pill after the first day and will probably not last very long.

Honey Stinger Organic Energy Chews - 12 Pack

Honey Stinger Organic Energy Chews - 12 Pack

Rating for this product: 5 April 24, 2012

Ok so these are better tasting then any gummy candies out there. The Pro's are they are packed with energy, taste great and do not get hard like a rock when it gets cold out(like Clif Shot Bloks). The only problem I have (most would say I am nit picking) is that they are not as packable as the Clif Shot Bloks because the pouches are filled with air. So taking a couple of pouches for a weekend Alpine Climb takes up a lot of space.

CamelBak Hydration Pack Cleaning Kit

CamelBak Hydration Pack Cleaning Kit

Rating for this product: 5 April 19, 2012

So after 6+ years of using a Camelbak and thinking the black spots inside the tube was normal, my friend pointed out to me that 1. Its not normal and people call it mold. 2. Stop being cheap, you need it. Well I solved the mold issue by using "his" cleaning kit, but then I moved and you guessed it the mold returned. So I ordered it and no more mold. Moral of story don't be cheap and do not think running soapy water through the tube cleans it. It's worth every cent.

Update: 5/1/12 The brush it comes with is very abrasive and you can use a soft cup brush instead. I bent mine straight with pliers and used it as a toilet brush, so its not wasted.
