Pretty Cool, Not Great, But Definitely Adequate

Black Diamond Spot Headlamp

Black Diamond Spot Headlamp

Rating for this product: 4 July 16, 2012

I am nowhere near an expert on headlamps and I use mine for hiking/camping only (as opposed to climbing, night running, night biking, etc.), but I will say that this is a decently-powered headlamp and is more than enough for around the campsite. In my opinion, it goes through batteries more than I would like but that could be due to use, battery type, temperature, and/or my ignorance. My only legit gripe is that cycling through the modes can be annoying (holding the button half-way in took some getting used to). Other than that, not a bad headlamp at all.

DAKINE Goggle Case

Rating for this product: 4 June 6, 2012

Bombproof? No, but it works. The inside is soft, roomy enough to fit a pair of goggles comfortably, and provides an adequate amount of cushioning. As long as you don't sit on the case or leave wet goggles in it, it does the job.

Great Canister

The North Face Base Camp Travel Canister - 215cu in

The North Face Base Camp Travel Canister - 215cu in

Rating for this product: 5 June 6, 2012

I have two of these canisters - an older version and the newer version (the only difference really being that the newer kit comes with a hook so that it can be hung up; the older comes with a buckle/clip system for the same purpose). Both are very durable (reminds me of the TNF Camp Duffel), very practical, and your belongings will stay protected due to the cushioning from the padding. I use the older kit for gear I don't want to get broken (SteriPen, MSR pocket rocket, headlamp, SnowPeak lantern - extra mantles, matches, and a pocket knife fit perfectly into the mesh pocket) and I use the newer case as a toiletry kit because it hangs and has a mirror (which I don't really use). If you are worried about the size, your toiletries will easily fit in the canister even if you aren't the lightest of packers (provided you aren't using full-sized shampoo, toothpaste, etc.). Probably a bit pricey for it being a toiletry kit but it is bombproof and has the TNF reputation.

Rating for this product: 5 June 6, 2012

The slogan should be reason enough to buy the shirt but if that does not do it for you, perhaps the fact that it is sized perfectly, not too thick, and very comfortable will do the persuading. I air-dried mine so I cannot comment on how much it shrinks.

Sanuk Donny Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 June 3, 2012

Awesome shoes (well, Sanuk markets them as sandals). Comfortable, stylish, lightweight. Just awesome. They have the lightweight, airy comfort of sandals but offer the protection (from dirt and such) of shoes. I am normally a size 15 but I got a size 14 and they fit perfectly. I'm not sure if this is indicative off all their sizes but it worked for me. You can't go wrong with buying a pair of these.

The Small Is Sufficient, But Tight

SealLine e-Series Electronic Case

SealLine e-Series Electronic Case

Rating for this product: 4 June 3, 2012

I have the small version of the Seal Line case. It does the job, is very handy (fits in my pocket), and I can still use the touch screen on my iPhone 4S - all great attributes. I use my case primarily for protecting my phone during runs/hikes in the rain and it has adequately done the job - I cannot attest to how well it would work if it was dropped in the water.

My reasoning for the four-star rating ("pretty cool") is due to the fact that my iPhone BARELY fits into it (with the case on). It is tight to the point of annoyance and is an effort to insert/remove my phone. It just seems counter-intuitive to me to produce a case that barely fits one of the most popular electronic devices on the market (to include iPod touches). Perhaps that is narrow-minded of me but I think it would have made more sense to make it a tad larger. If you have a smaller phone (or similarly-sized phone with a similar case or no case), it seems like it would do the job wonderfully. One could argue that I should have purchased the medium but then it would not have fit in my pocket.

Oakley Radar Path Photochromic Sunglasses

Rating for this product: 5 June 2, 2012

These sunglasses are light, they seem durable, and they fit perfectly (average face width). I don't have this particular color/version (I own the Polished White/OO Red Iridium polarized version) but I am extremely satisfied with my selection and would not change it if I could. Having polarized lenses is probably worth the extra cash for they are not too dark but they work well enough to make a big difference on very sunny days. Whether they are on my face (I usually wear them running) or on my head, they do not move and I have to believe they can be worn while doing just about anything. All this and they carry Oakley's reputation/warranty.

prAna Sutra Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 June 2, 2012

These are probably the most comfortable pants I own. In fact, I own three pairs. The color selection could be better but I guess they are going with Earth-tones. These pants are breathable, stretchy, and fit perfectly (6'4", 220 lbs; size large). I don't wear them for rock climbing so I cannot vouch for the durability but with everything else considered, they are worth the money.

Osprey Packs Grab Bag

Osprey Packs Grab Bag

Rating for this product: 5 June 1, 2012

Works well with the Argon pack and is very convenient if there are items you want to keep close and easily accessible (cell phone, small camera, compass, etc.). The adjustable strap allows it to be tightened so it does not swing or move when hiking. Another reviewer included a video which should explicitly show how to attach the Grab Bag to your pack. While my pack is an Osprey, I cannot see how it would not work with any other packs.

The North Face Logo Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 June 1, 2012

Very soft and comfortable sweat pants that are not too thick, but are not too thin. They seem to run on the long side and while others have said that they tend to shrink, I let mine air dry so I cannot confirm that. I am 6'4", 220 lbs and the XLs are definitely long enough (any excess in the waist can be mitigated with the drawstring). Perfect pants to lounge around the house in or wear to and from the gym.

I use the Ultra Capstrap on Burton Mission bindings and I love the set up. They definitely feel better than traditional capstraps and it seems as though they actually reduce foot cramps and pressure points. NRS Hydrosilk Rash Guard Top - Short-Sleeve - Men's

NRS Hydrosilk Rash Guard Top - Short-Sleeve - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 August 6, 2009

While a true rash guard is for surfing, I use mine for kayaking and whitewater rafting and I love it. It has UV protection, it dries quickly, it provides a layer of insulation, and it protects against minor scrapes and bumpgs. In warmer weather, you can wear it because it dries quickly yet provides UV protection. In cooler weather, you can wear it because it dries quickly yet provides an insulating layer. The sizes seem true to form and while it is tight and form-fitting, it is not restricting at all. It seems a lot more durable than a run-of-the-mill surfer brand rash guard.

Osprey Packs Digi-Stows Camera/Binocular Case

Osprey Packs Digi-Stows Camera/Binocular Case

Rating for this product: 4 June 21, 2009

Sufficient little case that holds smaller electronics and other little gadgets. I have the small and use it for a Blackberry, iPod, and headphones. A slim camera and smaller compacts will fit in the small but larger cameras definitely will not. A velcro strap secures the case to any belt/strap and it has a removable neck strap that allows you to wear it around your neck/shoulder and/or tie it down better. It is sufficiently padded which provides some protection and piece of mind. Overall, if you need to keep electonics closeby, the digistow is pretty handy. It would have a five star rating if it was a little cheaper.

Snow Peak GigaPower Lantern, Manual Ignition

Rating for this product: 5 June 15, 2009

Perfect backpacking lantern. Small, lightweight, bright, and easy to light - just screw it in an isobutane canister, turn it on, and light it up. It's a perfect compliment to my MSR Pocket Rocket. The white thing in the background of the picture is a case and it provides suffient protection against breaking the glass globe and I've even managed to stuff two extra mantles in there as well. If I had to guess, I would say that a 110 gram canister lasts probably 8 to 10 hours but I didn't really sit down and time it closely. Just a great overall lantern.

Hydro Photon SteriPEN Classic Handheld Water Purifier

Rating for this product: 5 May 25, 2009

I have the SteriPen classic with the pre-filter and I love it. It's convenient, it's easy, and it's extremely fool proof. All you have to do is literally stick it in water and turn it on. I use NiMH rechargeable batteries and I haven't had a problem yet but I am sure to keep extras with me just in case. The prefilter works for 4 micron particles but you could always use a coffee filter if you had to. However, I must say, I have yet to use my SteriPen in cold weather or at a high elevation so my review may not be as comprehensive. Regardless, all things considered, it is well worth it.

When I first got into snowboarding, I used the Freestyle bindigs. Not knowing any better, I thought they were a good binding, especially for the price. Just so you are aware, the picture above is incorrect. The Ultra Sil Stuff Sack does not have a roll top closure but rather a draw cord with a standard small cordlock. In actuality, it looks and feels very similar to the stuff sack that the Therm-a-Rest ProLite 4 sleeping pad comes with.

Yes, this pack would be overhead bin-friendly because all the horizontal straps would really compress it down. Perhaps to be a little extra certain, you could buy a few extra straps so you can compress the pack vertically as well and in effect, cocooning it.

I would definitely take the hip belt off but you could always, if need be, wear it by itself underneath your clothes and then take it off when you sit down.

Solio Classic Solar Charger w/Wall Adapters

March 26, 2009

the Solio does not charge batteries - it charges devices. Now if your Nikon D60 battery comes with a charger that has an adapter compatible with the Solio (i.e. Mini-USB), then it would probably charge your battery.

Petzl Tikka Plus Headlamp

Petzl Tikka Plus Headlamp

Rating for this product: 5 March 26, 2009

I've had my Tikka Plus for a few years now and it is still going strong. It's very lightweight but durable enough to continue to work after being dropped and banged around countless times. It's fairly bright - I won't say it's very bright like some other reviews - but it is definitely sufficient for the backcountry. I have used NiMH rechargeable batteries and they worked well enough to the point that I didn't see the difference between them and alkalines. Perhaps the only thing I wish it had was a battery meter. As it stands, the only way to find out your batteries are dying is the old fashioned way: the light gradually dims. While this is easy to notice most of the time, it's problematic in adverse (rainy, foggy, etc.) conditions and I've actually had my batteries die on my without really even noticing the light was getting dimmer.

One thing I'm impresseed with is that the elastic headband has not stretched out yet to the extent it is not useful anymore. I figured after endless usage, the head band would stretch out to the size of my waist but that hasn't been the case at all.

Solio Classic Solar Charger w/Wall Adapters

March 25, 2009

It costs more than batteries. You have to rely on the sun. It takes hours to recharge it. You have to make sure you have the adapter and if you don't, they are pricey to buy. However, all things considered - it's convenient if you have the adapters and makes life a lot easier in the backcountry if you need to charge a small device like a cell phone or a GPS unit.

Solio Classic Solar Charger w/Wall Adapters

Solio Classic Solar Charger w/Wall Adapters

Rating for this product: 5 March 25, 2009

I'm not really sure why there has been a number of negative reviews because I have yet to have a problem with my Solio. It's not going to charge a computer, but what would expect from something so small? It holds a charge very well but you just have to be aware that it's facing the sun when you are trying to recharge it. I cannot really attest to the usefulness of the adapters because I only need the USB and the mini-USB connections. I use my solio to charge my Garmin GPSMap 60CSx, my Blackberry, and the new Energizer duo battery charger which effectively allows my Solio to charge AA and AAA NiMH batteries. Being able to plug it in is also convenient if you want to charge it up quickly.

DAKINE Poacher Backpack - 2300cu in

DAKINE Poacher Backpack - 2300cu in

Rating for this product: 4 March 20, 2009

I'm not a big fan of the suspension for it doesn't fit my 6'4" frame that well but I must say, this pack has a ton of compartments, straps, and little nuances that make it well worth it. First and foremost, it holds my snowboard vertically with two straps and it is capable of holding skis in a diagonal position. The hydration sleeve is exactly just that - a sleeve - but what makes it cool is that it can be rolled up and tucked away when not in use. Also, to keep the hydration system from freezing, there is a way for the tube to run straight from the hydration sleeve to the padded strap to keep air away from it.

Perhaps the best part of the pack is all the pockets because there are so many of them. There is a side pocket for a shovel or water bottle, there is a pocket on the hip-belt for a cellphone, there are two pockets in the lid (one is fleece lined), there are smaller mesh pockets in the main compartment for storing tools and other smaller items, and there are loops on the side for an ice axe. The main compartment can be reached from either the top or from the back which is extremely convenient and it is large enough to stow everything you'll need for an outing. My only complaint is that it is a one size pack so it won't fit taller users as well. Other than that, it does everything a backcountry pack is supposed to do.

Osprey Packs Argon 85 Backpack - 5100-5500cu in

Osprey Packs Argon 85 Backpack - 5100-5500cu in

Rating for this product: 5 March 19, 2009

I have the XL in mustard and this pack is seriously the best I have ever used. It has nearly everything you are looking for in a pack - capacity, size, comfort, and style. The suspension is very comfortable and as long as you have your pack/gear strapped down, it's easy to forget you are carrying such a large load. I did not opt for getting the hip belt molded because, in my opinion, it became comfortable enough without it after two short excursions. The ventilation system truly does keep the sweat off your back and the hydration pocket holds my 100 ounce Camelbak Omega reservoir without any problems. The sleeping bag compartment is large enough to easily hold a synthetic North Face long bag and the external pocket can stow rain gear, smelly clothes, and so on without getting anything wet.

The pack isn't totally waterproof, but it is water resistant to the extent that your stuff won't get soaked if it's a light rain. I ended up buying the Osprey pack cover in the event I'm in a deluge but haven't dealt with that issue yet.

Perhaps the only nuisance is that it is fairly awkward trying to get a wide-mouth Nalgene bottle out of the side pocket because it doesn't have the standard water bottle pocket(s). Other than that, it is expensive, but it sure is worth it.

MSR WhisperLite Stove

MSR WhisperLite Stove

Rating for this product: 5 March 19, 2009

I've had my WhisperLite for about 4 years and it hasn't let me down yet. Although I prefer the PocketRocket in warmer weather because it's easier and lighter, the WhisperLite is still very durable and fairly easy to operate - just hook it to a fuel bottle, prime it, and then light it. Shaking does clean it, but it is still in your best interest to take it apart and really clean it. As others have stated, it is very quiet and boiling (depending on altitude) doesn't take that long. To make it more efficient, I usually make an improvised windscreen out of aluminum foil and that's all I have to do. Overall, you really can't go wrong with this stove because of its durability and overall ability to handle all climates.

This filter has yet to let me down. It's durable, it's easy to use, and the case it comes with is pretty handy for keeping it isolated from your other gear. Just put one end in the water and the other end in the water bottle and start pumping. I did not notice an after-taste and the Nalgene attachment comes in handy. It filters at like one liter per minute to the size of 0.3 microns and I have yet to get sick from using it. Overall, a solid buy.

CamelBak Omega HydroTanium Hydration Reservoir

Rating for this product: 5 March 16, 2009

I have the 100 oz / 3 L verson and I love it. It works in all of my packs and the versatility makes life a lot easier. It's durable, it hasn't leaked, it's easy to fill, and there isn't an after-taste. The tube is long enough so you can improvise your set up if need be and there is a clip on the top near the refill cap so you can hang it upright in your pack. Water only comes out when you bite down on the valve and if you are worried about germs, it is treated with an anti-microbial coating. I would recommend buying the 100 oz. version because you don't always have to completely fill it up is space is limited.

Atlas 10 Series Snowshoe

March 9, 2009

Snowshoes bindings are designed to fit most types of shoes including hiking boots, hiking shoes, winter boots, mountaineering boots and even trail shoes. Depending on the conditions and terrain it really comes down to personal preference.Snowboarding boots tend to be too big for most snowshoe bindings. Plus you probably want something light.I think it really comes down to your shoe size. If you have large feet (size 15) like I do, you have to make sure you wear boots that are are not too wide and cumbersome or they won't fit. Personally, I use a pair of Solomon winter boots and they work great. If you have smaller or more normal sized feet, you could probably get away with almost any kind of boot except snowboarding boots.

The North Face Borealis Backpack - 1830cu in

March 9, 2009

It you are looking for a pack that can do all that, I would suggest a smaller multi-day pack as opposed to a pack like the Borealis. The snowshow carrying feature is very limiting, especially if you want to put the snowshoes in the pack itself, but you could always put the snowshoes in a carrier bag and then strap that to the pack. Maybe check out something like the North Face Terra 40, the North Face Solaris 35, Gregory Z 35, or the Osprey Talon 44.

Bear Vault BV500 Bear Resistant Food Canister

Bear Vault BV500 Bear Resistant Food Canister

Rating for this product: 3 March 9, 2009

These things are one those "damned if you do, damned if you don't" deals. They are required in many places so you have to get one, but why they are $79 just baffles me. Do they work? Yes. But in reality, they are a glorified 5 gallon water jug with a lid - although not quite that large. I haven't had a problem with my BV500 but then again, I haven't been fortunate enough to experience a bear trying to open it, yet. I should mention, however, that I use mine in an area (Shenandoah NP) that doesn't require one but could and probably should. It fits perfectly into my Osprey Argon 85 but the outside grooves conveniently allow it to be strapped down as well if space is limited. Being clear is definitely a plus and as was stated earlier, it is strong enough to double as a stool. It does weight in at 2 lbs 9 oz. but I guess I'm glad it's heavier than not for smell insulation purposes. According to the Sierra Interagency Black Bear Group (www.sierrawildbear.gov), the BV500 is "conditionally approved" but nonetheless, approved.

Rating for this product: 5 February 26, 2009

These are a very solid pair of gloves that are reasonably sized and extend to cover your wrists. The removable fleece line helps on cold and windy days while the waterproofing does an adequate job of keeping your hands dry. The goggle wipe is convenient and there are little pockets inside each glove that I would imagine (but haven't personally tried) are used for some sort of small handwarmer. I haven't used them in extremely cold/wet conditions, but they are perfect for a normal wintry day on the slopes.

The North Face Gear Loft 1

Rating for this product: 5 February 16, 2009

If you want to keep glasses, cell phones, flashlights/headlamps, and/or other smaller belongings off your tent floor, then a gear loft would suit you just fine. As long as your TNF tents accepts this gear loft, it does exactly what is is designed to do. The clips fit my 4 year old TNF Talus 33 perfectly and it allows me to use my tent's pockets for stuff I don't quite use as much. I've had my gear loft for as long as I have had my tent and I have never had a problem with it. It hasn't ripped, it hasn't torn, and the fact that it has small pockets and is fully adjustable is very convenient. For me, the $15 is worth it for the ability to keep a small flashlight, a toothbrush, a contacts case, and a few other handy items 18 inches above my head.

MSR Pocket Rocket Stove

MSR Pocket Rocket Stove

Rating for this product: 5 January 8, 2009

For the simple backpacker, you can't beat the Pocket Rocket due to its size, ease, and weight. It takes any kind of canister fuel and lighting is as simple as screwing in the canister, holding a lit match over the burner, and turning on the gas. I've used it in temps ranging from the 20s to the 100s and it has never given me a problem. When it is super cold or very windy I make an improvised wind shield with aluminum foil to keep the heat in and that is about the extent of the maintenance. Make sure the stove is very level or a pot/pan may slide off and I wouldn't recommend it for a long backpacking trip unless canisters are readily available. Other than that, it is perfect for short excursions and trips where pack space/weight is an issue and/or you don't want to mess with a white gas stove.

It doesn't provide voice navigation like standard car GPS units, but it beeps and provides turn-by-turn instructions. It saves plenty of desirable stats (speed, distance, waypoints, routes, etc.) and the software allows you to easily download everything.
