First Sizing: I'm 5'9" 140 lbs. I love the way 30X30 levi 569s fit. A Small fit me perfectly in these pants.
Color: Yes, not black, brown, not anything really. Kinda ugly, but I also loved my bright purple patagonia fleece, so that isn't much of an issue for me.
I got these to wear hiking, backpacking, rock climbing, snowshoeing and any mixture of the previous. When I first got them, I was a little shocked at how thin they seemed, but figured if they're tough, who cares. This September, I took a trip, logging about 100 miles, 30,000+ vertical, many rock pitches and 7 days backpacking on 2 trips with about a 35ish lb pack, wearing these pants for all of it. They performed really well. Waterproof in the light rains, wind proof to about 20ish mph, cool enough to about 75 on a sunny multipitch, warm enough to the mid 30s while camping, stretchier than I am on rock moves and comfortable under a pack.
Why they didn't get 5 stars: 1) One of the last days on the trip, I was walking back to my tent in the Tetons when I felt a slight tug on my leg. Not thinking, I kept moving, only to hear the fabric tear from getting caught on a small pine about a foot tall. It only ripped about 1/2" by 1/2", but still dissapointing. I was hoping for more windproof. 2) At about 20+, you can feel the wind start to come through them. As a result, I don't think I'll be using them in any winter conditions. 3) The belt loops: I don't want to wear a belt under my climbing harness or hip straps. I'd prefer a draw strap with clamp inside the waist like in some MH products.
Overall: Great pants for the price. I will continue to use them for spring-fall hiking and climbing. Thanks BC!
