Together, the fleece and shell make a warm option when its super windy. With just a t-shirt underneath I am usually warm down to about 25-30 degrees. However if I layer it with a heavier wool baselayer, Im good down to 15degrees easily.
Apart is a little different story. The shell has a ton of features (pit zips, taped zippers, breathable waterproof membrane) and is great. I usually wear it around town when its rainy or windy. It is quite heavy if you are looking to backpack with it. (as far as just a shell layer to carry when its warm. If its cold weight is less a consideration) The fleece is warm in 50degree weather when its not super windy. I bought this fleece for the wind wall protection, and am a little disappointed. It blocks maybe 40% of the wind, which is great for a fleece but not as great as TNF says it is. It is also a little heavy to backpack with, if you are carrying it as an extra mid layer.
