Dynafit TLT 5 Performance TF Alpine Touring Boot

December 9, 2010

Owen, have you weighed a pair? That'd be a pretty shocking weight for a pair of ski boots, lighter than the lightest snowboard boots. This review confirms backcountry's misprint - http://coloradomountainschoolgearreview.blogspot.com/2010/02/dynafit-tlt-5-performance-carbon-boot.html

Rating for this product: 5 April 29, 2010

I never understood the fuss about $$$ platforms until I rode these. I've ridden lots of pedals (MG-1's, Canfield Crampons, Gravity Lights, Kona Wah Wah, etc) and these are the gripiest platform I've ever ridden, plus they're super thin, super light, and super bling. If you have the means, I highly recommend picking them up ;)

Runs big, I don't think they're actually Gore-Tex

Norrøna Narvik Insulated Short Glove

Norrøna Narvik Insulated Short Glove

Rating for this product: 2 January 17, 2010

I think the description on these are wrong - every pair of GTX gloves I've ever had (lots) has had a the small GTX tag somewhere, and GTX hang tags. These don't have them, and they don't really feel like they have a membrane in them.

They also run really big - got the XS for my GF, and they fit me perfectly (I wear a medium in most gloves).

So far I'm not really stoked on Norrona - their stuff definitely looks rad, but at those prices I would expect it to be made in Norway, not in China. At least Arc'Teryx is still making their expensive stuff in Vancouver. I'd rather have stuff from them and Westcomb than Norrona.

All you get is what's pictured, no ladders or risers...

Burton Ultra Capstrap

Burton Ultra Capstrap

Rating for this product: 2 May 1, 2009

I was looking for an upgrade strap for my Spark R&D splitboard bindings - they use crap Bent Metal straps and after a season are showing a lot of wear. I was hoping to lose a little weight off the bindings in the process too.

The description of these straps is lame - they lack any hardware (besides the screws mounting the buckle to the strap) and don't include any ladder straps or risers. Fine if you're just upgrading existing burton straps, but not so good if you're replacing old, worn out stuff. I'm gonna have to rob stuff off some of my other bindings or order new ladders and risers. The retail price of $40 is a joke for what you're getting here - they should come with everything.

Glad I got them half price, otherwise they'd be going back.

Rating for this product: 3 April 20, 2009

I really wanted to like these - they seemed like a perfect weight and the grippy rubber was a bonus. The hard toe box killed me when descending though, so I returned them. Maybe just a fit issue, I don't know....

Red Theory Helmet - 08/09

Red Theory Helmet - 08/09

Rating for this product: 5 April 20, 2009

This is the lightest helmet I could find that fits me well - low profile, not everywhere on the mountain (like the G10 MX this year). No vents to fill with snow (they're internal under the brim).

Tip - don't buy audio earpieces. Take a pair of earbuds and shove them through the holes inside the earpieces - works perfect.

Salomon Malamute Snowboard Boot - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 April 20, 2009

Maly's fit me perfect, I've got a pretty narrow foot. Super stiff for riding fast and going large. Mine have 2 seasons of 50+ days (resort and splitboarding) on them and they're still going.

Replace the insoles - all snowboard boots come with crap footbeds. I've been using the Sole Ed Viesturs with good results.

I use these more than any other pads I have - dh, fr, trail, etc - super comfy unless it's scorching out. I wear them snowboarding in the winter ever since I clipped a buried rock with my knee...

Sugoi Finotherm Beanie

Sugoi Finotherm Beanie

Rating for this product: 4 February 2, 2009

My head gets too hot in a normal wool beanie on the uptrack, this one is nice and thin and just warm enough. Fits nice under my helmet for the ride down too. Might be too big if you've got a tiny head.

Perfect BC Pants

Westcomb Mirage Pant - Men's

Westcomb Mirage Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 May 7, 2008

I wear these for split-touring - they're super light, super breathable, and super waterproof. With the mirage jacket, they're a perfect bc setup for me. Long outside thigh vents help cool you off fast. I like that they have no pockets - most pants have way too many.

Unbelievably bad strap design

Patagonia Critical Mass Bag

Patagonia Critical Mass Bag

Rating for this product: 1 January 31, 2007

This bag would be perfect, if they hadn't completely blown the strap design. I don't know what Patagonia was thinking, but the strap can't be made short enough for the bag to sit correctly while biking (unless you're really, really tall). Everything else about the bag is great, but the strap issue made it unusable for me - I sent it back and bought a chrome metropolis instead.
