Wild Country Helium Friends

January 9, 2012

Thanks for the info these really are pretty sweet cams. I find them more and more attractive compared to the BD Camalots although the new Aliens (made by Fixe) look pretty sweet also.

Just curious as to where these cams are manufactured. I would like to build my rack up some more and I'm looking into these. I really don't like the idea of buying cams made in china although it's not a absolute deal breaker.

Mammut Gipfelgrat Glove

December 14, 2011

I think that may be a typo on backcountry.com's part because Dry-Q is pretty much exclusive to Mountain Hardware and the Gipfelgrat uses only Neoshell.

Grivel G12 Crampon

Grivel G12 Crampon

Rating for this product: 5 November 20, 2011

Pretty awesome crampons. These are very durable and fit my Koflach degrees perfectly. They go on very fast even when your hands are cold and the design of the straps (I have the Newmatic version) minimizes fiddling.

Therm-a-Rest Prolite Plus Stuff Sack

Therm-a-Rest Prolite Plus Stuff Sack

Rating for this product: 1 November 20, 2011

I bought this and soon found that it was extremely difficult to get the pad into especially at -15. Now I use the trusted elastic band to contain my sleeping pad. Save yourself the time and money. Also the stitching that attaches the flap to the area underneath the drawstring ripped and I had to sew that. Now I use this for other purposes. Why is this 15 bucks? I have no idea.

Delaminated in less than a week with very minor exposure to water. Not what I expected from a 40$ pair of flip flops.

Not as good as expected.

prAna Mojo Short - Men's

prAna Mojo Short - Men's

Rating for this product: 2 November 20, 2011

I have two pairs of the mojos and I really don't like them. I know I'm going against the majority of the reviews but I find them uncomfortable and not durable. Within a week of buying them my first pair was having pulled threads. Within a couple of weeks of that the same pair had the elastic tear on the waistband. Nothing has happened to my other pair so maybe I just had a bad batch or something. I am not by any means abusive to my gear although I do climb 2-3 times a week and go backpacking every other week. I also don't like the fit (I find them two short) although maybe that's just me. The most annoying thing for me is that these have no stretch which I find very uncomfortable. I also find that the waistband tend to move up and cause discomfort. I find the fabric to be a little uncomfortable but once again that's probably just me. I just think that for a pair of shorts with a 40$ price tag they should be a little better.

Black Diamond Mercury Mitten - Men's

Black Diamond Mercury Mitten - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 November 20, 2011

I always carry these for the days when it's 15 below zero and the wind is pumping at 85 mph. These or something similar to these is a frostbite preventive that should always be carried. These are not dexterous and they weight more like 12oz a pair but they are WARM. And BTW these feel like a cloud when you put your hand in them.

NEMO Equipment Inc. Losi 2P Tent: 2-Person 3-Season

NEMO Equipment Inc. Losi 2P Tent: 2-Person 3-Season

Rating for this product: 5 November 20, 2011

For a borderline 4 season tent this is great. I wouldn't use it above treeline in winter but for everything else it is super bomber. I have camped in mid march on Mount Jefferson just below treeline and this tent and it has been extremely solid. This tent is exceptionally stable in high winds for a 3 season tent. Don't get me wrong it still makes a great summer backpacking tent but If that was all I was going to use it for I would go lighter. Also Nemo is a great company that makes very high quality tents.

Stoic eVent Stash Shell - Men's

Stoic eVent Stash Shell - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 November 20, 2011

Definitely the best feature of this jacket is the breathability. The durability is very good for a jacket of this although don't expect a bomber jacket (come on it weighs 13oz). What brings this down from five stars is that fit, for me at least, could be a little better and I find the hood to be a little tight with a helmet. Also the sleeves are starting to wet out but it's probably my fault for not restoring the DWR. I don't think I would have payed full price for this jacket simply because I think that there is better options out there. Take a look at some of the new Neoshell, DryQ and Active Shell jackets. Great review here http://coldthistle.blogspot.com/2011/10/shells-obvious-questions.html

One of the best down parkas.

Western Mountaineering Meltdown Down Jacket - Men's

Western Mountaineering Meltdown Down Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 November 20, 2011

Wow, this is an incredible piece of gear. By far the best down parka I have ever used. The quality is as near perfect as is possible. The down has an incredible amount of loft for its weight. The fabric is highly water and wind resistant. The fabric is very light and is not extremely durable but it is not overly fragile either. My parka (size small) runs in at under 17oz. This parka make for a perfect belay jacket and gives comfort of mind when you through it in your pack for a day out in the mountains. Standing around at camp this thing is a blessing. The hood is very nice and has lots of loft. I wouldn't store it with the hood stowed away, I think you could ruin the loft of the jacket. Also this jacket is made in Canada which is a nice change from overseas manufacture.

Black Diamond O2 Telemark Binding

Black Diamond O2 Telemark Binding

Rating for this product: 3 November 20, 2011

The O2 is a decent binding for the resort but there are better options such as the twenty two designs hammerhead. The need to constantly retighten the cartridges constantly is a little annoying. Also these binding are horrible for touring but that is not what theses bindings are ment for. I recently sold mine because of the lack of touring capability. On the good side these binding have nice action and are very smooth.

Try them on and see what fits, the Nepal and the Mont Blanc are made on different last so they will fit different feet. Other than that they are extremely similar boots. Fit is the most important factor in selecting mountaineering boots.

Grivel G12 Crampon

November 19, 2011

I have the G12 New-matic and the don't really fit on my old Scarpa T2s. I can't speak for the Crampomatic. I think that Grivel makes a wide version that might work with tele boots. By the way the G12 is still an amazing crampon and I wear it whenever I'm not in tele boots.
