Pearl Izumi Attack Low Socks

Pearl Izumi Attack Low Socks

Rating for this product: 4 March 19, 2012

I followed the advice of another reviewer and got the large instead of the XL. I wear a US Mens 12 and the large fits perfect despite the sizing instructions on the package. The socks are perfectly fine otherwise. Very thin designed for warmer rides.

Good for cold, not freezing weather

Pearl Izumi Cyclone Glove

Pearl Izumi Cyclone Glove

Rating for this product: 4 March 15, 2012

I wore these through the bitter cold, early morning winter rides of Southern California. OK It never gets that cold here but I definitely need a warm glove on cold mornings. These worked great for me down to 40 degrees or so. The wind cuts in somewhat but it has never been a problem after I warm up a little. Any warmer and it would get uncomfortable. My hands are usually damp from sweat when I pull them off. I wouldn't want to go any warmer where I live. Probably not enough in northern climates. As far as fit, these are a little tight across the hand but normal in the length. The gloves are well made and I would buy them again. They have held up much better than the generic brand I bought before.

Forget the gels!

Honey Stinger Stinger Waffle - 16 Pack

Honey Stinger Stinger Waffle - 16 Pack

Rating for this product: 5 March 10, 2012

I can't stand goos and gels. I know they have their pros but I can't get them down. I love these and buy them by the case. Within minutes of eating one (and the required water to get them smoothly down), I feel 100% better and ready to tear it up. The only problem is I that have to hide them from the kids because they love to eat them as snacks.

It holds water!

Castelli Water Bottle

Castelli Water Bottle

Rating for this product: 4 March 9, 2012

This is a very basic water bottle and it works fine for that. The bottle is soft and easy to squeeze when I want a gush of water rather than a trickle. A litle on the small side so don't plan on this alone if you're going out for a long ride. In any case, I'm a sucker for the Castelli logo so I couldn't resist.

Castelli Podium Collection - Gavia Cycling Cap

Castelli Podium Collection - Gavia Cycling Cap

Rating for this product: 2 March 9, 2012

I picked this up on sale so I thought it would be worth a few bucks. This is very poorly made. Not at all consistent with my experience with Castelli products. The stitching is poor, it's very small, and looks like it might fall apart very quickly with normal use. The best part is that it still comes with a Castelli sticker on the label.

Fits my big melon

Castelli Berretto Striscia Hat

Castelli Berretto Striscia Hat

Rating for this product: 4 March 8, 2012

I have a good size melon and this fits fine. Doesn't go too far over my ears but it covers enough. It keeps my head and ears warm and looks good too.

Water resistant, not proof

Showers Pass Touring Jacket - Men's

Showers Pass Touring Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 March 8, 2012

I bought this jacket for cold, damp mornings when I need something to cut down on the wind chill and the moisture cutting through me. It works great for that. It looks good, too. As others have mentioned, it does not breathe. I started getting damp 3 or 4 miles in. I unzipped a little and dried out quick enough. It was worth it to keep the wind off me. I have never said this before in my life but I think the XXL was a little big for me. The sleeves are 3 inches too long and I can wear two or three layers under it. It all works out OK as you can tighten the sleeves around your wrist so the length isn't that much of an issue. It leaves plenty of room to move around in. I got the yellow for riding in the dark. I'm pretty hard to miss.

UPDATE: I wore this in the pouring rain recently and was thoroughly soaked. I had my iPhone in the chest pocket and it did not make it. I would call this jacket water resistant, not water proof.

Elastic, or no elastic. That is the question.

Giro Prolight Cycling Helmet

Giro Prolight Cycling Helmet

Rating for this product: 4 February 28, 2012

Some people hate the elastic. Some people love it. I am in the latter group. I find the elastic to be way more comfortable than anything else. It may not last as long but I'd rather be comfortable. And yes, I do think the helmet's shape could be a little sleeker but that could be said for many of Giro's helmets. I have a larger head so the shape works well for me. I picked this up for $100 and upgraded from a cheap Bell, so maybe I am easy to please, but I love this helmet so far.

I got this for free with another purchase, so no complaints. It is definitely a bag that you can hold stuff in--nothing too heavy though. Enjoy!

Great! Warm enough for me.

Castelli Bormio Arm Warmer

Castelli Bormio Arm Warmer

Rating for this product: 4 February 28, 2012

I got these on sale for $10 so I have absolutely no complaints! I had never used arm warmers before so I got the cheapest pair I could find as a test. These work really well. I got them in XL. I'm 5'11 and these are a little long for me. I have to roll the top over onto intself but that works out OK as it keeps the elastic from biting into my arm. I assume that they make warmer models as the cold does cut through them below 40 degrees. I live in SoCal so that doesn't come up too often. If you ride in colder areas I would look for something warmer.

Gambled and won!

Louis Garneau Twin Clydesdale Tight - Men's

Louis Garneau Twin Clydesdale Tight - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 September 22, 2011

I wasn't sure how well these would work for me. First, they fit! They run true to size and don't cheat you out of comfort. That is the best part when you're a big guy like me. I wear them right over my bike shorts without a problem. The wind cuts through them to a degree but my legs don't typically get as cold as my torso. I'm in Southern California so real cold isn't a problem. They breathe reasonably well without letting too much cold in. Go ahead and buy them. You're safe.

Reduces chill factor

Louis Garneau SF-2 Plastron Long Sleeve Top

Louis Garneau SF-2 Plastron Long Sleeve Top

Rating for this product: 3 September 22, 2011

This is the first base layer article of clothing I have purchased so I don't have anything to compare it to. First, the sizing is slim. I'm a big guy and have to squeeze in and out of it. I knew it would be tight so I can't complain. The front has a form of plastic imbedded in it so it cuts the wind reasonable well. The cold still gets around to the back of my arms but it protects my torso which is what I really care about. The back is mesh so it breathes sufficiently. It's basically a backless windbreaker that you can wear under your jersey. Overall, it works but I don't recommend it for colder than 45 degrees or so.

Good look for a big guy

Louis Garneau Perfecto Clydesdale Jersey - Short-Sleeve - Men's

Louis Garneau Perfecto Clydesdale Jersey - Short-Sleeve - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 August 5, 2011

A lot of gear that's made for a big guy looks cheap--probably because most of it is. It seems that when they design a large size, they focus on getting a volume discount on fabric vs. the look of the gear. This is one of the best looking jerseys that I've found in my size. It's true to size so order accordingly.

True to size

Louis Garneau Fit Sensor Clydesdale Short - Men's

Louis Garneau Fit Sensor Clydesdale Short - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 August 5, 2011

With the exception of the LG Clydesdale line, nothing I order online ever fits. It's too big or too smal. I'm a big guy at 5'11'' and close to 3 bills. I took my measurements and ordered accordingly. To my great surprise, they fit. I have worn them twice and have no complaints. I'm sure the people who see me wearing them might have a complaint or two but that's irrelevant. On top of the fit, they look good and perform well.
