Marmot Limelight 3-Person Tent w/ Footprint and Gear Loft

July 28, 2011

This tent was set up on wet ground and it rained hard. I was completely dry all night (I used the footprint). Additionally, the vestuble had plenty of room for my gregory 75 litre pack, so it stayed dry also.

Great Coffee Press

GSI Outdoors Java Press

GSI Outdoors Java Press

Rating for this product: 5 June 30, 2012

I need coffee in the backcountry. Until I found this press, I was packing a "regular" french press with a glass jar that was relatively heavy. I was concerned that the plastic wouldn't hold up. I've now used this coffee press >10 times and its still holding up well. I purchased the stoic titanium long spoon (link below) with it and it works out great. The 50oz press it just long enough for the spoon to fit inside when you're packing.

Good sunshade, May not hold up to weather

Kelty Screenhouse

Kelty Screenhouse

Rating for this product: 4 June 4, 2012

I took this on a camping trip recently where we experienced relative high winds (20-30 mph). I used all the down guides, which worked pretty well. It didn't blow over. I knocked off one star for 2 reasons. #1, the roof is "droopy" If it rains, the water will pool up. I have a multi-purpose aluminum extension pole that I will use (with a towel balled up on the top to prevent tearing) which should solve the issue. #2 The stakes that come with this are crap. The wind tore them right out of the ground, which is more soil related, but when I collected them, they were twisted and bent. (spend an extra $20 and get these http://www.backcountry.com/kelty-j-stake-6-pack)

Mix with Mac & Cheese

Mountain House Buffalo Style Chicken Wrap

Mountain House Buffalo Style Chicken Wrap

Rating for this product: 5 June 4, 2012

I mix this with the mac & cheese meal http://www.backcountry.com/mountain-house-macaroni-and-cheese-2-serving-entree

This meal is quick, easy, and delicious. The mac is a little "plain" on its own, but the buffalo chicken livens it up. Mixing with the mac & cheese makes the chicken a meal without having to tote the tortillas.

This meal was very good. Some backpacking food either tastes too bland, or is very salty. This is neither. Good flavor and a mix of vegetables make this a "repeat meal" for me.

I was very surprised at how tasty this is. It's pretty messy to eat, but tasted awesome. There are separate packs (included) of oreo crumbs and nuts to add to the top of what basically looks like chocolate pudding.

AlpineAire Ranch Omelet with Beef

AlpineAire Ranch Omelet with Beef

Rating for this product: 1 June 4, 2012

I had to go without breakfast on the latest backpacking trip because I didn't pay attention to the "cooking required" notice on the pouch. You add cold water this pouch and then "cook like real eggs". If you're backpacking, you probably aren't equipped to cook "real eggs" and if you're car camping, you may as well cook real eggs. Not sure what this product would be for.

Costa Del Mar Caballito Polarized Sunglasses - Costa 580 Glass Lens

Rating for this product: 5 May 8, 2012

The caballito sunglasses are awesome. The 580 glass lenses are superb. Also, Costa Del Mar has some great style.

Medium sized sunglasses usually work perfect for me and these fit perfect which makes me think they may not fit great if you typically wear large face sun glasses.

Scientific Anglers Compact 216 Small Waterproof Fly Box

This box is the perfect size for a shirt pocket if you're the type that doesn't want to carry all your gear out on the river. Its easy to open and close and slits for inserting flies is much more convenient than sticking the hooks into a foam wall as you get with other boxes.

NEMO Equipment Inc. Fillo Pillow

Rating for this product: 5 May 6, 2012

I've always just used my coat or a dry bag as a pillow when camping. I finally decided to buy a camp pillow. I've never slept so well in the backcountry. It's not super light, so if you're an UL camper, you may decide this isn't worth it.

I like these Patagonia Rio Gallegos Waders quite a bit. I've been out in them several times and they feel pretty durable. My only complaint is that the suspenders don't have clips, so you have to pull the straps aside to get in and out of the waders.

Pretty good

Patagonia Down Sweater Jacket - Men's

Patagonia Down Sweater Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 December 1, 2011

This sweater is warm and very light. The "regular" fit is fairly boxy, so if you like the more fitted look this won't work for you. For that same reason, it doesn't work too well as a layer under a shell if your shell is fitted. The fabric seems more durable than what I've seen in other down sweaters. Seems less likely to tear if snagged.

Patagonia Powder Bowl Pant - Men's

Patagonia Powder Bowl Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 December 1, 2011

Been out twice in these pants now and really like them. I took a couple of nice falls (and not in powder) and the material is blemish-free. The material moves well and doesn't make too much of the typical "swoosh" sound when I move. Pockets are in places that make sense. The only thing I'd like to see different is mesh in the vents to keep the snow out.

My new favorite jacket

Peak Performance Heli Loft Jacket - Men's

Peak Performance Heli Loft Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 November 28, 2011

I've worn this our skiing twice now and love it. I'm 5'9" 175 and the medium is perfect. Its very warm and light. The pit zip vents work great. I wiped out a couple times with the zips opened and no snow in the jacket. The outside material seems very high quality and didn't show any signs of wear, even after some wipe outs in trees. The material on the inside is amazingly soft and feels good on skin. I have a size M smith variant helmet and the hood fits perfectly over and doesn't sacrifice field of vision. I was a little apprehensive because of the price, but this thing is awesome and worth it.

Durable rope

Sterling Canyon Tech Rope - 9.5mm

Sterling Canyon Tech Rope - 9.5mm

Rating for this product: 5 November 13, 2011

This rope has now been through several canyons with larger groups using it. While it is definitely in need of a cleaning, it remains free of abrasions or any other issues. It does have a very slight stretch to it that is noticeable on raps over 100ft, but much less than ropes used by my buddies.

Marmot Pro Tour Softshell Jacket - Men's

Marmot Pro Tour Softshell Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 October 21, 2011

I just got this jacket and am loving it. It moves well and is very comfortable. When it first arrived I thought it was too light to be warm. I was wrong. Its pretty warm, even with just a tshirt underneath. It fits slim, so if you plan to layer over bulkier items, you may want to size up. I have a smith helmet and the hood doesn't quite cover the whole thing and it won't zip all the way up with the hood over the helmet. Not really a problem for me, but worth noting.

Five Ten Canyoneer 2 Shoe - Men's

October 17, 2011

I would say no. These are heavier than what you'd want in a running shoe, swimming with them is only to get from A to B (in a canyon) and there are better climbing/approach shoes that you could run in. These are primarily for canyoneering where you need traction and stability and can make the other sacrifices. Check out this shoe, which has the same (or very similar) traction, but is much lighter and easier on the feet for running. http://www.backcountry.com/five-ten-guide-tennie-approach-shoe-mens
