We had some NASCAR action in a pace line several weeks ago. Everyone tried to steer out of it. I hit the pavement and got serious road rash in all the usual places. The most amazing thing: No tear, no big burn hole. Maybe I was just lucky, or maybe the fabric panel on the outside of the hip is designed to be a skid pad. Whatever, the shorts came out looking a lot better than the crash dummy.
