Waterproofing chemicals?

The Norrona website gives these a 3 out of 6 waterproof rating.
Does anyone know how this is achieved? I've recently found out about the dangers of PTFE and PFOA, and would like my gear to be as Earth-friendly as possible from now on. Thanks.
