The North Face Aconcagua Down Jacket - Girls'

The North Face Aconcagua Down Jacket - Girls'

Rating for this product: 3 May 5, 2012

This jacket does not feel like a typical down jacket - the outer fabric is so thick it hardly feels like there's any down inside! It was way too stiff and shiny for my taste! My daughters did like the color options this jacket offered (esp. the light blue). We ended up buying the Carmel jacket instead, which also has the 550 down fill but was a ton warmer and lighter, perfect for our cold Chicago winters!

Great Jacket!!

The North Face Carmel Jacket - Girls'

The North Face Carmel Jacket - Girls'

Rating for this product: 5 May 5, 2012

This one actually has a 550 fill, NOT 600 as the description says (see a close-up pic of the sleeve!). BUT, it still is a great jacket for young girls! Sort of like a grown-up jacket but smaller! It's very warm, light, and durable! My 9.5 year old who is 53" and 70 lbs fits perfectly in a medium. It's not overly puffy so she can still move and run around during recess. I also tried the Acongua jacket (sp??) which also has the 550 down fill but a ton less down and too stiff for an easy movement so this Carmel jacket definitely a few notches better in quality!

Wish Measurements were Given!

The North Face Toddler Mittens

The North Face Toddler Mittens

Rating for this product: 4 November 3, 2011

I really wish TNF gives clear measurements for toddler products! I could not find anything on the Internet that showed how big or small these mittens were and these are not just one "toddler" size but separate 2T, 3T and 4T sizes! I took a chance by ordering size 3T for my 3 year old (3 years and 2 months) who I think has average sized hands/fingers (not scientific since I've never compared his hands with any other toddlers!). My son's hand is 4-1/2" from the center wrist straight to the tip of his middle finger. His thumb is 1-1/4" long and the widest part of the palm is 2-1/2" wide (fingers together, measured at the "foot" of the thumb where it sticks out a little). The mittens, on the other hand, are 5" from the wrist line to the tip, 2" long thumb, and about 3" to 3-1/4" width. The mittens have elasticized wrists (in addition to the velcroed 'flap' on the back side of the hand that can be used to adjust the widths) and about 3" long extra material that extends towards the arms, finished with some more elasticized cuffs. If you look at the mittens, the bottom half is as big as the top (the hand) part of it so these are super long mittens! The inside of the mittens are lined with fleece. I got the black ones which seem to have a different type of the adjustable flaps than the pink or blue (see the pictures closely).

Now, obviously the mittens are quite bigger than my son's hands but with the elastics and adjustability plus the extra length, the fit is not bad at all. His thumbs are not lost in them and he can easily grab things while wearing the mittens. He cannot shake the mittens off when he is wearing them either. There's enough room so I'm pretty sure we can get 2 years (winters) of use out of them which is a great plus! I also really love how long the mittens are - it'll ensure snow won't creep in when he's busy playing (they'll be tucked inside the sleeves of his jacket). After all, we've had too many mittens that don't stay on and/or uncomfortable! We have not had snow yet here so I cannot tell you how "waterproof" these are (they do say these are waterproof.) but I'm hoping these will be the best toddler snow mittens ever for us!

The North Face Denali Fleece Jacket - Toddler Boys'

The North Face Denali Fleece Jacket - Toddler Boys'

Rating for this product: 5 October 21, 2011

This is a great jacket for a busy toddler boy because the jacket does not get dirty easily - somethig about it that you can shake off lots of dirt from the jacket so my son can keep wearing it wihout having to wash the jacket often (and my son is a dirt lover); and when it's time to wash, the color does not fade and the texture does not change much (sure it becomes less new looking after being washed many times but compared to other cheaper fleece it keeps the look amazingly well wash after wash); absolutely no shrinkage (warm water gentle cycle and hang to dry). The jacket is very useful because it's pretty weather resistant - you can wear it in the rain (although it is NOT a rain coat so you would't just put it on and stand outside in a downpour but can handle drizzles when you're walking to your car in the parking lot without an umbrella, etc.) or snow (again it's not a snowsuit so it's not for hours of play in the snow). It's light weight so it does not weigh my son down. The zippers are well made and does not get stuck easily and even my 3 year old can zip up himself so it's great for school. Needless to stay it's pretty warm (warmest it can be as a fleece jacket) and so those of us who live in the Midwest basically can use this jacket 9 months out of a year!

The only other thing I need to mention is that I find TNF toddler sizes to be on a smaller side so my 36 months old who is petite (25th percentile) who can still wear 2T jackets is fitting nicely into TNF 3T jackets. I recently bought a TNF 4T down jacket for him and surprisingly he is not swimming in it so make sure to size up.

Try the jacket and you won't regret getting it!

Great deal!

The North Face Oh Snap Vest - Women's

The North Face Oh Snap Vest - Women's

Rating for this product: 4 August 2, 2011

I just received one of the last black vests on sale - and I can't wait to start wearing it when the weather cools down! The black is shiny black and I usually prefer the non-shiny kind but this is a vest so it's fine. I'm usually small to medium for tops and since there was no small left I got a medium. I don't think it runs small like another reivew said but it certainly not big so I think it's a true medium. I might have been able to fit into a small (for more fitted look) but not with a thick layer (like a medium weight fleece) underneath as I often do in colder temperatures. Plus the length is on a short side so I'm short (5'1) but it just comes down to my waist (in other words it doesn't cover my hip like many reg length jackets do). I like to hood because it does add warmth but I wish it was detachable. The pockets with zippers are nice. overall I think you'll be very happy with this TNF vest if it fits right and you can't find it cheaper anywhereelse.

This is what I was looking for!!

Kamik Stomp Boot - Little Boys'

Kamik Stomp Boot - Little Boys'

Rating for this product: 5 May 9, 2011

I've been looking for boots like this forever and finally found it! I got the black pair in size 8 for my 2.5 year old who is wearing size 7 wide shoes right now. The fit is great - not too big but have enough toe room to wiggle. Too many rain boots are made so big that I'm never sure what size to order but these are pretty true to size! The boots are not like regular rain boots you see in stores but more like real wellies - longer (mine are 8.0" tall), slimmer (better fit and it won't come off easily but pants can still get tucked in), and no cumbersome handles! I love the solid black color (with a little kamik log in silver) because it looks pretty stylish! And best of all, these were on sale! I just order one of the last size 9s in black! Thanks Backcountry!!
