Outdoor Research Neoplume Insulated Jacket - Men's

August 29, 2012

Larger than a grapefruit, smaller than a volleyball.

This is made to be comparable to a down sweater--maybe slightly less so--so definitely equate this to a heavier fleece or maybe a wool jacket. Primaloft is one of the best weight-to-warmth ratios for a synthetic that you'll find and tends to work better than down in wet/humid climates...

Osprey Packs Insulated Delivery System

August 29, 2012

No this does not attach with a magnet--when you zip the bite valve away, the magnet on the bite valve is hidden.

You can see the strap and buckle in the photo--there is a buckle attachment that you can shimmy on any thinner strap on your pack: sternum strap, bottom of the shoulder strap, etc... You then buckle the mouth piece into that area to prevent the whole thing from bouncing around.

Hope that clarifies instead of confuses...

Osprey Packs Stratos 24 Backpack - 1343-1587cu in

August 29, 2012

The Talon 22 might be perfect for you. It is a great day hiking pack, and also great for bike commuting. It is frameless so it will launder easier and it is will not hit your helmet.

The Stratos 24 will also not hit your helmet but as the hipbelt is a little more robust than the Talon 22, it is meant to sit higher on your torso. However, the ventilated backpanel and the removable rain cover are super nice features that the Talon 22 doesn't have. It is launder-able, but since it has a frame, a front-loading washing machine might be the best option.

So your decision comes down to lightweight/better for biking/great for hiking or ventilated backpanel/better for hiking/good for biking...

Osprey Packs Kestrel 48 Backpack - 2807-2929cu in

August 16, 2012

I'd bank that you're a M/L torso, but I am worried that your waist is too small and you won't be able to properly tighten the hipbelt enough.

Here is the sizing info for the Kestrel Series.

Torso Length Hip Measurement Pack Size
> 19" / 48.5cm > 32" / 81cm M/L
< 19" / 48.5cm < 32" / 81cm S/M

If that is indeed the case, consider looking into the Atmos 50L--$30 more, but you'll get a pack with better torso sizing AND adjustable hipbelt. The $30 will be money well spent if the pack fits better...

Outdoor Research Helium Jacket - Women's

August 15, 2012

Depends on the level of waterproof you need while running. If you need 100% Seattle-proof lightweight rain jacket, this is okay--very breathable but not the most breathable out there. I'd actually look into the Helium II--the updated version that is ~30% more breathable.

I don't like underarm venting for running because the zippers tend to rub and chafe after a while. So the lighter-weight and more breathable the material, the more invaluable it is as a "running jacket" for rainy days.

If it is the occasional drizzle/mist type waterproof, I agree with Arthur about a water-resistant windshirt/windjacket (depending if you like 1/2 zip or full zip). Typically that means the fabric is waterproof, but the jacket isn't seam-sealed. Therefore, the jacket's breathability is exponentially increased while still providing a high level of water protection.

Outdoor Research Meteor Mittens

August 10, 2012

There is a distributor of OR product in Australia which may prohibit your wish to purchase these here and have them shipped to Aus.

Aside from that, the Latitude mitt has a full fingered softshell glove with an unlined waterproof GoreTex shell. The Meteor has a high-pile fleece Miller mitt liner--the fabric at the finger folds back to expose finger tips for dexterity--and a lined, lightly-insulated waterproof Ventia shell.

I would say that liner+shell for both Latitude and Meteor result in a temperature rating around 10 degrees Farenheit. However, liners by them selves: Latitude 15 deg F, Meteor 20 deg F.

Hope this helps.

Osprey Packs Talon 22 Backpack - 1220-1343cu in

July 25, 2012

Lots of questions here Janet...

The Talon 22 is a lightweight hiking pack but does not come with hydration. If packability is what you're looking for, pairing this with the 2L or 3L Osprey hydration reservoir (which it is compatible with) is a great option. If you got the Osprey reservoir, it comes with a sternum strap magnet that works with the bite valve to keep the hose from bouncing around.

There is no rain cover that comes with this pack. However, it does work well with a rain cover if you get the proper size cover for this pack. It will fit an extra 2 layers, small camera, first-aid kit, and food for a day. It would also fit a DSLR camera fine with a couple layers and food. A hydration reservoir will fit just fine with either of these loads.

Also, aim for a sized pack and go for the smaller sized pack. Being petite, a sized pack will fit you so much better and make the carry of that pack that much better as well.

Western Mountaineering Apache MF Sleeping Bag: 15 Degree Down

July 20, 2012

The Microfiber material is ultra water resistant. It will shed water from the outside.

In comparison, I'd say that Pertex is going to keep you drier from the outside. If you are sweaty (as most people are), Microfiber will keep you more dry from the inside--it breaths better than any type of Pertex layer.

It all boils down to if you're in a tent--if yes, then the Microfiber will be plenty dry enough. If not, then the Feathered Friends bag may be the way to go as it will better protect your down from the elements.

On top of that, this pack comes with a 3L reservoir for water. Granted, for a long day, you may need more than that and being able to fit extra water somewhere would be nice. Just wanted to make sure you know what you're getting with this pack.

Hello,

I would go with a Kode 30 if you have to go with a Small or Medium simply because of the rear-panel entry option available on that pack but not on the Kode 22. It is a great feature that you'll value even if you have to carry a slightly larger pack than you'd prefer...

Outdoor Research Foray Jacket - Men's

July 16, 2012

I have skied in this jacket a bunch, and it holds up well to the occasion tree branch encounter. However, it is a little on the thin side and the stretch isn't there--stretch for mountaineering purposes is a huge advantage. I'd either consider the Axiom still--slightly heavier weight than the Foray with stretch--or the Furio if you absolutely need to cut costs for some reason. The Furio has Pac-lite weight through the body of the shell but Pro-shell through the shoulders where you need extra-rugged protection the most.

Don't cut costs. The Axiom will function ever $$ worth you spend on it and will not disappoint you. It is the best lightweight mountaineering shell we make--read the article about it as Outside Magazine's Gear of the Year 2012.

The two poles both go in the head region--on over your face and the other around the opening/top of head so to create rigidity at the opening, which aids in both keeping the opening open for ventilation and preventing the top of the bivy from curling around your head--giving you more head room.

Osprey Packs Stratos 24 Backpack - 1343-1587cu in

June 14, 2012

Hey David,

The trade-offs between the two packs are slim. The Stratos has a removed ventilated backpanel to keep sweaty back syndrome to a minimum. Because of that, it also has a frame and therefore can carry a touch more weight than the Talon.

The Talon is the lightest thing you'll put on your back that is also durable enough for peak bagging. It also has external hydration sleeve so it is easier to slip a hydration reservoir in when your pack is full--especially so if you have the Osprey Reservoir that has rigidity.

The reported volumes are a bit deceiving--the Stratos 24 and the Talon 22 are pretty similar in size though are suppose to be 2L difference.

So really, your decision boils down to frame/ventilated backpanel or lightweight?

I'd definitely stick with the Argon series over the Aether series for that much weight. The Aether would carry the 50-60 no problem, but push it over 70lb and you'll appreciate the added comfort from the Argon's carry.

And since the Argon 110 is built on the same frame as the Argon 85, they'll both handle the same weight fairly comparably. The 110 will maybe organize and carry larger things efficiently, but if you see yourself needing more than 85L of interior volume, go 110L for sure.

June 6, 2012

I have carried the woman's version (Sirrus) and a larger women's Camelbak and while Camelbak has done wonderful things on how we carry water, they aren't a backpack company. I was blown away with how well the Osprey pack carried. For carrying the amount of gear you would for a longer day hike, the Stratos will distribute weight better. The biggest difference will be in the frame, the hipbelt, and the harness. The frame and backpanel allows great ventilation and support and the hipbelt/harness are designed to work with the frame to displace the weight comfortably down through your hips instead of resting it on your back/shoulders. Plus, the hipbelt feels like it is hugging you, so the pack sits very stably--it doesn't bounce around as you're walking...

I think you'll be happier with this bag purely on how it carries... Hope this helps.

Osprey sizes are based on Torso Length and not height. To size that, go here: http://www.ospreypacks.com/en/web/sizing_and_fitting

2. When you have a nalgene in the side pocket, you can feed the compression straps underneath/inside the side pocket. That will allow you to use a nalgene AND compress the bag at the same time.
3. This pack is superb on a bike or on a hike. Because of how close it fits and how it moves with you due to the lack of a frame, it really rides well by keeping the center of gravity close to your body--I know a lot of people love this pack for longer mountain bike rides. And this pack is also a great go-to for day hikes.

Osprey Packs Talon 22 Backpack - 1220-1343cu in

April 25, 2012

I'd say there's plenty of space for a day hike--3L reservoir, jacket, extra layer, food, camera, and safety stuff (sunscreen, first aid, compass, etc...). There is an external shove-it pocket you can put the jacket and a small organization pocket up top for your safety stuff. Also, there are two side stretch pockets for the camera or what not.

Outdoor Research Axcess Jacket - Women's

April 25, 2012

That info is wrong. While there is a helmet liner balaclava that is zip-in (comes with the jacket), there is not liner jacket that zips into this jacket.

Great Athletic Skirt

Outdoor Research Expressa Skort - Women's

Outdoor Research Expressa Skort - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 April 20, 2012

Flirty and functional with a built-in brief... I love this skirt hiking as well as for playing ultimate frisbee (the brief is great!). It is super cute on but a word of warning, the length is a little on the short side... It hits around mid-thigh.

I love it and it is super flattering! I'm 5'4", 115lbs and size 4 is perfect...

Stinkless Polyester!!!

Outdoor Research Essence Zip T-Shirt - Long-Sleeve - Women's

Outdoor Research Essence Zip T-Shirt - Long-Sleeve - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 April 20, 2012

I have had two versions of this shirt and the fit is significantly better than in past years. The torso is longer as are the arms.

It has a great feel to it as well--soft like organic cotton--and has more warmth to it than a basic polyester tshirt.

The thing that I absolutely love about this shirt is how it does not hold stink. Don't get me wrong, I own 2 Patagonia Capaliene baselayers and I prefer the weight of it. But I can't wear them more than 3 hrs because they start to smell AWFUL--no matter how much I wash them the stink never really goes away.

I have not run into that issue with this shirt. It is lightweight so when I need a heavier baselayer, I still go to my Capaliene 3. Once OR starts making this in a heavier weight, I'll ditch my Cap 3 in a heartbeat for something a little less stinky!

comfy capris

Carve Designs Quest Capri Pant - Women's

Carve Designs Quest Capri Pant - Women's

Rating for this product: 4 April 20, 2012

These are comfy capris for any fitness style, but specifically yoga. The material is soft and stretchy and the fit looks great on. Also, the scallop at the knee hits at a good place.

My one issue is the high waist with a drawstring in the middle. It looks good on, and it comfortable, but the string isn't quite long enough so when you put it on, sometimes the string disappears inside the track. So make sure you tie it off so that it is still loose enough to slip on and that will prevent the disappearing drawstring issue!

Carve Designs Sanibel Top - Short-Sleeve - Women's

Carve Designs Sanibel Top - Short-Sleeve - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 April 20, 2012

The fit on this is spot on--the neckline is not too low, the sleeves end up looking like a cap-sleeve top, and it is flowy through the torso. It is a soft cotton and really comfy to wear.

I'm 5'4" and 115lbs and I wear a size small.

Carve Designs Lanikai Short - Women's

Carve Designs Lanikai Short - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 April 20, 2012

So, I know. They already look pretty comfy. Here's the bonus--the linen is softer than it looks and the elastic in the waistband is a more supple stretch to it so it doesn't pinch or squeeze at all.

These are my go to shorts for the summer this year. I have both colors!!!

Outdoor Research Aspire Jacket - Women's

Outdoor Research Aspire Jacket - Women's

Rating for this product: 4 April 20, 2012

This really is a phenomenal jacket. Every time I wear it, I get more impressed by the function of both the jackets as a whole but also the usability of the side zip. Having had an OR jacket years ago, my one worry was the fit--they have been pretty boxy in the past--but I think the fit is what impressed me the most! 5'4" and 115lbs, the size small will fit a puffy sweater layer just fine AND fits women's curves very well. Also, I don't know how they do it, but when I have my arms down, the length doesn't feel too long, but when I raise my arms, they length doesn't shorten and expose my wrists...

I am also frustrated with how stiff the size zips can be, but that's what happens with welded zippers--beats water leaking in or them unzipping on their own. But with that said, this jacket loses half a star for not having a fastener at the bottom of the side zips to hold them closed if you use it as a vent from the bottom up. I think that'd be a useful addition.

I use this glove more than any that I own

Outdoor Research StormTracker Gloves - Women's

Outdoor Research StormTracker Gloves - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 April 20, 2012

This softshell glove is perfect for just about everything I need gloves for. It is my driving glove (the leather palm grips well), my skinning glove for backcountry skiing, the glove I wear going downhill except for temps lower than 15 degrees, my building snow forts and sledding glove, my snowshoeing glove, and my glove for working outdoors in the winter (chopping wood, fall/early spring yard work, etc...).

The articulated fingers are EXCEPTIONAL, the fit is on point, and the zippered wrist fits nicely under any sleeve--it's also a locking zipper so it won't creep open while I'm working. It's also a cinch to get out of--flip the zipper pull into the "open" position and pull on the pull-on tab and the zipper opens smoothly.

Is my love for this glove coming out? Because I love this glove...

Outdoor Research Ferrosi Capri Pant - Women's

Outdoor Research Ferrosi Capri Pant - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 April 20, 2012

You can do it all in this capri. I am a high school coach and this capri is my go-to choice for days where I'll be running around with them, but also have to look professional. It is also my go-to bottom for hiking and climbing--the stretch and breathability are key--and the material is wrinkle resistant, making it perfect for days where I'm bouncing around planes and trains.

I'm 5'4", 115lbs, and the size 4 is perfect fit.

Great wind and lighht rain layer

Outdoor Research Ferrosi Hooded Softshell Jacket - Women's

Outdoor Research Ferrosi Hooded Softshell Jacket - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 April 20, 2012

This hoody is a great Spring/Fall layer--perfect for wind and light precipitation while breathable enough to shed excess heat when you do start warming up. I find that I rarely take it off after heating up because the lightweight softshell material breaths SO WELL!!!

The other thing that shocked me--OR is not known for their fit, but they're starting to change it up because this jacket is cut to flatter a woman's curves. Well done OR. Well done.

Weightless protection!

Outdoor Research Helium II Jacket - Women's

Outdoor Research Helium II Jacket - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 April 20, 2012

Ladies, this jacket is WEIGHTLESS! Ok, it's 6oz. But 100% waterproof, very windresistant, and cute colors! It also breaths really well--probably because the material is so thin). This is the perfect ultralight jacket to put in your pack and forget about until the showers come.

Just a note--when it comes to gear, I do like to go as light as possible as I am a smaller lady (5'4", 115lbs and the Small fits well) and this is definitely a keeper. Especially for the price, you're getting a high-performance shell that is more durable than you'd think...

Outdoor Research Aspire Jacket - Women's

April 19, 2012

I agree with Jeff!!! I used the Aspire all winter when I needed H2O protection over my puffy and it worked so well. The side-zip that goes all way from the hem to the pit works really well if you're wearing a backpack for venting too.

Western Mountaineering Antelope GWS Sleeping Bag: 5 Degree Down

April 18, 2012

All Western bags are compatible with all Western bags no matter the length or model.

A note on zipping two different lengths together: It's hard to describe but the shorter bag would end up lower than the bigger bag when zipped together. So zipping a 5'6" bag to a 6" bag, the shorter bag's hood will be 6" lower than the taller bag's hood...

Osprey Packs Ariel 65 Backpack - Women's - 3600-4200cu in

April 17, 2012

There are three size tabs on the pack--one for the pack, one for the hipbelt and one for harness (because the harness and the hipbelt are interchangeable). The size of the pack will be on a little black tab on the bottom left part of the frame on the backpanel. The size of the hipbelt will be on the left side of the hipbelt and the size of the harness will be on the left shoulder strap.

Also, note that the hipbelt is re-heat moldable. Take it into an Osprey Dealer that has a heat-molding oven (they might charge a small fee for not buying the pack there) and they can heat-mold the hipbelt to the new owners hips...

Enjoy the pack!!!
