Metolius Safe Tech Comp Harness

Metolius Safe Tech Comp Harness

Rating for this product: 4 June 19, 2012

I needed to replace my petzl sama harness for two reasons, the tie in point on the leg loops was wearing through and it sagged too much with a full double set of cams and all the other gear I drag up trad routes. I chose the metolius comp for a few reasons; #1 it's made in the USA, #2 it's supposed to be super durable and, lastly I hate adjustable gear loops.

I wear a size 34 pant and ordered the large (I think the medium may have worked???).

Cons: The new quick lock buckle on this harness is convenient but a bit hard to get as tight as I would like.
The gear loops are really floppy, I really dont like how soft they are when I'm racking.
The harness is rather floppy compared to my last couple of harnesses which makes putting it on a bit more of a hassle.

Pros: I didn't notice the harness while belaying on multipitch routes (not hanging belays though), or while sports climbing.

The gear loops are more to the side than my last harness which means I don't have to push my gear off my front thigh while chimneying.

The leg loops are tight enough, I just hope the elastic doesn't wear out too fast.

Made in the USA!

Good colors.

So if I was to do it over I would have liked to do a side by side with a Misty Turbo (similar style, cost and made in the US), but I'm not too worried about it. Im going to figure out a way to stiffen the gear loops and I'll have to take my time putting the Harness on so that a leg loop isn't flipped and the waist buckle is as tight as possible.

Hope this helps!

Lightweight, stretchy and well designed

NAU People's Chino Pant - Men's

NAU People's Chino Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 May 16, 2012

I'm 6'4" tall and 195 lbs, I normally wear a 34x34. I ordered the Nau Peoples Chinos in a 34x34, Tobacco. I really like the fit on these, just long enough to reach my shoes and make one break between my shoes and my knees (not too long or too short, prewashed). The material is lightweight, somewhere between normal chinos and and a heavy weight linen. The creases from shipping were easy to iron out. The fit is between slim and straight, and the stretch in them makes them very comfortable. The color is kind of dark brown with a touch of olive green, not my favorite but it looks good. I really like the lack of flaps or buttons on the back while still looking professional (not jeans style pockets). Overall I really like the pants, nice modern look, nothing frivolous and everything you need in a pant I just wish they came in a chocolate brown, cost less, and had a gusseted crotch so the seam wasn't so obvious while riding a bike. Overall they are well worth what I paid for them, if the last.

Scarpa Epic Shoe - Men's

March 11, 2012

So I bought the raptor, it turns out that despite having the same sole as the epic it is not as stiff as the epic. This is due to a stiffer midsole in the epic than the raptor. The Epic and raptor also do not have the same rubber in the outsole, the epic rubber is stiffer. I like the Raptor, but I would prefer the Epic and will probably buy a pair well before the Raptor's wear out.

Scarpa Raptor Trail Running Shoe - Men's

Scarpa Raptor Trail Running Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 March 11, 2012

I was happy to find a trail runner that came in a 48 (I wear a 13 or 14 depending on the brand/shoe) these fit really well for me. The sole is not as stiff as other trail runners, and not barefoot soft, so if you need a stiff shoe look at some of the others (I think the Epic has a stiffer plate despite having the same outsole).

Pros: Very airy (great summer shoe)
Fit Narrower feet
Good looking (IMO)
Good trail running traction

Cons: Not stiff enough to hike long distance with a heavy pack
Lots of mesh lets water or dust inside easily

Black Diamond HotWire Carabiner

Black Diamond HotWire Carabiner

Rating for this product: 1 March 2, 2012

I love the shape of the old and new hotwires, too bad the new ones are made with a softer aluminum. I climbed regularly with the original hotwires for five years after replacing them with the new ones which are now half as worn in one year. My rope gets black much faster than ever before . Now I'm looking for wire gate DMM's, they have a much better reputation for not compromising on quality.

Mountain Hardwear Melbu Stripe Sweater - Men's

Mountain Hardwear Melbu Stripe Sweater - Men's

Rating for this product: 2 November 21, 2011

I thought that this would be a similar to the patagonia or icebreaker wool pieces that I own, but besides a great fit it is super itchy. Too bad MH doesn't have the same warranty that Patagonia does, guess I'll have to wear my one long-sleeve t-shirt anytime I want to wear this sweater.

Primus Commuter Mug

Expensive Crappy Lid Design

Primus Commuter Mug

Primus Commuter Mug

Rating for this product: 1 April 4, 2011

I was excited to buy this because I need a mug that won't spill in my backpack on my way to school, by bike, in the mornings. The mug worked as intended, didn't spill (most of the time). The big problem is the design of the lid, it has hidden little pockets where liquids can get into and since I have to put 1/2&1/2 in my coffee (jacked up stomach can't handle acid of plain coffee) the liquid gets into those pockets and FUNKY stuff grows in it. I rinsed the lid and mug after I used it every time but no matter what that nasty stuff would grow a layer of disgusting inside. The worst part is it's really hidden so you can't tell until all of a sudden a CHUNK of it comes out, fortunately it came out when I rinsed it, not when I was drinking, but it's really gross. I showed my wife and she started dry heaving.

What worked best in the past was a mug from Starbucks with a flip lock lid, they still sell them but the lids are much less durable than they used to be and the mugs hold barely any liquid.

Fit Well No Padding (A good Thing),

Royal Racing Air Mountain Bike Glove - Men's

Royal Racing Air Mountain Bike Glove - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 March 6, 2011

These would be the perfect glove if it didn't have the Screenprinting on the back, it causes about half of the back of my hand to get really sweaty. Otherwise I really like the tight fit (I have long skinny hands and the XXL fits really well). On hotter days I like to wear two pair of gloves since most of my trails require climbing then descending, so I wear a pair of gloves that have amazing breathability, but aren't very comfortable for long downhills, then I Switch to these because they provide so much control and don't have any hot spots since the palm is just one continuous layer. Any glove that has padding or more than one layer rubs my palm and causes irritation on the downhills.

Marmot Approach Softshell Jacket - Men's

December 20, 2010

I think that the Approach Jacket would match what you are looking for, it has a fleecy backing to the material and the pocket section is basically the entire front section of the coat, which is hard to describe, but adds another, thin, layer of fleecy type material to the front side, but if you open the pockets it allows the jacket to breath. I have an older version of this jacket and I've beaten it up from climbing for the past 5 years, so I bought this as an around town jacket, that I will likely wear while climbing. The one thing I really liked about the older model was the cuff didn't have a tightening system, where as this one has a velcro cuff, which in my experience wears out and begins to come undone, but it is cheap and looks good enough to wear with business casual clothing.

Not for tall people, Large is 35" waist

Cutter Tech Knickerbocker - Men's

Cutter Tech Knickerbocker - Men's

Rating for this product: 2 November 21, 2010

The material on these is great (not black), stretchy, breathes well and water resistant.

I normally wear a 34 waste so I ordered the Large, which is a bit bitg for me, but from the reviews I've read the mediums were too tight for 33"waist. I have to wear a belt with em to keep em from sliding off my butt.

I am 6'4" and normally wear a 34" inseam pant, when I first put these on, and I'm standing, they feel great, but when I get on the bike the hem of the knickers end up above my knee and stay there because they are somewhat tight. If you wear a 35" waist and a 32" inseam I have a pair of knickers for you (or you should order a large if you see these on bonktown).

Best 100 oz Hydration Pack

Hydrapak Big Sur Hydration Pack - 450cu in

Hydrapak Big Sur Hydration Pack - 450cu in

Rating for this product: 5 March 6, 2010

I've been mountain biking since the early 90's and remember when the first Camelbacks hit the scene, such a cool and obvious idea. Now Camelback and Hydration Pack are synonymous. I have owned many variations of Hydration packs including Camelbacks. Hydrapack has made the closest one to perfect so far. Even the mouth piece works really well (although it isn't better than Camelbacks design).

The coolest aspect of the Big Sur is the bladder, which can be removed from the pack without having to remove the hose, and you can do this without making a mess, the hose has a quick disconnect with a built in spring valve that stops that port from leaking without the hose! The other RAD feature is the bladder also has a fold over-sliding top that is leakproof but allows you to turn the bladder inside out for complete drying, unlike a camelback where a 1/4 of water always remains in the pack unless you put a dry wash cloth in it.

The pack itself is very similar to the old Mule or one of the newer Lobos from Camelback. The construction appears to be bomber. The inside of all the pockets is red so finding tools and other small objects should be easy (I like the bright green of the old camelbacks, or just white). The waist strap is easily adjustable and also easily removable. The pack sits very comfortably, not that I've every used on that bothered me. There are just the right amount of pockets, enough that you can take all your essentials and keep them in their own convenient place. You can easily strap your helmet between the main pocket and the 'outside' pocket for those long grueling uphills. The 'ouside' pocket has two internal pockets, one mesh perfect for keeping your chapstick or other small item inside and the other is a soft material for your sunglasses. There is also a velcro quick access pocket, the perfect size for a couple cliff bars or a multi-tool if you know you are going to be adjusting something throughout your ride. On the main part of the pack is the hydration-sleeve which is accessed through a back panel that makes it very convenient for easy removal of the bladder (there is a little loop that you clip the top of the bladder to so it won't fall down into the pack, just one more smart little feature that makes everything easier). The big main pocket is the perfect size for a cycling jacket, hat and even a lightweight fleece (that is as much as you could probably fit). at the top back of the main pocket is a small pocket perfect for an IPOD and your wallet (there is a small rubber port for earphones if you want to be one of 'those guys'). There is a second pocket outside of that with a velcor closure perfect for a mini-pump and a few other tools and of course your extra tube.

I really hope this company does well, they have made a great product with smart innovations all while providing the perfect size pack for 3 hour trail rides.

ExOfficio Give-N-Go Boxer Brief - Men's

ExOfficio Give-N-Go Boxer Brief - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 May 22, 2008

I own 5 different brands of synthetic boxer briefs, some are much cheaper but none match the comfort ore breathability of these. They are stupid expensive, but I think they will last a long time. If you are at all on the fence about them I suggest you get them.

Other brands (with rating compared to these )
C9 by champion mesh from target (3/5)(no longer made)
C9 by champion polyester from target (2/5) (current synthetics at target)
Patagonia lightweight (3/5) (they have a seam that goes up the butt crack)
Sanoma from Kohls (2/5) (the hem around the thigh is TIGHT)
Jockey polyester from department store (1/5) (no support, too stretchy)
Merona from target (1/5) (almost identical to the jockeys).

Better than the others

Sea To Summit Tek Towel

Sea To Summit Tek Towel

Rating for this product: 4 May 22, 2008

I should give this towel 5 stars because it is so much nicer than the MSR or the REI models, but it still needs that something extra. The towel does have a great terry cloth feel unlike the MSR's but the way it sort of grabs at your skin instead of sliding smoothly like a cotton towel keeps it from being perfect. For a light weight highly absorbent towel with a good feel I suggest this, much easier to pack than a cotton towel, and much faster drying.

Vasque Pingora Approach Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 February 28, 2005

These shoes edge very well, are very comfortable, and can be tightened all the way to the toes for climbing shoe type fit. The rubber on these is super sticky, but appears to wear very well (I have had mine for 4 Months and they still look great).
