The first HUGE advantage is that they pack so tightly together that they are almost like the thickness of one normal snowshoe, plus the fact that the last 6in can be removed makes them that much smaller and versatile. Another notable advantage: the sharp toe fin cuts upward through any crusty snow to keep your feet moving even if you sink in. And finally, I was stunned by how I could calmly walk straight down a slope of 45+ degrees and not slip an inch, even when leaning back.
